User Stupidus Maximus ban from wikipedia as a sock.

Tim, how are you? Trust all is well. I am dropping at your talk page, because I believe that you made an unfair call to ban user:Stupidus Maximus as a sock of user:Guildenrich (Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/Guildenrich/Archive). There was a long sock investigation case there, and you closed it based on the only evidence that once Stupidus Maximus had edited from the same Internet Cafe as Guildenrich.

I know well Tirana, Albania. There aren't many internet cafes there. The fact that these two users shared (not at the same time, but almost one year later) an Internet Cafe to edit isn't proof of being a sock. I found the harassment that was given to this user way out of line by all the parties involved to get him banned as a sock.

Delanoy's finding was that They both edited from the same internet cafe (static IP) at one point, and to me, it seems somewhat unlikely, but not impossible for two separate people to do this.

The unlikely is a strong word. He didn't exclude it, but he found it unlikely. Now the Greek pushed with behavioral evidence, but I already debunked that. See my response to FPaS for the use of the Present Tense. The Greeks continued to push and probably tired the admins. As a result you decided to have some peace, but what you are doing is simply raising more eyebrows on the Albanian side, that sees that half of their users are banned as socks of Guildenrich and Sarandioti.

It's just not possible that these two guys, Sarandioti and Guildenrich, are this stupid and continue to enter and be the socks of themselves. By the way, I have looked at Guildenrich's edits and his English is far better than Stupidus Maximus'. You are preventing Albanians who have the same ideas as Guildenrich and Sarandioti from editing. The fact that they continue to edit on topics that are dear to Albanians such as Fustanella and Southern Albania stuff, doesn't make them socks of one another.

This investigation was far from being a true Checkuser investigation. I will ask you to reconsider Guildenrich's edits and Stupidus Maximus edits and see for yourselves, because having edited in the same Internet Cafe of a city like Tirana to me is no proof.

I asked several other clerks to review before I made a block; it is true that each piece of the behavioral evidence, standing alone, is insufficient to justify a block, but taken together, I find the probability that they are different people very low indeed. Hey Tim, Mlpearc here, after helping out in the AfC pending backlog I've realize I like reviewing these submissions, Not a good enough writer to start my own stuff, working these articles is satisfying and after being roped in by User:Chzz. I do have, I think above average grasp on WP:BLP, WP:Verifiability and WP:Notability. I can't believe the DRV had NO consensus?? I made it 5 overturns against 3 endorses?? There is clearly an issue here when there is such a division between the administrators. Something isn't clear in the guidelines and everyone's spinning their own interpretation of WP:GNG. With so much effort put into this article which has been wasted, i have completely lost my faith in Wikipedia. Even if i have a majority that agree with Overturning, it gets deleted. Also the AFD-DRV-AFD-DRV cycle is not relevant as the article got edited and it is clear on the 2nd AFD the administrators did not follow the guidelines set in Consensus as it was yourself that gave the article more time to get a consensus. I stated that i made edits and as Wikipedia states in the Consensus under the heading - Consensus as a result of the editing process, "If other editors accept your changes, then this silent acceptance is, itself, sufficient proof that your changes have consensus at this time. Consensus does not require either that you get prior "permission" to make changes or that the acceptance of your changes afterwards be formally documented. Edits that are neither changed nor removed are always presumed to have consensus until someone actually challenges them." So with no one challenging the new edits over the 7 days which you yourself gave for a concensus, then this should be excepted, and the article relisted at that point. Not for a closing administrator to overrule the Wikipedia guidelines and decide to have the final say with his own opinion. I understood it that the closing administrator was to take a neutral view, deal with the facts of the debate, ie work within Wikipedia guidelines, and basically not give an opinion (or am i wrong in this?). So with this amongst other things, I don't feel it should have even got to a DRV 2nd time round. So (with a heavy heart and a big sigh) please userfy the article as i may at some point come back to it, but currently my faith in Wikipedia is very low Emmamme (talk) 10:45, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

 Done. Consensus is, as you know, not a headcount. I understand your frustrations, but too many discussions in a short period tend not to go well. I'd suggest working on something else in the mean time, and once the article gets more significant coverage in reliable sources independent of the subject it can be brought back. Deleted Article: Where to go from here?

