GOCE coordinator election

Hi. Since you have plenty of experience with the GOCE, I was wondering if you'd be interested in standing for coordinator in the upcoming election. It's not a difficult job, and several hands make light work. If you're interested, nominations run from June 1–15 and self-noms are welcome. All the best, Miniapolis 14:55, 28 May 2016 (UTC)

Thanks, Miniapolis, for the prodding! I've been gnoming away on Wikipedia for years, perhaps it's time I took a leadership role, however so slight. Tdslk (talk) 15:46, 30 May 2016 (UTC)
Nothing wrong with gnoming. As I said, it's not a difficult job but it can be a PITA for one or two people working alone. Whatever you have time for (and feel like doing) would be great; feel free to ask any questions. Thanks and all the best, Miniapolis 22:50, 30 May 2016 (UTC)

Help with David Harding (financier)

Hi Tdslk, Sorry to bug, I am hoping you might be willing to help with a request to update and make some corrections in David Harding (financier)'s Wikipedia article as I'm having a lot of trouble finding someone to assist. A couple years ago, you helped User:WWB Too (my colleague) with some updates for the page so I was wondering if you'd be willing to help out again? Most of the updates are fairly run-of-the-mill such as adding a new role with Britain Stronger in Europe and correcting now outdated details about his titles at Winton, but there is one part to the request that is a little more sensitive. Some family details are currently incorrect and this is causing Mr. Harding and his family some upset. Specifically, the current mention of his older children is not correct as the article says they are from his first wife, which is not the case.

In full disclosure, I'm working on behalf of Mr. Harding, so I won't make any edits myself and I'm looking for uninvolved editors who can review the request for me and make the edits that are most appropriate. Can you help? 16912 Rhiannon (Talk · COI) 19:14, 13 June 2016 (UTC)

Thanks so much for you help on this! I replied on the Talk page, but also pinging here to see if you would mind also adding the new photo and making a quick formatting fix? Thanks in advance, 16912 Rhiannon (Talk · COI) 14:25, 15 June 2016 (UTC)
Hi again! Hope you're having a great week. I was wondering if you might have a minute to look at the new photo for Harding and making the quick formatting fix noted above. Sorry again to be bothering you, I've had trouble finding help elsewhere on this. 16912 Rhiannon (Talk · COI) 21:49, 7 July 2016 (UTC)
Just wanted to let you know that the image got added. There are still a couple of formatting tweaks if you ever find a spare minute and are able to take a look, but nothing major. Thanks again for your help with this earlier, I appreciate it. 16912 Rhiannon (Talk · COI) 20:03, 8 July 2016 (UTC)

Copy-edit articles which are superseded or have other problems?

Hi! I've just joined, after looking through the list of articles tagged for ce. Many of the articles I've found look as though copy-editing would be wasted effort - for example:

  • Talk:Lilith in popular culture: nominated for deletion
  • Talk:Glue code: content moved to Adapter pattern - it looks as though this page only exists for the sake of its history, and ideally wouldn't be edited at all (though people still seem to be madly editing it and getting into arguments about it)

What should I do with articles like that that don't look as though they'll last? Avoid working on them, and find articles without that kind of extra problem - or edit them anyway? I also thought of this when I found articles with insufficient citations or unverified content. My thought was that someone fixing the more fundamental problem would probably rewrite them anyway, so that an improvement to the existing content wouldn't do much good. But perhaps I'm wrong. Thanks! Ssptwriter (talk) 14:25, 28 September 2016 (UTC)

Hi @Ssptwriter:. Good question! First, thanks for joining the Wikipedia-editing community. Welcome! With 1800+ articles tagged as needing copy editing (and many, many more that need a good copy edit but aren't tagged), it's good to prioritize your work. I agree that it doesn't make much sense to work on stuff that may get merged or deleted. For other tags I tend to play it by ear. For instance, with an article that is gratuitously promotional or POV pushing, I'd rather not polish writing that's inherently reducing the quality of the article, but sometimes I'll remove the promotional text and fix the rest (e.g., [1]). I do usually copy edit articles that are tagged as needing citations, since these can be added without affecting the prose. Feel free to ask if you have any more questions! Tdslk (talk) 02:57, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
Hi @Tdslk:. Thanks for your very helpful answer! I've modified the section heading to summarise my question more precisely, in case that might be useful for other editors - hope that's OK. Ssptwriter (talk) 11:46, 29 September 2016 (UTC)

Redneck Revolt

Hi, I see that you added a neutrality/POV flag to the article Redneck Revolt. Could you tell me what about it is, or seems, non-neutral? It seems to me to be neutral (i.e., it doesn't say they're great, or even good; it doesn't include any value judgments, just a factual description of their political positions. Thanks! Bookgrrl holler/lookee here 21:20, 26 March 2017 (UTC)

Hi @Bookgrrl:. The article originally had a copy edit tag for "slight POV bias." POV isn't a copy editing issue, so I changed the tag to a POV tag; I don't actually have an opinion on whether it is NPOV. It looks like the original tag was added by @TheDragonFire:, maybe they can explain what they found objectionable. Tdslk (talk) 21:38, 26 March 2017 (UTC)
@Tdslk and Bookgrrl: Ah, sorry about that. You are correct that I choose the entirely wrong tag as it's not a copy-editing issue. I think I was trying to avoid a full-blown POV tag as the issue isn't that bad. Reviewing new pages always tends to make me slightly paranoid given the amount of disguised COI content I encounter, so this is possibly unreasonable, but I felt the article failed to discuss why the movement is notable, and mainly focused on the principles behind it (which is generally a hallmark of COI editing, but possibly not in this case). Terms like "homage" and "has its roots in", are the sort of thing that a supporter of the movement would use. I've replaced the tag with {{refimprove}}, as additional references and discussion of news coverage will likely address this concern. TheDragonFire (talk) 04:46, 27 March 2017 (UTC)
Thanks :) Also thanks for introducing me to the "ping" tag, I didn't know it was a thing! Bookgrrl holler/lookee here 15:18, 4 July 2017 (UTC)

