Hi, I see that you just added a non-existing cat. You are not improving this article. I edited it very carefully and I thin k it is you who needs to discuss these drastic chnages that are against policy. There are a lot of things that Wikipedia is not. One of them is that it is not intended to be a users manual for anything, not even PubMed. The huge amount of explanation on how to use Boolean operators and such do not belong here and have to be deleted again. Thanks. --Crusio (talk) 09:08, 17 March 2011 (UTC)

Hi. Please discuss these changes on the discussion page of this article. Thank you. PS: I have since removed the non-existent cat (I didn't realize that it no longer existed). --Thorwald (talk) 09:15, 17 March 2011 (UTC)
  • Please let me now whether you intend to comment on the further remarks that I made on the talk page there. Thanks. --Crusio (talk) 09:44, 19 March 2011 (UTC)

Hello, I hope this is the right place to put this message - I'm new to Wikipedia cooperative editing. In any case -

Dear Thorwald, I have seen you took some interest in the Debye-Waller factor article. About a month ago I thoroughly corrected and expanded it; still, I have identified major problems with it that I didn't manage to resolve myself (I'm not an expert in the topic) - they are described in its discussion page. Can you take a look at the matter? Or can you post the issue in some proper Wikipedia place (I don't know where and how)? Thanks, and sorry if this kind of message is improper, Schreib70. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Schreib70 (talkcontribs) 15:32, 27 March 2011 (UTC)

Hi Thorwald, where did you find Emilia's date of birth? Please answer here. Bye! --Maz-El (talk) 14:22, 21 April 2011 (UTC)

  • I just updated the article and added a reference to her year of birth. The source was here. --Thorwald (talk) 20:12, 21 April 2011 (UTC)
I read that article, it does not say that Emilia was born in 1988, but only that she's 23. Maybe she was born in 1987! --Maz-El (talk) 20:34, 21 April 2011 (UTC)

Source for Tycho Brahe quotation

Do you recall the source from which you obtained the quotation you added to the article Tycho Brahe with this edit? Until yesterday, a request for a citation had been open for more than two years. All the sources I have been able to find are tertiary sources which post-date the addition of the quotation to Wikipedia, and either cite Wikipedia as their source or provide no source whatever. This also applies to the source which another editor has recently provided but regards—correctly, in my opinion—as unsatisfactory. Thank you for any assistance you might be able to give.
David Wilson (talk · cont) 14:12, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

  • Yes. I took the quote directly from a book I used to own (I have since donated it to a local library). You can find this quote in just about any book about Tycho. Here is one example. Hope that helps. --Thorwald (talk) 00:10, 6 January 2012 (UTC)
  • Oh. I didn't see the note for the reference on the Tycho Brahe article. I actually don't agree with that note. Again, this quote by Tycho is found in just about _any_ book relating to Tycho and/or his work. Here is another example. I can go down to my local library and pick up any book on Tycho and find this quote. --Thorwald (talk) 00:14, 6 January 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for your reply, and for going to the trouble of looking up other references. I'm sorry I didn't make it clearer that I had in fact already done extensive google, google book, and google scholar searches for material containing the quotation, and so was already aware of both the books you have given links for. The problem with them, as I noted in my original query, is that they're tertiary sources which provide no information whatever about their own sources for the quotation (although Nardo's book does at least contain a bibliography). I don't consider such sources reliable for such details, and especially not for details which, as in this case, cannot be found in several of the most authoritative scholarly secondary sources, such as Dreyer's Tycho Brahe, Thoren's The Lord of Uraniborg, Christianson's On Tycho's Island, Christianson's Tycho Brahe and Prague or Mosley's Bearing the Heavens.
I can confirm from reliable sources—such as those for which I have just given links—that the quotation does accurately depict Tycho's attitudes and activities in 1563, and could well be something that he might have said. However, there are very good reasons for doubting that anything like it occurs in what little of his writings have survived from that period. I very much suspect that if the quotation could be tracked back to a primary origin it will be found to have suffered some distortiion from Chinese whispers, and had an incorrect date assigned to it. The primary source commonly cited by scholars as documenting Tycho's activities and attitudes during the period in question are his recollections published some 35 years later in Astronomiæ instauratæ mechanica. Here is a case in point with some extracts translated into English.
Can you remember the title of the book you obtained the quotation from, or the name of it's author? It might provide another source, and that would make it worth my while trying to track down a copy.