Hi Tim--

I'm not sure of the protocol here. I just noticed this deletion: [[1]]. As the creator, I'd like to have been part of the discussion but I guess I don't have a notification option turned on somewhere. At any rate, I believe that she can satisfy the notability guidelines, even if a few of the references don't. And the other areas that don't meet guidelines could certainly be made to do so; this was after all the first page I contributed. I was proud of that page and thought it a worthwhile contribution. Is there any way I can recover the original article and have another go, incorporating your feedback? Though I know her, I am not closely associated with the artist; I just knew a lot about her from her books and classes. I believe the edits she made were to correct something I wrote that was objectionable and to put a photo of one of her pieces into the public domain and add it to the article, at my request.

RevDel actions

Hi Tim. The revision deletions you did this morning on AN and ANI aren't within WP:REVDEL policy; RD3's definition of "disuptive" is for things like links to malware or browser-crashing sites, not for common vandalism such as was deleted here. RevDel is not expected to hide all unconstructive posts; only those that are the most damaging; it's also not really useful as a WP:DENY tool at the moment because it's still new enough to attract 'lulz' when it's used. Clarification for "Keep" decision

Recently you determined the result of the Articles for Deletion discussion on the page "Puggle" was Keep. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Puggle

Nine-dimensional space

I notice you've closed this debate as a redirect, but deleted and recreated the article. It would have been better I think so create the redirect without deleting, to preserve the page history, especially in case an editor wants to use it to create another article. (talk page stalker) I almost have to agree with stifle on this one. For a "low risk" article such as this one, barring SPA participation, the number of comments were likely enough to make a call. Plus, if "Joe Chill" says "keep", it's usually a "keep". :)

GreenGov2010

After you blocked him for a username violation (found on the edit war board last night), GreenGov2010 (talk · contribs) picked up a new account at GreenIn2010 (talk · contribs). However, they went right back to reinserting the David Duke material that led them to be reported for edit warring in the first place [4]. They also appear to have readded it here [5] as an IP. Reason(s) enough for RFCU/SPI?

Hello Tim, just some FYI... a few days ago on the article page of Philippine Air Force, I have removed some bits of WP:Copyvio images uploaded into commons by LightAj (talk · contribs), but today JackHannen (talk · contribs) re-introduced the same copyvio images. Since then, I have once again removed those same problematic images and then tagged JackHannen with a being a possible sock of LightAj. My question now being, what do I do from here? Archived Sock

Hello. Can I ask you why you so hastily archived this sock case? Yes, I know there’s a pending ANI and the two issues are related but they're also mutually exclusive. We have several issues here that include sockpuppetry, edit-warring and WP:CIVIL . Is it improper to have two concurrent probes at the same time?--Jiujitsuguy (talk) 20:32, 8 June 2010 (UTC)

There's nothing wrong per se with having both an ANI thread and an SPI case, as long as forum shopping is not involved. In this case, however, there's no sockpuppetry as users normally do not have much control over what IP address they use, unlike the case with accounts, and we can't really block someone merely because they decided to, say, edit at work one day instead of at home. Thus any action taken as a result of the SPI would be because the edits themselves were disruptive, something that's best addressed at ANI. Tim Song (talk) 03:20, 9 June 2010 (UTC)
Sorry to disagree. This is not a case where someone simply uses an IP from home and then goes to work and uses the computer there. The Diffs show that multiple IPs were used within a very short span, editing very specific articles (i.e Caroline Glick and Gaza War) and apparantly done in a manner designed to circumvent 3R. The evidence also suggests someone very familiar with wiki syntax. In any event, the complaint filed at ANI seems to have disappeared from the boards.--Jiujitsuguy (talk) 03:41, 9 June 2010 (UTC)

It appears that multiple editors are logging out to avoid 3rr and a 1rr restriction mandated by arbitration in the topic area. Previous discussions mentioning the possibility of a checkuser request can be seen at Talk:Richard Goldstone#semi-prot and Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Enforcement/Archive63#Wikifan12345 et al. If this happens again, what would your recommendation be? I personally don't mind the pages being on semi-protection indefinitely but that does go against many editor's views on allowing anyone to contribute. I do think that any user bucking the system like this is should be prevented from continuing to disrupt a topic area that is already so contentions that AE is required. Can a checkuser be considered if there is evidence that editors are using IPs to avoid scrutiny in the future or is that inappropriate? Cptnono (talk) 04:09, 9 June 2010 (UTC)

Deletion of Articles

Hi Tim,

This is Suzanne Kresta speaking, Theo's supervisor. I am co-editor of the Handbook of Industrial Mixing. A number of us (mixing professionals) found the Wikipedia entries on industrial mixing earlier this year, which were both lacking important information and misleading. My final year chemical engineering students undertook to write accurate and informative articles for Wikipedia, which went through an extensive review and editing process and we are now trying to post them on line. We have had some difficulty getting through the process for mounting images, but are trying to work through that, so we have received numerous messages about those images - all of which we are working on.

