Substing help needed

Hi, Trialpears. I wonder if you have time to look at a substing problem I'm having with a template. The template is {{WikiProject talk other}}, but the version I'm working on is in the sandbox.

In brief, this is a template that attempts to solve the problem that {{WikiProject}} templates are not allowed in Draft space, because they would categorize a Draft inaccurately. So, I created a template that takes project names as args (up to ten of them) and if in Talk space, invokes {{WikiProject}}, but in any other namespace, simply lists the project name as a bullet item linked to the WikiProject page.

This was, and is, working just fine; but the last piece of the puzzle is not working. The trick is, it displays the WikiProjects correctly in Draft talk as bullets, and correctly in Talk space as WikiProjects, but that doesn't leave you any way to add |class=, |importance=, and so on in Talk space. So my idea was, after moving the Draft to mainspace, you would then do one last step, which is to change the invocation from {{WikiProject talk other}} to {{subst:WikiProject talk other}}, and that would recognize that it's on a Talk page, substitute the calls to {tl|WikiProject}}, and save them that way, which could then be edited the next time, to add class, importance, and so on. But that's not what it does; instead, it substitutes the bullet items (and leaves some hidden text delimiters which I thought are supposed to be removed because they're enclosed in <noinclude>s, according to WP:SUBSTALLOW).

To see this template working, you can try adding {{WikiProject talk other/sandbox|Asia|Cities|India}} to any Draft talk page and preview it; it should show a bullet list. Then, place the same thing on any Talk (Talk) page, and do the same thing, and you'll see the Projects, including proper categorization at the bottom. The final step is: how do I get to "keep" those projects you see, by adding 'subst:' right after the opening curlies, but if you preview it (you don't even have to save it) you can see that with 'subst:' in there, it switches back to the bulleted links version. So, I'm kind of flummoxed.

While I was writing to you, I actually just thought of a better solution, which doesn't involve having a new template at all. Rather, we can just fix {{WikiProject}} so it only categorizes from Talk space (and that's simple, with {{Talk other}}) and I don't know why I didn't think of this earlier, but I didn't. Anyway, I'll probably go ahead and do that as the most logical approach to solve my initial problem, but I'm still left with the incomprehension about why the new template isn't working the way I expect. If you decide to look at the new template and need a "real" Draft to move to Main space so you can try "substing" the transclusion from Talk space, you can play with Draft:Chindepalle. It's a real Draft and could possibly become a real article one day, but I created it as a test bed to try to thrash out the question of what's happening when I subst the sandbox version of the template after moving it to main space. So, if you feel like looking into this, feel free to play with Chindipalle, and move it back and forth if you want (no redirects, please). Also, there's an older version, pre-subst, that's much easier to read, so if you're looking, you might want to start with rev. 1039501252‎; that's right before the substing was added, and also does what it's supposed to both in and out of Talk space, but has the initial problem of not being modifiable for class and importance. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 06:12, 19 August 2021 (UTC)

Hello @Mathglot! I'm currently quite tired and busy, but will hopefully be able to give a full answer in the next few days. I believe I've solved the main problem in the sandbox by introducing some more safesubsts, but the wikitext needs some clean up. I am quite sceptical of how useful this actually is though and believe in your second solution much more. --Trialpears (talk) 23:01, 19 August 2021 (UTC)
Oh, hi; look, there's no rush, why don't you just rest up, and take care of RL; this can wait, it's by no means urgent. I'll look into the second solution; my question was more about just understanding what's happening, so I can ramp up my knowledge for next time I hit something similar. Please leave it for now, and rest up... Zzzzz... Mathglot (talk) 23:06, 19 August 2021 (UTC)

Archives box for manual archiving

Thank you, Trialpears, for the slight cleanup edit to {{Archives}} on my user page. As you can see, the box I placed there is mainly for display/access to a manual archive, completely separate from the automatic archiving setup on my Talk page. I'm not sure why I left so much space preceding the equal sign =, other than I forgot to trim it down when I removed most of the parameters unnecessary for how I was using it... except for |auto=long, which you caught.

The space between the vertical bar | and the parameter shouldn't have made a difference (per {{Cite web}} and similar), but it brought you to my user page, so I am intrigued now. As you are handling the {{Archives}} project, you would be most aware—what was it doing wrong/not doing?
No complaint, just curious. — CJDOS, Sheridan, OR (talk) 02:25, 13 August 2021 (UTC)

