Hello Rhymesmith, just got logged in again today after a gap, so sorry not to have replied earlier. I have today made some changes to the article on Vietnam, which typically for me were changing and I hope clarifying links etc. I did something similar to the article on Nhat Hanh the buddhist teacher a short while ago. I am wondering how/if I can add an article about a person fairly well known in his field, still living and active, who I feel is more notable than several of the 'biography' articles currently in WP. It is not my intention to finalize my presentation unsourced, but rather to compose and then later go back to sources that validate the information presented.

Granted, I am aware that I, like the many scholars who have attempted to offer a generic description of Gnostic belief systems, may have taken on more than I can chew as it were, because as I see it, literally every author who has been published has failed.

That is not to say that, the idea that Gnostic teaching are related to, or mean a special knowledge of, or insight of the of the individual in relation to an immortal soul is to some degree already supported from within the Wikipedia data base, for example, associating Gnostic teaching with the tenets and system of Pythagoras by which certain vices and virtues were to be punished and rewarded after one’s physical death, because that would be an erroneous assumption.

The position I have attempted to present is supported, for example, by the book “Rethinking ‘Gnosticism’: An Argument for Dismantling a Dubious Category” by Michael Allen Williams and Paul-Hubert Poirier’s statement that Michael Williams’ “questioning the very definition and description of this phenomenon”, and his “detailed analysis of the clichés”… “shows convincingly how they have contributed to a distorted and biased approach to the sources.”

The problem is that while I am not published within the Wikipedia data base, I am a published Journal author, and in the body of my publications I too had used the term “gnostic” in association with the mystical traditions and in association with the subject of redemption. I, like other all other people who do this, using the word in its modern context, did so in error. Such that, I now know that my past usages are an oxymoronic use of the word given its original or correct meaning.

As I explained to Nixdorf, I have already received permission CCG.org Secretary Erica Cox to support the position presented with quotes from their publications like, "Anyone who said that when they died they went to heaven, showed by that statement they were a Gnostic and not a Christian (see Justin Martyr, Second Apology). " And, Nidorf responded:

Hi Bill, the problem with you edits surely isn't permissions to quote someone, you generally do not need permission for that. To expand on the problem in your edits, I get the feeling that you are a religious person and want to uphold Christianity by denouncing what you percieve to be fallacies (heresies), and in the question of Gnosticism you most certainly take sides with the established Christian church. The problem is that Wikipedia is not the place to carry out such debates. Also, in rewriting the introduction to Gnosticism, you entered much duplicate information (such as the fact that Gnostics were inspired by Plato) for no good reason, the introduction is very nice and concise as it stands in my opinion, and your additions would do under som sub-heading such as "Christian reaction to Gnosticism". Thus, the Gnostic vision of redemption involves the mistaken philosophy whereby by a Shade is called a Soul and the ultimate reality is represented by only one of the various dimensions within the context of string-theory or M-theory, and in that dimension life and all matter simply ceases to exist. As such, I now know my use of the terms like “Jewish and Christian Gnostic Redemption claims” is an oxymoronic use of the word given its original or correct meaning. My error can be seen in online documents like this one:

…the principals involved are presented by the various religions as an opportunity for growth and evolution in a glorious partnership with the infinite manifestations of creation; a process leading up to a time when all mankind is united in the Word of God (Acts 17:22-23; Apocalypse 15:12b). It is the essence of Jewish and Christian Gnostic Redemption claims, and is prophesied to be utilized during the prodigious period of human ascent. This common bond of mankind, so that redemption may occur, is symbolized by a time when "michael rise up, the great prince, who standeth for the children of thy people" (Daniel 12: la)…

And, while I’m sure that the site administrator would be more than willing to allow me to insert a disclaimer, my error is also present in publications like:

Greene, W. (1987). An essay on the quantum field-theory concept or conversion and redemption: The function of contemplative exercises as a parallel distributive processing system, effecting quality of life and longevity (life-everlasting). The Journal of Religion and Psychical Research, 10 (4), 217-226.

And, there is no way I can ever fix that, so my only recourse is to present the case that people need a clear definition for the proper use of the word so that others might not make the same mistake in the future. And, so, now I find myself here at Wikipedia.

