Articles for creation is desperately short of reviewers! We are looking for urgent help, from experienced editors, in reviewing submissions in the pending submissions queue. Currently there are 2555 submissions waiting to be reviewed and many help requests at our help desk.

Do you have what it takes?
  1. Are you familiar with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines?
  2. Do you know what Wikipedia is and is not?
  3. Do you have a working knowledge of the Manual of Style, particularly article naming conventions?
  4. Can you review submissions based on their individual merits?

If the answer to these questions is yes, then please read the reviewing instructions and donate a little of your time to helping tackle the backlog. You might wish to add {{AFC status}} or {{AfC Defcon}} to your userpage, which will alert you to the number of open submissions. Plus, reviewing is easy when you use our new semi-automated reviewing script!

GOCE November drive wrap-up

Guild of Copy Editors November 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up

Participation: Thanks to all who participated! Out of 38 people who signed up this drive, 33 copy-edited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. All the barnstars have now been distributed.

Progress report: We achieved our primary goal of clearing November and December 2011 from the backlog. For the first time since the drives began, the backlog consists only of articles tagged in the current year. The total backlog at the end of the month was 2690 articles, down from 8323 when we started out over two years ago. We completed all 56 requests outstanding before November 2012 as well as eight of those made in November.

Copy Edit of the Month: Voting is now over for the October 2012 competition, and prizes have been issued. The November 2012 contest is closed for submissions and open for voting. The December 2012 contest is now open for submissions. Everyone is welcome to submit entries and to vote.

Coodinator election: The six-month term for our fourth tranche of Guild coordinators will expire at the end of December. Nominations are open for the fifth tranche of coordinators, who will serve from 1 January to 30 June 2013. For complete information, please have a look at the election page.

– Your drive coordinators: Stfg, Allens, and Torchiest.

End of Year Events from the Guild of Copy Editors

The Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in its events:

  • The December 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest is currently in the submissions stage. Submit your best December copy edit there before the end of the month. Submissions end, and discussion and voting begin, on January 1 at 00:00 (UTC).
  • Voting is in progress for the November 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest. Everyone is welcome to vote, whether they have entered the contest or not.
  • From Sunday 16 December to Saturday 22 December, we are holding a Project Blitz, in which we will copy edit articles tagged with {{copyedit}} from January 2012. The blitz works much like our bimonthly drives, but a bit simpler. Everyone is welcome to take part, and barnstars will be awarded.
  • January 2013 Backlog elimination drive is a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on January 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on January 31 at 23:59 (UTC). Our goals are to copy edit all articles tagged in January, February, and March 2012 and complete all requests placed before the end of 2012. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits at least one article, and special awards will be given to the top five in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", "Number of articles of over 5,000 words", "Number of articles tagged in January, February, and March 2012", and "Longest article". We hope to see you there! – Your drive coordinators: Stfg, Allens, and Torchiest.

Coodinator election: Nominations are open for candidates to serve as GOCE coordinators from 1 January to 30 June 2013. Nominations close on December 15 at 23:59 UTC, after which voting will run until the end of December. For complete information, please have a look at the election page.

A tag has been placed on Wimborne Minster Folk Festival, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a redirect to a nonexistent page, or a redirect loop.

If you can fix this redirect to point to an existing Wikipedia page, please do so and remove the speedy deletion tag. However, please do not remove the speedy deletion tag unless you also fix the redirect. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. - Camyoung54 talk 15:48, 31 March 2013 (UTC)

Hello Camyoung54,
Another user, User:Thejemanator, had removed all the content from Wimborne Folk Festival and turned it into a redirect. I have resolved this problem for now and will contact the user about his/her intent. Gold Standard 16:15, 31 March 2013 (UTC)
OK, great. - Camyoung54 talk 19:29, 1 April 2013 (UTC)

AfC

Unsourced BLPs submitted to AfC should be declined as unsourced, not as BLP violations, unless what is asserted in the article is derogatory or controversial. Declining them as BLP violations lists them for speedy deletion, but we do not speedy delete BLPs unless they meet the general provisions at WP:CSD -- normally, vandalism or promotion or attack pages. Even in mainspace we do not speedy delete unsourced BLPs for just being unsourced -- we delete them by BLP PROD if nobody sources them. I therefore removed the speedy deletion tag placed at Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Michael Carney and for Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Mihai Grunfeld

This is not your fault, actually: the instructions and wordings of the tags are unclear, confusing, and even to some degree contradictory, but the deletion of AfCs are governed by our actual policy, WP:Deletion policy

