Ban Notice

Did you removed the BAN notice from your page? They told me we're not allowed to do so. --damiens.rf 00:50, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

Gotta second that one, man. You have to have it up on your page if you are under a ban. Buffs (talk) 07:48, 2 July 2011 (UTC)
Why didn't the closing admins give it to me? Where are the ban rules regarding this?--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 11:22, 2 July 2011 (UTC)
I have found Wikipedia:BAN#User_pages. The word may seems to suggest some discretion for the closing admin. My guess is that if my topic bans were for mainspace issues, the admin would have put a notice on my page.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 11:29, 2 July 2011 (UTC)
  • Perhaps you folks are thinking of WP:BLOCK notices. Blocks are quite different than topic bans. (and [block notices] should not be removed until the block is lifted or expired) In reviewing the WP:BAN page, I see no mention of it being forbidden to remove a [topic ban] notice once a user has been notified of his or her restriction. I understand the #User pages section to refer to a "Site Ban". If I am in error, feel free to point me/us to the relevant section or policy. — Ched :  ?  12:06, 2 July 2011 (UTC)

As long as you're following the terms of the topic bans, I don't think it's necessary to keep a notice on your page. 28bytes (talk) 15:32, 2 July 2011 (UTC)

  • The section on ban notices seems to refer only to site-banned editors, as it mentions replacing the entire page by the {{banned}} notice. Reaper Eternal (talk) 19:28, 2 July 2011 (UTC)

Gery Chico GA?

My sincerest apologies for not being available during Gery Chico's GAR. I initially decided to take a short break, but I increasingly got distracted by my summer internship. Has the article passed GAR? I don't see the article listed on the WP:GA list, nor do I see a GA symbol on the article. Geread (talk) 03:25, 5 July 2011 (UTC)

The article passed the GAR, it is here: Wikipedia:Good article reassessment/Gery Chico/1 I left a fairly ambiguous (apologies) edit summary mentioning I wanted someone else to list it, as I don't know whether to put it into Law or Politics. I've now put it into Law and added the GA icon. Szzuk (talk) 07:46, 5 July 2011 (UTC)

Dear Tony, we have gotten some very bad blowback and bad publicity over the handling of this article. Some wrong infromation (his place of residence) and defamatory information (that he was guilty of copyright infringement) were inserted by a vandal, and then the subject's attempts to "fix" the problem were reverted to the "wrong" diff. I know it was not your fault, nor your intent, but could you step away from this article for a while? Thanks for understanding. Bearian (talk) 16:12, 12 July 2011 (UTC)

Template titles

Hi Tony... just wondering why you're creating templates with NPOV/OR headings using terminology such as "Big Four Pageants" and "Grand Slam Pageants"? Such terms are only used on blogs etc and not in reliable sources... a search of the Google News archives comes up with no mention of the first[1] and only one mention of the second - referencing such blogs [2]. In my opinion neither terminology belongs on Wiki in any form. PageantUpdater talkcontribs 01:25, 14 July 2011 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Love, Loss, and What I Wore

The article Love, Loss, and What I Wore you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . There are a number changes or clarifications needed to be addressed. If these are fixed within seven days, the article will pass, otherwise it will fail. See Talk:Love, Loss, and What I Wore for things which need to be addressed. Jezhotwells (talk) 21:20, 14 July 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the message. I added some recommendations to the review page. As I have said before, I urge you to take these articles to PR before nominating them for GA, since I think they are very incomplete. If I were reviewing these for GA, I think I would be annoyed at being asked to review so incomplete an article; and there are many other articles languishing at GA that are much closer to a GA level of completeness that are delayed by reviewers having to look at articles that are not ready. Why not go to PR first, get comments to help you bring the articles up to strong B-class and then begin making your push for GA? Just my 2 cents. All the best, -- Ssilvers (talk) 22:08, 14 July 2011 (UTC)

Hi. Ruhrfisch's comments are super. If you listen to him/her, and to Jezhotwells in the other article, you will gain a lot of insight about how to expand articles about theatre pieces. I'm afraid I have done all I have time for on these articles. I will say that I feel that an article about a theatre piece should not be considered "GA" class unless the contributors have read and summarized the script. That seems like an absolute minimum threshold to me. I do not agree with your arguments that a lack of online published info about a subject means that it should be easier to reach GA. On the contrary, I think it means that the article cannot proceed to GA until the proponents have gone to the library to finish the research. Hey Tony, the headers on the Drama Desk templates are very hard to read since its dark blue text on a dark grey background. Can you change them from #8A8A8A to something lighter, like #CCCCCC? Thanks! Kaldari (talk) 04:11, 18 July 2011 (UTC)

