Message of Thanks and request to give some advice

I recieved the message from bot, thanks for warning me about it. But actually to tell you the truth, I was the new user here on Wikipedia. Please can you give me a sample on how to contribute properly here on this site? Thanks Shanayujilover (talk) 10:44, 17 August 2011 (UTC)

about adding Wikimedia images to files and articles

Dear Tim1357, I received a message from a user:Bot and try to respond to that. Thank you for welcoming me to Wikipedia, yes I am quite new and learning how to edit and improve articles. The Bot {Robot}? sent me a polite warning that if I didn't use the File:10 newspaper article-reverse-complete.jpg within an article it would be selected for deletion by 24th august. In my defence I can only say that when I started using it, Wikimedia and uploading files to it seemed quite hard and difficult for newbies like me who do not know computer programming. Additionally I am not sitting at my computer all day tapping away, I do go to work and am busy. Never do anything private in work time. So, I did want to join the File to an article I was writing about my grandfather, Professor Dobrev but found the Bulgarian Wikipedia is entirely different sphere and another world and gave up, do Istill have time to do it and can you help me please???? thanks very much, Snejana--Dobrevasnejana 23:33, 17 August 2011 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dobrevasnejana (talkcontribs)

Tim, does this tool exclude categories? If so why and if not then there is some bug. Checking http://toolserver.org/~tim1357/cgi-bin/wikiproject_watchlist.py?template=WikiProject%20Turtles does not show for example here, here and here. By the way as I've said before it would be brillant if this tool included talk pages. Regards, SunCreator (talk) 13:10, 21 August 2011 (UTC)

Dashbot Image resize hiccup

I've noticed that Dashbot's upload log [1] is hitting only a few files a day recently, even though Category:Non-free Wikipedia file size reduction request has over 600 reduction requests. Skier Dude (talk) 05:45, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

  • I came here for the same reason. It's over 700 now. Should I start doing manual resizings again? I dislike doing them, but I will if the bot is broken again. Sven Manguard Wha? 09:05, 27 August 2011 (UTC)
    • Also, the bot is no longer putting in the {{non-free reduced}} template when it is done. See this file history for one of the many examples I've come across. Sven Manguard Wha? 08:57, 28 August 2011 (UTC)
      • Someone, in what I can only (civilly) describe as a major lapse in judgement, used the shutoff switch for the bot in order to prevent it from working on a specific file. I have undone that lapse in judgement, issued some harsh but measured words to the person that used the shutoff switch so callously, and the bot is now running smoothly again. I've also watchlisted the shutoff switch, so if this happens again, I'll remember to look there first. Sven Manguard Wha? 13:52, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

Fair Use of Doorways in the Sand Japan cover art.jpg

Tim,

This is the Wikipedia statement on the fair use of book cover art:

This image is of book cover(s), and the copyright for it is most likely owned either by the artist who created the cover(s) or the publisher of the book(s). It is believed that the use of low-resolution images of book covers · to illustrate an article discussing the book in question· on the English-language Wikipedia, hosted on servers in the United States by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, qualifies as fair use under United States copyright law. Other use of this image, on Wikipedia or elsewhere, might be copyright infringement. See Wikipedia:Non-free content for more information.

So what form do I have to fill out to use this graphic and where is it? Rhennius (talk) 23:24, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image File:Shyamchi Aai.gif

The image [File:Shyamchi Aai.gif] has been tagged as an orphaned image by you. This image was used as DVD Cover on the article Shyamchi Aai, over the theatrical released poster for the image. Theatrical released poster had some issues so DVD Cover was uploaded. There is a current discussion going on article's talk page. Based on the discussion, it may be decided which image will be marked as orphaned and will be deleted. Please refer to the talk page for the decision for the same. WebCiting the RadioTimes

Hi there. I noticed at WP:BRFA that you want to add WebCiting to DASHBot. First of all, great idea. Hope it gets approved, WebCiteBOT is dearly missed. Since you have the code for doing such WebCites automatically, do you think I could bother you the request for a manual run? The old Radio Times website changed its links from "www." to "old." but will go offline soon and many Doctor Who related articles have refs sourced to it (see Wikipedia talk:WHO#Radio Times website). Glimmer721 (talk · contribs) tried doing some manually but according to her notification at my talk page (User talk:SoWhy#Uh-Oh...) those seem to have failed. Do you think you could let the WebCite-code run through pages in Category:Doctor Who and augment those refs with the relevant archive-parameter? Regards SoWhy 18:25, 5 September 2011 (UTC)

Error with Indian Trail HS Logo file...

