circular reference Deepwater Horizon oil spill

Would you mind replace the reference you removed from the lead of Deepwater Horizon oil spill. That particular sentance has been the focus of a great deal of controversy, and I wanted to make it as clear as possible where those numbers are coming from (a summary of all the estimates detailed in Deepwater_Horizon_oil_spill#Spill_flow_rate). The reference isn't even that cicular, it is the lead referecing a subsection. I know that it isn't standard and proper to do so, but I really wanted to WP:Ignore all rules and have that in there until things calm down on this article.

By having that reference in there, I think it will stop people from going back and forth in a circle fighting about it that sentance, and productively moving forward with the expansion and refinement of this article.

Just thought I'd drop by and say hi since it's been a while since we last spoke (about inglorious backlogs if I recall! Zzzzz). While I'm here (see how I worked that in? ;) ), I don't suppose I could tempt you into a second attempt at RfA? Looking at #1, it was over 4 months ago and 44/17/8 ain't bad. I could do with a hand dealing with those oft overlooked admin areas (you'd be surprised how often the editprotected category backs up, for example). Just a thought... That is just the sort of message that makes me want to snort derisively at my non-wiki backlogs and redouble my efforts here - thank you for that!

As for a response, I have good news and bad news. The good news is that, when the time is right, I do believe I will try again. The bad news is that my coach made me agree not to allow anyone else to nominate me. Yes, after our inglourious (am I over Britishising this?) conversation I took a long look at my RfA's vague reference to "backlogs" and realized that if I'm going to do try again, it would be a lot easier if I had some demonstrable experience rather than just enthusiasm. Fastily has a particular interest in coaching editors on the subtleties of images, one of the granddaddies of backlogs, and has been kind enough to take me on. I know that admin coaching isn't always in favor, but since it's pretty clear that Fastily's style doesn't help game the system, the potential downside is well worth the knowledge I'm gaining. (In fact, I've been using a surprising amount of this information off-wiki, so it's a win for me regardless of outcome.)

So yes, at some point I hope to seek the mop again. I'm very pleased that you support the idea! Feel free to stalk my coaching or otherwise be supportive. ;) --~T P W 03:30, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

Ah, well I'd rather Fastily teach you about the file namespace than me. I have minimal knowledge there (and everything I know, I got from Fastily!) and the sheer size of some of the backlogs is enough to make anyone run away screaming so I stick to zapping the odd copyvio as it crosses my path. Let me know when you're feeling masochistic and send you an email with all my trick RfA questions (I have at least on that gets everyone!) to see how many times I can trip you up ;). I shall certainly stalk your coaching, or at least lurk in the background pretending I know what Fastily's talking about! I've always found CSD to be a tricky area overall and would probably defer to another admin rather than decline until I felt confident. This example shows me that evaluating based on the criterion offered isn't enough. Can't delete it under A7, but it must be deleted under G10. Had my RfA been ten days ago I almost certainly would have gotten it wrong because I would have looked at it too narrowly.--~T P W 14:05, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

Indeed. Many people think that's quite a petty thing to oppose over, but that's one of a very small number of things that will prompt me to write "strong oppose" (or, in the last case, "strongest possible oppose", but there were other issues there). I prod articles only very rarely and don't know the back end of that process at all. I suppose you can simply remove the tag as easily as any editor, and that you're expected to exercise reasonable judgment to keep poorly-prodded articles from deletion. That's about right. I send some to AfD, usually because the PROD was contested and then restored, but some stuff really needs a speedy tag on it. I don't deal with A7, but I delete a fair few likely candidates as expired PRODs, then you get the odd negative BLP (followed up by a stern note on the tagger's talk page), copyvio, some spam makes it through. Around 80% of it though is crap, but not speediable, you just have to be careful to zap the stuff that needs zapping, because if you delete it via PROD, it can be restored on request. Fairly closing AfDs is, in my estimation, the best example of what an admin should be doing. The fact that some of the opposers considered me "too deletionist" really stung me, because I believe myself to be balanced in my approach. However, my recent history at the time didn't bear that out, and I have tried to be more cautious in recommending deletion since. Improving the encyclopedia is a balancing act between cutting the crap and using the crap as fertilizer . . . I don't think we need more admins that are viewed as "inclusionist" or "deletionist," and I think the community agrees. Being able to see both sides of an issue and knowing the difference between one's opinion and community consensus is really, really important.--~T P W 14:48, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

I don't get involved in the whole inclusionist vs. deletionist war, I just weigh up the argument in accordance with WP:ATA and the relevant policies. I tend to be slightly more delete happy when it comes to crappy BLPs, but I don't close that many- soemone else usually beats me to it. GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive Wrap-up