Now, as a matter of fact, Grunfield might or might not be notable under WP:Author or WP:Academic, but it would depend on the details of the importance of his work. Probably not, because the Vassar Web site shows he is only an Associate Professor, and his autobiographical novel is essentially self-published. I will review it accordingly. Got it! Will take this into account in the future. Happy Easter! Gold Standard 23:09, 31 March 2013 (UTC)

Dear Gold Standard,
I was wondering if you could have another look at The Armorial Register Limited. I thought that I had covered its notability in the first paragraph. It is, what was, the publishing arm of Burkes' Peerage. Burkes could not make it pay and the creditors forced it to be sold off. The current editors were already doing the job for Burkes, so they took it over. If Burkes itself is notable, surely the inheritors of the intellectual property would also be notable.
Should that not be enough, I have added various references from English Wikipedia, Italian, Hungarian and French Wikipedia and external sources.
I would also point out this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Heraldic_Registry which has had a page since 2006, but has not got 1 single reference. The United States Heraldic Registry, nominally did the same job as The Armorial Register except that it did not publish any physical books, which The Armorial Register does. The US Heraldic Register is now defunct and has been for some time. No one seems to know whether Mr Swanson, the man who ran the site is in fact still alive.
Thank you for any assistance you can give. Kiltpin (talk) 18:36, 1 April 2013 (UTC)
Thank you for contacting me! Firstly, no organization or company is inherently notable. If the individual organization has received no or very little notice from independent sources, then it is not notable. See Wikipedia:CORP#No_inherent_notability for more. Also, with regards to the United States Heraldic Registry page, please read WP:OSE. I have marked the United States Heraldic Registry page as not demonstrating notability and it will be deleted if notability cannot be established using reliable sources. I see that you have added more references, so I will look at your AFC again. Also, although proper formatting is not a requirement for AFC acceptance, I urge you to read WP:FN for help on properly using references and creating inline citations. It makes the page look cleaner and helps verify information more specifically. Thanks, Gold Standard 20:48, 1 April 2013 (UTC)
Hello again,
Unfortunately, the references you provided do not establish notability. For one, referencing Wikipedia itself is not allowed. See WP:CIRCULAR for more. Secondly, the external references do not demonstrate significant coverage of the article. They contain little more than a passing mention of the subject of the article or do not mention the subject of the article at all. Read WP:GNG to find out more about what you need to do to demonstrate that the subject of this article is notable. Thanks, Gold Standard 06:40, 2 April 2013 (UTC)

Ann Rivers

Hey there- I saw your recent change (and undo) on Ann Rivers concerning the image used in the article. I would just ask that you clarify that your edits are justified before doing anything to the image or article. I had explained on the image's page why it was not under copyright. I am planning on adding images from the same source to as many WA State Senators and Representatives as I have time for. Thank you for keeping the state senators' pages on your mind. PrairieKid (talk) 00:45, 4 April 2013 (UTC)

Hello, please look again at the edit I made and undid, as it had nothing to do with the photo. The text content that you added was very nearly copied directly from the source, and I still encourage you to make it more in your own words, but it seems to be barely acceptable. Also, on a second note, I at one point tried to copy photos from the State Senate and State Legislature websites, as you are doing, but was met with strong resistance. I had just completed creating about 100 stubs for missing State Rep and State Senator pages, and they desperately needed photos. I was told that I needed to have a representative from the websites send an email to OTRS, because the Secretary of State declaration of public domain for the Secretary of State website did not necessarily apply to the State Senate and State Legislature pages. I contacted a representative and they said they would get back to me but never did. Thanks for your work! Gold Standard 01:04, 4 April 2013 (UTC)

Gold Standard, if you're going to propose a merger, you need to provide a forum in which to discuss it. I have created one here with a space for your rationale. RockMagnetist (talk) 18:46, 5 April 2013 (UTC)

My apologies, I seem to have forgotten this. Gold Standard 18:47, 5 April 2013 (UTC)
That's o.k. I'm sure that you mean well by your merger proposal, but it is based on a bad judgement by Safiel. The PROD will be almost certainly rejected, after which you might want to consider withdrawing your merge proposal. RockMagnetist (talk) 22:14, 5 April 2013 (UTC)
Yes, I meant to save the article contents via a merge. In all likelihood I will remove my merge proposal when and if the CSD is rejected. Gold Standard 22:58, 5 April 2013 (UTC)