CJDOS, you weren't doing anything wrong! I was just preparing for removing {{Archives}} most confusing "feature". Usually, if no manual list is given the template tries generating an automated one. If a list is given however it doesn't generate an automated one. If you want both you would have to use |auto=long or similar like you did on your page. But as you may have noticed on your page, it only used your manual list even though you were telling it to add an automated list as well. That's because you couldn't have both an automatic list and use |list=, you would have to put the manual list in the first unnamed parameter instead which is super confusing as they supposedly do the same thing. To be able to remove this "feature" I went through the 20ish pages that would be affected, yours included and changed it to make sure it works as intended after the change.
All in all your page doesn't change but the template becomes slightly less confusing. --Trialpears (talk) 06:40, 13 August 2021 (UTC)
Would you believe that I just received this ping notification a few minutes ago? I already saw your reply previously, but the notification system seems to be having issues. While logged into Wikipedia, I was on Meta Wikimedia, and the interwiki notification system seemed to be working fine, delivering messages in a timely manner. I checked your talk page history, but didn't see anything that might have re-triggered the notification. Weird, huh? I make it a point to mark notifications as read before I actually read them, usually because I'm doing something else at that moment. — CJDOS, Sheridan, OR (talk) 09:07, 20 August 2021 (UTC)

Question from FrancOV19 (03:27, 21 August 2021)

Is my talk page public, partially public or private? And how could I change any of that or truly delete all or some of it?

Also how do I reply to a message I received? --FrancOV19 (talk) 03:27, 21 August 2021 (UTC)

@FrancOV19: your talk page is public, and anyone can see messages posted there. You can edit the page to remove messages - but they will remain in the page's history. Messages will not be truly deleted unless they meet the criteria for redaction - which the vast majority will not (basically, if someone doxxes you or vandalizes your page, that would be deleted - but old conversations will not be).
As for replying, I suggest you look at WP:TALKREPLY, which has instructions for that. I'd also suggest making sure to ping users you reply to - the page I linked explains that in the next section. Elli (talk | contribs) 03:32, 21 August 2021 (UTC)
@Elli:Thank you for the answer. And once I don't have any other questions, would it be better for me to delete do this section or to leave it. Also is it better to reply that I have read the messages or not? --FrancOV19 (talk) 03:53, 21 August 2021 (UTC)
@FrancOV19: given that this isn't your talkpage - it's someone else's - I wouldn't delete the section. If a section on your talkpage isn't doing you any good any more, feel fine to remove it.
Replying to say you've read messages is fine but might annoy some people - certainly not necessary. Elli (talk | contribs) 04:10, 21 August 2021 (UTC)

bot=PearBOT 5 short descriptions removal after editing

i have removed bot=PearBOT 5 after editing it. is it acceptable? btw, bot seems to be not using {{Short description|description}}, however it is using {{short description|description}}. i may be paranoid. thank you for providing short descriptions. 28july21 (talk) 08:55, 23 August 2021 (UTC)

@28july21 That's completely alright and was the original plan to allow for review. It then stopped being added to new description, partly because it was seen as unnecessary and partly because it was unclear to handle it. I didn't consider the case of "short description" but can absolutely change it to uppercase if I do more. --Trialpears (talk) 20:53, 23 August 2021 (UTC)

Secondary nested archive subpage

Wait a minute, Trialpears; something's changed. I just went to reference a previous discussion in my talk archives, /Archive 1, and found several discussions missing. Looking at my talk page's history, I discovered that a second archive, /Archives/ 1, had been created without my knowledge nor consent. I don't like this change, and prefer just one subpage nested, not two. Please correct the archiver while I manually move the discussions to my archive page. Thank you. — CJDOS, Sheridan, OR (talk) 09:12, 31 August 2021 (UTC)

@CJDOS Looks like this edit was responsible. No idea why the bot would behave like that but User:ClueBot III/ArchiveThis mentions issues with magic words in the documentation. Just another thing I'll add to the fix list when I start work on a new bot. --Trialpears (talk) 09:29, 31 August 2021 (UTC)
Thank you for the heads-up. The date of that edit matches with the conversations that were included in the new archive page. I was unaware of such weird bot behavior, and have temporarily deactivated automatic archiving. As a precaution against unwanted page creation, I will manually archive for a little while, though I don't have any active discussions that aren't pinned at this time. — CJDOS, Sheridan, OR (talk) 09:43, 31 August 2021 (UTC)
What about the __NOINDEX__ magic word? I had added it to the archive page about a week prior. It's my understanding that it should only deter search engine crawls, not archivers. — CJDOS, Sheridan, OR (talk) 09:48, 31 August 2021 (UTC)
Indeed, it shouldn't have any impact on the archive bot. --Trialpears (talk) 10:44, 31 August 2021 (UTC)

@Frietjes I'm aware those are help boxes, but they do have the sidebar class. The sidebar class is exclude in print when in mainspace through MediaWiki:Print.css. I don't know how much effort should be put into making non-articles slightly nicer to print though, especially when no one seems to have cared about Category:Exclude in print not working at all for many years. It is an easy fix to noprint helpboxes though which I can do when I get back to a computer. --Trialpears (talk) 21:29, 8 September 2021 (UTC)

