Najeeb Halaby Photo[edit]

I noticed you recently added a photo to the Najeeb Halaby article. In your edit summary, you state that the photo may be used if AUB is credited, however, the copyright tag you used states that the copyright status is unknown. If you could clarify the photo's copyright status, it would be appreciated. --TommyBoy 06:20, 21 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image copyright problem with Image:Najeeb_Halaby.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Najeeb_Halaby.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

Qatar map[edit]

Can you tell me where you got the info from for the update to the Qatar map? Also, when you use someone's GFDL image, you must mention it in the description. If I update mine, would you mind if I deleted yours, since it would be redundant? --Golbez 09:17, 29 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Qatar Cities[edit]

Good work on creating articles on the cities. But please note that the infobox is made for GCC municipality rather than GCC cities, therefore not suitable. This also means the maps you included are not usable. The only maps that can be put should locate the city rather than the municipality the city is in. Major changes should be made, but the infobox should probably be replaced with a city oriented one. --Ahmed 10:33, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sahara Scout Association/Kun Musta'idan x20[edit]

I am replacing the information you removed, as not everyone is going to look in Be Prepared. In addition, most other Scout articles show their Scout mottoes in their national languages. Chris 00:04, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What's the point in duplicating exactly the same paragraph in 20 articles? Also, whoever cares what's the Arabic translation for "Be Prepared", will of course look in that article, and not in Sahraoui Scout Association.

And what's the point in providing the Arabic translation of the word "boyscout"? This is not a dictionary. --tyomitch 15:25, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A more constructive solution would be to move the paragraph to WOSM-Arab Region. The paragraph is equally relevant to all the members of the Region, and its article is already linked from all the members' articles. Is that good enough? --tyomitch 17:10, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have to disagree about putting it in the region article. Each association should have its own info. But I also agree a little variety would be good. I suggest leaving the info in the association articles and varying the text in each some.Rlevse 23:55, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Tyomitch, I truly appreciate your energy, but that suggestion is actually not "good enough". First, it goes against the format of the 160+ other national articles; second, the Scout Motto is not specific nor particularly pertainant to the Arab Scout Region; and third, the removals do not give the reader which languages or variants are used in that particular country. Please leave them as they are. Besides, there has been some discussion about dividing up or renaming Be Prepared, as it is too much a catchall to be of use to most. We very much appreciate your contributions, but unless you'd like to join the Wikipedia:WikiProject Scouting, we'd prefer to let those with some connection to the topic be the arbiters of what is noteworthy in each article. Now, if you _do_ want to add the Arabic to the Scout articles for Palestine and Syria, we would really appreciate your contribution (and thanks for the ones you did already, that's a lot of work). In thanks, Chris 01:53, 25 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright problems with Image:Raymond Chen, PDC05.jpg[edit]

An image that you uploaded, Image:Raymond Chen, PDC05.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Copyright problems because it is a suspected copyright violation. Please look there if you know that the image is legally usable on Wikipedia (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), and then provide the necessary information there and on its page, if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you.

I read your justification but it doesn't work. You don't make it clear where you got the picture from. If it's a still from Robert Scoble's PDC video then the section of the T&Cs you quote doesn't apply. He isn't a member of the public posting to the site, he's an MS employee (or was at the time of the posting). I can't find a copyright notice for the channel9 videos, but in the absence of such you have to assume you can't copy them. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.44.46.110 (talkcontribs) 21:03, 9 October 2006

  1. How can I tell that Scoble holds the copyright? there's no explicit statement of this. (Maybe he got the video from a third person which isn't/wasn't an MS employee?)
  2. How can I tell that Scoble was acting on behalf on Channel9 when posting the video? there's no explicit statement of this, either. (The fact that he works/worked for Channel9 doesn't automatically give them copyright to all his works.)
Due to the lack of these statements, we have to default to the "general public posting to Channel9" terms of use. --tyomitch 17:12, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You are wrong in law. Copyright exists irrespective of any explicit statement of ownership of copyright. You are not allowed to make a copy without the copyright owner's permission. Imagining a sequence of events in which you might have permission is not good enough. If you don't know you have permission, you don't have permission. Period.
Any anyway, if you look at the comments you'll see the Robert Scoble made the video. And as Raymond Chen points out on his blog, MS has a contract that assigns employee copyright to MS. So MS owns the copyright. 217.44.46.110 18:58, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Silverberg & Gates.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Silverberg & Gates.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Arabic[edit]

That issue is irrelevant since most people favored the ALA-LC version, which does not combine words. So `Abdu'r-rahman should be `Abd ar-rahman, etc. and the issue is avoided.

