Musician article

I'm trying to delete the page you have sent me a warning about, as I am "brand new" to using the Wikipedia and am only trying to help a Musician create a Wikipedia reference and as you can tell stumbling through. That's fine; like I said it isn't really meant to be moved to the main page until it's finished. May I suggest, with all due respect, that you don't submit the RfA in the forseeable future? I think it's unlikely (read: impossible given the circumstances) that you will pass. You've got 500-odd edits, you don't tend to use edit summaries that much and all of your edits seem to be anti-vandal work; nothing in other sections of the wiki that would give the impression you know policy regarding anything other than vandalism. In addition you seem to have vanished for a large chunk of time; as an editor you've effectively been here for about a month. I'd advise submitting it in 3-4 months or so, and spending that time working on things other than anti-vandal work. Ironholds 11:01, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

article "Bottom Girl" needs attention, not reverts

Hi Vandal Destroyer,


First, thanks for your efforts. I contribute randomly and anonymously (not yet set up an account), so I respect anyone who does the down and dirty work of keeping wikipedia running.

You caught my attention because you reverted an edit I made which was just -- not vandalism -- on the page 'Bottom Girl.' I tried to annotate my changes, but it could easily have looked like vandalism. So, since you reverted me (I reverted you too, but you get seniority: so...), I'm gonna try to drop this project in your lap. Here's the problem with the article, hopefully you can handle it more elegantly than I was trying to (I'm not super-familiar with Wikipedia best-practices): a link in the article, in fact the only live weblink, was to a site that my browser warned me has been distributing malware. I have no idea if the link is valid -- I suspect the citation is valid, but not properly linked (that is, the document it sites may be correct, but the link may or may not be the actual file -- the link is broken, regardless.

I'd invite you to see the changes I made -- documented in an untutored and probably non-standard fashion -- but it's all there. For what it's worth, the link itself is, at the very least, dead. The domain is probably created for the sake of hosting malware -- the domain name seems to have little to do with the content of the citation, and the 'whois' turns up something in Thailand (the link cites a NGO in Hawaii, for what it's worth).

Sorry for the long-winded follow-up, but I wanted to give you as much information as I had.

I see now. I just tried the link and FireFox blocked it as an "Attack site". Thank you for taking the time to point this out to me. I apologize, it just looked like vandalism, since in the history I saw "MALWARE IS HOSTED AT THIS SITE" or something along those lines. To me it appeared as if a malware link was being posted on the article.

Piedmont, Ca

Why have you marked my changes as vandalism? I have cited sources such as http://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/ror/assembly_09_03_04.pdf . Also, any search on the internet shows that Piedmont is registered republican under 11%. Maybe I should write "In contrast with the rest of the United States, ..." Other neighboring areas such as Pleasanton, Fremont, and the Stockton metro area are much more conservative. Try putting "Mostly liberal" after "Extremely affleunt", in a way so that it says something like:

"Piedmont is a small, extremely affluent city in Alameda County, California, United States, which has been described as mostly liberal."

This will give the edit an appearance of being constructive with the source.

If the vandalism gets really bad, you can usually get it semi-protected for a few hours. Admins really don't like protecting user talk pages for long periods of time, because it removes the only way of contacting a user in a timely manner. So the most you can do usually is revert/warn/report and put up with it. If it gets out of hand, file a report on WP:RFPP. Cheers! J.delanoygabsadds 04:50, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

Hello , what i posted on the screamo page, it is true . Its not vandalism .

Well that seemed rather like vandalism to me. Even if it wasn't vandalism, It didn't have a concrete source to back it up, and it seemed to violate Wikipedia's Neutral point of view, which attempt to appeal to a worldwie audience. The reason for this is that what one community may think is true about something cannot always be said for a different community. It may be true that mainly homosexuals listen to the album in one community, but it may not be true for other communities. Also, I should suggest that you put talk page posts at the bottom of the talk page instead of the top which you did originally. WP talk page guidelines clearly state: "Users may freely remove comments from their own talk pages, though archiving is preferred. They may also remove some content in archiving. The removal of a warning is taken as evidence that the warning has been read by the user. This specifically includes both registered and anonymous users." Not Vandalizing, Please Eyeball Edits

The following edits to Wendy Northcutt are not vandalism. Several years ago a Wiki-nazi was trying to prove a negative point about the Darwin Awards and slanted the Interview section accordingly. The following edit, which is a rearrangement and minor rewording, is a more accurate reflection of the interviews cited. Also the birth date is completely unsourced, and the word "November" should be removed from the book ISBN section, to standardize the presentation.

"Interviews" section: My proposed edit (which has been twice reverted by, seemingly, a computer.)

Northcutt was interviewed by Mark Emmons of the San Jose Mercury News. Emmons states that "Northcutt considers herself a potential Darwin Award candidate. She describes herself as a klutz."

When interviewed by Salon she said "If there are multiple stupidity genes, then having one or two might make someone creative, while having a dozen would make her a dangerous idiot."

In an interview with a blogger at UK hosting company 123-reg[7], Wendy confirmed that running the Darwin Awards website now takes up all of her time. She said, “I always feel like I’m neglecting my audience, even though I work more than full time.” She also talked about how the Darwin Awards successfully made the transition from being an online publication to being an offline one. The interview mentions that publishers asked her to "remove the stories from the internet. But Wendy was adamant: 'It was a community! I could not do that. Even though it might have cost me a lot of money, I kept saying no.'”

In 2001, Northcutt was interviewed by Jamie Allen of CNN[1]. Northcutt stated, "Before (the awards became popular), we were an insular community and we could make fun of people and those people (or their families) would never find out. But as it got bigger, I realized there was more and more danger of really hurting people." Therefore she treats the subjects of her stories with compassion, and suggests that those who read her books are likely to become more careful with explosives.

Northcutt has been interviewed by CNN[1], Salon.com[2], Jeep van Carr[3], the j.ello report[4], the Spokane Spokesman-Review[5], the SJ Mercury News[6], and the 123-reg blog [7].

Warning or welcoming

Hiya, I notice you do quite a bit of RC patrole, and though I don't do that myself, I realise it's a lot like drinking from the firehose. I would like to ask you to try to see the best of faith in new editors. As an example I'd like to point you to Special:Contributions/90.219.200.237 who you reverted several times, and give vandalism warnings with every edit. The edits were not in bad faith, and therefor not vandalism. If you would have templated him/her with a welcome template, and a suggestion to take it to talk, or take the time (and I know RC patrole is fast and furious) to explain to the user what exactly is wrong with the specific edit, you could well get a better response from the user in question.

How come you leave editors both a level 1 and a level 2 warning for the same edit? See e.g. User talk:201.150.75.243, User talk:24.206.231.192, User talk:68.174.25.247, User talk:68.22.199.125, User talk:96.237.237.139. With User talk:24.206.231.192 there were 54 seconds between the two warnings, so it looks like a manual thing and no Huggle trouble.