Archive notice bot removal

Hey there. Is this the intended behavior? The bot's edit causes the archive info to disappear entirely rather than be integrated into the talk header template, apparently because I had set |noarchive= (I don't know why—it's been years since I've thought about the templates on my talk page...). I've fixed things now, but it was unexpected. — The Earwig (talk) 03:04, 9 September 2021 (UTC)

@The Earwig Nope, definitely not intended. I simply missed that parameter and it wasn't on any of the couple hundred pages in the beginning (it is very rarely used for article talk pages). It is now fixed on all pages where it occurred. --Trialpears (talk) 06:58, 9 September 2021 (UTC)

Hi. I hope you are doing well.
Following up from Primefac's talkpage: Very long time ago, I wanted to update the documentation/module for the old move(s) template. Basically, I was thinking about trying to eliminate the issues that you are currently coming across. It is, like you said, basically a blank slate. I was thinking about adding sort of strict/concrete parameters into the template. Maybe we should do that first before the merger? Kindly let me know what you think. —usernamekiran (talk) 15:59, 18 September 2021 (UTC)

@Ims yrs You can create a user page where you can write anything appropriate and Wikipedia related at User:Ims yrs (just click edit on that page). If you are talking about an article about yourself I should note that writing an autobiography is strongly discourage and most people do not satsify the Wikipedia inclusion criteria. You can read more about that at Wikipedia:Autobiography. --Trialpears (talk) 17:14, 23 September 2021 (UTC)

how to remove the heading..i want only the name but it is showing user:santoshnaik21 --Santhosh Naik21 (talk) 17:57, 27 September 2021 (UTC)

Hi Santhosh Naik! It looks like you're trying to make an autobiography which is strongly discouraged, which you can read more about at Wikipedia:Autobiography. Removing the prefix would make your userpage look like an article which it isn't. My recommendation would be to not make an autobiography and hope someone else makes an article if or when you have several independent and reliable sources having significant coverage of you. --Trialpears (talk) 11:51, 29 September 2021 (UTC)

Duplicate parameters

FYI, this is not helping. Frietjes (talk) 19:57, 29 September 2021 (UTC)

Oh god, it's running!?!? I had some issues with PAWS not displaying any text output including testing information and interrupts on my laptop with my not fully tested version that didn't skip as aggressivly and planned to deal with the testing when I was home. Thanks for telling me! --Trialpears (talk) 20:06, 29 September 2021 (UTC)

LOC templates

Hi Trialpears, I'm not sure if you're still working on converting LOC templates but I'd urge you to be careful with edits like this, unless you have verified where the content actually comes from. For the foreign relations articles especially, it might be that the Chad-Libya section was pasted from the Libya country study and not the Chad country study, despite the article overall being centered on Chad. Thanks! By the way, if you want to help with a broader effort to add FNs to the LOC country studies (to replace the dumb generic notices), I have a worklist here and am always looking for collaborators! Happy editing! Calliopejen1 (talk) 15:42, 29 September 2021 (UTC)

And to follow up, on further investigation based on the content of the article when {{LOC}} was added and the dates of the various country studies, it's only the Chad CS that would apply in this case... but still, the suggestion to be careful applies as a general matter. :) Calliopejen1 (talk) 15:52, 29 September 2021 (UTC)
@Calliopejen1 Oh, forgot to answer, but you're absolutley correct. I should have been more careful and will be so if I return to helping out with that merger. I doubt that will happen though, I have quite a lot going on IRL. Thanks for doing the work! --Trialpears (talk) 21:41, 30 September 2021 (UTC)

Hi, I'm a newcomer here. Please guide me to start with this and make Wikipedia more better. --FarhanMurtazaQureshiPakistan (talk) 12:56, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

@FarhanMurtazaQureshiPakistan Welcome to Wikipedia Farhan! Wikipedia has lots of places that could uses your help, such as articles needing expansion or additional sources. For a list of some other areas in neeed of help you could check out Wikipedia:Task Center. Personally I would recommend just looking at some articles about a topic you're interested in and noticing possible areas for improvement with them. It looks like you've tried out this approach already, which is great! Just two things that could be good to consider in the future: On Wikipedia we want sources for our content so people can verify what the articles says is accurate. This can be quite tricky but, Help:Referencing for beginners is a page that explains how to do it quite well. It can also be good to give an edit summary to explain why you make an edit, especially when you remove content which isn't obviously problematic. If you wish to read some more about contributing there's Help:Introduction to Wikipedia which contains a bunch of useful information.
Finally if you have any more questions or want me to elaborate on something I'm happy to help! Happy editing! --Trialpears (talk) 00:50, 8 December 2021 (UTC)
