Action Against Hunger Article

I saw from the revision that you have previously edited the External links in the Action Against Hunger wiki article. You deleted the UK site address claiming it was available from the 'main site'.

Action Against Hunger is part of the ACF International network and the various offices are equal partners in this - the US website is not the 'main website' but instead a subsidiary website representing only Action against Hunger in the US and not in the UK, France, Spain or Canada. (Each arm has its own organisation, communications department and message). If anything the French website would be the 'main' one since ACF is originally a French organisation - although that doesn't help since the dominant language for the wikipedia article is English.

I have therefore added the links to all 5 HQs in the ACF network since there isn't an umbrella website which links them all together.

The current wikipedia article concentrates very heavily on the US branch since it was written by an ex-volunteer, but actually the organisation is an International NGO.

Underwater Archaeology Branch page

ukexpat, I cannot thank you enough for helping me with my page. This is my first time using Wikipedia to write an article, and without your help I would be lost in the dark. Sorry I have not been putting summaries in, I will start doing that now. I'm trying to address the concerns from the DYK nominations. I have references from 5 different sources which are in print covering different projects UAB has conducted. I was hoping to do that reference thing which I'm sure you know how where you put the "ref name=" and then it creates a list at the end of all the sources related to that, but I can't seem to figure it out. Any help you can provide would be most welcome. Thanks again for making my experience with Wikipedia so welcoming and interesting. Leachers1987 (talk) 18:30, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:DominionColourLogo.png)

Thanks for uploading File:DominionColourLogo.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. AgRinceSocial Science Resarch on Greatness ready??

hello Ukexpat

i've had a go at trying to rework my article re 'social sci research on greatness' as per your suggestions when you moved it back to my User space (userfied it...)

here's my comments and your reply:

  • I wrote the article. It is not original research (or a college paper). i thought i referenced my sources. I have no doubt screwed this up, and would appreciate any advice re how to correct it, so that wiki will keep the article. AgRince (talk) 13:13, 5 March 2010 (UTC)
  • Comment: In that case, I think the best thing to do would be to move it back into your user space ("userfy" it) so that you can work on it further. You should also take a look at the tone, construction and flow of articles on similar topics to see how that are written and structure this article similarly. If you are OK with this approach I will happily move it back to user space for you and withdraw this Afd. – ukexpat (talk) 14:06, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

I'm writing now to ask you to have a quick glance at my rewrite and see if you think it is worth submitting it for consideration as a Wiki article again.

As you suggested, i looked at several articles on related topics, and then settled on one which most closely paralleled what i am trying to achieve re giving useful information in my article.

the model article i used is the wiki article on Multiple Intelligences

my article is now virtually the same length as the M Int article, and this despite the M Int article covering ~25 years of soc sci research while mine re Greatness covers over 100 years. I collapsed my summaries of major books into a few short paragraphs each. (eg Cox's is over 800 pages, Eysenck's is 350 and virtually inaccessible to the lay reader). I also referenced everything.

what i'm asking is simply do you think i'm now in a position to resubmit the article for inclusion in Wiki, or do i need to make it even shorter??

i hope this is an appropriate request.

Many thanks for whatever consideration you can give.

Feedback on The Activators Page

Thank you for reviewing my article on The Activators. However, I think that the page demonstrates notability through its articles listed under references. Kidscreen and Cynopsis: Kids are the biggest trade publications (think Hollywood Reporter and Variety) for children's entertainment brands. Global License is another international trade magazine. A brand cannot get published in these trades if they're not legitimate. Furthermore, the Delaware Gazette is the main daily newspaper serving Delaware, OH. Finally, Commonsense media is a large media watchdog website for parents (over 1 million visits per month). The Activators also recently appeared on XETV, the CW affiliate of San Diego. I didn't put the clip under the reference section because there's no direct link to the video, you have to go through a few steps to find it. Perhaps you can help make the link more easily accessible?

Search for "The Activators" in the small tab to the right next to the "category" box. [[1]]

Aside from this, The Activators have also been featured on numerous blogs which I did not include because the notability rules dismissed blog coverage.

Thank you again for your help and I look forward to your thoughts.