Monarchial styles

I do recall seeing that policy somewhere, but I'm pretty sure it only made sure that monarchial titles aren't included in the article title or before the name of the person in question at the start of the article. (By the way, I can no longer find the policy, would you mind pointing it out to me?)

The style is used on many articles about monarchs who have style boxes, most notably all of the Princes of Monaco (with the exception of the current reigning prince, Albert II). Take a look at Rainier III, Prince of Monaco, Louis II, Prince of Monaco, Albert I, Prince of Monaco, Charles III, Prince of Monaco, etc.

At least in college, we had two identical suits, and wore them alternate weeks. It wasn't until years later that I learned that this was probably due to the possibility of body lice - they die after a week away from their hosts. Hi Yanksta! I'm just curious as to why you edited the education page. my own entry, in good faith, was to point out the basic inaccuracies in the sub-heading "Challenges", effectively praising the modern school system. You deleted both the inaccuracies and my comments, and left a hand hanging, so to speak. Why, may I ask? (I do recognize that editing is inevitable; the concept of education is controversial, and my edit left the original text so as to offer a more reasonable and accurate description of the other hand.)

Thank you for your comment. I reverted the contribution in line with previous editors with whom I agree. The fact that the word "arguably" is used indicates that the statement is a point-of-view, and as such it is obviously not a neutral point-of-view. It is much more even-handed to use a phrase which allows the reader to form their own view about whether the school is at the top or just near the top. If you can provide an appropriate reliable and independent reference to support Eton's place at the very top in the world, then the text could be replaced. Mentoring Help

Hello Yanksta! Thanks for your offer of help. It is greatly appreciated, since I am new to contributing to wikipedia and as you might imagine a bit intimidated!!
As a starter, would you be able to look at a translation i have done from french to english on the article abidjan. the current english article on this is not very informative, where as the french version was quite encyclopaedic, and so i have done the translation, in the hope that it can be reaplced. however, it is currently created only as a user subpage @ User:Mayalekhni/Abidjan. I have not yet added internal links, images, references etc. since at the moment I am looking for information comparison rather than quality. A second hurdle I have come across is that I have made substantial expansion to the article Gangotri National Park from a survey report done by the wildlife institute of india, however i don't know how to create a reference or external link to the article.

Hi! Dear Rhymesmith I am thrilled that finally somebody notices the situation in Reza Shah, and Mohammad Reza Pahlavi pages. The edit war is now about one year old, as a group of Iranians try to delete many references that I listed them today in the discussion pages of the two articles for you to see. I am open minded about changing the tone of presenting these facts, or even deleting them provided valid evidences support their deletions. help with merging : Evrard

As for translating, that's really not a problem (my French is strong enough)--more the question was jsut how much I should translate and if I translate mostly the whole book should I make the book the article (is in publich sphere, now, having been printed over a hundred years ago). Plus, it has some info on other topics--like Cysoing, Unroch, Walgaire, Princesse Gisele and whatnot... Not sure how to handle it all...

As for the other matter, merging, I most definitely like some help w/that--I'm basically a total n00b and still have to reference everything for editing; I also don't want to step on too many toes jsut taking over mergings and so forth. Also, there may be an issue with the integrity of linked data (I have to look into that some more), but I also don't know how to mark those for review/revision...

Inapropriate behaviour

Hi, I came over here as to your invitation on the helpdesk.

I'd be happy to deal with the situation myself. I just wish to do a good job of it, and being a newbie, (as in active participation, not as in time, I actually got here back in NuPedia times) I thougth better I ask first rather than do something stupid.

The users in question are MichelleCrisp and Masalai. You are correct that user Michellecrisp responded to the abuse, in effect defending herself. For example, on her own userpage she wrote:

As a direct answer to Masalais attacks. She also posted a "be civil" warning on his user-talk, along with a defence of herself (which shouldn't be needed, she did nothing wrong and there's nothing wrong with her english, and even if there where, it wouldn't warrant personal attacks.) LibStar also added a warning to Masalais user-talk.