Those colors are all rather dark, especially the last one. Why not go with some lighter colors so the text stands out more? Kaldari (talk) 21:19, 18 July 2011 (UTC)
Here are some lighter equivalents: #ccfffd, #c1d1df, #d7f1d7. I think I like the last one the best of those three. Kaldari (talk) 21:23, 18 July 2011 (UTC)

Julia Roberts

Hi. I read Julia Roberts' article since you mentioned in on Michelle Pfeiffer's GA nomination. Im sorry for my late reply. The article seems complete. I can suggest you to:

Add the place where she lives or something like that. Although the PL section is pretty complete, she's one of the highest profile actresses I can think of. Sometimes I find hard to find information of lower profile actresses when I work on their articles. I guess you can find some interesting facts (I mentioned the place where she lives as an example) about JR since there is more available info online in comparison with other personas.

You mentioned her net worth on the lead. I don't see that on the rest of the article. It could complete the PL section.

You still have to find sources for the last paragraph of Charities. Watching the article I guess you're still working on it.

For the career part, I'd expand Notting Hill since is a popular movie (at least where I live the movie is played on tv quite often) and you mentioned it on the lead.

You mentioned she got an AA nomination for Pretty Woman. You may want to add some critical acclaim. I'm still working with GDuwen to make Jennifer Connelly a FA. You can find on her article she was considered for the role.

Erin Brocovich was also an important movie I guess, so I'd recommend to source that she was nominated and to add some critical acclaim. Maybe expand the plot a little bit, but it's not necessary if you don't want to.

Hope this helps. I'll be working again with GDuwen to promote Naomi Watts' article. We still have sections to work on before nominating. I'm mentioning it since you reviewed our prior GA noms, so you might be interested in reviewing this next time.--Gunt50 (talk) 15:10, 27 July 2011 (UTC)

Ambassador Program: assessment drive

Even though it's been quiet on-wiki, the Wikipedia Ambassador Program has been busy over the last few months getting ready for the next term. We're heading toward over 80 classes in the US, across all disciplines. You'll see courses start popping up here, and this time we want to match one or more Online Ambassadors to each class based on interest or expertise in the subject matter. If you see a class that you're interested, please contact the professor and/or me; the sooner the Ambassadors and professors get in communication, the better things go. Look for more in the coming weeks about next term.

In the meantime, with a little help I've identified all the articles students did significant work on in the last term. Many of the articles have never been assessed, or have ratings that are out of date from before the students improved them. Please help assess them! Pick a class, or just a few articles, and give them a rating (and add a relevant WikiProject banner if there isn't one), and then update the list of articles.

Once we have updated assessments for all these articles, we can get a better idea of how quality varied from course to course, and which approaches to running Wikipedia assignments and managing courses are most effective.

Time 100 lists

The problem with the previous versions, as I recall, was that they reproduced the lists. Since these lists are subjectively selected and edited, Time can claim a copyright on them. So unfortunately it is not "a matter of the prior lists not being done well", but that they are not material that is free to be released under our license. It appears that your recreations do the same, and therefore need to be removed again. The general consensus from past discussion was that it is fine to mention that someone appears on the list in an article about them, but unless there's something meaningful to be written about the list that doesn't involve simply reproducing it, there's no point in having an article dedicated to the list itself. --Michael Snow (talk) 22:27, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

Sourced commentary is okay to justify having an article, but reproducing the actual list within the article is still a copyright problem. I will look to see if I can find the old discussion. It involved a number of lists of this type, not just the Time 100, so I'm not sure where to track it down at the moment. --Michael Snow (talk) 22:41, 29 July 2011 (UTC)
Here's one previous discussion. You can also talk to User:Dragons flight, who came up with the original "list of problematic lists". --Michael Snow (talk) 22:58, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on File:Rossini-William Tell Overture.ogg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion," which appears inside of the speedy deletion ({{db-...}}) tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate). Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
