Administrators' newsletter – September 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

Technical news

Arbitration

  • The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged to note when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful.

Miscellaneous

  • Tech tip: The "Browse history interactively" banner shown at the top of Special:Diff can be used to easily look through a history, assemble composite diffs, or find out what archive something wound up in.

Administrators' newsletter – September 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • An RfC is open regarding amending the paid-contribution disclosure policy to add the following text: Any administrator soliciting clients for paid Wikipedia-related consulting or advising services not covered by other paid-contribution rules must disclose all clients on their userpage.

Technical news

  • Administrators can now choose to add the user's user page to their watchlist when changing the usergroups for a user. This works both via Special:UserRights and via the API. (T272294)

  • Eligible editors are invited to self-nominate themselves from 12 November 2023 until 21 November 2023 to stand in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections.
  • Xaosflux, RoySmith and Cyberpower678 have been appointed to the Electoral Commission for the 2023 Arbitration Committee Elections. BusterD is the reserve commissioner.

  • Following a motion, remedy 6 (One-revert rule) of the The Troubles case has been amended.
  • An arbitration case named Industrial agriculture has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case close 8 November.

PearBOT template cache seems to have been down since March 2022

I was trying to use it at Comparison of browser synchronizers, to avoid memory errors from loading too much data from Wikidata. * Pppery * it has begun... 22:31, 4 October 2023 (UTC)

Reposted from archive. Although that page has been deleted (in part because not being able to fix the Lua error that way made me look more closely at the page and realize it was crap), it would still be nice to get that bot running again. * Pppery * it has begun... 05:32, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the notice @Pppery! I managed to login to toolforge for the first time in over a year and get it running. I also performed the toolforge kubernetes migration which may cause issues with scheduling in the coming days if I messed it up. All of the above also applies to the job removing infobox requests on pages with an infobox. --Trialpears (talk) 06:23, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
I've tried to use it at Template:Latest stable software release/Google Chrome/sandbox (which I know is badly named) and the bot doesn't seem to want to update it. * Pppery * it has begun... 19:24, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
Updating dependacies broke it if there wasn't a timestamp. Now fixed. --Trialpears (talk) 20:55, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
Minor issue, but the documentation says If the updated line is not desired it can be noincluded using |noupdated=yes, yet I tried that in the above example (which I've reworked and moved to Template:Chrome cached versions) and it didn't work. The idea was to use it on Comparison of web browsers to avoid Lua memory errors, and I guess I don't actually need |noupdated= since the updated timestamp is in noinclude tags, but still ... * Pppery * it has begun... 21:06, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
I think that was intentional. Since it never should be used on a reader facing page and only on subpages or templates I decided to noinclude it since that information probably is relevant if you're looking at the subpage or template. I have updated the documentation to make it clear what it's doing. --Trialpears (talk) 22:26, 10 November 2023 (UTC)

Why did the bot produce a blank subst here? Yes, I verified substing the template manually works. * Pppery * it has begun... 00:10, 11 November 2023 (UTC)

Either because there was an extra space in the "Template cache top" comment or because this is some of the worst code I've seen, depending on your philosophy. Now you can have whitespace in the comments and it's case insensitive, so it's at least slightly more robust. --Trialpears (talk) 00:48, 11 November 2023 (UTC)

TfD Closure

Hi! I'm looking at your recent TfD closure, and I noticed that you closed it as a speedy deletion per G7. But, the template was moved twice by its creator during the discussion; the G7 only appears to apply to the redirect that was left over. Are you willing to re-open the discussion, since the G7 only appears to apply to a specific redirect rather than the actual template that was nominated for deletion? — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 18:13, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

@Red-tailed hawk It was not my intention to only delete the redirect and all pages were CSD eligible. Apparently XfD closer doesn't handle pages being moved during a discussion properly even though it warns that both the origin and target will be deleted. Probably because of the double redirect. I have now deleted all three pages (and associated documentation). Do you still want the discussion to be reopened? I'm open to it if you believe there is a case for keeping the template, but I don't believe it's productive to reopen a discussion where noone including the creator thinks it should be kept. --Trialpears (talk) 18:59, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
Hi! Just to close the loop on this, I'm satisfied with having everything deleted. No need to re-open that I see. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 02:51, 17 November 2023 (UTC)

ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:52, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