Repost of Laura Ramsey

A tag has been placed on Laura Ramsey requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia, because it appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion process. If you can indicate how it is different from the previously posted material, contest the deletion by clicking on the button that looks like this: which appears inside of the speedy deletion () tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate). Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's discussion directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Administrators will consider your reasoning before deciding what to do with the page. If you believe the original discussion was unjustified, please contact the administrator who deleted the page or use deletion review instead of recreating the page. Thank you. Programming, open source, & Wikipedia

Hello! I noticed from your edits and userpage that you're interested in programming. I thought you might want to know that the Wikimedia open source community welcomes you to get developer access so you can contribute code, critique others' commits, and generally get a better sense of how this place works on a technical level.

Also, the Wikimedia Foundation is hiring programmers, in case you know anyone who's looking. Remote work is often feasible.

Logical quotes

The full-sentence quote changes in [1] and [2] don't seem to conform to MOS:LQ (example 1 specifically). —Mrwojo (talk) 19:06, 8 January 2013 (UTC)

  • Maybe. However, two things: (1) It must be known (i.e., proven in the original reference) that the full stop did, indeed, occur where said quote places it; and (2) In strict logical punctuation, the full stop is always outside of the quotes. --Thorwald (talk) 22:07, 8 January 2013 (UTC)

CRID

Hello User:Thorwald, I think that the two technical specifications "ETSI TS 102 822-2 V1.4.1 (2007-11)" and "ETSI TS 102 822-4 V1.7.1 (2012-12)" should be cited in the "References" section of the CRID article. From my point of view, these two ETSI standards are even more important than RFC 4078 which is only an "informational" RFC. -- 2A00:1398:4:0:1845:B86C:EF41:ECC8 (talk) 19:48, 31 January 2013 (UTC)

Help Please

Hello-I need some help please with your edits to the H-antigen group. I left some of my questions on the article talk page-ty24.0.133.234 (talk) 14:37, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

I undid it and the self-published link is still there but I added more info. and a news-source link. Let me know if you think that is sufficient please?24.0.133.234 (talk) 14:45, 16 February 2013 (UTC) And the info. that is self-pub. is self published by the group and i put it there as a reference to the controversy not the group so I thought it would be OK to clarify it is not published by myself but by the group and they have been very active on Twitter FB and news, but I did not want to add Twitter as a ref.24.0.133.234 (talk) 14:48, 16 February 2013 (UTC)?

OK-so can you give me a better clue? Should I put the "controversy" in with the cultural section? That actually was my 1st instinct, but everything in that category, (so far) looked to be fictional. That is why I started the new section. A news source should be OK for that (cultural) section? (the source that you deleted was a news site unrelated to the person involved with the controversy). I'm just assuming that you're trying to say that sourcing for a science article s/b a medical journal or something scientific within medical article guidelines, so yes I see where it does not fit in except for cultural.24.0.133.234 (talk) 00:39, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

Please reinstate all previous deletions referring to Professor Thomas Borody and his work on the fecal bacteriotherapy page. His entire history has been removed from the page, despite being the modern day champion of fecal bacteriotherapy, having performed the procedure for the past 20 years, long before its recent acceptance into the medical community. He has also been one of the main contributors to this page for many years, and his acknowledgement is therefore respectful. "We don't do that here" I was given a link to Wikipedia:Neutral POV so I suppose that's the problem. I'm confused now because Audacity website says software is avaliable on GNU/Linux. I'm avare of the controversy about the naming of Linux vs GNU/Linux so I will refrain from such edits.

File permission problem with File:Genome sequencing costs, May 2012.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Genome sequencing costs, May 2012.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add OTRS pending to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as non-free fair use or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. The article Arusha Project has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Passing mention of this project in one book; six scholarly papers cite a reference to the original paper on this. Now a defunct project and doesn't seem to have made a lasting impact on the world.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. María Belón Alvárez ?

