Copy editing and correction[edit]

  • I see that most of your editing is minor copy editing and correction of grammar and punctuation. That is a useful and important task, and you have done some good work in that area. However, you have also made some mistakes, and care is needed. I will give just a few examples, in the hope that they may help you to know what kinds of things to look out for and try to avoid in the future. In one article you replaced "From 1975 to 1977 he was Consul General in New York" with "From 1975 to 1977,1977 he was Consul General in New York". It seems that your intention was to add a comma after the date, not to duplicate the date, but you should always proof read your edits before moving on, preferably by using the preview button before saving the edit. Likewise your replaced "Most of the Ekiti population is located in Nigeria" with "The Ekiti people arelocated in Nigeria". While preferring "the people are" to "the population is" is just a matter of personal preference, "arelocated" was clearly a mistake, which again could have been avoided by careful proof reading, and I also wonder whether you intended to change from saying that most of them are in Nigeria to saying that all of them are, or whether that too was a mistake. In another article you changed a statement that someone had studied at something called ‘’September the 1st’’ Pedagogical University of Moscow to the statement that she had studied at ‘’September 1st at ’’Pedagogical University of Moscow. I am not sure that there is a university called "September the 1st" Pedagogical University, but it seems far more unlikely that there is one called "September 1st at" Pedagogical University, and my searches suggest that there isn't. Also, in that edit you messed up formatting by moving the space from outside the quotes to inside, as well as failing to correct the erroneous use of single quotes. Just one more example: in one article you replaced a perfectly correct use of a colon to introduce a list with a semicolon, which is not an accepted use of a semicolon.
  • As I said above, I am providing these examples not to castigate or criticise you, but in the hope that they will help you to avoid similar mistakes in future. Most of the mistakes could be avoided by careful proof reading, and for issues such as the title of a university it would be better never to make a change without first checking sources to make sure you know exactly what the correct title is. For things such as use of colons perhaps it's better to avoid making changes at all, unless you are 100% sure you know what accepted usage is in the particular case you are dealing with. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 10:43, 23 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot talk for all the corrections, thanks for taking out time to carefully explain my mistakes Would try to be careful next time but I would love to know why the article on Lekan Otufodunrin was deleted. Can you kindly explain? Thanks again for the explanations JamesBWatson" (talk) Teemah 24 (talk) 23:23, 23 August 2018 (UTC)Teemah 24 (talk) 01:13, 28 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Teemah 24. I wanted to let you know that I’m proposing an article that you started, Lekan Otufodunrin, for deletion because it's a biography of a living person that lacks references. If you don't want Lekan Otufodunrin to be deleted, please add a reference to the article. For the articleto remain on Wikipedia, you will also need to demonstrate that this person meets our Notability criteria.

If you don't understand this message, you can leave a note on my talk page.

Thanks,

Nick Moyes (talk) 00:20, 28 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Nick Moyes (talk)I am still working on the article and a reference would be added soon

Nick Moyes (talk) Teemah 24 (talk) added the reference, kindly go through it and remove the proposed deletion. thanksTeemah 24 (talk) 01:06, 28 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Now that you have added at leadt one reference you are free to remove that WP:PRODtemplate yourself. However, I still see nothing whatsoever in this article to show why this person is notable. It just reads like a cv of a journalist to me. I'm afraid that if you cannot demonstrate why he meets our notability criteria, this article will be put up for deletion. See WP:NBIO. I believe you've already had a draft on the same subject rejected for the same reasons. Regards from the UK, Nick Moyes (talk) 08:50, 28 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

No, the reason it was initially deleted was because it was promotional and advertising. I agreed to the deletion because I did not initially write it in my own words. Am still new to creating articles, just trying to develop myself. And secondly, notability does not necessarily mean the person should be popular and this is way more than the cv of a particular person, his previous life and works he has written are all stated there. If there are other things you feel I should know.. Please, don't hesitate to tell me And I don't know how to remove the proposed deletion template form the page. Would love if you could hint me on how to. Thanks. Nick Moyes (talk) Teemah 24 (talk)Teemah 24 (talk) 12:36, 28 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again. It looks like you have worked out how to remove the template. (I believe letting people find out for themselves is better than doing it for them - so well done for that) I should say that creating a new article is one of the hardest tasks here on Wikipedia. Many long-term editors have started off gently, making small improvements and learning as they go along. It can be demoralising and offputting to work hard on something, only to find other editors point out it fails to meet our guidelines or policies in one way or another. Not being an admin, I couldn't see the original draft that was deleted. Normally, drafts are left for editors to improve, unless they've contains lots of copyrighted material. So, by being in the main part of the encyclopaedia, your new article is inevitably going to be subject to scrutiny. In future, do consider either wworking on a draft, or even preparing it in your own sandbox (link to that at top of every page when you're logged in) I have a number of drafts in multiple sandbox pages that aren't ready to become part of the main encyclopaedia, and some have been there for a year or two!
I still don't see how you've demonstrated notability of this young journalist. You have missed this citation which adds a little, but you have to ask yourself, what is it that makes person x stand out above the millions of others in the world. Major Awards? Biographical Coverage on newspapers or books? i.e. have they been written about in depth by reliable independent sources? Maybe you should read Wikipedia:Your first article and perhaps even try the interactive Wikipedia Adventure  Having also notice that your article on Henrietta Kosoko has likewise had a WP:PROD notice put upon it. I can see (by checking online) that you've not really bothered to do the essential collation work of reference-gathering. That actress has had numerous obituaries published, and you could have extracted some useful information about her. The point of a 'PROD' notice is that anyone can remove it at any time, though if they don't it will get deleted after 7 days. I urge you to research and find citations which prove her notabilty (which I think she meets), whereas for this young journalist, I don't hold out too much hope.
If you have any other problems with editing, do please feel free to come to the Teahouse and ask for assistance from our volunteer hosts there. Regards, Nick Moyes (talk)

