Hi Thryduulf,
Thanks indeed for your wise words. As you said, no-one has made specific comment on Tony Lewis (mathematician). However, if the result of the WP:AfD is Merge, it would then appear no proper process would have been applied to the Tony Lewis article. I will follow your advice, and withdraw the tacked-on AFD, start a new one, prominently link the...
Ooops! There seems to me no particular policy on how to withdraw an AfD, or more probably not one that I can find. Your help needed - again!

Hottest 100 AfDs[edit]

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with your conclusions there, the only two editors who outright advocated deletion were yourself and the nominator. There were also plenty of longstanding Wikipedians who jumped in and said to keep, including former arb Rebecca, and well known users including User:Orderinchaos, User:Canley, User:The-Pope and User:Chuq among others. While there were some SPAs involved, their opinions were valid and if having this article inspires a few new users to register and start contributing, then we're doing well. Essentially, I cannot see any way that a consensus could have been formed at the point where I closed the argument to delete, the very worst that could have happened would be a no-consensus, and that would have had the same effect.

As far as argument on a policy basis goes, I found the argument of User:Joshua_mckinney and User:Canley to be persuasive, and not really adequately refuted. In fact, the whole nomination seems to be hinged on the idea that just because Triple J posted the list on their website, it's copyrighted, which I find a bit disingenous, since the website was clearly not the source of the list.

I hope this addresses your concerns, and I will be happy to answer any followup questions that you might have. Lankiveil (speak to me) 11:18, 12 July 2009 (UTC).[reply]

The Living People section of deletion sorting is currently closed while it's fate is debated here. You continue to mark debates as having been sorted to the LP sort, when they have not given the closure. I would like to ask you to please discontinue these incorrect taggings for now, as they give a false impression of where the debates have actually been listed. - TexasAndroid (talk) 14:58, 12 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You had proposed a merger to The Hindu; there were a couple of other mergers too. I've done the others, but didn't do this one since this will result in the need for a hatnote to the North Cross Railway station (see Talk:The Hindu). It's a distraction on the Hindu article, so I propose taking this to AfD, especially since there isn't any substantial content worth merging, and also the fact that the only content in the article is outdated - NXg is no longer a supplement, it's an online only edition. Double jeopardy at User talk:Nono64[edit]

You blocked Nono64 for continuing to make disputed page moves despite prior blocks, but he made no such moves after his only block for that issue. His last page move was at 14:30, September 20, 2009 and he was last blocked, specifically for that page move, at 20:59, September 21, 2009. He has made no other page moves since that block, so it seems you blocked him a second time for something he already "served his time" for, and he has not shown any repeat behavior at this end. Unless you have some sort of second reason for the block, I think we have a compelling case for an unblock here. Please advise. --Jayron32 20:06, 24 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

M50 dab[edit]

Please note that per the IMOS (current settlement) when it isn't necessary to dab Ireland from NI, policy is to make the pipe read "Ireland". Please do not revert without imforming yourself of the appropriate conventions. Sarah777 (talk) 15:21, 26 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thryduulf, I really hoped that after you had acknowledged that you had wrongly used your admin powers wrt to M18 motorway, that you would exercise some restraint in related issues. That doesn't seem to be the case. :(
You threatened Sarah with a block after you had move-warred with her at M18 motorway, and then protected the page at your preferred location, despite being involved. You were kind enough to apologise to me, but so far as I am aware, you have not apologised to Sarah.
And despite your acknowledgements of having acted wrongly, you are piling in to the substantive debates on M18 etc, without even having the courtesy to lift the page protection which you acknowldge you had applied inappropriately. Each contribution your make there merely underlines how deeply inappropriate it was for you to threaten other editors as you did.
And now you have reverted an edit of Sarah's because you wrongly presumed some things about names of the Irish state, and hadn't informed yourself about the compromises which have been painfully reached to reflect the different approaches to the name of the Irish state. This is ahighly contentious issue where arbcom is heavily involved, and your disregard of the conventions is not a wise idea.
At this point, your pursuit of Sarah is starting to look like harrassment piled onto the abuse of admin powers, and an admin should know better than to do that. Please back off, and concentrate your energies on areas where you are better able to distinguish between your role as an admin and your role as an editor. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 19:03, 26 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Your recent protection of M18 motorway[edit]