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated in the drive! Over 100 editors—including Jimbo Wales—signed up this time (nearly triple the participants of the May drive). This benefited the Guild as well as the articles in need of copy editing. You can see from the comparison graphs that we increased the number of completed copyedits substantially. Unfortunately, we were not able to meet our goal of completely wiping out 2008 from the queue. We also were not able to reduce the backlog to less than 6,000 articles. We suspect people were busy with real life summertime things, at least in the northern hemisphere! We were able to remove the months of January, February, March, April, and May from the backlog, and we almost wiped out the month of June. We reduced the backlog by 1,289 articles (17%), so all in all it was a very successful drive, and we will be holding another event soon. We'll come up with some new ideas to try to keep things fresh and interesting. Keep up the good work, everybody!

November 2010 backlog elimination drive update

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!

Discussions are underway to elect our inaugural group of GOCE Coordinators. Guild members and Drive participants are invited to have a look at the Coordinators page and join the discussion on its associated talk page.

We have reached the midway point in our backlog elimination drive, so here is an update.

Participation report — The November drive has 53 participants at this point. We had 77 participants in the September drive. In July, 95 people signed up for the drive, and in May we had 36. If you are not participating, it is not too late to join!

Progress report — The drive is quite successful so far, as we have already almost reached our target of a 10% reduction in the number of articles in the backlog. We are doing very well at keeping our Requests page clear, as those articles count double for word count for this drive.

Please keep in mind the possibility of removing other tags when you are finished with an article. If the article no longer needs {{cleanup}}, {{wikify}}, or other similar maintenance tags, please remove them, as this will make the tasks of other WikiProjects easier to complete. November 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive Conclusion

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!

We have reached the end of our fourth backlog elimination drive. Thanks to all who participated.

Stats

58 people signed up for this drive. Of these, 48 people participated in the drive.
Although we did not eliminate the months we planned to (January, February, and March 2009; and August, September, and October 2010), we did reduce the backlog by 627 articles (11.2%), which was over our goal of 10%.
49 awards will go out to 33 of 48 participants. Check out the complete list of barnstar winners here.

Barnstars

If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you participated in the September 2010 backlog elimination drive, you may have earned roll-over words (more details can be found here). These roll-over words count as credit towards earning barnstars, except for leaderboard awards. We will be delivering these barnstars within the next couple of weeks.

Our next drive is scheduled for January 2011. In the meantime, please consider helping out at the Wikification drive or any of the other places where help with backlogs is needed.

Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 backlog elimination drive

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! The drive is halfway over, so here are some mid-drive stats.

Participation

So far, 43 people have signed up for this drive. Of these, 25 have participated. If you signed up for the drive but haven't participated yet, it's not too late! Try to copy edit at least a few articles. Remember, if you have rollover words from the last drive, you will lose them if you do not participate in this drive. If you haven't signed up for the drive yet, you can sign up now.

Progress report

We have eliminated two months from the backlog – January and February 2009. One of our goals is to eliminate as many months as possible from the 2009 backlog. Please help us reduce the size of this part of the backlog if you haven't already. Another goal is to reduce the entire backlog by 10%, or by 515 articles. Currently, we have eliminated 375 articles from the queue, so if each participant copy edits four more articles, we will reach that goal.

Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive

Greetings from the January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! We have reached the end of the month and the end of another successful drive; thanks to all who participated.

Statistics

54 people signed up for the year's first Backlog elimination drive. Of these, 40 participated.
One of our goals was to reduce the size of the backlog by at least 10%. We managed to reduce the backlog by 633 articles, or about 12%.
Another goal was to eliminate as many 2009 months as possible from the queue. We eliminated January, February, March, and April—4 out of 12 months is not bad! In addition, we eliminated 37% of all remaining 2009 articles from the queue.
Chaosdruid copy edited Kutch Gurjar Kashtriya for 32,711 words, which is the largest single article completed in one of our drives so far. This article counts as six 5000-K articles, and Chaosdruid wins the "most 5000-K articles" leaderboard category. Way to go! A complete list of individual results is here.

Barnstars

We are appealing to all GOCE members, and any other editors who wish to participate, to come and help us reduce the number of articles needing copyediting, as well as the backlog of requests. GOCE Newsletter

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive! We have now passed the halfway point, so here's an update.

Progress Report - Progress toward the targets has been good. 751 articles out of the approximately 1,600 we would like to get completed by the end of the month were done by July 15, so we will be very close to meeting the target for volume. However, we would like to clear all of the 2008 articles from the backlog, and there are still 892 left to do. Please consider choosing one of these older articles when looking for something to copy edit. If we focus our firepower we can completely wipe out 2008 from the queue.