Hello. On 14 Jan 2013 at 07:56, you added the following:
| birth_name = María Belón Alvárez
to the María Belón Infobox here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mar%C3%ADa_Bel%C3%B3n
That her birth surname was Alvárez (but is now Belón), and that her husband's surname is also Alvárez seems way too much of a coincidence. Open vSwitch article

Hello! Regarding your edit on the Open vSwitch article, Oxford/serial comma isn't mandatory by any means, and the sentence structure in this case doesn't require additional commas for clarity. Hope you agree. — Dsimic (talk | contribs) 21:05, 18 June 2015 (UTC)

  • I do not agree. The clarification is needed. For an example, in "...including NetFlow, sFlow, SPAN, RSPAN, CLI, LACP and 802.1ag", are "LACP" and "802.1ag" both interfaces, both protocols, or one of the other? The Oxford comma clarifies that they are not necessarily related. A rule-of-thumb on WP (I have been editing over 11 years now) is that the Oxford comma should be used unless there is a really good reason not to use it. --Thorwald (talk) 21:18, 18 June 2015 (UTC)
Please see MOS:SERIAL, which doesn't mandate serial comma at all, and suggests its use only when clarifying ambiguous sentences. As I've said above, in this case there's next to no potential for ambiguity as all of the sentences you've edited are written clearly with plain lists. Let's analyze your example a bit furher, here's the complete sentence:
As a software implementation of a virtual multilayer network switch, Open vSwitch is designed to enable effective network automation through programmatic extensions, while supporting standard management interfaces and protocols, including NetFlow, sFlow, SPAN, RSPAN, CLI, LACP and 802.1ag.
It should be obvious to anyone that the list isn't divided into interfaces and protocols, with or without a serial comma. What could be done to clarify things is a slight recasting of the sentence, though doing that is perhaps totally redundant. — Dsimic (talk | contribs) 21:34, 18 June 2015 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Skagit River, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Ruby Creek. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Nice clean up job! Thanks. One certainly learns a lot really fast in this place. Didn't know that about imdb interop. Cool. Also: I'm thinking now that maybe the titles of previous works should be in italics rather than quotes - aren't quotes a holdover from when all we had were typewriters? • I made those changes and added more information. -- Thorwald (talk) 20:45, 23 October 2016 (UTC)
    • Wundebar! I noticed that I'd linked to Lorenzo the Magnificent - instead of The Elder, so fixed that in both places. Fb2ts (talk) 21:35, 23 October 2016 (UTC)

April 2017

You're at three reverts. There is nothing to discuss. You made a change and, made it seem like it was nothing more than routine formatting when in essence, it was applying serial commas, which are not used in the rest of the article (save "starring Ryan Gosling, and Harrison Ford reprising his role" due to lack of confusion). Walter Görlitz (talk) 05:04, 30 April 2017 (UTC)

  • It is formatting, by definition. There is only one other place in the article that does not use logical punctuation ("...with David Dastmalchian, Hiam Abbass and Lennie James joining in July..."). I missed that one, otherwise I would have made the edit there as well. PS: It is a bit hypocritical of you to accuse me of "edit warring" when you did just as many reverts as I did. And, no. I am not at "three reverts". Only two. As such, I have removed your uncalled for "warning". I have been editing Wikipedia for over 12 years now. I do not need your "warning". --Thorwald (talk) 05:13, 30 April 2017 (UTC)
It is punctuation but definition. So there are four places where it could be applied. One is there to avoid confusion the other three don't need it. Your edit warring is not appropriate. Walter Görlitz (talk) 05:15, 30 April 2017 (UTC)
Nor is your edit warring (again, hypocritical and you have a history of it). Punctuation is formatting, by definition. It is called logical punctuation for a reason (e.g., consider "Alice, Bob and Mary" vs. "Alice, Bob, and Mary" and "John, Mum and Dad" vs. "John, Mum, and Dad". In the first case, are Bob and Mary put forward as a couple, or as a names in a series? The comma clarifies.) --Thorwald (talk) 05:23, 30 April 2017 (UTC)
Agreed. I have a history of reverting people like you. If you insist on being a jerk, go ahead. Walter Görlitz (talk) 05:35, 30 April 2017 (UTC)
Calling me a "jerk" is not appropriate. This is silly. I have better things to do with my time than to argue over commas. --Thorwald (talk) 05:36, 30 April 2017 (UTC)
I'll assume good faith and comment that you missed "with David Dastmalchian, Hiam Abbass and Lennie James". So there was only one (unnecessary) serial comma and you added two more. The article now has none. They're not necessary. I have better things than to correct editors who insist that serial commas are somehow better than keeping them out. Cheers.
