What I want from FurMe

What I want from the FurMe integration is easy access to templates. I don't mind cutting and pasting them it, so long as I don't have to go finding them.

For the FURs: So you know how when I click on TW's XfD button there is a drop down menu with the different types of deletion? Okay so if I'm on a file page, I'd like to be able to click in the TW menu something that says FUR and will open up a pop up with a drop down. The drop down should have all the most common FURs; {{Non-free use rationale}} (general), {{Album cover fur}} (album), {{Book cover fur}} (book), {{Poster fur}} (movie poster/general poster), {{Logo fur}} (logo), {{tl:Video cover fur}} (video/dvd/blueray), and {{Video game cover fur}} (video games). The drop down should default to general, as all the other ones do is make it easier, but general works for all of them. Really, for me, just having the full text for each of those six available in a pop up box, so I can cut and paste it in myself, is fine for me, however I am more experianced in this than many. If you could recapture the previous functionality of FurMe on furs, adapted so that it uses these six rationales instead of the smaller and obsolete selection it previously used, that would be ideal.

For the Licenses: This one I have a very light request for. Because it's one line of template and everyone knows exactly where to put it, all I really want here is for there to be a drop down menu with the most common free tags, non-free tags, and modifier tags. I will personally make a list for you later on this week. When I pick an entry in the drop down menu, I want it to appear, in brackets, as easily copy and paste-able, text in the pop up.

For me, FurMe is a convenience that saves me the time of having to go fetch temples. I know where all the templates are, but many people don't. For them, it provides much more. I suppose other people will have other requirements. I hope you can get it as close to the original functionality (but with new template lists) as possible, but I will readily adapt to whatever you come up with. To me, FurMe is a benefit, not a right, so I really can't complain much with whatever you do.

Nowadays if you look at an actor's biography, the external links section is filled with several expanded award templates, which take up a lot of space on the article. Instead of having one big template for the awards, I created the sub-sections to show the winners of each period - a similar format to that found on the templates of the Oscars, SAG, Golden Globe, etc. Not only would this further help reduce the size of the templates, it would also help the overall template looks more organized. Lastly, if those awards can have separate templates for each period, I don't see the problem for doing the same thing for the Filmfare Awards. FURME

I appreciate you are busy on getting the existing FURME functionality working in TWINKLE, but would appreciate greatly if in reimplementing some expanded function was provided,

I had a hand in creating the templates currently known as :

which are not currently in FURME and whose inclusion might be useful. However these templates, in my view may of themselves need some kind of overhaul, so that they can pick up the relevant infobox fields more effectivly.

I'd also like to strongly suggest some kind of 'standard' rationale template be developed for :

  • magazine/comic covers as these are not well covered by the existing book cover one.
  • Biographical portraits/Images - as I've seen simmilar wording on a number of these used for infobox uses amongst others.

I couldn't help but notice this discussion while leaving a talkback. If you use Twinkle, you can set custom CSD criteria. This will leave it up to the admin as to which criteria works best. Oops, I made a mistake. While that page was also under G11 (advertising or promotion), WP:NOT is not enough force to generate a speedy deletion. PROD is good for other instances. Either way, it's gone now. Problem solved, eh? Also, apparently the custom rationale isn't for when you cant find another, which contradicts its reason for existing. EDIT: Apparently it means rather that it isn't for when you can't really provide a reason. The description leads one to believe that it isn't really ever to be used. Good point. Now I look back on it, the wording I wrote for the tooltip on the CSD {{db}} tag is indeed ambiguous. What it should say is that {{db}} must not be used simply because you think a page should be deleted, despite there being no applicable CSD criteria. Perhaps "Custom rationale is for use only when you can not apply the other criteria easily to this article, yet it obviously meets deletion requirements" or something like that, mentioning that its only for use when obvious, yet cant apply the standard deletion criteria easily (due to ambiguity). Twinkle question

I've noticed that you are pretty active at Wikipedia talk:Twinkle, so I'll direct my question to you. {{Wikify}} recently had a parameter added to it that allows for more specific directions. However, as much as it is needed, it probably won't catch on unless we get some help from Twinkle and even AWB. How hard would it be to add a dialogue box that pops up every time someone selects {{wikify}} from the "Tag" menu, similar to what happens with {{tl|cleanup))? Ryan Vesey asked here, but that's buried, so I'd like to find out from someone who knows a lot about the subject. Thoughts? Nolelover Talk·Contribs 19:02, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

I have updated the article since the concern was raised. Tegen Roberts is famous in the UK and made it into the major UK newspapers. As a gameshow winner and winner of one of the largest amounts given out at anytime on television in the UK. Also being the largest amount given out on any UK Channel for a non-prime time TV show. she gained considerable attention but the nature of her battle with her condition and overcoming it to then go on and win Deal or No Deal (UK game show) captured the hearts of the British people. The subject of the article is a well known person in the UK since the Deal or No Deal (UK game show) and this follows precedents already set on Wikipedia for notability after winning a game show. Craig Phillips winner of British version of Big Brother and Judith Keppel who won Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? (UK game show). The perception of notability of a person should not be limited by users who are not resident in the terrority where said notability is known and accepted. Both these notable people have share the distinction of winning the top prize in a televised gameshow. And are mentioned in articles for the corresponding gameshow. Twinkle Preferences