This is irrelevant to if you are really "right" or not by trying to keep the page at its stable location; since you are involved in the dispute at hand, it looks really improper for you to protect the page at all. Please, get another administrator to do it to avoid accusations of impropriety. --Rschen7754 (T C) 17:54, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Railway accidents criteria[edit]

The discussion at Talk:List of rail accidents in the United Kingdom#Formal proposal is bringing forward some good suggestions. That discussion is proper to WP:UKRail. The list of level crossing accidents is a worldwide list, so that discussion isn't really that relevant. I'm not going to amend my proposals as other editors have already voted based on what I wrote, but I think it is clear that scenarios not specifically mentioned can be looked at on a case-by-case basis.

Worldwide, what is needed is something similar to WP:AIRCRASH. So, what do you think of drafting a set of criteria for railway accidents - WP:RAILCRASH? Once drafted, this can be posted at WT:TWP so that consensus can be reached as to notability criteria. Mjroots (talk) 08:59, 5 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I just wanted to affirmatively let you know that I've bluelinked this as a redirect to House slave. It is a painfully ugly term (so is "slave"), but this is the historical meaning, and it was actually a redirect to Slavery in the United States prior to being hijacked as an odious attack on the President of the United States. I think it is a plausible redirect that happens to be a terribly offensive term as well, and I don't think the offensiveness is a reason to avoid the term in this case. In any case, I'm letting you know so that you have every opportunity to disagree with me about this; if you don't, you also might consider protecting the redirect so it doesn't become something unsupportable again. Thanks for reading. Gavia immer (talk) 05:47, 7 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Replying to myself here - I've just noticed that List of ethnic slurs lists the derived insult from one African-American to another, which comes from the sense above; I'm not actually certain which is the best target, but it should exist as a redirect to one of the two senses. Gavia immer (talk) 05:53, 7 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
House slave seems a fair target to me. If you aren't sure I suggest you start a discussion on one of the target pages talk pages about it with a link from the other. I'll not protect it right now but it is on my watchlist, and I suggest you watchlist it as well. If it is vandalised then we can revert and protect it (or WP:RFPP it if you aren't an admin). Thryduulf (talk) 10:36, 7 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Personal Attacks[edit]

Two points. (1) I'm not trying to sidestep anything. Another editor asked me to "go away for a bit" because of the "sheer amount I had posted" so I did not want to add to that "sheer amount" if my comment was directed only towards you. You can't win in this place. (2) I fail to see where I have made any personal attacks. Point them out or retract that, please. The Red Hat of Pat Ferrick t 13:58, 13 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I did not say you had made any personal attacks. I said some of your comments were heading in that direction and advised you to be careful that you did not go further. All comments about people are to some degree personal, some more so than others. There is a line beyond which such comments are clearly and undoubtedly personal attacks, you have not (in the comments I have seen) crossed that line. As one approaches the line, there is a grey area in which comments may be interpreted as personal attacks by some people and not by others, depending on such things as how sensitive they are about a certain subject or history of interaction with the person making the comments, etc. Some of your comments are on the edge of this grey area, in my opinion. cfcuk[edit]

Hi

Thank you for your comments regardiong the cfcuk fanzine.

