Welcome[edit]

Hello Turborobdog and welcome to Wikipedia! We appreciate encyclopedic contributions, but some of your contributions, such as the ones to Bill Lyon, do not conform to our policies. For more information on this, see Wikipedia's policies on vandalism and limits on acceptable additions. If you'd like to experiment with the wiki's syntax, please do so in the sandbox rather than in articles.

If you still have questions, there is a new contributors' help page, or you can click here to ask for help on your talk page, and a volunteer should respond shortly. You may also find the following pages useful for a general introduction to Wikipedia.

I hope you enjoy editing and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. Feel free to write a note on the bottom of my talk page if you want to get in touch with me. Again, welcome! ❦Cans48☙ 00:21, 12 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

January 2017[edit]

Please do not introduce incorrect information into articles, as you did with this edit to Bill Lyon. Your edits appear to be vandalism and have been reverted. If you believe the information you added was correct, please cite references or sources or discuss the changes on the article's talk page before making them again. If you would like to experiment, use the sandbox. Thank you. Donner60 (talk) 03:49, 12 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The article you are changing is about Bill Lyon, an Australian rules footballer. You cannot just change an article to make it about an entirely different person. That is vandalism. Please stop. Wikipedia has many articles about people with the same name. Separate articles must be created. Hi Turborobdog. Please take a look at William Lyon to get a better idea as to what Donner60 is talking about. As you can see, there are currently 11 Wikipedia articles about individuals named William Lyon. So, if as I suspect none of these are about your father, then the thing to do would be either (1) create such an article yourself or (2) request that someone else do it for you per Wikipedia:requested articles. So, if you believe your father is notable enough for a stand-alone article per Wikipedia:Notability (people), then it is possible for an article to be written about him. Please take note that how Wikipedia defines notability and how it may commonly be defined by others tends to be quite different, and only those subjects which satisfy Wikipedia's various notability guidelines are considered suitable for a stand-alone article.
Also, since we are discussing your father, I think it would be a good idea for you to take a look at Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide. Wikipedia does not expressly prohibited people from creating articles about subjects they are closely connected to, but it is something that is highly discouraged because it can lead to all kinds of other problems. Moreover, having a Wikipedia article written about you or someone you are close to can have a downside as explained in Wikipedia's Law of Unintended Consequences and Wikipedia:An article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing. Wikipedia articles about individuals who are in the public eye, such as someone who ran for a major political office, often are targets for vandalism. There is also no real way to keep out any factual information (good or bad) which has can be verified by citations to reliable sources if the consensus is to include such information. In other words, neither the article creator nor the subject of the article has any final editorial control over the article content.
Anyway, there is a WikiProject called WikiProject Texas where editors interested in Texas related articles, etc. come together to discuss things. If you do decide to write an article about your father, it might be a good idea for you to ask for help at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Texas since someone there may be able to help you with the specifics and may actually know about your father. You can also ask more general editing questions at the Wikipedia Teahouse and someone there will be more than happy to help you out.-- Marchjuly (talk) 05:33, 12 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Turborobdog: More importantly, you should spend some time reading the pillars of Wikipedia - specifically on cordiality, being courteous, your tone, the way you say things- you know, courtesy before you begin intercourse with people on Wikipedia. Level C (talk) 11:47, 12 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
