Mentoring Help

Hello Yanksta! Thanks for your offer of help. It is greatly appreciated, since I am new to contributing to wikipedia and as you might imagine a bit intimidated!!
As a starter, would you be able to look at a translation i have done from french to english on the article abidjan. the current english article on this is not very informative, where as the french version was quite encyclopaedic, and so i have done the translation, in the hope that it can be reaplced. however, it is currently created only as a user subpage @ User:Mayalekhni/Abidjan. I have not yet added internal links, images, references etc. since at the moment I am looking for information comparison rather than quality. A second hurdle I have come across is that I have made substantial expansion to the article Gangotri National Park from a survey report done by the wildlife institute of india, however i don't know how to create a reference or external link to the article.

Once again, i appreciate your help!!

Adoption

Alright, that's good; thanks, The Rhymesmith, for letting me know. Have a good day yourself. Qwerty (talk) 08:23, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks once again!

Thanks for the tip re embassies, I will be sure to visit them... looking forward to further guidance from you!!--Mayalekhni 11:08, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

Your humble student!! :-)

Hi! As you might have seen on my talk page, i got a bot notice about the copyright on an image. so have been knocking about trying to get rid of it, but can't admin access only. however, the image is from wikicommons, but obviously i embedded it incorrectly so it came up as no copyright.. anyway, still pottering about with translations, have updated another article, Boundiali from french into english, waiting for feedback on that one.

not much else at the moment, i watched a documentary on hatshepsut on discovery and have been hooked on reading the egyptian stuff here, so have ignored my contriution efforts!! :-)

To The Rhymesmith:

Thanks for responding so quickly for help. I hope you read my entry to Hu12. I am a little perplexed about making entries into articles under poverty, street children, homelessness, etc. If you know someone that could help me I wuld appreciate it. Donald 918 01:35, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the help. I get confused on some moments.

I'll Take care of it myself. Thanks again for the help :) --esanchez, Sign your name here! 06:06, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

Your mediation is most welcomed

Dear Rhymesmith I am thrilled that finally somebody notices the situation in Reza Shah, and Mohammad Reza Pahlavi pages. The edit war is now about one year old, as a group of Iranians try to delete many references that I listed them today in the discussion pages of the two articles for you to see. I am open minded about changing the tone of presenting these facts, or even deleting them provided valid evidences support their deletions. I thank you again for your involvement and hopefully this will result in a more productive use of time. Cheers Artaxerex 03:38, 23 July 2007 (UTC) 06:22, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the rv

help with merging : Evrard

As for translating, that's really not a problem (my French is strong enough)--more the question was jsut how much I should translate and if I translate mostly the whole book should I make the book the article (is in publich sphere, now, having been printed over a hundred years ago). Plus, it has some info on other topics--like Cysoing, Unroch, Walgaire, Princesse Gisele and whatnot... Not sure how to handle it all...

As for the other matter, merging, I most definitely like some help w/that--I'm basically a total n00b and still have to reference everything for editing; I also don't want to step on too many toes jsut taking over mergings and so forth. Also, there may be an issue with the integrity of linked data (I have to look into that some more), but I also don't know how to mark those for review/revision...

Thnx, in advance! (Sjcarpediem 05:21, 23 July 2007 (UTC))

which page

I'd like Evrard to be the main page; but a disambiguation page is probably a good idea for redirects (I also don't know how to do that...)

Sjcarpediem 20:56, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

double re-dir-whats?

Yes, please do. I'll get to work on the other points you mentioned.

Sjcarpediem 21:03, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

weaning

I'll be sure to make some more edits, today, in the direction you suggest. And THNX no end!

Inapropriate behaviour

Hi, I came over here as to your invitation on the helpdesk.

I'd be happy to deal with the situation myself. I just wish to do a good job of it, and being a newbie, (as in active participation, not as in time, I actually got here back in NuPedia times) I thougth better I ask first rather than do something stupid.

The users in question are MichelleCrisp and Masalai. You are correct that user Michellecrisp responded to the abuse, in effect defending herself. For example, on her own userpage she wrote:

Can anyone see the WP:OWN and racist assumptions that all Aboriginal Australians have problems with English above? Michellecrisp
12:22, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

As a direct answer to Masalais attacks. She also posted a "be civil" warning on his user-talk, along with a defence of herself (which shouldn't be needed, she did nothing wrong and there's nothing wrong with her english, and even if there where, it wouldn't warrant personal attacks.) LibStar also added a warning to Masalais user-talk.

Masalai removed both warnings, and MichelleCrisps message from his user-talk, and thereafter posted *another* unacceptable message on her user-talk. It was worded politely "dear Madam", blabla, but there's no doubt it was meant to belittle and ridicule. At this point he had been, directly, informed several times that she is a native speaker of english. (which shouldn't matter anyway)

So, what would you say is a sensible response ? I think Masalai should get to hear from 3rd parties that his behaviour is unacceptable. Michellecrisp defends herself, but it's been ineffective, and makes what is really a one-sided unwarranted attack look like a quarrel. Which it ain't. At no point have I seen MichelleCrisp post anything even *remotely* offensive.