Punyaboy still doing inappropriate copy edit tagging

Tdslk, I noticed that Punyaboy added an inappropriate copy edit template to Bus rapid transit in India yesterday, when it had two sentences and a table and clearly wasn't a candidate, so I removed the template and posted to his talk page about it. My post has already been "archived" (actually deleted, despite the misleading edit summary).

You might want to take a look to see whether his templating is still problematic. If it continues to be so, perhaps stronger measures might be appropriate. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 09:57, 8 September 2017 (UTC)

Yeah, BlueMoonset, my comments got "archived" as well. I feel like I've made a thorough good-faith effort to discuss the topic as well. Not sure what to do next about resolving the situation. Tdslk (talk) 23:06, 9 September 2017 (UTC)
Maybe the other coordinators would have thoughts on the matter?
The total numbers are going wildly in the wrong direction in the current drive, and there are some others adding large numbers of copy edit templates. Two editors that I've noticed:
  • 168.233.220.6 added 17 in a row on September 9, and had done over a dozen others between early and late August
  • Nerd1a4i added 17 on September 10, starting shortly after requesting the New Page Reviewer right (and switching to the Page Curation tool when the right was granted)
Mind you, these may be properly tagged. I'm not sure what the protocol is for templating new pages, or whether these or the others are valid. I imagine that there are a good many articles on Wikipedia that could genuinely use tagging, and you never know when someone will come along with new energy and a good eye for what needs work. However, I thought if either of there were someone starting out who needed guidance, it made sense to let you know. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 16:36, 11 September 2017 (UTC)
Punyaboy has marked their talk page as being on a wikibreak for the next nine months, FWIW.
Many articles are tagged for copy-editing each month, typically somewhere in the 400+ range. It is useful to have at least one editor keeping an eye on the new month of articles during each drive to look for patterns and problems, to re-tag pages that should be tagged for cleanup or something else instead of copy-editing, and also to knock out some quick and easy copy edits. From the above discussion, it sounds like that is happening here, so good work, everyone. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:55, 11 September 2017 (UTC)
Yeah. Punyaboy did make good contributions to the transit articles, which is why I wanted to work with them on the tags issue. I hope they come back and that we can work things out. I do keep a passing eye on the newest articles and, as you say, make quick edits and remove tags when they are not much is needed. (I don't count these towards my drive totals, of course.) As I've said before, tagging articles that really need copy editing are great. Our goal as a Guild should not be to have no articles tagged for copy editing, but to have no articles that need copy editing. (Which, of course, is as elusive as having a compendium of all the world's knowledge, but we type on regardless.) Tdslk (talk) 02:28, 12 September 2017 (UTC)

Hi there, A few months ago you copyedited a BLP on Pakistani prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi. Recently, I have further expanded "Prime minister" section and I think ce becomes essential to keep its GA icon intact. There is some major work required on this sub-section. I wonder if you would be able to do a quick copyedit? --Saqib (talk) 12:32, 20 December 2017 (UTC)

Hi Saqib. I agree that it is important to keep this article in good shape. I will take a look at it tonight (in 12 hours or so). Tdslk (talk) 13:25, 20 December 2017 (UTC)
Hi, I appreciate your work. But one thing, You've added at least four CN tags on the BLP. Fine but two of them I am going to remove because the material has been cited inline via BBC story. Because the story is not in English language, I assume you failed to verify it. If so I hope I can safely remove those tags tags? But I am curious why would you tag a para twice under Policies_and_initiatives section even though the a reliable source in English language has been cited. I suggest you to read this source. Maybe I misinterpreted the Dawn story? I am happy to remove or make changes to this para if the corresponding Dawn article says otherwise. --Saqib (talk) 08:10, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
Hi Saqib. I admit I was being extra-cautious, since this is a BLP of a prominent politician. I think it would be helpful to cite the specific BBC Urdu story in question. For the statement with the Dawn citation at the end of the paragraph, since the statement I flagged may be controversial, I think it should be better sourced. It implies that (certain persons think that) Abassi is not making the changes to resolve his country's problems. That's going to be a strong statement of opinion to make about any politician, so it should be well-cited if it should remain at all, I think. Tdslk (talk) 02:24, 22 December 2017 (UTC)
Sorry but I did not get your point. Do you want me to specify the paragraphs from BBC Urdu story here for verification or what? Regarding the statements tagged in second last section, is this what you suggesting? --Saqib (talk) 12:49, 22 December 2017 (UTC)
I see you revised the phrasing so it is clear which BBC Urdu article is being referred to, so I removed that cn tag. I still think that the statement "he is said to have used the names of some generals to some extent for benefits" should have a cite, since it is implying corrupt activities. Tdslk (talk) 21:08, 22 December 2017 (UTC)
Please see this edit. --Saqib (talk) 05:55, 23 December 2017 (UTC)
Looks good! Tdslk (talk) 16:10, 23 December 2017 (UTC)