Best,

David

please move my finished draft into the active part of the site

Hi, I have spent much time entering references for my article on George Rabasa, and I have also created a User Page for myself. Of course I'll continue to update and refine the page once it goes live, but this truly presents solid, verifiable research. I appreciate the comments from users, and having used Wikipedia for many years specifically to find information on contemporary authors, I feel confident that my tone is in keeping with other citations. In fact, I used such citations as my model when writing. I have been a member for four days and I have made much more than ten edits. I'd appreciate your quick response. Many thanks.--James Cihlar (talk) 21:40, 12 March 2010 (UTC)

going live

Hi, Thanks so much for putting my article on George Rabasa up on the live site. I'm fine with continuing to revise it, as I've said, but I'd appreciate it if you would take down the "this article has issues" box. I disagree with the label "peacock terms" and the assessment that "this article reads like an advertisement." I'm a longtime editor and book reviewer, and I feel that what I am presenting as analytical comments are being dismissed as compliments. I understand the objectivity required in an encyclopedia, but I also respect the conventions of literary criticism, of writing about writing, and writing about authors--there's nothing in my article that falls outside those conventions. Thanks for your consideration. Best, Jim --James Cihlar (talk) 22:02, 12 March 2010 (UTC)

objectionable

Dear Uxepat, I'm concerned that you are not hearing my objections. I find your tags on my article offensive. It appears that wikipedia is singling my article out for criticism and holding it to different standards than other articles on your site. As I emailed you, here is Wikipedia's entry for an author I grabbed at random:

"Charles Baxter (born 13 May 1947 in Minneapolis) to John and Mary Barber (Eaton) Baxter. He is an American author known for blending a quiet, sometimes absurdist wit with a profound sympathy for his far-from-perfect characters; he has also attracted attention for the consummate brilliance of his prose. He is likewise celebrated as an engaging and even deeply moving performer of his own work in public readings. His writing has been compared to that of Anton Chekhov, William Trevor, Alice Munro, and John Cheever."

How is "the consummate brilliance of his prose" not a "Peacock Term"? And yet that denigrating label, with accompanying cartoon, is not affixed to that entry. I make no such sweeping claims in my entry. I believe you are misreading the quotes you have isolated, in effect confusing a fluid prose style with puffery. The phrases you isolate are no more or less interpretative than "blending a quiet, sometimes absurdist wit with a profound sympathy." This is the language of literary criticism, and it already exists in your encyclopedia. As a PhD who has participated in many indexes and directories, including the CCCC, I am confident in what I have presented here and would appreciate a speedy resolution to my request.

Many thanks, Jim --James Cihlar (talk) 22:36, 12 March 2010 (UTC)

BTW, thanks for all your work. --SPhilbrickT 18:53, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

I wonder if a system to refer users to specific wikiprojects and notability guidelines, etc. might be useful. In part I think this may help quickly resolve many posts there and put the responsibility on the users wishing to create articles. For instance an article on architecture could be referred to that Wikiproject where an editor experienced in that content area could quickly deduce if/how the content could fit into our current offerings on the subject (whereas you or I may not know if something is already covered under another name) or if the sources are dubious in some way (which may not be obvious to those unfamiliar in the subject area). I think the entire Wikipedia:Requests for feedback page is overwhelming as there are so many requests. In this way maybe we could help clear off some requests to those better able to help manage the request. We note at Wikipedia:Requests for feedback that the request has been moved to ____ wikiproject and maybe note the same on the associated article talkpage and user talkpage, or even have a bot do it. Does this sound like it may help? -- Banjeboi 20:05, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

The "palming" photo I'd like to submit is taken from the Washington High School yearbook of 1929. It has appeared in a book dedicated to the Washington (IN) Hatchets written by a hometown friend. I will find out whether the yearbook carries a copyright notice. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Keith Ellis (talkcontribs) 21:04, 29 March 2010 (UTC)
Our local public library confirms that the 1929 Washington (IN) High School yearbook contains no copyright information. The picture in question appeared in a self-published book in 1996 whose author says nobody apparently owns the copyright on it. I submitted the picture to WikiMedia Commons but now don't see it "available" anywhere. What should I do next? Thanks! Keith Ellis (talk) 23:28, 29 March 2010 (UTC)
I tried to name it "DeJernett Palming Picture" or something like that. Definitely had the name DeJernett at the beginning. My own file-photo is named DeJernettPalmingPic. Thanks for the help.Keith Ellis (talk) 00:40, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the review Ukexpat! I am working on your suggestion now. I appreciate your time.--Txrunner246 (talk) 18:23, 29 March 2010 (UTC)

Hello again!

I edited the page for Tarrant Area Food Bank a few months ago, and have noticed some "issues" with the article. According to Wikipedia:

This article has multiple issues. Please help improve the article or discuss these issues on the talk page. It does not cite any references or sources. Please help improve it by citing reliable sources. Tagged since December 2009. The notability of this article's subject is in question. If notability cannot be established, it may be listed for deletion. Tagged since December 2009. It is written like an advertisement and needs to be rewritten from a neutral point of view. Tagged since December 2009.

