Disambiguation link notification for May 15

An automated process has detected that when you recently edited The Trump Organization, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Bedford, New York (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver).

(Opt-out instructions.) --DPL bot (talk) 10:25, 15 May 2018 (UTC)

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. RonBot (talk) 17:16, 9 June 2018 (UTC)

Regarding this nomination, please note there is also a Category:Grammy Award venues which you might consider nominating for the same reason. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:08, 14 June 2018 (UTC)

Glendale, Calif

Hi,

I understand now I was working on the wrong Glendale. When I first read the article, I looked at the source for the 1855 statement. That citation referred to a reference about the Glendale area of Washoe County, Nevada. That sentence is incorrect (refers to Washoe County) . Thanks for fixing this. I would have appreciated it if you had pinged me to let me know that I had made a mistake. MauraWen (talk) 14:14, 14 September 2018 (UTC)

@MauraWen: Sorry, I figured that the undo would appear in your alerts. The Nevada Place Names reference that you're looking at has both Glendales lumped under the one heading. Where it says "GLENDALE (Clark)" is the start of the info about the Glendale in Clark County, including that it was settled in 1855. Toohool (talk) 19:08, 14 September 2018 (UTC)
thx for responding. I keep making mistakes (two Glendales), I need to be more careful in the future! MauraWen (talk) 20:54, 14 September 2018 (UTC)

Gold Strike

The Gold Strike Hotel & Casino has removed the "Gold Strike" name from its large markee sign along the I-15 highway about 2 weeks ago. Talking with the staff that we know, who work at the casino, "Terribles" has finished paying the "Gold Strike" name use license agreement with MGM Grand. I have no other written reference to site. Calling the Hotel, they are now using the Terribles Road House name and not Gold Strike. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Engineer Lou (talkcontribs) 22:10, 14 September 2018 (UTC)

@Engineer Lou: I understand. Unfortunately, Wikipedia's policy on verifiability doesn't allow us to write articles based on what we've seen with our own eyes or what someone has told us in a conversation. Sometimes this results in Wikipedia being a little behind the times when it comes to recent developments. Hopefully, one of the local newspapers or another reliable source will pick up on the change soon so that we can update the article. Toohool (talk) 23:14, 14 September 2018 (UTC)

Citation for casino name change found here: https://www.americancasinoguide.com/nevada/terribles-road-house-jean.html Engineer Lou (talk) 02:08, 15 September 2018 (UTC)

@Engineer Lou: That page is wrong and also doesn't support the claim that the Gold Strike is now called Terrible's Hotel and Casino. It says that the Gold Strike is now called Terrible's Road House.. but that is actually the name of the huge convenience store and gas station that was built on the other side of the freeway from the Gold Strike, as you can see here. Hi Toohool. Thank you for intimating me with good practices. I shall adhere and try not to be seeming spammy although I am confident that any information passed shall always be neutral. Thanks again. Hi Toohool. I searched Google for the citation that parlay article required, the best I could find was the one that I inserted. It explained how parlay true odds work. I work in the online gambling industry and stumble into wikipedia resources on the matter a lot, there's a ton of information missing. When I see I can help I add info or a citation link when wikipedia asks for one. I do not link to sites I promote, I link to sites that have the missing info or citation. If the reference link I added does not fulfill the citation requirements, then OK, if I stumble to another resource that explains true odds I'll try with that one. --David1768 (talk) 12:49, 26 October 2018 (UTC)

Gambler's Fallacy Comment Removal

"Hello, I'm Toohool. I noticed that you made a comment on the page Talk:Gambler's fallacy that didn't seem very civil, so it has been removed..." (UTC)

Hi Toohool, I'm Laguna Greg. Thanks for your message. I don't remember the comment I made on the article talk page and, since you removed it, I can't even say whether I was out of line or not. Since that is a public talk page and not your own space, that was a little over the top. I know I've seen much worse, many many times over, and retained for decades. After all, that's what talk pages are for -- to talk. if you take it down, there's no way the conversation to continue for anyone. Also, Why didn't you just copy it to my talk page? I'm quite at a loss as to what to say now, and can't see your point. Laguna greg 23:32, 18 July 2019 (UTC)