From the latest comments around deletion of these articles, I can understand that the articles sound like a handbook, but can assure you that they are original work. Since the articles have been written by senior year students, and edited by a handbook editor, it makes sense that they read well.

Theo and I are quite concerned that he not be blocked from Wikipedia for very legitimate activities, and I am quite dismayed by the deletion of original articles in what I understood was a free forum for information.

Please advise as to how we should proceed, and if appeal to some other "reviewer" is possible.

Wow, this is rather complicated, and I'm sorry to know that you got caught into our complex maze of policies and guidelines. Several things:
  1. If your students wrote the articles, then the copyright situation is complicated. This is because our licenses (CC-BY-SA and GFDL) require attribution to the copyright holder, which in this case include the students. (Normally, for school projects, the students register their own accounts and do the work on Wikipedia directly, which removes the problem.) It's probably best for you to contact our volunteer response team at permissions-en@wikimedia.org to work out the issue. Once the copyright situation is sorted out, I can restore the articles.
  2. Our policy requires one account per person. Thus, Prof. Kresta should post from a separate account and not use the TheodoreNg account.
  3. In the future, it might be best to follow the process outlined in Wikipedia:School and university projects, to avoid confusion and unnecessary work.

Unilateral rename of Cement in Africa

I'm concerned that very shortly after his Afd failed, user:Snottywong proceeded to rename Cement in Africa anyway. He's since been busy snipping WP:REDLINKs from it, not per policy.

I'm considering renaming it back, but don't wish to receive his usual hauling off to WP:ANI with accusations of edit warring. I don't see that AfD as producing consensus for a rename and there did seem to be some support for expanding the article on the broad topic, not just reducing it to the barest and least useful list.

Honestly, there's not much of a consensus to do anything in that AfD except that the page should not be deleted. I'm not seeing anything here that goes outside the normal editorial process (in particular, WP:BOLD) such that admin intervention is either necessary or appropriate. Blocked sock is back

