New Page Triage engagement strategy released

Hey guys!

I'm dropping you a note because you filled out the New Page Patrol survey, and indicated you'd be interested in being contacted about follow-up work. This is to notify you that we've finally released both the initial documentation about the project and also the engagement strategy, which sets out how we plan to work with the community on this. Your self redirects

Hi there. I'm responding to a request to fix some of the odd double redirects on WP:AN, and noticed that you've got some double redirects in your own userspace. This unnecessarily confuses the bot scripts, so I would like to delete the following pages:

The English Wikipedia should not be a testing ground for redirects, that's why we have test.wikipedia.org - please feel free to create your redirects here. Please confirm that you are okay with the deletion of these pages. Thanks, The Helpful One 12:52, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

If you want to keep these pages, policy says that you may; WP:UP permits userspace testing and does not prohibit any redirect in userspace, except of your main talk page. Nyttend backup (talk) 13:27, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

I, too, am a fan of Chael Sonnen. Regardless, you have no business falsifying a Wikipedia entry. That sort of stealth vandalism is a break of faith with the user base and it undercuts the reputation of the wiki. As it happens I was reverting some edits which made the article appear totally broken. Since the same editor that removed Chael Sonnen also broke the article display completely, I reverted the edit in its entirety. I appreciate that someone more knowledge about the topic has repaired the article. TTOBot Questions

Please don't use the masstag.js script. I have approval from BAG to run it under the TTObot account only, and only for a narrow scope (see User:TTObot). If you have a request for TFD, please ask me. Berlin hackathon invitation

Hi! I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon, 1-3 June. Registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, then please register by May 1st and mention it in the registration form.

This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, teaching, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.

We want to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!

I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

Speedy deletion, not AfD

Hello. It is always a good idea to talk things over with the authors before starting an AfD. If you had told me about your modification of {{W-screen}} first, I could have saved you some trouble by requesting speedy deletion myself. RockMagnetist (talk) 02:33, 6 April 2012 (UTC)

It may be a good idea in theory, but in practice it is quicker to nominate for XfD rather than waiting for a response from the creator. I don't use the watchlist, so I keep discussions open in separate tabs, which I try to minimise. Sorry if it seems discourteous; that is not intended at all. It is a matter of efficiency.

Time Charter and Time charter

Thanks for your input. My problem was that Time charter redirects to an article about Shipping rather than the racehorse Time Charter. Can you suggest a solution? Multiple params in templates for TW

Junk left around after testing that others then tripped over

Siphonandra

I'd say in this area common sense demands that names in current use at whatever level is deemed notable (and for plants, I think it's agree that every genus is) are not redirect anywhere. Synonyms can get redirected if they are notable enough. I suspect there are too many homonyms and near homonym to make systematic redirection all that useful (besides not all of them qualifies as "Alternative names" worthy of making redirects for anyway!). Plus what happens if (when?) Siphonandra Klotzsch is conserved?

If you really insist on putting something at Siphonandra, it should be a disambiguation page. Personally I'd rather leave it as a redlink in the meantime, hence why I just deleted the redirect (which is what I usually do when I find such inappropriate redirect, though homonymy is not usually involved). Well, you actually blanked the redirect, rather than deleting it. The difference is fairly significant: see the guideline on page blanking - only the first few sentences are relevant in this case.
If you like, you could send the redirect to redirects for deletion, but it may be easier just to create the disambiguation page. I might leave that to you, since I know little about taxonomy.

Hey, I'm back :)

Did you get time to look into why the portlet code works only on console invocation? (In case you've forgotten, the twaddportlet and twaddportletlink code work when invoked through the console, but the same code doesn't work in the script itself.)

I've updated TWG per the morebits object update, but that didn't solve the issue either.

Feedback on CP/template testing

Thanks so much for your feedback/suggestions! I'm at Wikimania right now, but I'm getting really excited about tackling this overhaul once I get back to the office.

Btw, Steven and I just gave a talk on template testing and got a lot of positive feedback on the project, so it looks like we're on the right track. Based on the outcome of our RfC on level one user warnings, we'll think about AfD and PROD changes, too. As for CSD, we're working with the NewPages Feed team to make new speedy templates for the curation toolbar that are in line with our testing findings (i.e., short and to the point!). If those turn out to work better, maybe they can make their way into Twinkle :)

Re [restore this version], I honestly have no idea what is going wrong. When a diff page next loads without the link, open your JavaScript console (by pressing Ctrl+Shift+K in Firefox), and type
Twinkle.fluff.init();

