I am no current technical expert, just a gnome with a couple of obsolete diplomas and an interest in environmental issues. I have enjoyed the fossil-fuel era enormously, and feel guilty about all the the internal combustion engine motivated hedonistic pleasure and (unwitting) pollution so occasioned ... First look

An engineer comments - this is interesting because it solves the intermittency problem of renewables, which more or less doubles the cost of them. I can imagine a yard full of cast aluminium rods built up in summer and 'burned' in winter near an industrial scale photovoltaic setup. The aluminium can be left outside for days months or years. I don't know what the loop efficiency of this will be, but if it is better than 50% you have a viable system, and even if it is worse than that I think it might still make sense.