I recall that I did go read through an Arabic grammar book and responded with the reference. If you are dying to find out I could go scan it in and email it to you, but the issue is irrelevant now if we use ALA-LC. Cuñado - Talk 14:36, 11 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Silverberg & Gates.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. poll[edit]

FYI. I never changed the table in the middle of a poll. Someone else changed it, and I changed it back to the original. If you have a problem with the MOS then deal with it. I don't need to discuss every single edit prior to editing. In every single example I've ever seen of Arabic transliteration, the initial hamza is omitted, regardless of if there is a definite article. And when the short vowels are shown connecting words with the next definite article (unlike ALA-LC), the hamza is shown. I don't know why, but that is the pattern I've noticed, and I've been acting in good faith trying to improve the MOS in the face of a lot of opposition from people who don't seem to know what they're doing. In every case I've been trying to adhere to ALA-LC and the UN team for geographical names as standards, but at the same time create standards for wikipedia that people are willing to follow. If you think I'm wrong about the intial hamza then find examples of where it's transliterated. Otherwise piss off and stop attacking me. Cuñado - Talk 16:01, 21 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Pocket PC 2002.png)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Pocket PC 2002.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Fair Use images[edit]

are for critical commentary, not for things we haven't written about yet but could illustrate with some pictures. There was no discussion of the evolution of the GUI, so no claim to be made to use the images. ed g2stalk 19:50, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Technically Fair Use should not be used outside the article namespace at all, although that page is for development purposes it seems. One should probably crop out the GUI elements leaving just free images - but that is a separate issue. ed g2stalk 10:05, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unspecified source for Image:Winword 2003.png[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Winword 2003.png. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self-no-disclaimers}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 20:32, 26 February 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Ysangkok 20:32, 26 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Pocket_Internet_Explorer_3.png[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Pocket_Internet_Explorer_3.png. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Non-free use disputed for Image:Excel_2003.png[edit]

Warning sign This file may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Excel_2003.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. The Sunshine Man 08:48, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Windows screenshots[edit]

Is there any consensus and/or accepted guidelines telling that screenshots must display empty desktops with no applications running? --tyomitch 19:49, 12 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know. No offense, but I'd take a screenshot with an empty desktop over a screenshot with a very crowded desktop any day. If you can take a screenshot that's in between the one you uploaded and the one with an empty desktop, it would be nice. Maybe with a Windows Explorer window and the start menu open. Not too crowded, but illustrates the point. Just a suggestion. — Alex(U|C|E) 23:36, 12 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Theres no written rule anywhere. But thats the preferred shot. The desktop (with taskbar and optionally start menu) is what users see when the first boot windows and thus forms the identity of Windows. When it is cluttered with other windows, it forms a mix of the operating environment and other applications, and thus no longer represents "the Windows Operating Environment". As such, this is discouraged. Also, per fair use, if it has shots of other applications, it can only be used alongside discussion of *all* the applications, neither as the main screenshot of an OS article, nor alongside discussion of a subset of the running applications.
Also, a cluttered desktop is not very aesthetic. As such, unwritten consensus is with empty desktop. There has been lot of discussions, but unfortunately, none of them centralized but distributed across talk pages of various articles and users. --soum talk 06:24, 13 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well, when you are writing something in Notepad, you are using *Notepad* not *Windows*. True, Windows is working behind the scenes, but it is not *you* who are using Windows, rather the *application* is using the services provided by the operations to present *its own identity*. The *components of Windows* have their own identity, separate from the *identity of Windows*. Windows wont cease to exist if the applications are not run. And the applications *can* be ported to other OSs (legalities and politics aside). Their identities are their own, and as such not to be mixed up. True, without the applications that are *distributed* as part of Windows, the experience wouldnt be same. But they do not form the *idnentity*, they form the *experience*. Hope I didnt lose you in wordplay. :D
That aside, like I already said, per fair use when a screenshot has discrete components with their individual identities, it cannot be used to visually identify *any one* of them. It can only be used alongside discussion of *all of them together* (the exception is only when such screenshots cannot be made; like for an unreleased software). And a cluttered shot is not only not aesthetic to look at, discrete screenshots for each component provides much more detail. If they are tried to be crammed into one frame, it fails to show any one of them properly. Thats why things are tried to be kept as simple as possible. This applies to individual screenshots as well. We always try to present an uncustomized screen, without any generated content. If there is some specific feature that needs to be shown, we make a separate screenshot for them.
Btw, which screenshot are we talking about? --soum talk 06:59, 13 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The screenshot looks cluttered because of the windows. IMO, the clock with the start menu open (no nested menus, as there is nothing of note there) would be fine. Provided the clock is at least talked about in the article. Was it a part of default install? --soum talk 07:56, 13 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Secn break for easier editing[edit]

"The screenshot looks cluttered because of the windows."

Image:Windows_XP.PNG, used at the top of a FA, displays three windows (and no start menu btw). It's even used in a screenshot gallery at Luna (theme), is that acceptable fair-use? All my screenshot galleries were deleted under the claim that it isn't.
Case can be made for explorer, as it forms a very integral form of the shell. As such, under fair use, this image could be accepted. Except for the thumbnail of the lotus or whatever picture it is. MS has given us rights to use the image, not to relicense it under GFDL. Since the image isnt talked about, it is not covered by fair use either.
However, its not all policy. I personally would prefer an image with either the vanilla desktop or with at most one explorer window open. And I believe many others would too. However, displaying copyrighted images in a gallery or list is an absolute no-no, as that is merely decorative. --soum talk 09:51, 13 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"(no nested menus, as there is nothing of note there)"

The current version, the one people keep reverting to, displays exactly the same nested menus as mine.
Thats not because it is preferred, but because thats the closest alternative to what we want. If you can provide a better one, of course it will be kept.

"Provided the clock is at least talked about in the article."

Done --tyomitch 09:02, 13 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I am also seeing you are depressed because all of your screenshot uploads have been deleted. By checking the deletion log, most were deleted because they were either of out oof date versions (like beta versions) or had no justification of why it is suitable under fair use. Not because they weren't suitable. I sincerely hope these words can work as wiki-anti-depressants. :P --soum talk 09:51, 13 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