It's not that the diff links don't appear (it's not just [restore], the rollback links don't function properly either); it's that when I click on them, all that happens is that a # is added onto the end of the URL. When I add Twinkle.fluff.init(); to my Error Console, a second set of working links appear above the non-working ones. However, whenever I want to use the links, I manually have to add Twinkle.fluff.init(); again. My configuration: Vector, Safari 5.1.7, OS X 10.6.8, MacBook Air. I suspect you may have a script conflict, since you have so many scripts in your common.js file! Try disabling all other gadgets and removing all other user scripts from your common.js (keeping Twinkle enabled), and see if the problem is fixed. Oh, I just don't like redirects from all lowercase. The software knows enough to make the Go button work without them, and having them appear as blue links makes one more unprintworthy redirect to worry about folks linking to. I'm not about to go on a RfD nomination binge or anything, but since it was my mistake this time, I thought I would just have it tidied up via G7. Please try and be a bit more constructive in your edits. The page was linking people to an older footballer which shouldn't have been the case. Due to time restrictions, I blanked the page. I might point out that when a redirect is blanked, and no reason is given in the edit summary, it is hard to know what to do. Often, to ensure that the page remains useful for our readers, it may be best to simply revert the edit and restore the redirect. Had I myself had more time, I would have asked about your intentions on your talk page.
I would suggest that in future, you should avoid blanking pages - either edit them to fix any problems they may have, or tag them for deletion. — This, that, and the other (talk) 07:49, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

can you 'fix' this template?

It looks like User: Abou Ben Adhem is long-gone, and I noticed that last year you tried to contact him about a TFD on his templates from 2006. Basically, what I need done is on the article Alans, under Timeline, the translated-from-the-Russian term "Forecaucasus" changed to the common English term "Ciscaucasus." FurMe is really badly broken. I have been very busy this year, and although I do have a development copy sitting around on my hard drive, it is nowhere near finished.
What you should do to (try to) get the old version working is to place this line before your import of FurMe:

FtCG question

No it isn't; however, you can actually have more than one "instance" of FtCG open at once! Just double-click on the FtCG icon a second time, and a second instance of FtCG will open. While one instance is busy transferring, you can prepare your next transfer in the other instance. As in, to preview the Commons wikitext? I was working on an in-browser, JavaScript-based version of FtCG a while ago which implemented such a feature, but development was held up by a problem with Wikimedia server configuration. (That version would only have been usable by Commons admins anyway.)
There are a few problems implementing such a thing in desktop FtCG, but I could probably get around them fairly easily: the thing is, I have never found it necessary to preview the Commons wikitext before transfer. Sometimes I need to change things on-wiki afterwards, but I can live with that. What is your specific use-case for a preview feature? — This, that, and the other (talk) 09:10, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

As far as I can see, the feature we want hasn't actually been coded into MediaWiki yet, so the shell group is a bit powerless here. There is a general throttle available (each IP address can create only 6 accounts per hour or something along those lines) but not what we want. I have created Special:AbuseFilter/527 in logging-only mode (no throttling enabled), and marked it private for the moment (the logs probably should be private). I have also granted you the 'Edit Filter managers', so you can see how it works. I looked through the user creation log for the last few days and found Kendrajzurn (talk · contribs), who recently created three accounts: you can test the filter with that username. Great, thanks NW. If I understand this correctly, ..
a) the throttle 'ip' setting is working. In some instances, a user creates other accounts while logged in (e.g. Kendrajzurn). In other cases, a person logs out and then creates other accounts. (i.e. N......panocha in the edit filter log and in NW's block log) This edit filter is catching the extra accounts created on the same IP while logged out (if two are created within a day).
b) the fact that we cant see the other accounts of that vandal via the abusefilter interface means that abusefilter isnt leaking private information. If it did show us the other accounts in the latter case of N......panocha, it would mean that the abusefilter interface is linking accounts based on IP, which is almost leaking the underlying IP. This is good news - I think it means that we could make this edit filter public, as it doesnt bleed extra information. But the bad news is that OTT is right; only checkusers can respond to this type of account creation abuse.
There are another six cases of the IP-created accounts in the edit filter log, so it looks like the majority of the hits will require checkuser investigation and intervention, especially while we are trying to gauge whether this edit filter has an acceptable level of false positives.
Special:AbuseLog/8168342 is a little strange, as the account listed doesn't exist - I am guessing that means they tried to create an account, but the attempt was rejected by an IP auto-block. That is a presentation bug. John Vandenberg (chat) 01:13, 29 January 2013 (UTC)

You misunderstood the edit, given that edit summary. You didn't change it back but actually kept in the heart of my edit, and I have no problem with [most of] your edit because it retained that crucial change – which is exquisitely one of substance. It said before, alone, that "draft article submissions to Wikipedia, created via the Article Wizard and subsequently "declined", are considered...", not even mentioning articles for creation. What you seem to be missing is that many articles created through the wizard are not submitted through AFC and people who do not go through the Wizard but start at AFC may be quite unaware they were redirected from AFC to the Wizard when they clicked "Create an article now!". Accordingly, talking about AFC and leaving out the wizard does no great harm, as G13 does, though I do think the wizard should be mentioned on this explanation page. Focusing on the article wizard and leaving out AFC entirely, on the other hand, as you did, is a clear error of focus and information, sure to mislead and confuse the intended readers of the page, many of whom will be scratching their heads having never heard of the wizard, and who will also be reading a criterion in conjunction that talks only about AFC and not the wizard. Also, anyone who submitted an article through the wizard that did not choose the AFC option for creation and found that page would think it applied to them when it does not. And even if none of this was true, your edit summary would be a bit gratuitous.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 21:35, 10 April 2013 (UTC)