Adding more warnings to his userpage seems unlikely to be very convincing, since he has already removed and ignored two.

--Eivind Kjørstad 09:11, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

No actually, it doesn't seem like it. On the 20th of july, he responded to her "be civil" warning on his userpage with:
Oh, dear madam, I note that you have urged on my user page that I "be civil." I shall try. Thank you indeed. Shall I in future post
such messages on your own user page? One notes the obvious defects as to civility, grammar and spelling in your many overtures to
overseas Wikipedia contributors. May one assume that the usual Wikipedia norms pertain? Kind regards, dear Madam.

Which is, as you may notice, ANYTHING but civil. Thereafter, on the 23rd, he removed all traces of the dispute from his own userpage, and after that he has contributed nothing at all to any page whatsoever.

I guess that means I'll wait, I've put his contributions on my watchlist and will keep an eye on them over the next few weeks. Other than that I guess its best to let it pass. It's always possible he has taken the warnings to heart, that'd be good.

Thanks. I will leave a message on his talk page to that effect. Not sure if he has email enabled, but you may also want to consider dropping him a note that way as well. Pastordavid 14:24, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks a lot, because I was confused for a moment. You also have a good day. Miranda 04:47, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

How can I become an editor?

I'm only new, but I am curious as to the requirements for becoming a Wikipedia editor! I read you used to be one?

Teacher

No, it suits the situation perfectly. I actually asked on IRC for a couple people with PHDs to comment. So I guess your comment suited it great! Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 08:22, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

Um, I'm following the teacher issue at the helpdesk, and I can't help asking: is this a case of WP:DNFT? Lisatwo 08:51, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

Userpage/VandalProof

No problems at all, and a small credit notice is much appreciated :) If you need any help with designing it, feel free to ask. I'll run over and whiz through the VP applications in a second. Cheers, Daniel 10:36, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

Adoption and Mentorship:

I just read your comment on Giggy's talk page, and am butting into your conversation, which I hope you don't mind. Anyway, I'm glad that you are merging mentorship and adoption, unfortunately it didn't get as much discussion as I had hoped it would as time went on, but that's life. Anyway, I think this means that if mentorship isn't kept all together, a "non-voluntary" adoption system should be implemented, and submitted to MedCom for review. Anyway, I'm just interested in what you think about that. --HAL2008talk 23:49, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

Sure, I'd be glad to help. I'll head over to AAU right now. Just tell me what needs to be done, and I'll do it, otherwise I'll just work on what looks like it needs doing. --HAL2008talk 00:57, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
Well, in lieu of something creepy like "Vandal Rehab"... I was thinking "Adoption ordered by ArbCom" or something like that... though it doesn't flow like "vandal rehab" it certainly sounds more professional. --HAL2008talk 01:04, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
Sounds good. I also put Template:Merging on WP:MENTOR, which I figured should be left until we finish there. I'll start working on the involuntary adoption now. --HAL2008talk 01:13, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
Absolutely no idea if you're still on, however I'd like to make a note to you that I have written out some of the page. I'd like you to review it at this point. As for me, I'm going to sleep, as the little clock on my computer says it's already 02:35. --HAL2008talk 01:36, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, I left a little note on the case linking to the page, noting of course that it isn't even close to done, and won't be so informal when it's completed. Anyway, I'll hopefully have it finished by tomorrow at about this time. ----HAL2008talk 01:41, 29 July 2007 (UTC)

Responding to your note on my talk. It's been awhile since the Arbitration Committee prescribed mentorship for a user, at least that I recall. If you want to gain input from arbitrators, however, the best place might be to post your question on Wikipedia talk:Requests for arbitration. Regards, Newyorkbrad 01:17, 29 July 2007 (UTC)

Barstar for you!

The Adopt-a-User Barnstar
For taking the initiative and starting the merge of WP:MENTOR and WP:AAU, and contacting ArbCom about Mandated Adoption. --HAL2008talk 14:14, 29 July 2007 (UTC)

Mediation

Greetings Rhymesmith. Please consider mediation on Mohammad Reaz Pahlavi page. I have provided some sourced material from Western academic sources and publications such as Time magazine. However, shervink and his Iranian freinds are trying to vote to ban me and deleting all the sourced material. Please see: ([1]) ([2]), ([3]), ([4], and ...

I have asked him to stop his vandalism in removing content and references from Reza Shah, and Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, which according to his own definition in here ([5] is vandalism. He is offended by this and has called me here; ([6]), an A****.

Thank you very much Artaxerex 19:10, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
