File sourcing problems[edit]

Extended content

File source problem with File:Parazynski.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:Parazynski.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider verifying that you have specified sources for those files as well. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged per Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion, F4. If the image is copyrighted and non-free, the image will be deleted 48 hours after 20:55, 22 June 2010 (UTC) per speedy deletion criterion F7. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -MBK004 20:55, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Request for help[edit]

{{adminhelp}} You didn't put a question. Mr. R00t Talk 21:32, 23 June 2010 (UTC) {{adminhelp}}[[ How can I fix this issue??? I was asked to update this file, and the images are copyright free.]][reply]

Could we have a file name please? Mr. R00t Talk 21:38, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

File:Parazynski.jpg

I have been given permission to update the old image with the new one... parazynski.jpg NASA originally took the photo, I have stated that. I'm new to this wikipedia and am having trouble understanding how to fix this...

Since there is now a licensing tag, I've removed the "di" tag. But as there is an identical copy on the Wikimedia Commons, I'm going to flag the local version for deletion. Don't worry though, as the version on the Commons can still be used as normal on Wikipedia.
P.S. In the future, you should use {{helpme}} for help requests instead of {{adminhelp}} unless you specifically need an admin. This issue doesn't require an admin, and using the normal template will get you helped much quicker. Robert Skyhawk (T C B) 21:47, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

{{helpme}} THank you for you help Robert. I am still unclear how to update the old picture scott_parazynski.png with the new picture parazynski.jpg The file that is in the commons appears on multiple pages and I would like to be able to update or replace that image with the parazynski.jpg new image so it appears in all the pages that link to it.

Also how do I add source info or tag images I upload to avoid this in the future. There are other copyright free images I need to add to the page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Parazynski immediately and they are not showing up because it says I need to verify sources. I also need the top of the page to NOT display the following.. "This article includes a list of references or external links, but its sources remain unclear because it has insufficient inline citations. Please help to improve this article by introducing more precise citations where appropriate."

I have been on here all day and read every instruction I can find and have had no luck. I am new to this, please help.

Thanks

I'm not sure which question(s)... Anyway, I'll answer what I think needs answering.
  • If there is a Commons picture then any Wikipedia will pick it up with a normal link, so when the version on English Wikipedia gets deleted, then the system will use the Commons picture. This is done so all Wikipedia's can use the picture, and reduces the need to store the same picture for every Wikipedia.
  • If you want to update the Commons picture then you will have to log into Commons, and upload it there. - You can use your existing username, it gets a bit more tricky (long time since I did it) - see WP:SUL to start
  • You are lacking a welcome template, with useful links. I'll add one in a minute to the page bottom.
  • The box with ""This article includes a list of references..." has been added by another editor to show that there are not many in-line references - this is what Wikipedia really needs, it shows which part of an article is referenced elsewhere, a long list of references at the bottom is not of much use to verify the data.
  • Adding images is always tricky. Be sure to fill in all the fields on the upload form to show where you got the picture, and how that proves that the image does not infringe any copyright. If you use your own pictures try not to edit them so they lose the EXIF data that the camera adds to them.
Hope that is of some help  Ronhjones  (Talk) 22:31, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

{{helpme}} Thanks Ronhjones, I think I have uploaded a file correctly on the commons page Scott_Parazynski.jpg but how do I get the new portrait image to replace the current old portrait image on the following page? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Parazynski

You mean Scott E. Parazynski. Make links like that, using the syntax [[Scott E. Parazynski]] - see WP:LINKING.
Re. the pic, I've already changed it for you.
You change it by changing the image filename in the infobox template, template:Infobox Astronaut, at the beginning of the article. This bit;
{{Infobox Astronaut
| name =Scott Edward Parazynski, MD
| image =Scott parazynski.jpg
...
The older filename was with a capital 'P' and thus, a different file.
The old pic was File:Scott Parazynski.jpg.
The new one is File:Scott parazynski.jpg
You can see my edit here.
For more help, you can either;
  • Leave a message on my own talk page; OR
  • Use a {{helpme}} - please create a new section at the end of your own talk page, put {{helpme}}, and ask your question - remember to 'sign' your name by putting ~~~~ at the end; OR
  • Talk to us live, with this or this.
The last of those is particularly useful - please try it; pop in now and say hello. Chzz  ►  23:33, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. Note, please put new messages at the end of this talk page! Thanks.  Chzz  ►  23:34, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Help re. permissions[edit]

Note: I moved this 'help' request to the end of this page, and re-factored it a bit, for clarity.  Chzz  ►  22:18, 28 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

{{helpme}} Any help would be appreciated. I'm still having trouble understanding how to source these files. The file File:Everestpatch.jpg was a logo that was self generated by the person who I am uploading it for. It has no copyright. What do I need to do to get the errors to stop displaying so I can successfully post this image to a page?

AND File:Everestpatch08.jpg

When you leave messages, please remember to "sign" your name, by putting ~~~~ (four tilde signs) at the end. This will add your name, and the date and time. You can also do this by clicking the 'sign' button, pictured to the right.  Chzz  ►  22:16, 28 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The phrase, self generated by the person who I am uploading it for does not make sense.
We need permission from whoever created the image.
If Scott Parazynski owns the copyright, we need permission from him; perhaps he could email such permission; see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials, especially "You cannot donate what someone else owns".
Perhaps Mr. Parazynski could send permission via email, using the language from the template at WP:CONSENT, to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org ?  Chzz  ►  03:26, 29 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Chzz, you have been most helpful. I will forward the information to Scott. --CThiem 21:47, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