Masalai removed both warnings, and MichelleCrisps message from his user-talk, and thereafter posted *another* unacceptable message on her user-talk. It was worded politely "dear Madam", blabla, but there's no doubt it was meant to belittle and ridicule. At this point he had been, directly, informed several times that she is a native speaker of english. (which shouldn't matter anyway)

So, what would you say is a sensible response ? I think Masalai should get to hear from 3rd parties that his behaviour is unacceptable. Michellecrisp defends herself, but it's been ineffective, and makes what is really a one-sided unwarranted attack look like a quarrel. Which it ain't. At no point have I seen MichelleCrisp post anything even *remotely* offensive.

Adding more warnings to his userpage seems unlikely to be very convincing, since he has already removed and ignored two.

No actually, it doesn't seem like it. On the 20th of july, he responded to her "be civil" warning on his userpage with:

Oh, dear madam, I note that you have urged on my user page that I "be civil." I shall try. Thank you indeed. Shall I in future post 
such messages on your own user page? One notes the obvious defects as to civility, grammar and spelling in your many overtures to 
overseas Wikipedia contributors. May one assume that the usual Wikipedia norms pertain? Kind regards, dear Madam.

Which is, as you may notice, ANYTHING but civil. Thereafter, on the 23rd, he removed all traces of the dispute from his own userpage, and after that he has contributed nothing at all to any page whatsoever.

I guess that means I'll wait, I've put his contributions on my watchlist and will keep an eye on them over the next few weeks. Other than that I guess its best to let it pass. It's always possible he has taken the warnings to heart, that'd be good.

Adopt me!

Yeah, that would be cool if you could adopt me, I'm new and hoping to use my time here writing, creating and editing. Im a journalism student and I think this would be a beneficial side project, you know? I did try my hand at creating an article for Jael Strauss and Koby Abberton although I'm not sure I've done it right. There's someone else I'd like to add to Wikipedia but I'm just waiting to see if I'm submitting correctly.

Adoption and Mentorship:

I just read your comment on Giggy's talk page, and am butting into your conversation, which I hope you don't mind. Anyway, I'm glad that you are merging mentorship and adoption, unfortunately it didn't get as much discussion as I had hoped it would as time went on, but that's life. Anyway, I think this means that if mentorship isn't kept all together, a "non-voluntary" adoption system should be implemented, and submitted to MedCom for review. Responding to your note on my talk. It's been awhile since the Arbitration Committee prescribed mentorship for a user, at least that I recall. I have asked him to stop his vandalism in removing content and references from Reza Shah, and Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, which according to his own definition in here ([6] is vandalism. He is offended by this and has called me here; ([7]), an A****.

Articles with no sources that have remained on Wikipedia

I'm just wondering how an article for Jarah Mariano hasn't been deleted due to lack of refrences? I'm a huge model fan so I know a lot about underground model's like her (so I'm not saying she doesn't exist or anything) but I noticed her Wikipedia article only really has her MySpace page and some website as the links, and no refrences at all. Surely that's grounds for deletion? Again, I'm not suggesting it be deleted, I'm just confused as to why that particular article has remained on Wikipedia for quite some time without being considered for deletion etc, whereas other articles or contributions are removed due to lack of sources? Struck me as odd and I wasn't sure of the reasons behind it. I've only made 3 articles in my Wikipedia life time, two of which havent been deleted, one was because she was losing reality contestant (not notable!)

Eliska Amor page needs some form of protection

In the past two days there have been 36 vandalism edits to Eliska Amor's Wikipedia article from Chaplain College's ISP. Seeing as though it will be almost impossible to block the school from editing, is there a way to protect the page from these repetitive vandalisms? The user's (or user, as it would suggest by the identical vandalism edits to Eliska Amor, Ashley Olsen, Mary-Kate Olsen and Leonardo DiCaprio) IP appears which means they have not signed up for an account, therefore protecting the page to only registered users would be sufficient, right? —--Rosario 07:24, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

There have been 10 more vandalism edits from the same Chaplain College since I wrote you this note yesterday, making almost 50 vandal edits in 3 days. The path of vandal (they also vandal the Ashley Olsen, Mary-Kate Olsen and Leonardo DiCaprio page in the exact same manner each time I check their contributions, leading me to think it is one person. Vengalil

Just happened to see your comment on the talk page of Vengalil. While indeed the family was influential in the colonial period, holding vast areas of land besides having several renowned members, and while they were also related through marriage to the Cochin Royal family I was interested in know whether you knew anything more about them from before the 19th century.