You recently blocked My account now as a duck case of User:Nyannrunning at an SPI case. That user is back, using an 12.101.236.250 (talk) IP account at Talk:Richard Colvin Cox here. Note that he ignores my post, which was directly above this, addresses Crohnie with a "Hello again" from an IP that had never edited here before, which just happens to be from the extended Los Angeles area, where Dooyar/Nyannrunning are located (he travels around to use IPs in the wider area) and begins to go on about a book published by a vanity press company, arguing for its use. This is a very rarely edited article that is mostly hit by socks of User:Nyannrunning. He then goes on to bash me, pushes the book by Harry Maihafer and even makes reference to something that was said about Dooyar/Nyannrunning that he "obsessed about long dead persons". To me, a new editor making references to things said about a banned editor on an article that mostly only that editor targets, making statements to a wiki-friend of mine about me, with whom he has perpetuated many attacks isn't just a WP:DUCK, it's an elephant tiptoeing through the tulips. Can you deal with this as an obvious returning sock IP account? This guy is persistent on this extremely obscure article, plus his treatment of me and his reliance on that book are dead giveaways. If for puppetry (there's an SPI case already archived as WP:DUCK), could you change your block rationale so I can decline the unblock request for the "right" reason? If it's for inserting copyrighted material, it's not actually 100% clear he's wrong about this, and I'd like to unblock and continue discussion on the talk page, which were ongoing when the block was issued. If it's for edit warring, there are several others who engaged in the same thing. Yes, you can treat it as a sock block, too. I've noted the block evasion in the block log. I'm not getting the copyright part - I see no reasonable argument that the material is not copyrighted. Even assuming arguendo that it is not, I hardly think edit warring to remove likely copyvios and to add likely copyvios after being informed warrants the same treatment. T. Mr. Song, I'm writing to you about your deletion of the Jim Bender page. Honestly, I see no reason why this page should have been deleted. As mentioned in the discussion page, is broke no rules or guidelines whatsoever. The "issues" section (childishly called the 'election manifesto' section by one of the deletion advocates) consisted of nothing more than facts about the candidates positions on several issues, and involved no bias or "advertising" of any kind. Furthermore, such a section exists on another candidate's page (found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Binnie). Mr. Binnie is an opponent of Mr. Bender in the NH senate race and if his page is allowed to exist then the Jim Bender page should as well. The Jim Bender Wikipedia page is the opposite of "spam" as it was referred to in the deletion discussion. It was a short, simple article providing basic information about a notable person as described in detail in the deletion discussion. Just an explanation. The logo you corrected was being used as an example of how the "Reviewers" logo looks like the CBS logo. It wasn't there to be a fair use vio in anyway, just a visual example for people outside the US (who may not know of the CBS logo). Rather, if I did not seek admin advice, I would have just copy and pasted the merged article to the article at the correct link. I do get a little confused sometimes when exactly I should request WP:REPAIR, so if you could explain to me when to use it that I'm misunderstanding, please do. I was also confused with your comments to go to WP:RM, since there was a discussion at WT:NYCPT about this. So if you could clear up my concerns, that would be great. If you copy & paste the merged article to the new title then you'd have to somehow attribute that to the user who actually did the merging...it's going to be messy regardless. Basically, as explained in WP:Parallel versions, history merge is useful only for repairing copy-and-paste moves, not c&p merges from multiple pages, as that would mess up the page history. The most that can be done in the latter case is to merge the history of new article with one of the old pages (assuming disjoint history, of course), and then manually attribute the remaining pages. Use WP:RM if you need a page deleted to make way for a move (in two of those cases it's a useless dab page); use WP:REPAIR only if you think the page histories should be merged together. T. Heh. The move was sort of my idea, Amalthea.
Both Inkheart and EunSoo have a common interest in Korean actors and singers (e.g. Lee Jun Ki, Kahi (entertainer), Donghae (singer), etc). They both operate using proxies, and I'm guessing that per your comment there was some similarity in an IP used by both of them. As such, seemed that per the fairly convincing behavioural evidence and the apparent technical evidence they were most likely the same person. I'm happy to reverse if I've made a mistake. :)

Chewygum is a pretty old account (from 2005), and editing times do not seem to match. I doubt they are related. Cordelia Mendoza deleted article

Hi, Tim. I built the page Cordelia Mendoza, which you just deleted after an AfD discussion. I have found stronger archived articles, which I was about to add before the page was deleted, that are solely about that person, which MelanieN, the nominator, stated was needed. Per Wikipedia guidelines, I made a lot of changes per the nom's concerns, but she only commented negatively during the AfD discussion about some of the changes I made, yet she didn't address the improvements. I also messaged her once on her talk page, but she didn't respond to that either so I didn't message her again. The goal, as the discussion progressed, appeared to be to delete rather than improve the article, which I thought was Wikipedia's goal, to improve. Hullaballoo Wolfowitz recognized the notability of the person, saying the article "clearly meets the 'GNG.'" Also, someone who appears to be possibly related to MelanieN (Rnickel) wrote an article that cited the Peninsula Beacon newspaper, even though MelanieN for the Cordelia Mendoza article said, in her opinion, the Peninsula Beacon wasn't a reliable source, stating one of the reasons was they use freelance reporters along with staff reporters. The Peninsula Beacon was good enough for the Bennie Edens page but not good enough for the Cordelia Mendoza page? I looked up the Peninsula Beacon and their reporters all appear to be on-staff writers (no "special contributors" in the lot). I thought that on Wikipedia those who suggested "keep" or "delete" couldn't just throw out a reason without explanation as to, even briefly, why. One user, who goes only by an IP address, said the fundraisers Cordelia Mendoza headed were "run-of-the-mill -- he/she just tossed that out, like it was a fact. After the user posted that, I looked up Wikipedia's definition of "run-of-the-mill": "common," "ordinary," that do not "stand out from all the rest." According to newspaper reports about these events, which I will include in a new and/or revised article, her annual fundraisers for national groups each year raise five figures. I didn't press these issues further in the AfD discussion other than my short comments, addressing only some of them, because I didn't want to get off topic or sound argumentative. I would like the opportunity to cite stronger reliable sources. How would you like me to approach this? I can completely rewrite the article to Wikipedia standards and guidelines citing those reliable sources. Do you suggest using a Special:MyPage? Or would you be able to bring back the article to afford me the opportunity to improve on it, per the nominators concerns? Also, you didn't give a reason for deleting the article. My understanding is that AfD discussions aren't votes? I'd like to know the reason as a guidepost as I rewrite the article. Thanks very much for your time. What's the link between Rnickel and MelanieN? If you think they are the same person, WP:SPI is that way; otherwise WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS is not a valid argument. You seemed to have conveniently forgot to mention the numerous editors commenting after HW that found her insufficiently notable for inclusion. Your argument about the ordinariness or lack thereof of the fundraisers are misplaced. It should have been raised in the AfD, not here, and in any event a five-figure fundraiser sounds quite ordinary to me. And in case you didn't notice, admins normally do not give rationales in easy cases, not because it isn't a vote, but because the result is obvious. Hi Tim,