I recently uploaded a logo for Indian Trail High School and Academy to replace the old Indian Trail Academy logo, and placed it in the infobox -- and your bot told me it was orphaned. Error with DASHbot flagging image as orphaned.

Hello. Over two years ago I uploaded [[file:Tecumseh high school ohio logo.gif]] as the logo for Tecumseh High School (New Carlisle, Ohio). You can see in the file's 'File Links' section of the file's page that the above-named article is listed.

Now, as I said two years later, I receive this message:User talk:EricCable#Orphaned_non-free_image_File:Tecumseh_high_school_ohio_logo.gif.

I notice that there is a similar message on your talk page above, so I think maybe it's an error in your bot. If not, let me know what I should change to ensure your bot does not delete my work. Thanks.  Eric Cable  |  Talk  12:59, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

I noticed the same problem. The reason for the problem is that the code for Template:Infobox school was being cleaned up, and the conditional coding for images using underscores instead of just spaces was removed. And since the image no longer displayed correctly, the bot was going through and tagging non-free images used in the infobox as no longer used in an article. The coding has since been restored and images should now display in the article infoboxes correctly. If the bot could be run to remove the deletion templates it placed on the schools articles on September 6, that would be helpful. Rreagan007 (talk) 17:55, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

Error with unreferenced footballer BLPs

Hi there, DASHbot looks to have made a boo-boo with this edit - adding a number of highly referenced articles (some with 30ish references!) to a list of unreferenced articles. Just thought I'd let you know. Cheers, GiantSnowman 19:52, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

No, Dashbot didn't do anything wrong, a change was made to {{BLP unsourced section}} - see the template's talk page for a bit of the discussion - that added 1000 "referenced except for one section" articles to the unreferenced BLP pile. It has since been reverted. The-Pope (talk) 22:56, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
Oh, OK - my mistake, and apologies. Thanks for the clarification. GiantSnowman 22:58, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

Dear Tim,

I recently looked up H.H.S. Glasgow on wikipedia and saw a photograph of it which comes from a book by Kevin Patience. I have the original photograph of H.H.S. Glasgow together with some other photographs of the Sultan's palace. If you want me to send you copies let me know: (Redacted)

Dan, am I right to assume that the copyrights on these photographs are long expired? If so, then they are in the public domain and you can upload them yourself at Wikipedia's sister project, Wikimedia Commons. The project, and not just Tim and I, would be grateful for your contributions. And I'm removing your email address because this page is publicly viewable, and we don't want it getting added to spam databases and all that. —Akrabbimtalk 16:49, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

Logo used in AASHTO article

Good morning. I am the Information Resource Manager for the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). I need to bring to your attention the fact that the logo currently appearing in the article about the association (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Logo-aashto.png) is out of date. It was superseded approximately six years ago by the logo posted on the upper left side of the AASHTO website's homepage (http://transportation.org/). The need to remove the outdated AASHTO logo and replace it with the new logo has been reinforced by such news items as the one appearing just last week on the Tennessee-based Business & Heritage Clarksville website (see http://businessclarksville.com/2011/09/14/aashto-to-president-obama-states-dots-are-ready-to-work-now-32650/). Please let me know if would like me to provide you with an image of the current AASHTO logo for inclusion in that article. I am new to the world of Wikipedia, and also mindful that I need to tread carefully in this particular matter since it does involve my longtime employer, so I would strongly and sincerely appreciate any guidance you can offer. Thank you very much for your time and consideration. I await your reply. Mbcullen (talk) 14:28, 19 September 2011 (UTC) Robert Cullen, AASHTO (Mbcullen)

Hi Tim, the overwhelming consensus at the albums project is that Dashbot has been doing a spectacular job with the ratings migration, and that we should have one final run to take care of all the remaining 52,000 24,000 articles (in short, once and for all). The only change that would need to be made is what Muhandes brought up about removing parentheses surrounding {{rating}}, like in this diff. I hope this is simple, my uneducated guess would be to look for {{rating|xx}} or ({{rating|xx}}), instead of just {{rating|xx}}. So what on your thoughts on getting this finished? —Akrabbimtalk 01:29, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

Also, you are only running this in the article space correct? —Akrabbimtalk 01:52, 11 September 2011 (UTC)
Actually we started with 52,000 articles but "only" 24,000 are left. I think the last time it ran, the bot was not adding References sections to articles that didn't have them, but I'm guessing that it could do that without a huge amount of difficulty. See this post for some additional thoughts on that. Mudwater (Talk) 03:53, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

Whilst it ended up being mainly cleared by the month-by-month approach, DASHBot's lists have been used by many to keep track of topics that they are interested in. Any chance you can add your Cat Tracking tool (not DASHBot) to the other cleanup cats and deletion counters such as Category:BLP articles proposed for deletion, Category:All articles proposed for deletion and Category:Articles for deletion. Is there a way to signup cats for it other than asking here? The-Pope (talk) 15:43, 30 September 2011 (UTC)

When resizing files, could you also convert to PNG if that template is present? The reason I ask this is that, often, the size reduction means that the PNG will have to be even smaller still, in order to properly deal with JPEG artifacts. Doing it all in one move will make it better.