Hi, the code for the TW PREFS panel currently contains: 

if ((mw.config.get("wgPageName") === "Wikipedia:Twinkle/Preferences"

But this doesn't work when the code is copied to other wikis(due to localization of namespace). It took me a while to figure out that this was why the prefs panel wasn't working on hi-wp.(I'm not js--savvy.) Wouldn't it be easier for other projects to copy if this was replaced by: 

if (((mw.config.get("wgNamespaceNumber") === 4 && mw.config.get("wgTitle") === "Twinkle/Preferences")

It would make it easier. I'll look into it.
As you have probably realised, Twinkle was unfortunately not written with project cross-compatibility in mind. A lot of other projects have a stale copy of Twinkle sitting around, most of them not working very well... I'm impressed to see that Hindi Wikipedia is taking the initiative to localise Twinkle, and I would appreciate any feedback on the import and localisation effort. — This, that, and the other (talk) 11:31, 19 September 2011 (UTC)
Thank you from the hindi wikipedia for the compliment. However, you are right. Twinkle isn't written with cross-project compatibility in mind. There are stale copies of twinkle. Even the effort on hi is so far limited to UI and template translation only. No changes in code or module have taken place since AzaToth put version v2.0-17-ga2cdabc(3 june 2011) on hi. Although I have been planning to update it once the translation is complete, the biggest challenge that I(and probably others in similar situations) face is not knowing which updates to apply(as in which are en specific, and which aren't).
I'd be more than happy in providing feedback(detailed or brief, as you like). I've also been thinking that if developers here were interested, it shouldn't be tough in making a cross-project version of twinkle(I may be horribly wrong in this). I think I have some ideas for it, but not the coding skills. We can talk more about it if people are interested in making such a version of TW.--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 12:52, 20 September 2011 (UTC)

Thanks very much! Amalthea and AzaToth seem to be semi-active at the moment, so it will be good to have another willing party to do this.
Note that Amalthea modifies the edit summary used by the Python script whenever he syncs the gadget, so that it mentions all the changes that were made to the repo since the last sync (within 255 characters, of course). See the gadget file history.
Is there any chance you could help me out with two things: (1) synchronise the gadget file again; and (2) take a look at User talk:Amalthea#No, not the repo this time.., which is a request related to Twinkle? — This, that, and the other (talk) 07:39, 22 September 2011 (UTC)

Burma templates

The best thing would be to get the township templates all dabbed and then start some of the most notable settlements and hide the other red links. There is nothing wrong with a few red links but I agree that many is exccessive. The best thing is to do what I have done with the template you placed at AFD right now. If you help with the dabbing of all of the templates I'll then hide the red links so the templates only have the existing articles in them.♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:58, 28 September 2011 (UTC)

I am now faced with the situation where attribution for articles by J. W. Clarke have been changed to John Willis Clark. Of course this would have been trivial with the templates in place. Perhaps you would undertake the change. Rich Farmbrough, 23:21, 9 October 2011 (UTC).

Yes: some sort of error appears to have been made when the templates were substituted, as is evident here. I'm assuming John Willis Clark did not in fact sign under three differnt sets of initials? I suggest you instead contact Plastikspork or SchuminWeb, as I don't know what exact process was undertaken to achieve the substitution. Well, lets try this. You create a test page in your userspace, and when I get home (if its created before I get home), I'll try tagging it for G6, to see if it'll still notify you on my end. If it doesn't, shall I try tagging for U2, U3, and all G csd criteria g5 to g9? Just to see if they will all try to notify.
If it does, we could try creating an anchor template that will auto-include the ifexist function and the subst for {{db-csd-notice-custom}} and the four tildes. Then we could try removing the four tildes from the message that it would use, and remapping the template it uses to the anchor template. (probably need to reword this to make it understandable)

Twinkle suggestions

Hi. I don't want to clutter the Twinkle talk page with this because (for the moment) I think its best to let the bug reports have priority there, so I hope you don't mind me making some suggestions here. The new Twinkle interface is a massive improvement over what it used to be, but there have been comments that the lists of uw templates in the Twinkle dropdown are too long now to permit an easy overview and a quick choice. This isn't a problem with Twinkle, it's a problem of people who write new templates and ask you to add them to Twinkle. I've already mentioned somewhere that I now actually find it quicker to type custom messages or paste ones I made myself rather than hunt through the list at Twinkle.

A very quick remedy would be to provide mouseover tooltips previews of the templates. You went halfway with the new Twinkle interface by offering a 'preview' button, which is a very useful addition, but it's not quite the same as a shortcut for choosing the template, it's more useful for previewing any manually typed additions to the template before it's finally posted.

Another additional quick solution would be to offer a feature in Twinkle prefs for users to customise their Twinkle lists.