Sorry to bother you on a Sunday. My name is Ryan Long and I am with a company called Roadwings Entertainment. Roadwings Entertainment is the a film distribution company that has taken on a few titles including Before thge Music Dies http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Before_the_Music_Dies. Anyway, the other night we were here at the director (Andrew Shapter's) home and we discussed adding him to Wikipedia since his first few films have become some prominent and since he's taken on other projects like writing for The Huffington Post and directing the new Lollapalooza film.

We urged him to post his info on Wikipedia thinking that he would have a better chance that we would to get his name listed. That's where it backfired. We now know how that's considered a serious violation. He was just trying to help us get ready for an educational tour. Our apologies. You were right to delete and block.

With that said, his production company (FaronWest) is housed in the same office and after learning about the previous violation, we made a legitimate effort to post using FaronWest. I was careful and I re-wrote the bio entry and made it very short (in contrast to what the bot recognized as a copyright violation that was on his website). I even noted that i recognized the error in myTalk. That's when we started getting nasty notices and deletions.

I'm very sorry. I didn't know the damage I was doing and I won't do it again. I am new at FaronWest and my job is to promote Andrew on a U.S tour this Fall. His company is focused on music history and I'm afraid his user name is now blacklisted. Tim, I promise he's not out to do any harm to Wikipedia and I promise that posting his bio was not meant to do any harm either.

I work on the same IP server and I figured it would be best to write and honest note instead of trying to change my id or location. I tried to write you and appeal from FaronWest, but because you blocked and deleted it, there was no way I could respond. So now I'm on his guesthouse business email address.

All we were trying to do was get Andrew listed in time for his tour of U.S. Universities this fall. He's promoting music education and Wikipedia is a BIG part of that! http://www.hulu.com/watch/62945/before-the-music-dies

Is there a legitimate way to post a bio on Andrew without getting blacklisted because of my mistakes? If I started over and was careful with the rules, can I still post the bio? Or is his name now blacklisted forever because of our mishap the other night?

Hi Tim. Thanks for your help again. Incidentally, when I tried using Twinkle to apply the SPI report to User:Mac's account, it failed to work. Which is why I flipped it and applied it, wrongly, to the suspected sock account. Was that just a fluke, or was there a reason Twinkle failed to load it the first time, you think? I prefer using the automated tools: is there a glitch that you're aware of when Twinkle is used to file an SPI with a pre-existing report page as the target, perhaps? AfC helper script bug

When the AfC helper script is set to auto-notify the submitter, please make it do that after the changes to the AfC page were successfully saved. More importantly, please fix the script so that the spam filter does not cause Edit failed and cause the loss of the "additional comment". Perhaps nowiki or omit the link if the spam filter catches a URL such as http://ezinearticles.com/?... or any other that is on the blacklist. Thanks, PleaseStand (talk) 17:50, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

Red X Won't fix. This is such a rare scenario that it's not nearly worth the effort. You are told that the edit has failed (i.e., it does not fail silently, unlike, say, Twinkle), and presumably can fix the problem yourself. Since you would be fixing it anyway, I don't see a problem with it making the notification even in case of a failed edit, since it saves you the problem of redoing the notification, too. T. AFD templates

Thanks for your work closing AFDs, but please be careful to use the templates correctly in the future. In this edit [27], you copied the {{oldafdfull}} template for the 2nd nom from the one for the 1st, creating an unnecessary second infobox and resulting in the infobox for the 2nd nomination wrongly linking to the 1st nomination. Instead, you should have used the date2, result2, and page2 parameters, and made sure that the page2 parameter contained the correct link (as seen in the fixed edit [28]).