I must say however that I feel that several of the comments made lead me to think that those (including yourself) endorsing the delete also did not read the full AfD debate, prefering to read the reasons for deletion rather than both them and the reasons not to as follows; [[1]]

As I have stated, I feel that I have put valid points forward to 'save' the article from deletion but it seems - judging from the comments that follow, you may not have not fully read the above link. "Endorse. The consensus at the AfD was clear that the lack of significant coverage in reliable sources means that the fanzine does not meet the general notability guidelines. The only apprent claims to notability presented in the AfD were 1. archival at the British Library - as noted, the British Library archive a copy of all publications, regardless of notability. This is not therefore an indicator of whether a publication is notable or not. 2. uniquely low cover price - this claim was not only a very weak (as noted) but it was also refuted. Could not have been closed any other way. Thryduulf (talk) 19:38, 21 February 2010 (UTC)"

List of Homer Simpson's jobs[edit]

You recently closed this RfD discussion as "delete all". However, one of the redirects, List of Homer Simpson's jobs, was a redirect from a merge (see diff), and it appears that this was not noticed by any of the participants in the discussion. Since the edit summary of the edit that carried out the merge did not include the names of the content's authors, the page history of the redirect needs to be kept for proper attribution under the GFDL.

Would you object to undeleting that particular redirect (none of the others contained significant page history, as far as I could tell) on this basis? -- Black Falcon (talk) 01:36, 12 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have no objection, although it would probably be best after undeletion to move this to a different title that is not likely to be nominated again (WP:Merge and delete allows this). I am not going to do this now though as I'm too tired (after several cockups I no longer use my admin tools when I'm not fully awake). Another admin should be happy to do this on request if you point them here so they can see I have no objection. You might also be wise to put a note on the talk page of the RfD. Thryduulf (talk) 03:35, 12 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I undeleted the redirect, noted the action at the RfD (in the section, rather than the talk page, since people might not read the talk page), and documented the merge on the talk pages of the article and redirect. I can't think of a proper alternate name for the redirect, so I've left that for now; the redirect does, however, now indicate that it is a {{R from merge}}, so hopefully that will deter future nominations. Perhaps as an added precaution it could be protected... Thanks, -- Black Falcon (talk) 17:38, 12 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Not sure if you saw this [2] (see last diff paragraph) but I would appreciate it if you acknowledge there that I did ask you if you were willing to see the evidence and that you declined. You will also recall that I told you, in the same email, that I had approached Tsdby Lives, and he too had declined. Therefore I hope you agree that your claim that I did not put up is not true. I also challenge your statement that I was told to "put up or shut up" - can you provide a diff for that? (You haven't provided any diffs at all). Lifeguard[edit]

Re this edit - the normal UK term for this piece of railway hardware is "guard iron". The purpose is to knock small inanimate objects such as stones and branches out of the way; the term "lifeguard" would certainly be a misnomer since any person or animal hit by one of these would be severely injured, if not killed outright. They have been fitted to most British locomotives since at least the 1840s; E.L. Ahrons, in The British Steam Railway Locomotive 1825–1925 (1927) shows them on drawings of most engines from about 1840 on, and on p.39 he states "The following year [1839], W. Hawthorn brought out a "railway engine protector" to clear the rails from obstructions". --Redrose64 (talk) 19:51, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • I'm sure I've seen them referred to as lifeguards in one of the RAIB reports, I'll have a look when I have time. As for the term "lifeguard" I presume that it is designed to guard the life of those on the train, not those hit by them - if you've not be shoved out the way by the obstacle deflector/pilot then I don't think there is any hope for you - lifeguard or not. You could add the "guard iron" term to Wiktionary's wikt:lifeguard entry as a synonym and then as it's noun entry as I don't think it's there already. This arbitration case has been closed and the final decision is available at the link above. The following is a summary of the remedies enacted:

  • Any uninvolved administrator may, in his or her own discretion, impose sanctions on any editor editing Gibraltar or other articles concerning the history, people, or political status of Gibraltar if, after a warning, that editor repeatedly or seriously violates the behavioral standards or editorial processes of Wikipedia in connection with these articles.
  • Discretionary sanctions imposed under the provisions of this decision may be appealed to the imposing administrator, the appropriate administrators' noticeboard (currently the Arbitration Enforcement noticeboard) or the Arbitration Committee.
  • Gibnews (talk · contribs) is topic-banned from editing the Gibraltar article and other articles concerning the history, people, and political status of Gibraltar, broadly construed, for one year. Should Gibnews return to editing relating to Gibraltar following this period, he is reminded to edit in accordance with the principles discussed in this decision and will be subject to the discretionary sanctions remedy should he fail to do so.
  • Gibnews is strongly warned that nationally or ethnically offensive comments are prohibited on Wikipedia and that substantial sanctions, up to a ban from the site, will be imposed without further warning in the event of further violations.
  • Justin A Kuntz (talk · contribs) is topic-banned from editing Gibraltar and other articles concerning the history, people, and political status of Gibraltar, broadly construed, for three months. Should Justin A Kuntz return to editing relating to Gibraltar following this period, he is reminded to edit in accordance with the principles discussed in this decision and will be subject to the discretionary sanctions remedy should he fail to do so.
  • Ecemaml (talk · contribs) is admonished for having, at times, assumed bad faith and edited tendentiously concerning the history and political status of Gibraltar.
  • Editors are reminded that when editing in subject areas of bitter and long-standing real-world conflict, it is all the more important to comply with Wikipedia policies such as assuming good faith of all editors including those on the other side of the real-world dispute, writing with a neutral point of view, remaining civil and avoiding personal attacks, utilizing reliable sources for contentious or disputed assertions, and resorting to dispute resolution where necessary.
  • Any editor who is closely associated with a particular source or website relating to the subject of Gibraltar or any other article is reminded to avoid editing that could be seen as an actual or apparent attempt to promote that source or website or to give it undue weight over other sources or website in an article's references or links. To avoid even the appearance of impropriety, it may be best in these circumstances to mention the existence of the source or website on the talkpage, and allow the decision whether to include it in the article to made by others.

AfD on Robert L. Rooks[edit]

You know, maybe you should let someone, anyone, chime in before closing an AfD, like this one. I wouldn't have nominated it if I was sure it deserved inclusion, and I think my request for comment should mean something - rather than killing the discussion before anyone has had a chance. AfD is not about showing the nominator he's wrong or right, it's about discussion and making a decision.

Speedy keep should be on a legitimate policy basis (like proposing to delete Barack Obama), not because a nominator didn't explain himself well. D O N D E groovily Talk to me 01:14, 31 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It was a tough close, admittedly, since as you said neither side really had a compelling argument. In situations such as that though, the burden falls on those kept to prove it's encyclopedic (proof beyond, of course, merely saying it is), rather than those who think it isn't, simply because you can't prove a negative. Hi Thryduulf, I noticed that the article about CelsiusPro was deleted. I understand that, CelsiusPro being a company, there was doubt about it being informative and noteworthy. To my opinion, what they do and offer is unique and new, and definitely worthy being mentioned, especially seeing lots of company pages that are much more generic. It would be great if you could give me some advice on how i could prevent deletion, I'd love to rewrite the article. Do you happen to have the file still available? Thanks! Saw your note...[edit]

...over at User:RHaworth#Jonathan Keltz.

I would like you to take a look at User:MichaelQSchmidt/Jonathan Keltz. There was an article about this fellow that was sent to AFD in January 2010,[3] and as I myself commented back then, I felt that while the fellow might be seen to meet WP:ENT, there was simply not enough reliable coverage at that time upon which to build a decent BLP. That has changed. In the intervening 14 months, the fellow has received growing coverage and recognition he lacked originally. And with the new coverage, available only since the deletion,[4] I feel it benefits the project to have this new version of the article return to mainspace to further grow and be expanded. I see no cause for a DRV, as there was no flaw in the reasoning for deletion of the original article... but my effort is not exactly the same as the article that was deleted, due to actor's career and coverage not sitting still over the last 14 months. As time and circumstance and coverage have changed (he met WP:ENT and now meets WP:GNG), I seek your approval in its return AND in it not being speedied as a G4 recreation. Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 21:19, 30 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Just an additional note: RHaworth gave his blessing to an return to mainspace,[5] and sent me a link to the version he speedied, which I then found in a google cache.[6] I can well understand his deletion of that earlier version. Yikes. Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 05:26, 1 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