Steve is currently running experiments with templates, including some stats about their use, but I feel again that this is an issue that should also take note of empirical reports; for example, I'm an extremely busy editor and use Twinkle a lot, but there are a great many uw that I have never had occasion to use. I might go through them all, and make a list of the ones I believe to be superfluous and/or redundant at least to to Twinkle.

Your thoughts on these suggestions would help towards the development of the completely new control panel for new page patrollers. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 02:17, 26 October 2011 (UTC)

Hmmm... what's this NPP panel? Sounds interesting.
I totally agree that twinklewarn needs an overhaul. My first idea was to add subheadings in the dropdown list of templates (uw-vandalismX and uw-disrputiveX at the top, and the rest under headings like "Behavior in articles", "Files and uploads", etc.) This would be a first step to improving the process of choice, as I did when overhauling the Tag module. I also had an idea to replace the top dropdown (General note, Warning, etc.) with a row of toggle-buttons with a modern look. The challenge in all of these proposed renovations is to improve the experience for all users without hindering the workflow of experienced users (i.e. a "wizard" would not be introduced, because it adds too many clicks to the process - indeed, Microsoft isn't so keen on wizards anymore, probably for this reason).
Unfortunately, pop-up preview is a bit difficult to implement (not impossible, just very difficult!) - I would welcome any other suggestions. — This, that, and the other (talk) 04:13, 26 October 2011 (UTC)
Well, I use tooltips easily enough on sites I build, but there may be stuff about the Twinkle code I don't know about. How about making it possible for users to set their Twinkle prefs for the ones they want displayed? One feature that I very much appreciated was the new ability you made for users to include their own custom templates - I use that a lot, so making a pref list shouldn't be too hard to code up. You could start, for example by offering a default list of the most common ones, and let them select others to add to it. I'd make that default list for you , if it helps. In the early start of such a system there would of course be complaints from two out of a million users who can't find the obscure template that only they use, but I think we're used to that ;) Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 10:49, 26 October 2011 (UTC)

Closing at Tfd

I saw you closed some discussions at Tfd. I don't know whether you do this regularly of late, but you should really not close discussions before the end of the mandatory week for discussion. Especially if there have been only two comments, as in those cases I saw. (November 22)

On a related note. Redirecting is a very (read: too) simple solution. Would be better to replace the instances and then redirect (or delete).

It's not usual for me to close TFD discussions. There were two reasons for my closure:
  1. I would have boldly redirected these templates without going to TFD, had I cone across them in my travels (or had I been the nominator of the TFD);
  2. There was no opposition to the idea of redirection, and I could not think of a plausible reason not to make this choice.

Articles for creation/Chief Architect Software - A7 Speedy Deletion

Hello TTO, I wanted to get in contact with you regarding the latest review you provided for a page I created - Chief Architect Software. The article has been rejected several times - each time I've gone back through and tried to remedy the reviewer's issue with the article. I think I've done as well as I can. However, I just don't understand the A7 rejection. In the world of 3D CAD software, Chief Architect has a relevant presence. There are numerous other articles about other CAD programs that have been allowed to be created. Those other articles are poorly written (in some cases), some have no references, one page consists of nothing but a link. Yet these other pages have been allowed to be created. Here are 3 examples of CAD software pages that have been allowed for creation:

The Chief Architect page I create has much more content and citations than any of the above. Forgive me, I'm just frustrated at the Wikipedia process that allows these bare bones articles to be created but rejects mine when it has significant content and references. You raise a good point. I agree that your page is better than those articles you mention. But those articles were never "accepted", people went ahead and created them directly in the main article-space. CAD software has become paramount in the field of design. Professionals don't spend forever drawing things out by hand anymore - they use software. There are numerous software packages out there aiding in that endeavor and are significant in their effect on the design field - Chief Architect is one of them. The other software pages I cited have not been done well - given the chance, the Chief Architect page will be (and perhaps more on the topic of CAD software). I still do not agree with your nomination for an A7 deletion for Chief Architect Software. That is what you need to allow the article to be accepted. For the Common Good questions

Hello This, that and the other, when logging into your tool, it prompts for a username and password and mentions that it will be saved to disk. It saves the login info in the same folder as the program is saved, to a file called "ForTheCommonGood.cfg" (so long as you run the program by double-clicking its icon - if you open it from a web browser after downloading it, who knows where it will end up). Very easy to delete if you wish to do so (although FtCG will recreate it again the next time you run it and enter your credentials).

It's also important to realize that indefinite protection isn't permanent protection; except in a few rare really severe cases, the protection will always be taken back off within a couple of months anyway. I don't own the repository: AzaToth does, so you'll have to ask him. He's rarely active on enwiki these days, and I haven't heard from him on IRC for a while, so your best bet for contacting him would probably be by e-mail or a github message.

You've essentially become the project lead. If it's possible to share repository ownership, you should ask AzaToth to share it with you. AFAICS there is no way of sharing repository ownership on github. If AzaToth ever goes away altogether, I would probably fork the repository (so I have ownership of a copy) and then use my fork as the central repo. Magic spell

You proposed Wikipedia:Magic spell to deal with "unpatrollable" pages for deletion as redundant. But as far as I can see, the bug still exists.