And if the image needs to have its background removed, that can be done after the fact. Thoughts? — trlkly 20:19, 15 October 2011 (UTC)

Bot's aren't supposed to convert to PNG, because it requires a human eye for judging quality. For now, I'll have the bot ignore all jpegs. Thanks! Tim1357 talk 14:47, 16 October 2011 (UTC)

Spy Fox 2 Screenshot Deletion Complaint

For some strange reason, your bot ordered me to delete this screenshot File:Spy Fox 2.JPG of the computer game. I checked the article "Spy Fox 2:Some Assembly Required" and saw that the image that was used to replace this image in the article was completely off-topic. Subsequently, I restored it back to the actual screenshot of the game. Other reasons why this screenshot should be kept are because it was of a low screen resolution, it is used to illustrate the main idea of the game and has a "Fair Use" tag on the image. Because this image is appropriate for the article should not have been considered to be deleted at all.

Sort of a "bug"

File:Efcafrica8poster.jpg tagged by DASHBot and message left on my talk page. But I did not upload the original, mine was just a quick resize for FUR. Then - 23:28, 13 July 2011 Fastily (talk | contribs | block) deleted "File:Efcafrica8poster.jpg" ‎ (Deleted old revision 20110702001112!Efcafrica8poster.jpg: Reduce supplied), so my upload is the only visible picture. In the history USER:Ghost563 still shows as the first entry - so I've cut and pasted the DASHbot message to his talk page. Maybe DASHBot should send to the original uploader? - I'll wager there are cases where that's not applicable either. Maybe send to original and last uploader? I'll let you ponder on that :-)  Ronhjones  (Talk) 18:56, 21 October 2011 (UTC)

Mistaken Tag

Hello, Tim1357! I'm not sure why, but your bot tagged an image I uploaded for deletion based on it being "orphaned". The article's very recent history shows no removal of the image, so it is unclear why the bot thought that it was orphaned. I have removed the tag as such. Cheers :> Doc talk 02:52, 25 October 2011 (UTC)

Wait: I see there was a glitch. When this IP vandalized the page by changing the Infobox, somehow the image got removed without them actually removing it. When the edit was reverted nearly a day later, the image was back. Perhaps the bot saw that it was orphaned during that time and reacted. Weird... Doc talk 03:02, 25 October 2011 (UTC)

The image was part of a page that was simply tampered with and was restored back to it's original state. The image in question is fine now! Musicfreak7676 (talk) 18:21, 1 November 2011 (UTC)

Problem related to DASHBot

DASHBot has tagged File:YEAH-Def_Leppard.jpg for deletion as it's not listed as being used. However, the image is indeed used in the article listed in the FUR. I don't know why that page is not listed under the "File usage" section. Any ideas? Two Hearted River (paddle / fish) 18:27, 11 November 2011 (UTC)

Regarding this (message of your bot):

There are two images:

File:Zagrebacka pivovara logo.png and File:ZP logo.jpg.

Second one is not used as first one replaced it. If first one is in acceptable low resolution please delete second one, if not, please delete first one and replace second one in article Zagrebačka pivovara. SpeedyGonsales (talk) 09:25, 14 November 2011 (UTC)

Bot removed non-replaceable non-free fair-use image 6abc IKEA Thanksgiving Day Parade.jpg

Tim:

Your DASHbot removed a non-replaceable non-free fair-use image (6abc IKEA Thanksgiving Day Parade.jpg) from the 6abc IKEA Thanksgiving Day Parade article. This is an image included in all of the advertising for the parade and its two primary sponsors, WPVI-TV (6abc) and Dunkin' Donuts, and is used as a fair-use image because it is used by the main sponsors to promote the event and is not replaceable. Please replace this image, and if possible, would you please rename the title of the article as "6abc Dunkin' Donuts Thanksgiving Day Parade", as the name of the parade has changed for 2011 due to the new sponsor? Bill S. (talk) 02:21, 21 November 2011 (UTC)