Forever Marilyn

Your edit summary mentions vandalism and Twinkle--and that's all. Yahboo's simplified caption and comma certainly don't hurt; meanwhile the public's [continuing] enthusiasm could use, if not a better citation, my second one. (Linking the word enthusiastic was an afterthought.) Please advise.--Brogo13 (talk) 00:39, 7 August 2019 (UTC)

@Brogo13: I don't know how else to interpret the URL you added as a supposed citation. Toohool (talk) 00:45, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
"The public" includes Marilyn's fans, fans of her movies, and (lest we forget) Seward's fans; their enthusiasm can and should be presumed. In, ahem, all fairness the rest of us literally have points of view too, Yahboo most deservedly.--Brogo13 (talk) 02:17, 7 August 2019 (UTC)

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Ladbrokes Coral - merger versus acquisition

Hi - The lead should reflect the main text of the article (see WP:LEAD). At the moment both citations used in the main text refer to a "merger". The transaction was presented as a merger at the time and if you want to call it an acquisition you will need to cite this. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 01:18, 7 December 2019 (UTC)

@Dormskirk: The language is already in the article and cited: "To effect the merger, Ladbrokes acquired the Coral Group and then changed its name from Ladbrokes plc to Ladbrokes Coral Group plc." Toohool (talk) 01:37, 7 December 2019 (UTC)
OK. In which case I think you should reflect that wording in the lead. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 09:42, 7 December 2019 (UTC)

Recent edit reversion

In this edit here, I reverted some information that appears to be a violation of our copyright policy.

I provided a brief summary of the problem in the edit summary, which should be visible just below my name. You can also click on the "view history" tab in the article to see the recent history of the article. This should be an edit with my name, and a parenthetical comment explaining why your edit was reverted. If that information is not sufficient to explain the situation, please ask.S Philbrick(Talk) 12:30, 22 March 2020 (UTC)

@Sphilbrick: I think you're mistaken. The page you cited as the source of the copyvio seems to be merely a copy of an earlier revision of the entire Wikipedia article, and lists its source as Wikipedia at the bottom. Toohool (talk) 16:11, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
Toohool, Then it means there was a violation of our Copy within Wikipedia guideline.
This type of edit does get picked up by Copy Patrol and a good edit summary helps to make sure we don't accidentally revert it. However, for future use, would you note the best practices wording as outlined at Wikipedia:Copying_within_Wikipedia? In particular, adding the phrase "see that page's history for attribution" helps ensure that proper attribution is preserved.
I will revert my removal, could you add the attribution?S Philbrick(Talk) 16:38, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
I didn't copy it from somewhere else, I was just reverting the previous edits that removed that content, as is apparent from the page history. Toohool (talk) 16:45, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
Toohool, It's not apparent to me. You said "there is no such blanket rule against analyst opinions, and this content seems to provide valuable context about the company's position in the world". Sounds like justification for addition of material. If you had said you were reverting to an earlier version, which is a common edit summary, I never would have challenged it. A tag has been placed on File:The Terror of War.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a non-free file with a clearly invalid licensing tag; or it otherwise fails some part of the non-free content criteria. If you can find a valid tag that expresses why the file can be used under the fair use guidelines, please replace the current tag with that tag. If no such tag exists, please add the {{Non-free fair use}} tag, along with a brief explanation of why this constitutes fair use of the file. If the file has been deleted, you can re-upload it, but please ensure you place the correct tag on it.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Allegiant Stadium

