Can we rescue anything?[edit]

So the course is finished, students are not going to fix anything more, yet I feel a bit sad that User:Bai0926/Economic inequality in China, Draft:Anti-Taiwan independence sentiment and Draft:U.S. assistance defend Taiwan remain unpublished. Hey Professor @Piotrus and happy Christmas, new year, and etc.!
  1. "Economic inequality in China" can be trimmed down, tidied and published as a start-class. It provides a good start on a serious topic that is certainly notable.
  2. I don't think "Anti-Taiwan independence sentiment" is worth of an individual article. I would trim it down and put it in Taiwan_independence_movement#Opposition_to_independence. Note that the section I linked is without citation, so some source (albeit POV and primary) is better than no source.
  3. At this point I think "U.S. assistance defend Taiwan" could be published as a separate article titled "U.S. assistance in Taiwan defense"... or even just "U.S. defense of Taiwan", but I am not very sure about its future.

An essay for your students[edit]

@Piotrus, hope all is well. After I looked at your students' translations from the Chinese Wikipedia, I wrote down a manual to help them. Please see  Courtesy link: User:TheLonelyPather/Essays/Guide for a translator. This is not Chinese-specific, but intended to help all translators. Feel free to share it with your students, and don't hesitate to leave feedback if you think something is missing.

I've fixed a stray character. Based on my repeated advice to students, I'd suggest adding the following three topics:
  • ensure that your references are properly formatted using citation templates. They should have information on the author name, date of publication, publisher, title and URL if the source is online. If the original title is not English, provide both the original title and a translation of it. For books, provide a narrow page range for the soruce cited.
  • proofread your article using free services such as Grammarly and AI tools
  • if the original article you are translating links to other untranslated articles, link them from your translated article using Template:Interlanguage_link

If you may, do consider adding a topic about attribution. When working on drafts over at AfC, sometimes we find translated drafts without proper attribution and it takes up more than necessary amount of time of the reviewers to determine if it is a copyright issue. (See also Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Taiwan_1000#Attributing translations).
On romanisation, do consider as well if there is a common English name about the subject instead of just romanising the name from the original language. i.e. Joker Xue vs Xue Zhiqian. This easier to search for if the subject is popular. For the more obscure titles, i.e. 京师生春诗意图*, it will definitely take a longer time to search for an English common name. If you are not a subject matter expert, it can be forgiven if you choose to romanise from the original language instead.
* I bring this specific example out because it is a relatively lesser known, or even an obscure work in the English speaking world, and there is a draft with a okay-ish attempt at translating the title: Draft:A scroll of poems about spring in the capital. (And it took me a couple of hours to find something online, (sic) "Bird's eye view of the capital", the time was spent rather unwisely which is otherwise if one's obsessed with the topic, even just for that two hours, or is a subject matter expert and knows what to look for.) – robertsky (talk) 15:14, 18 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I forgot to mention 1) "connect your article to the translated one using the "add language links" button and 2) add categories (check categories in the original article and see if they have equivalents in English, if not, try to find the closest relevant parent category from that tree). If everything is all set, I think this guide would be a good thing to refer to your students, i.e. you could use it to show to them what is expected out of a translation homework, and what is missing from their translation. I imagine this is much better than you typing out your own explanations of policies over and over.

Understanding Infoboxes both documented and non documented.[edit]

