August 2023[edit]

Information icon Hello. Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. I noticed that your recent edit to Igbo people did not have an edit summary. You can use the edit summary field to explain your reasoning for an edit, or to provide a description of what the edit changes. Summaries save time for other editors and reduce the chances that your edit will be misunderstood. For some edits, an adequate summary may be quite brief.

The edit summary field looks like this:

Edit summary (Briefly describe your changes)

Please provide an edit summary for every edit you make. With a Wikipedia account you can give yourself a reminder to add an edit summary by setting Preferences → Editing → check Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary, and then click the "Save" button. Thanks! 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 21:57, 3 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright problem icon Your edit to 1945 Jos riots has been removed in whole or in part, as it appears to have added copyrighted material to Wikipedia without evidence of permission from the copyright holder. If you are the copyright holder, please read Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials for more information on uploading your material to Wikipedia. For legal reasons, Wikipedia cannot accept copyrighted material, including text or images from print publications or from other websites, without an appropriate and verifiable license. All such contributions will be deleted. You may use external websites or publications as a source of information, but not as a source of content, such as sentences or images—you must write using your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously, and persistent violators of our copyright policy will be blocked from editing. See Wikipedia:Copying text from other sources for more information. — Diannaa (talk) 13:16, 8 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia and copyright[edit]

Control copyright icon Hello Totsmeimme! Your additions to Igbo people have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Please see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, please ask them here on this page, or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 12:56, 5 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

can you tell me what picture i posted that was copyrighted? because all of it is public, all the photos i added recently were taken almost 100 years ago Totsmeimme (talk) 18:16, 5 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
My message is not about a picture. It's about some text you copied from this website. Adding copyright prose is a violation of our copyright polciy. — Diannaa (talk) 20:26, 5 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
oh ok, sorry about that Totsmeimme (talk) 02:19, 6 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
{{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~} {{unblock|reason=Your reason here I am not a sock poppet page, i'm sorry if i broke any rules, but can you please unblock me? I havent been IP blocked, or doing anything wrong, can you please do a thuruough check on my page?}} Totsmeimme (talk) 23:56, 23 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Further copyright material has been removed from this draft. Diannaa may wish to advise you further over this.
It is disingenuous to have copyrighted material in this draft after your long discussion with them. "oh ok, sorry about that" does not show that you understand the importance of the theft copyrighted material. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 07:56, 12 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation link notification for August 8[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited 1953 Kano riot, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Kano, Hausa and Igbo. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 06:04, 8 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Copying within Wikipedia requires attribution[edit]

Information icon Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved text from Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons controversy into Onitsha 2006 Crisis. While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content, here or elsewhere, Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When copying within Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've copied content, disclosing the copying and linking to the copied page, e.g., copied content from [[page name]]; see that page's history for attribution. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted {{copied}} template on the talk pages of the source and destination. Please provide attribution for this duplication if it has not already been supplied by another editor, and if you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, you should provide attribution for that also. You can read more about the procedure and the reasons at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 14:11, 11 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, this is Totsmeimme, and i was currently blocked, if i believe was for a page i tried to create, which was 1966 Anti-Igbo Pogrom Retaliation, every content, and link of this page i wanted to create was found on the original page of 1966 Anti-Igbo Pogrom. I wanted to create a separate page for the retaliation that happened, matter fact the retaliation, is literally written ,in the original 1966 Anti-Igbo Pogrom. Yet i had multiple problems, while trying to create the page. But i was also editing, and making a lot of wikipedia pages, because i am super interested in Nigerian, and African history, and i feel like it is under-represented on wikipedia. So i often overlooked, some content on the 1966 Anti-Igbo Pogrom Retaliation, page that might've been copyrighted. I apologize, and completely understand it was my fault, can you please give me another chance. This is not a sock poppet, or a troll, account, i'm a very sincere person, please! And thank you! If you succeed in being unblocked, please explain why you think several references were removed. Sorry, but you don't seem to understand our policy and guidelines about sources. In particular, why do you think [1] could ever be a reliable source? Doug Weller talk 16:03, 6 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