Hey there, see the discussion we had about 3 years ago regarding future dates in the infobox, which has been the norm on similar articles about new stadiums. WP:CRYSTAL talks about Wikipedia not predicting the future, so the general use in stadium articles is avoiding future opening dates in the "Opened" parameter of the infobox. "Opened" is past tense, meaning it has already happened. It certainly makes sense to mention planned opening dates in the body of the article when they are sourced (which CRYSTAL allows), but opening dates can, and often do, change, even more so now with all the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19. The general practice for including dates in the infobox is waiting for the event to actually happen. No need to rush. --JonRidinger (talk) 18:02, 4 May 2020 (UTC)

Tropicana Atlantic City

Not according to the New Jersey Casino Control Commission, the regulating body of gaming operations (i.e. Casinos) in the State of New Jersey their records show that Eldorado Resorts is the owner and operator and that takes precedence over any other reference because their the ones who investigated and licensed the Tropicana as its owner/operator. YborCityJohn (talk) 18:48, 30 August 2020 (UTC)

@YborCityJohn: The Commission is listing the license holders.. note that it says "Casino Licensee". That's the company that operates the casino, and therefore is listed in the "Operating License Holder" field. The "Owner" field is whoever physically owns the building. Oftentimes they are two different parties, with the operator leasing the building from the owner. The owner won't be listed on any casino licensing site, but you can find the citation in the History section of the article that shows when the property was sold to GLP. Toohool (talk) 22:17, 30 August 2020 (UTC)
@Toohool:, With all due respect your wrong, the licensee is the operator and PARENT is the parent company of the licensee Tropicana Atlantic City Corp is listed as the Licensee and Eldorado Resorts as the PARENT company, no where does it mention Gaming and Leisure Properties, so I again reiterate the NJCCC database takes precedence over anything listed on Eldorado or Gaming and Leisure Properties websites because they are the regulator agency and therefore their information is the best reference.
@YborCityJohn: You said it yourself, Eldorado Resorts is the parent company of the entity that operates the casino. That doesn't mean they own the casino, it means they operate the casino. Nowhere on that page does it say that Eldorado owns the casino. Toohool (talk) 04:25, 31 August 2020 (UTC)

Wikipedia links and copyright

Hi, Toohool. I saw that you added a link in an External Links section and wrote in your edit summary: "link to the full text now that it has entered the public domain". Good news: You can link to any work in the EL section -- it doesn't need to be in the public domain. You can't copy a copyrighted work, but linking to it is fine. In fact most of our footnotes and links on Wikipedia are to copyrighted sources, but links are perfectly OK. -- Ssilvers (talk) 14:06, 12 January 2022 (UTC)

@Ssilvers: Thanks for the note. One does have to be careful about linking to works that are under copyright per WP:COPYLINK. And the point of my edit summary is that the copy I'm linking to (at HathiTrust, for example) usually has just become available because the work has just entered the public domain. Toohool (talk) 14:22, 12 January 2022 (UTC)
What WP:COPYLINK says is that one cannot "knowingly and intentionally" direct traffic to infringing sites (and even then, the conduct would have to be egregious and ongoing to present a legal problem). So, people editing here in good faith do not need to worry. Anyhow, happy editing. -- Ssilvers (talk) 14:58, 12 January 2022 (UTC)

Copyright for 1968 Vietnam waterboarding photograph

I know that this image was published on 21 January 1968 on the front cover of the Washington Post, apparently credited to UPI. I don't know if it was published in other newspapers that might not have had copyright notices. Is there a way to check without getting newspapers.com access? This image if it's kosher could be a great addition to a variety of Wikipedia articles. It's really hard to find images of torture actually being used, for obvious reasons. (t · c) buidhe 23:25, 18 February 2022 (UTC)

@Buidhe: I don't know a way to do it without access to an archive like Newspapers.com or NewspaperArchive.com, other than spending a very long day looking at microfilm at your local library. You can get free access to both of those archives through the Wikipedia Library if you meet the requirements.
In theory, the publication in the Washington Post placed the photo in the public domain, because there was no copyright notice in the name of the copyright owner, UPI. However, having just one example leaves open the possibility that the photo was distributed with a copyright notice but that particular newspaper neglected to print it. So we need to find several samples of the photo and see that none of them have copyright notice.
I found 9 instances of the photo in a quick search, and none had copyright notice, so you're golden. Here are 6 that lacked even a notice for the newspaper as a whole:

Forever Marilyn

Would you be opposed to me replacing this photo with one that shows how large it is compared to nearby palm trees? I was there several months ago and the location of the sculpture is quite impressive when viewed with its surroundings. APK whisper in my ear 08:21, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

Ok I'm confused. I thought there would be a non-free issue with replacing the photo but I see Commons:Category:Works after The Seven Year Itch subway scene exists. I have several photos but didn't think they would be allowed there. APK whisper in my ear 08:32, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

@APK: I'm not opposed to replacing the image with one that better shows the scale. Couldn't say if I support a particular image as an overall improvement without seeing it. File:Man with a Camera-2.jpg would be a good one I think.

The copyright issue is that the sculpture is copyrighted. At least some of the photographs on which the sculpture is based are supposedly in the public domain, but the sculpture itself is a derivative work that is subject to its own copyright. So any photograph of it on Wikipedia needs to comply with the non-free content criteria, such as using a reduced image size and including a fair-use justification on the file description page. The photos of the sculpture on Commons are copyright violations and should be deleted; it's just that nobody has gotten around to it. (Once you start playing copyright police on Commons, it's like emptying the ocean with a teaspoon.) Toohool (talk) 18:53, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

Here's the image. APK whisper in my ear 22:11, 2 March 2022 (UTC)
@APK: That looks fine. I don't know that it really shows the scale very well, but at least the lighting is better than the current image. Toohool (talk) 04:02, 3 March 2022 (UTC)
Ok thanks. I'm not sure if I tagged the other photo properly, but I assume a mod will understand the reasoning. APK whisper in my ear 04:30, 4 March 2022 (UTC)

Dude, pay attention to half of the obscure and spammy links that hang in your articles and you don't touch them, and then think about what you're doing wrong... Linking citations in references

MOS:REFLINK says "Citations stand alone in their usage, so there is no problem with repeating the same link in many citations within an article; e.g. =|work=[[The Guardian]]". Linking the source can help the reader judge what kind of source it is. I think it's a bad idea to remove a link without being very sure that it will help nobody. A lot of editors are thanking me for adding links in these cases. Even worse, you put incorrect publication names in the articles. It is never the right thing to revert all of an edit because you disagree with part of it. Chris the speller yack 22:41, 4 October 2022 (UTC)

@Chris the speller: My objection is not to the fact that the links are repeated, but to the fact that it is completely unnecessary and distracting WP:OVERLINKING to link to the article about a newspaper (or any of the other things that might be mentioned in a citation, like the author, publisher, city, etc.), when we all know with 100% certainty that the reader is looking for the source that verifies whatever fact they just read. Where the article has an established citation style that does not include these wikilinks, that style should not be changed without good reason, per WP:CITEVAR, and certainly shouldn't be made inconsistent by changing it for a subset of the refs. And you really can't seriously be objecting to the fact that I didn't make a zillion tedious edits by hand to preserve the barely-worthwhile "The"s that you're adding. Toohool (talk) 22:51, 4 October 2022 (UTC)
Yes, I'm serious that you shouldn't drop part of a publication's correct name. I have no more time to spend on discussing this with someone who doesn't care about what's accurate and who doesn't understand that CITEVAR is referring to APA style vs. ASA style, not the presence or absence of links. @Euanbar: The site you linked to is not at all suitable for use in an encyclopedia. Please see the reliable sources policy for info on the types of sites that are acceptable for use as references. Toohool (talk) 18:18, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
Thank you. I surely dont have the intent to promote the site but bringing up-to-date info to Wiki readers. Please allow me to understand this better. Is there any misinformation in context of information ? Because I believe I saw more than 5 citations from https://www.legalsportsreport.com/ which contributed almost identical information to mine. Euanbar (talk) 18:37, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
@Euanbar: Your information is welcome, all you would need to do is find a more reputable source to cite. Newspaper articles are usually good. LegalSportsReport is not a great source either, so you are welcome to replace those citations with more reputable sources. Toohool (talk) 18:57, 31 May 2023 (UTC)