Participation Report - 95 people signed up for the July drive. This is a great result compared to May, when we had 36. However, in May only one person that signed up didn't do any copy edits, and in July only 59 of the 95 have posted any copy edits on the big board.

The task may seem insurmountable but please remember that if all 95 participants copy edit just one article a day from now until the end of the month, we will eliminate 1,300 more articles from the backlog. So please consider participating at whatever level you can! All contributions are appreciated.

Background

• I am asking you to participate in a research project that is part of my MA degree.

• I am asking you because you have created a user page in Wikipedia that other people can use to learn about you.

Purpose

• My research is about how people present themselves online.

• I will look at how people present themselves when presenting themselves to the Wikipedia community.

Study Procedures

• With your consent, I will analyze the language of your user page and gather basic statistics such as the count of words, the frequency of words, the number of sections, and so on.

• I will also read the text of your user page, looking for elements in common with ads posted by other people. I will note whether you include a picture, or links to other content on the internet.

• I ask you to answer my five questions, above. This will take about ten to fifteen minutes to complete. I will ask you to answer the questions within a week, and send your answers to me.

• Throughout my research, I will adhere to the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of Human Research Participants, which you can view at http://www.uofaweb.ualberta.ca/gfcpolicymanual/policymanualsection66.cfm

Benefits

• There is no direct benefit to you for participating in this research. You may, however, find it interesting to read my perspective on how you present yourself online.

Thanks for your advice, I wasn't aware people didn't know everyone thinks bananas are fruits, and the fact that they are herbs is sourced in the article. I'll look into it and resubmit.

Hudson Valley

If the anon really wishes to do this right, they'll actually create the AfD instead of just putting the tag on. And if they do, I suspect it will be speedy keep as the shortage of references isn't a reason to delete the article (No, we're not the German Wikipedia) and I think plenty of people who contribute to an AfD will see that.

I also wonder if this is some sort of disruptive nomination by a sock of someone who's upset that some article dear to their hearts got deleted for that sort of reason. I'll just give him the chance to actually finish starting the AfD ... you'd think that huge redlink in the middle of the tag would blink when the actual AfD hasn't been created. If he hasn't done it within, say, 24 hours, we can take the tag off.

I've done some further digging and it looks like Usnetizen is a bit ticked about having an addition to Lehigh Valley reverted. So he's trying to prove a point. I tweaked the settings somewhat. Someone had changed it to archive after three days, but only if at least 50 threads met that criterion. I set it back to a minimum threads to archive of two. Should clear on the jam fully tomorrow.

The community wishes to keep it, so if I can find ways to improve it I will. I don't bear grudges against articles which aren't deleted, though; it's entirely possible that in time it will become notable.--~T P W 20:15, 10 October 2011 (UTC)

Of course it's 'entirely possible' it will become notable, but we both know it's extremely unlikely - that was the point you started the deletion discussion in the first place, was it not? I think that we have a process, and in this case the consensus was that the article should be kept. I won't nominate it again myself, but if I find that someone else has I would probably weigh in. I don't get to decide that all by myself, so I'll just focus on improving the articles I can and not worrying too much about the ones that I feel should be deleted but aren't. The process usually favors keeping over deleting, and I see nothing wrong with being extra-cautious in using the nuclear option.--~T P W 01:26, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

Sorry. What I meant is that deletion is the most extreme thing you can do to an article, so even when consensus seems to ignore policy entirely, as in this case, I respect the fact that there are quite a few editors who are extremely cautious about when to use it. I would much rather see an article kept against policy than deleted against policy, so in a case like this I am not likely to push for deletion again anytime soon.--~T P W 17:09, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

I didn't know that page existed (That's what I love about this place ... you can be here for years, and still there are new aspects of it that reveal themselves to you. I've always wanted to write a sort-of related essay along the lines of "The real world is not Wikipedia" for people who apply Wikipedia policies to reliably-sourced documents (like the nominator here) and some other instances of not taking one's head out of the clouds I've come across. Dreadlocks

Recently, you removed an external link I had posted on the Dreadlocks page for DreadLife. After reading through the guidelines for posting external links, I can understand why this decision was made; however, I question one of the remaining links for Dreadlocks.org. Whereas Dreadlocks.org focuses mainly on salon maintained dreadlocks, DreadLife.com provides information, tutorials, pros and cons, maintenance, etc on several dreading methods to help maintain an unbiased source of information.