Sorry – I realised soon after making the edit that it wasn't the most sensible edit summary I could have used. The thing is, I get frustrated when users expand text destined for newbies (such as notification templates, etc) with tonnes of conditions, exceptions, subordinate clauses and excessive verbiage, just to make it absolutely correct in all possible circumstances. By all means, the exceptions and other technicalities can certainly be written up in the policies, but we don't need to fill our newbie-facing material with "small print" that's not small at all.
Newbies (aside from the tiny minority that are on their way to becoming long-term editors) are simply not going to know the difference between WIZ and AFC, and they won't reach REFUND/G13 from a page outside AFC-space. Not all Wikipedia editors spend a lot of time getting to know our various processes, as we have done... most just come by to do a bit of casual editing, or perhaps article creation, without taking much notice of the exact processes being used. In my view, the KISS principle is one of the keys to editor retention.
I might also point out that your statement "this language made G13 cover all those to which it does not apply" is not totally accurate either, because REFUND/G13 is not a policy at all.
Having said all that, I think we've reached a compromise, and I hope you agree that REFUND/G13 is now better than it first was, now that you have run your eyes over it. Hopefully G13 turns out to be an efficient and uncontroversial way of keeping AFC-space clean. — This, that and the other (talk) 03:34, 11 April 2013 (UTC)

I read the discussion here about the decision to remove "identified as vandalism" from the edit summary when using the vandalism rollback option in Twinkle. Template:Db-afc-notice

This useful template refers to the article concerned by its title only, without the "Wikipedia:Articles for creation" bit, both in the header and in the body. This can cause confusion - see User talk:Jmont1 for the situation where the actual article exists, but so did the AfC submission; when the AfC submission was nominated for G13, the notice caused the user to come rushing to REFUND thinking that the article had been deleted. That's an interesting point. The trouble is, the full title of the submission can itself be confusing, because of the inclusion of the nonsensical "Wikipedia talk" string. You seem to be the voice of Twinkle on the bugs/comments/questions page, so I figured it was appropriate to ping you for an answer there. AzaToth has responded to a couple things too there recently, but unfortunately there isn't a template that allows a user to ping multiple people and have just one word show (and that statement has inspired me to test something in my sandbox to see if links to users work inside of a display: none; or display: hidden; span). I'm assuming that Twinkle doesn't check the content of the edits in the last 24 hours for such warnings because it would be too expensive? That is what I would expect anyways. I already corrected/removed in on GameFAQs. In fact that game was published by Culture Brain. "Micro Academy" probably exists but it has nothing to do with video games (Culture Brain) in this case. Most definitely not! Actually, if I can ask a wee favour; would you mind, at our explicit request, hammering the crap out of a feature? :D. Basically, the reference-adding is still something that most people aren't using (I'm not sure if anyone has noticed it's there). I'd be most obliged, if you have some free time, if you could spend it trying out the reference editor in all sorts of ways - kicking it until it breaks, and then telling us what you did to make it break. @JamesBWatson: I made that comment just to get the editor out of the sandbox. It's totally fine for them to use a page of their own on testwiki for testing purposes (and I am pretty open-minded as to what I consider "testing"), but if they were to start using testwiki as a webhost, I would just block them (I am an admin over there). — This, that and the other (talk) 10:48, 9 July 2013 (UTC)

TTO, I created ( I think) the Med Flory page after seeing him credited in an episode of Perry Mason. According to the IMDb website, he appeared in 2 Perry Mason episodes and that's all I know about him. The reason I actually tagged the page for speedy deletion was that it was showing up in Special:DoubleRedirects as a redirect to itself. It turned out that there was some extra hidden content after the redirect, but it still seemed worthy of speedy deletion (I initially thought A3, but as Dlohcierekim mentions, A7 would have been more appropriate).
@PerrysFan: Maybe Med Flory is notable, but that is not something I am prepared to judge. If you think he qualifies as a notable actor, then you are welcome to create a proper article for him: consider using the article wizard for some guidance. — This, that and the other (talk) 00:20, 26 August 2013 (UTC)

Article Feedback Tool update

Hey This, that and the other. I'm contacting you because you're involved in the Article Feedback Tool in some way, either as a previous newsletter recipient or as an active user of the system. As you might have heard, a user recently anonymously disabled the feedback tool on 2,000 pages. We were unable to track or prevent this due to the lack of logging feature in AFT5. We're deeply sorry for this, as we know that quite a few users found the software very useful, and were using it on their articles.

We've now re-released the software, with the addition of a logging feature and restrictions on the ability to disable. Obviously, we're not going to automatically re-enable it on each article—we don't want to create a situation where it was enabled by users who have now moved on, and feedback would sit there unattended—but if you're interested in enabling it for your articles, it's pretty simple to do. Just go to the article you want to enable it on, click the "request feedback" link in the toolbox in the sidebar, and AFT5 will be enabled for that article.

Thanks for uploading File:Image page sandbox.png. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.