Your deletion of the post Chemogram

Dear Mr. Toohol, I am happy to disagree with you in your decision to delete the edit. The chemograms and the linked illustration are correct, especially from the point of view of an art historian, in all the criteria you specify for this rubric. The invention of these chemograms in 1974 revolutionized the interface between painting and photography and for the first time closed it with significance for art history as a whole. The invention was already published internationally in the years 1974-76 in corresponding photo magazines and the trade press. Since the publications are specifically a mass medium, it does not change the art-historical relevance, which you can also understand in the medium of Wikipedia itself from the regulations you apply and the associated scientific claim, which and I hope you understand correctly , must not be based solely on mass.***

Best regards! Juniperi

      • (This is a list of photographs considered the most important in surveys where authoritative sources review the history of the medium not limited by time period, genre, topic, or other specific criteria. These images may be referred to as the most important, most iconic, or most influential—but they are all considered key images in the history of photography.)

Juniperi (talk) 14:22, 20 June 2023 (UTC)

@Juniperi: You may be right about the importance of the work you added. However, Wikipedia follows a neutral point of view policy, which says that we do not write articles based on our own viewpoints as editors, but rather summarize the views published by reputable sources. The only way we can have a "list of the most important <anything>" on Wikipedia is if we have some objective criteria based on reliable sources that have analyzed the important works in the field. If you have ideas about criteria that can make the list more comprehensive or well-rounded, with reference to sources, please feel free to raise them on the article talk page. Toohool (talk) 02:03, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
Dear Toohool,
I do not understand if you have some objective criteria based on reliable sources, such as the indicated doctoral thesis from the University of Granada, which, as you rightly claim and I am aware of myself as an author in Wikipedia, scientifically documents the important works have analyzed in this field and have some objective criteria, they cannot recognize an essential part of this doctoral thesis, based on reliable sources that have analyzed important works in this field. In addition, the invention of chemograms shown was already published and shown in the 1970s. More recently, there was a major, acclaimed exhibition in 2018 in Colômbia at the Museo Arte de Moderno de Bucaramanga.
Best regards JUNIPERI Juniperi (talk) 17:33, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
@Juniperi: The criteria as you quoted above is that the works are listed in "surveys where authoritative sources review the history of the medium". So the sources that are acceptable for inclusion are those that span the whole history of photography, such as the Time magazine feature that listed the most important photographs of all time. A thesis that is specifically about chemograms wouldn't meet that criteria, since it doesn't span all of photography. Neither would an exhibit about chemograms.. If there were a museum exhibition that tried to show the most significant photos of all time, that might be a good source. Toohool (talk) 15:48, 22 June 2023 (UTC)

@Poketape: Please see the message I left on your talk page. Copying and pasting page text is not the proper way to change the title of an article. Professional gamblers

Hello. I see that you reverted my edit on gambling. There are registered companies that are professional gamblers. Here in England, the football clubs Brentford FC and Brighton and Hove Albion are both owned by professional gamblers. They are not seen as scammers. Therefore, I would argue that the current wording that there is no strategy with an expected value of a profit is too strong. Epa101 (talk) 22:38, 8 March 2024 (UTC)

@Epa101: The people you're referring to are involved in poker and sports betting. Those are activities where a skilled player can make a profit. They are not the forms of gambling that are being discussed in the section you edited, as they do not involve "mathematically unprofitable bets". That section talks about strategies like the Martingale that many hucksters claim can be used to beat games like roulette. Toohool (talk) 02:59, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
OK, I see your point. I thin that the term "mathematically unprofitable" makes the sentence into a tautology, so I feel that the sentence could be improved. As I don't know much about games like roulette, I'll leave it for now. Thanks. Epa101 (talk) 10:17, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