Hello gooday sir! I have seen many article pages with undocumented or unknown parameters, according to this Template:Infobox3cols, this and this. Wikipedia tends to allow the use of unknown parameters to make the page more convenience. The Infobox artist and musician does not always work well when you tend to include chinese-name, Korea-name or Thai name, even when you added it with 'modules', It will shrink and sometimes result to coding errors with horrible results. So in this article Draft:Li Ziting, i even separated it into 3 Infoboxes to get a perfect result while also making it clear and understandable. Thanks. I understand where you're coming from, @Thisasia. I think Teresa Teng offers a good example of incorporating Chinese information using infoboxes. Personal opinion, but I think the Li Ziting draft's infoboxes take up too much space, the font size is too big, and it uses boldface throughout. Hello @TheLonelyPather, I have just fixed the issues you pointed out including removing of the big font-size, font-weight and margin of the two undocumented Infoboxes together, so the only difference is that it now has 2 Infoboxes while Teresa Teng has one Infobox. But is important to know that Teresa Teng's page has only one infobox Chinese-name, while Draft:Li Ziting has 3 Infoboxes-names including chinese, Thai and korea hence an undocumented parameters are needed to include all. Note that the first Infobox of the Draft:Li Ziting page is wiki documented Infobox-person, so it doesn't work properly together with an undocumented parameters even when you add 'modules' hence a separated Infobox is required. But if this is not enough I will still try my best and creat a new Infobox-person and see if I can possibly achieve one Infobox. What do you think? @Thisasia, thanks for your attempt. Let me be a bit technical here. If we look at the source code of "Teresa Teng", we see that it uses something like | module2 = {{Infobox Chinese ... to include an infobox for the Chinese name within the Infobox person. Maybe you can do the same for Li Ziting? You could have | module2 = {{Infobox Chinese ... , | module2 = {{Infobox Korean name ... . The Thai name can be put under the Infobox Chinese, surprisingly. Please have a closer look at Template:Infobox Chinese and Template: Infobox Korean name. In this way, you can take out all the names from the "musical career" box.
Now, for the "musical career" part, I suggest you have a look at Taylor Swift, which also has a "musical career" part using available templates and modules.
I am suggesting you to do so because this will utilise available templates to the maximum, so other editors will have an easier time to edit the page. But again, the content of your draft is the most important. Right now the prose is only a paragraph. Please consider adding more information, especially the information mentioned in the infoboxes. Excellent. At least the infobox looks much better now–hope you can agree. I hope you expand the prose with sources that are WP:reliable and demonstrate WP:significant coverage. You may find WP:SINGER helpful in determining the notability of Li Ziting. Judging by the Chinese Wikipedia article zh:李紫婷, she could be notable by some of the awards she won, and her participation in Rocket Girls 101. And another point: infobox is really not the centerpiece of an article. The prose is. An example: Ralph Vaughan Williams, a featured article about a composer, does not even have an infobox. A good infobox summarises facts, instead of listing facts. You can provide information of Li's names, ancestry, education, agency, record companies, etc. in the body of the article. WikiCup 2024 March newsletter[edit]

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Liu Futong comment[edit]

Hi, you asked about where I got the birth and death years for Liu Futong. The death year is from the year Zhang Shicheng captured Anfeng and killed Liu. The birth year is from looking at Wikidata and Chinese Wikipedia, but I couldn’t find any English references for it. Should I still keep it?

Hi @Lyn1644! Neither Wikidata nor Chinese Wikipedia are WP:reliable sources, so I would suggest that you delete the birth year and simply put "d. 1363".

I looked at your draft for a bit more. Have you thought about using {{cite book}} and {{sfn}}? Feel free to look at the source code of Sacred Heart Cathedral, Hohhot, to see how exactly it works (kinda like magic, I know). I am suggesting this so you can put up the full "Mote, Frederick; Twitchett, Denis (1988). The Cambridge History of China Volume 7 The Ming Dynasty, 1368-1644" citation at the end of the article, and only put in the page number in the footnotes. Thanks, I'll try to use that. I was copy-pasting the citations into the basic citation editor before and changing the page number, so thankfully it wasn't too hard. But your method looks cleaner and preserves the ISBN link.

Here's a step-by-step guide:
1. In your "References" section, create a subsection "Books" (or "Journals", or whatever you seem fit), and put the books you wish to cite in this format:
* {{cite book | ...}}
* {{cite book | ...}}
* {{cite book | ...}}
Make sure you fill out each citation correctly. You will only fill them out once under the "References" section.
2. In your "References" section, right above the "References" title (and before all the books you've listed), create a subsection "Citations" and simply put {{reflist}} below it.
3. If you wish to cite a book in your body paragraphs, use sfn like this:{{sfn|Author1 last name|Author2 last name|...(other last names)|year|page ranges}}.
For example, "Mote, Frederick; Twitchett, Denis (1988). The Cambridge History of China Volume 7 The Ming Dynasty, 1368-1644, Part I. Cambridge University Press. pp. 39-40" will be {{sfn|Mote|Twitchett|1988|pp=39–40}}
The associated footnote will appear naturally in your "Citations" subsection.
