Quick question regarding Census stuff[edit]

Are you adding the information to articles using a script and/or via template substitution, by chance? — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 02:14, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I wrote a script that reads .csv files from the Census website and writes the section. If you know how to automatically download .csv files from the Census, I'd appreciate it. It's time-consuming and I can only do this sporadically. TheWeeklyIslander (talk) 02:18, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I unfortunately don't have a good way of automating that. Sorry :(
Red-tailed hawk (nest) 20:14, 19 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No worries. I was talking with someone today about using Scrapy. Might work.
Have a good one, my dude. TheWeeklyIslander (talk) 00:08, 20 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Account[edit]

Hello, this is just a standard inquiry for some new accounts. What does the account name mean? It's not a name for an organization or publication, is it? And please disclose the names of every other Wikipedia account you've ever had. You just started a new account knowing a lot. Thanks. — Smuckola(talk) 07:03, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, the account name is a reference to a book I was listening to when I made the account (The Colorado Kid by Stephen King). My account is not affiliated with any organization or publication. I've never had any Wikipedia accounts before this one. I don't know much, I just looked at the source editing for articles.
Am I doing something wrong? TheWeeklyIslander (talk) 03:57, 19 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) "please disclose the names of every other Wikipedia account you've ever had." I don't see what gives you the authority to ask that. Kk.urban (talk) 05:27, 28 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Where is the census data coming from?[edit]

I noticed that some of the 2020 census data you added to Bonner Springs, Kansas is different from the data I found. Where are you getting this from? For example, this census page says that there were 3,037 households, but you wrote that there were 3,060 households. I also couldn't find the number of families on the census website. The racial data also corresponded with the census table, but the percent Hispanic was different. Kk.urban (talk) 05:31, 28 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Kk.urban,
I am glad you pointed that out. I accidentally mixed up an ACS subject table and a census sheet for a handful of values. Looking at spreadsheets will do that sometimes! I believe I've fixed my mistakes, but if you see any more I would be grateful to be made aware. TheWeeklyIslander (talk) 01:57, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I haven't checked any other pages. Are you using some kind of script, or doing it all manually? Also, where does the number of families come from? Kk.urban (talk) 02:01, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I just read the section above where you said you are using a script. If so, would all the other pages you updated have the same errors? Kk.urban (talk) 02:03, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I am using a script. It does mean that there are some subject table/P1 values instead of P2, but I didn't get too far in, so I'll be able to update those within the week. Your insight was very helpful in finally automating everything! It now takes ~3 seconds per city to generate the section. TheWeeklyIslander (talk) 02:10, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's good. And what about the number of families? Kk.urban (talk) 06:59, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That comes from ACS 5-year subject table S1101. TheWeeklyIslander (talk) 14:33, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Which would be better represented by table P16, variable P16_002N. Good point! TheWeeklyIslander (talk) 14:44, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, would you please generate these sections for a small number of locations I will list here (about 20)? Kk.urban (talk) 19:23, 1 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You betcha. I've been swamped, but I can get those for you. TheWeeklyIslander (talk) 03:00, 2 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have 16 at the moment:

Hi Kk.urban,
If I made my code open to the community, do you think people would use it? It would take some time to make it easy to use, but I'm tossing that idea around right now given how busy I have been and will likely be for the foreseeable future.
Best,
TheWeeklyIslander TheWeeklyIslander (talk) 23:32, 9 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think so, but I've never used code like this on Wikipedia before, so I don't know what I'd need to do it. Kk.urban (talk) 02:08, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Is data available for community?[edit]

Is demographics data available for unincorporated Eastshore, Kansas, similar to data you added to unincorporated Pilsen, Kansas#Demographics? • SbmeirowTalk • 02:43, 15 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Sbmeirow,
I have updated the census info for Eastshore. I had to override a condition I had placed in my code that had been triggered. Thank you for bringing it to my attention! TheWeeklyIslander (talk) 22:57, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for adding the data!! I'll get back to you if I find any more. Thanks again. • SbmeirowTalk • 05:45, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, my dude. Have a good one! TheWeeklyIslander (talk) 05:51, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Though you aren't finished working your way through the alphabet of Kansas articles, I decided to examine all "CDP"-type community articles, then report any that are missing the 2020 Census text here just to make sure they don't get overlooked. These aren't priority items, so get to them when ever it is best for you. Thanks in advance! • SbmeirowTalk • 00:45, 18 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

MISSING 2020 CENSUS SECTION

Inclusion of ACS in census subsections[edit]

Thanks for updating the census figures at Wenatchee, Washington (and a few other articles). Please note that the ACS is separate from the decennial census and including these estimates in the 2020 census subsection is misleading. I've gone ahead and removed them from the Wenatchee-area articles and cleaned up the formatting; in the future, please do not use all-caps in citations and format references more carefully to match the existing style (e.g. using MDY instead of YMD). SounderBruce 07:58, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi SounderBruce,
I am aware that the ACS and decennial census are not the same, which is why I cited them and had a hyperlink to the ACS Wikipedia page. Would you be comfortable for that data to be reintroduced if I changed the sub-heading from being "2020 census" to being "2020 census and ACS" or simply "2020"? The advent of the ACS in 2005 caused the Census Bureau to stop including that information in the decennial census post-2000, but it is very clearly important data that should be available to readers.
I apologize for the formatting issue and I am making the requisite changes to the capitalization. Could you explain the date formatting more, please? It looks consistent in other articles I have worked on. Aren't American pages defaulted to MDY in the references section regardless of whether they are input as YMD or DMY? TheWeeklyIslander (talk) 21:02, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Several edits with mathematically impossible figures[edit]

The following pages include 9-digit long negative money values added in your edits:

I simply removed the numbers from Quonochontaug, Rhode Island, but there are so many that I don't know what the best approach is. There may be more subtle errors as well. Please try to be more careful when editing pages. Capybara 110 (talk) 19:32, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Changing census numbers in charts[edit]

Hello TheWeeklyIslander. Please be careful when editing tables as you did in Ferguson, Missouri. The data that you are pulling and adding is race alone with Hispanics included in the racial counts. The chart you edited excludes Hispanics from the racial counts and includes them in a separate category as stated (which is why the totals add up to 100%).