Film articles needing an image

We should talk about this category, I've been trying to get it down too. I wrote a python script using pywikipedia that checks movieposterdb and if it already has an image. I currently just dump it to a file, I couldn't think of a better way. --Peppagetlk 15:04, 17 November 2011 (UTC)

I literally did the exact same thing a few months ago. Weird. Yeah, I just ran a database query and started semi-automatically removing the requests for images. Tim1357 talk 22:57, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
Amazing work on adding all these images! Nice one. Lugnuts (talk) 07:54, 21 November 2011 (UTC)

Non-free reduction bot

Given that this bot is supposed to run daily, why is there still a large backlog of files waiting to be resized, some of which have been sitting there for weeks? I know that the bot can't handle SVG and PDF, which is why I've been doing those manually, but what other things does it skip over? Thanks! — Train2104 (talk • contribs • count) 14:45, 22 November 2011 (UTC)

I had it ignore jpegs for some reason. I'm sure I had a good reason for that, but I forgot, so I'm letting it go back and process jpegs again. Tim1357 talk 17:18, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
A lot better, but any reason why there are still 50+ non-audio files skipped? — Train2104 (talk • contribs • count) 14:31, 24 November 2011 (UTC)
Also I separated SVG/PDF/OGG into another category to make it clearer to users what needs to be done manually. — Train2104 (talk • contribs • count) 15:12, 24 November 2011 (UTC)

Bot fail

I just received this message, notifying me that an image I have uploaded has been marked for deletion because it isn't being used. But it is, as a simple check on What links here shows. Please teach your bot to do the same. Thanks. Rp (talk) 23:24, 27 November 2011 (UTC)

It needs to be used in an article. Tim1357 talk 03:08, 28 November 2011 (UTC)
Why?? Because your bot says so? Rp (talk) 17:28, 28 November 2011 (UTC)
Another issue is the fact that this image is a small fragment from a full image that *is* used in an article. I can't blame your bot for not detecting that, of course. Rp (talk)
Finally, the instructions given for turning the biot off don't work (they tell me to edit a page, but it is protected). I don't want to turn off the bot by the way, I just want it to stop adding its notice on that particular page. Rp (talk) 09:49, 29 November 2011 (UTC)
I have tagged the image as replaceable, because Wikipedia's policy on non-free content requires that it be unreplaceable. This image consists solely of text and can therefore be replaced. — Train2104 (talk • contribs) 11:55, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

I'd like to request an additional feature, if I may: as you can see on numerous album articles (including the diff from above), these are frequently styled in the form "Pitchfork Media | (5.6/10)[3]" but {{Album ratings}} does not recommend the parentheses and sure enough, they're superfluous when you have different columns in a table. They made sense when it was a line of text all run together, but now they don't. If possible, it would be nice if these could be omitted. If that's a hassle, don't worry about it. —Justin (koavf)TCM☯ 15:35, 28 November 2011 (UTC)

The return of the album ratings bot

Greetings, Tim1357. Any chance of bringing back the album ratings bot, to move the rest of the reviews from the album infobox to the album ratings template? That was going really well. I think the next step is to have the bot add a References section to articles that don't have one, along with a {{Reflist}} template. According to my reading of WP:APPENDIX, that should be placed before any "Further reading" or "External links" sections, but should otherwise be the last section in the article, and come before any of the templates, categories, or interlanguage links at the bottom of the article. I also definitely recommend keeping things simple, and focused, by not having the bot do any incidental cleanup. The previous runs of the album ratings bot were hugely popular, I thought, and if the bot can move most of the remaining reviews, the end of the cleanup could be done by hand. Thanks for your consideration of this idea. (If you reply here I will see what you say.) Mudwater (Talk) 21:48, 27 November 2011 (UTC)

Super. I got the bot to work for the most part. I'm having trouble working around navboxes (having the bot recognize which templates are navboxes and should go after the references section). I've got something for that, but for now I'm having the bot do 1000 edits tonight and (for now) ignore articles where the reference section has to go at the end. Tim1357 talk 05:28, 28 November 2011 (UTC)
Hey, this is great. Thanks! I would urge you to keep up the good work. I've created a new talk page section for editors to leave feedback on what the bot does, at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Albums#The return of the album ratings bot. And here's a minor suggestion: It would be slightly better if the {{Reflist}} template had a capital R, although I really would not bother to go back and change any of the ones that were done already. Anyway, I hope you can continue to run more batches of the bot, it would be great to get this project completed. Feel free to reply here, or at the WP Albums talk page section. Thanks again. I'm un-archving this section for further discussion. Mudwater (Talk) 23:37, 11 December 2011 (UTC)