Thanks a lot for the help, would work on the Henrietta Kosoko article, and would start working in my sandbox as well. Thank you Nick Moyes (talk) Teemah_24 (talk)

Notice

The article Bisola Aiyeola has been proposed for deletion because it appears to have no references. Under Wikipedia policy, this biography of a living person will be deleted after seven days unless it has at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't be offended. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Referencing for beginners, or ask at the help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp/dated}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within seven days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. reddogsix (talk) 02:03, 28 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Re-creation of articles and close paraphrasing of text[edit]

  • I see that recently the article Lekan Otufodunrin, which you had created, was deleted, and three minutes later you re-created it, re-using most of the text of the previous version word for word the same. Considering that the article had been considered unsuitable by both the editor who nominated it for deletion and the administrator who deleted it, rather than just unilaterally recreating it perhaps you should have consulted them about their reasons.
  • If you take existing text, and copy it, changing the wording slightly and reordering its paragraphs, but leaving it in a state such that anyone comparing the two can easily see that the one is a slightly modified version of the other, then that is very unlikely to be enough to satisfy copyright law, and it is certainly not enough to satisfy Wikipedia's copyright policy. For that reason I am going to delete it again. I don't have any opinion to express on the other reason given for deletion, namely that the article was promotional, but you may like to consult the two editors who were responsible for the deletion, as I have suggested above. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 14:39, 28 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I don't seem to understand all these, it's not like I have finished making changes. I sincerely do not know much about the creation of articles and I am just getting used to it with all the corrections everyone has been given. That being said, I was editing and was about to save and it immediately showed deleted, do you want to recreate and I clicked on recreate. I apologize for not contacting the editors first. Lastly, please can you provide a link to the copyright laws on Wikipedia. And if there's a better way to explain it to me like you did with the copy editing.. Would appreciate it. Thanks JamesBWatson" (talk) Teemah_24" (talk)Teemah 24 (talk) 10:05, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

My apologies. After I have been editing Wikipedia for many years, many things are so obvious to me that sometimes I don't realise that they may not be obvious to new editors. Here are a few comments which I hope may help to make things clearer for you.
If a page has been deleted then it means that an administrator has decided it is not suitable, and most often at least one other person has also thought the same, and has nominated the page for deletion. That being so, rather than just going ahead and creating the page again you should check the reason for deletion, to make sure you are not just doing the same thing again, which will again be considered unsuitable. The notice telling you that the page has been deleted gives the name of the administrator who deleted it, a few links, the most important of which is a link to her or his talk page, which you can use to contact her or him if necessary to ask about the deletion. It also gives the reason that the administrator gave for the deletion, which can sometimes be very useful, but unfortunately sometimes it is rather brief and cryptic, making it not very helpful. Also, just above that information about the administrator who deleted the page is a note saying "If you are recreating a page similar to the previously deleted page, or are unsure, please first contact the user(s) who performed the action(s) listed below", and you should certainly take notice of that message if you are considering re-creating the page.
Wikipedia's policy on copyright is Wikipedia:Copyrights. Unfortunately it is rather long and complicated, and much of it doesn't apply to your editing, and you may find it more helpful to look at one or both of the pages Wikipedia:FAQ/Copyright and Wikipedia:Copying text from other sources rather than reading the whole of the policy. Those two pages are not official policies, but they do give fairly good summaries of some of the most important points.
I hope that some or all of what I have said may be helpful to you. Please do feel welcome to ask again if you have any more questions. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 20:59, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for creating Bisola Aiyeola's article, I really wanted to create it next month as it was a top priority for me, however I am glad there is another Wikipedian who say the need to create an article for a talented thespian such as Bisola. I also want to say that you did a decent job in the structure and content of the article, kudos sir! If you don't mind, can you please create an article for the recently held 2018 AMVCA? Requests for uncreated articles[edit]

Greetings & a great weekend to you all. I believe it would be great if the (Requests for uncreated articles) section in our wiki project can be attended to & at least one article be created this weekend as some requests have been pending since 2016. I believe this would be pivotal to the encyclopedia as a whole & a means to get editors who have gone inactive to revive their Wikipedia activities. Sent by Celestina007. Speedy deletion nomination of Carzout[edit]

Hello Teemah 24,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Carzout for deletion, because the article doesn't clearly indicate why the subject is important enough to be included in an encyclopedia.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Thanks!

Speedy deletion nomination of Dominique Zinkpè[edit]

Hello, Teemah 24,

Welcome to Wikipedia! I edit here too, under the username TheWikiholic, and I thank you for your contributions.

I wanted to let you know, however, that I have tagged an article that you started, Dominique Zinkpè, for deletion, because it is a very short article that doesn't provide readers with enough context to determine who or what the subject is.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top. If the page is already deleted by the time you come across this message and you wish to retrieve the deleted material, please contact the deleting administrator.

For any further query, please leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|TheWikiholic}}. And, don't forget to sign your reply with ~~~~ . Thanks!
