You can view the discussion and my rationale for deletion here. Basically, Igbo female singers is a non-notable triple intersection of ethnicity (not nationally, I hope you will remember), gender and occupation. Unless they are a distinguishing characteristic (like Category:African American baseball players), these intersections are considered non-notable.--Thomas.macmillan (talk) 17:49, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

Hello again, Ukabia. I'd like to encourage you to join the discussion. Thomas.macmillan takes a very restrictive view of ethnic categories. I am generally much more supportive of such categories, but I'm reserving judgement on this one, and it would be good to have your input. Also, although it is strongly discouraged, Thomas has gone ahead and emptied the category (removed all of the articles) because there evidently was no mention of their Igbo ethnicity in the text of the articles. Categories should always be supported by material in the text. So it would be very helpful if you would make a point of adding a short passage to each article bearing out their ethnicity as Igbo -- hopefully with sourcing -- as well as restoring the deleted categories, so that I and other editors can evaluate the merits of this category on the basis of what its contents are. (And I strongly encourage you to make sure that all of the other articles in Igbo sub-cats include such info, too, as soon as you can do so.) Regards, Cgingold (talk) 13:19, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

I'd also encourage you to cite your sources in regards to ethnicity, especially if the person is living. Ethnicity can be extremely inflammatory and can be contentous, so we need to include a citation whenever we include ethnicity. Another issue I have is the placing of Igbo categories as if they are replacements for national ones; for example, say a person was born in Nigeria and is a musician. I find it misleading to put the person in a category like "Igbo musicians" and not their nationality, Nigerian musicians. If a source indicates that a person is Igbo, cite it, or do not mention it or otherwise include it in the article.--Thomas.macmillan (talk) 14:46, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

You cannot simply copy and paste an entire article, wiki-format it and call it a wikipedia article, even if you add a reference at the end. While going through Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe, I noticed that the tone seemed strange and I was looking for a reference to his ethnicity. When I opened up this site, reading through it I felt like I had read it before; I had, because you copied and pasted nearly the entire article on to his wiki biography. Please read Wikipedia:Copyright violations. I have seen that there is a conflict in the Igbo Origins section bro. I have also played a role in publicizing the Igbo/Egyptian/Nubian/Moorish connection and seen it been taken off.

If I may ask you, what makes the sources unreliable? What are reliable sources?

I notice that this category you created is unpopulated (empty). In other words, no Wikipedia pages belong to it. If it remains unpopulated for four days, it may be deleted, without discussion, in accordance with Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion#C1. I blanked the category page. This will not, in itself, cause the category to be deleted. It serves to document (in the page history) that the category was empty at the time of blanking and also to alert other watchers that the category is in jeopardy. Ikwerre and Igbo

See Talk:Ikwerre#Igbo_or_benin_empire_origin. I'm not very comfortable with simply believing this sort of claims without sources. I have found before people that replacing their tribe's real origin with a more respectable origin, (like replacing Hazara with Pashtun) insisting all the time in that it was all a mistake or an injustice, and later finding that the change is unsupported by sources when you investigate it. --Enric Naval (talk) 21:22, 4 April 2009 (UTC)

Virginia and page numbers

Almost a year ago I believe you added a note to the demographic section of the article on Virginia about the Igbo ancestry of many Virginians. You sourced two books, Gwendolyn Midlo Hall's Slavery and African Ethnicities in the Americas and Douglas B. Chambers' Murder At Montpelier. If you still have these works handy, I was wondering if you'd be able to find the page number relevant for Virginia. Specifically for the fact that many African Americans in Virginia were Igbo from the Niger Delta. A page number for either would work, we probably don't need both. I'd like to have this since I want to put Virginia up for Featured Article Candidate next week, and I should have all sources filled out. Category talk:Guineans of Igbo descent - Category Name Change to Equatoguineans of Igbo descent

There are three countries in Africa with Guinea as part of their name: 1) Equatorial Guinea, 2) Guinea-Bissau 3) Republic of Guinea. All three countries have distinctly different histories. There is also Papau New Guinea located in South Pacific. This category refers to Guineans of Igbo descent from Equatorial Guinea, thus should have the name Equatoguineans of Igbo descent to clear up any likely confusion. Recent edit to Virginia

Ukabia, you're recent edit to the article on Virginia makes the claim that Igbo are currently the largest ethnic group in the state. However, the source you link to only says that Igbo were the highest proportion of Africans in the 17th Century. I don't know of any recent study that breaks down the exact origin of African Americans, and I'd doubt that such a study could even be done. And there's been a lot of internal migration to say that all or even most modern Africans in Virginia are descendant from Virginia slaves. The numbers we use are from the Census, and any claim should be backed up by that. Further, I think there's a certain personal identity to ethnicity, and I'm not certain a plurality of modern Virginians would self-identify as Igbo. So while it may be true that they're the largest ethnic group, I don't think the article should make that claim without further evidence.-- Patrick {_oѺ^∞} 23:09, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

I guess I don't understand the sentence then. You're just trying to note that in the 1700's they were the largest African group? If that's the case, then I don't think we need the sentence, since the Demographics section is about contemporary statistics, and the way its written makes it sound like a contemporary claim. Even changing the "remained the largest" to "became the largest" might just be making it more confusing, and without a time period connected to the phrase it still sounds like you're claiming they currently are the largest, which we just don't have any evidence for. I think we can note the origin of slaves in Virgina in one sentence, and don't think we need a second sentence saying the same thing.-- Patrick {_oѺ^∞} 00:08, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
