Image changes on League article[edit]

Hello GreatClockwyrm,

First, thanks for updating the image in the League article! The old one was pretty out of date.

Now, the bad news. Wikipedia has a pretty stringent "fair use" guidelines on images. (And yes, this is nonsense, these screenshots are free advertising, and even if a company complained, it's not like it's even possible to stop their spread through the Internet.) Wikipedia:WikiProject_Video_games/Article_guidelines#Screenshots_and_cover_art suggests that one gameplay shot is valid "for free", but further ones require sourced third party commentary - which we kind of don't have. As such, I think we probably need to remove the other two screenshots you added (they include stuff like usernames & stream advertising which is problematic anyway). For the Miss Fortune screenshot, you said you got it from Google Image Search - who's picture is it? While it's a solid screenshot, whoever took that screenshot has rights to it as well, and needs to cede them away. (You can get around this by taking a screenshot yourself, though.) I think I'd rather remove that as well unless you can ascertain whoever took that screenshot is okay with licensing it under a free license. (Yes, YES, I know, it's academic on the Internet, but Wikipedia does it by the book.)

Also, some of your text changes I've reverted as well for reading a little too hypey. Wikipedia is a tad on the boring and staid side, so you can't say "exponential growth" unless the growth really is exponential growth, which is unlikely (it'd imply that the entire world population was about to play League shortly). For images, a gameplay shot from Riot's webpage is probably fine, actually. Wikipedia is taking Riot's work no matter what, so it doesn't change the amount of "fair use" used. If you personally take a screenshot than waive your rights, that's also okay; the problem is taking someone else's screenshot, because now *their* rights might not have been signed over.

For a list of champions, and some of the detail you've been adding to the page... uh. I don't like to be the bearer of bad news, so let me note up front: I personally am against many of Wikipedia's more "deletionist" antics. But I don't think this is gonna fly. Wikipedia's articles are more aimed at a "general audience" and don't tend to drill down to stuff like every single plant (which is only a recent change anyway!), exactly how jungle monsters / runes / masteries work, and so on. There's even a page for this: WP:GAMEGUIDE, " avoid lists of gameplay weapons, items, or concepts." Now, don't get me wrong, people edge around this all the time, because often some amount of explanation is required to get a sense of the overall gameplay - but that only goes so far. The page's gameplay was *intentionally* summarized to not include every detail, and might arguably still be too long for "Wikipedia" standards. For an example of a Wikipedia "Featured Article" - aka something WP thinks is close to a perfect article - see Defense of the Ancients and note the star in the upper right. Note how long the gameplay section is. Nothing about Crystal Maiden, nothing about Roshan, nothing about hard carries, nothing about losing gold on death, nothing about turn speed. The amount of detail that was currently in the League article was already way, way more than DOTA's - and now it's even bigger. If it was just me, I might shrug and move on, but you're basically asking for someone to come along and delete the whole section if it gets too big.

Example? Take a look at User:Prisencolin/List_of_League_of_Legends_champions (so yes, all of your League champions list work is already done), and also at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of League of Legends champions (2nd nomination) , the discussion that deleted it. That amount of content isn't going to fly, and it won't fly as hiding in the "main" League article either. Something similar happened at the Runeterra page: this. There wasn't a formal debate on this one, but I don't think the odds are high of it surviving an Articles for Deletion effort. Going back to the champions section on the main League page, remember, general audience, people who genuinely want to learn the gameplay are expected to go to Wikia or the game itself. So we don't need a ton of examples, and I think the classes / subclasses blog post, while fascinating, is also overkill. "Assassin" rather than "Slayer" is also correct for the vast majority of references: i.e. the in-game client lets you sort by "Assassin/Fighter/Mage/Support/Tank/Marksman", http://gameinfo.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/game-info/champions/ uses that, etc. While that blog post is great, going into too much detail on it is losing focus a bit.

To point this conversation in a positive way - I really, really hope that you don't get scared off Wikipedia by me telling you this. Wikipedia is pretty cool anyway! Just for people who got their start in 2006 like me, it used to be totally okay to add all this detail, and there were more articles on really important topics in obviously rough shape. Wikipedia of 2017 is a bit more mature, which is cool, but it changes "I got to write the League of Legends article!" into "Uh, I added two sentences about League's early development from an obscure Riot interview done in 2011 I found on the Internet." Less low-hanging fruit. If you're truly set on adding League info, I'd suggest that the "Development", "Release", and "Reception" sections could all use some huge cleanup; that means stuff like finding info on the development of the game by Riot, reviews and re-reviews as the game continued, and how exactly the game was released to players and how it changed over time. The anti-"game guide" people won't complain about that kind of info. There's also Wikia for high detail on champs. There's also a bunch of obscure stuff that's still woefully developed - some obscure video game you liked or hometown attraction that's still a "stub" of a short article. If you're expanding one of those, nobody will complain about anything you want to do with it, pretty much. Happy to offer suggestions and help as needed - I hope I don't come off as TOO negative above, I just want to try and save you from the experience of pouring your heart and soul into a lot of work, then watching it all be deleted in a discussion afterward. Go for it if you think you can make it work, but consider yourself warned! If you want to increase the odds of that article surviving Articles for Deletion, I strongly recommend having as many third-party sources as you can find - that is, sources that aren't the Riot website. So, if there's some article in some totally unrelated magazine talking about how cute Teemo is, that's more powerful than a ten-page discussion of Teemo from Riot, a forum, or a user-edited wiki, as far as Wikipedia is concerned. User:TedEdwards Gotcha. Been doing a lot of work recently I'm sure you have noticed. With regards to the Night King image, I got it from HBO's viewer guide, which is a source that we have previously used and other wikis, such as the Game of Thrones one, utilize with permission from HBO. My problem actually is that the image doesn't follow WP:NFCC#3a which says Multiple items of non-free content are not used if one item can convey equivalent significant information. User:TedEdwardsWould disagree there. It's the principal image of the character in their information box and clearly identifies the Richard Brake portrayal of the character, which some could argue is more iconic because of Hardhome. The other image relates to the production and design behind the character and doesn't clearly show their appearance given that its not only split, but also different performer and lower quality. The other proposed version of the lead is quite barren and does not sufficiently cover his mayoral career or the notable circumstances surrounding his presidential campaign, namely his party switch and spending, both of which have dominated American media outlets. I contend that my edits offer a clearer and more informative lead for the article, and that because he is currently more notable for his 2020 presidential run, that his infobox picture should reflect that.