I'm just a volunteer for this organization, so I tried to write in as neutral a voice as possible. Also, I did cite several sources throughout the article, so I'm not sure why it needs more. Could you offer any suggestions for improving the page?

Look great, in my opinion!

I've added a note about Indiana's Mr Basketball award, but didn't get the "redirect" instruction correct. Could you once again help me out there? Once I see how you did it, I can make more links easier.

Thanks so much for your friendly attention.Keith Ellis (talk) 16:41, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, again! Next up will be adding all the references. I think I'm catching onto it. Should I always make a new article on my User Page first and then ask for it to be converted? Keith Ellis (talk) 16:56, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
The new (brief) article is at my User Page. Maybe I don't need to assure you, but all that I'm writing is reference-able. For years I've been writing this stuff on basketball forums and taking abuse from disbelievers -- so you can imagine how enjoyable it is to get it out & tell others to take a look! Thanks once again. re Wikipedia Req for feedbk re User:AgRince/Social Science Research on Greatness

hello ukexpat

i apologize for asking you re this.. for simple reason that you seem to be by far the most active editor giving feedback on the Wikipedia Request for Feedback page...

but i submitted two requests for feedback re my article == User:AgRince/Social Science Research on Greatness == as per your advice when you very helpfully returned my initial version of the article to my user space so that i could rework it..

my two requests for feedback are numbered 120 (16 march 10) and 162 (25 mar 10) both with the heading: 'User:AgRince/Social Science Research on Greatness'

why i've not gotten a comment from any editor is beyond me.. as in both cases a large number of requests submitted after mine have been commented on..

what i'm asking .. asking you simply because i have no idea where else to look at this point.. is to have a look at my revised article or perhaps ask another editor to do so.. (either at 120, or 162 on the wiki res for feedkb page)..

without feedback i've no idea how to proceed at this point, and i have put a lot of time and effort into getting this article in what is hopefully acceptable form for use on wikipedia..

again, i fully aprreciate how much work you're doing re such feedback.. it's obvious with only a quick glance at the req for feedback page.. but i simply don't know whom else to ask

many thanks for whatever you can do

FYI: Virtual Tuning - Proposing article for deletion per WP:PROD.

Fortunately some virtual tuners noticed that you had marked the article and un-did the PROD, one of those people left a comment on the page, and told me about this...

There are thousands of people who have a hobby of virtual tuning, and the subject is definitely notable as also acknowledged by the reviewer when I posted the article up for review before making it "live". I know there have been references in multiple car magazines and the New York Times over the years that can be used. I will see what I can do to dig up some of these sources.

I have posted a Oldprodfull tag on the page as per the process explained (feel free to remove your user name from the explanatory message if you want to). —Preceding unsigned comment added by Automotive Designz (talkcontribs) 02:13, 5 April 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the message. I sense, and sympathise with, your frustration. hi!

hi ukexpat.

i'm new to wikipedia and thought i'd start off with a page on a company I lean on heavily and use all the time.

after asking for the page to "Go Live", you commented that the page is "Spammy" (i didnt really undertsnad what you mean). becasue, to me, 'spammy' means that I am sending unsolicited emails to people or harassing in some way or another.

about notability: do I need to give more references to sources and events?

what needs to be done to rectify?

- (am I likely to run into these problems every time I create a page for something that I admire or wish to share?)

Thank you so much for your speedy feedback. I'll address the issues you raised today and re-submit the article.

Vitaled (talk) 08:11, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

you are mistaken, you are very hard on a newcomer

Listen, I do not know of some other advertising, but you are wrong to put this serious attempt as an article for deletion without normal etiquette or respect, nor reading the references.

I presume you overdosed on your native sarcasm, I am sorry that you head aches when presented with a new idea.

After some years trying to disprove it, I have become an independent and unaffiliated expert on Human Design, it is something and it is notable. That is why I decided to come here and find INTELLIGENT people, for example Oxbridge, who care about empiricism and truth and what on earth is this new thing - it is surely not what you think, if, I presume, you still are open to any new ideas? Headache! Thinking is good for you, Mr expat. New ideas, try some.

Why do you not allow others to read the article and the references? Your head aches? Take an aspirin and read it again.

Why not learn to read it and the references for yourself, or did they not cover that at Oxford, my university had a lighter blue.

A Schopenhauer said, new truth goes through three phases, ridicule, violently opposed, and widely accepted. I sense that we reach the second stage here, your attack was just bullying to a serious newcomer

Support me, I am new here, and I have a valid point of view. Put it back and let others also read and decide. We need time to check these references out and get page numbers and so on.

That is normal wiki etiquette, OK Mikemahalo (talk) 14:31, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

maybe I missed your post - it is like a maze here, I see that you did at least consider the points, even so, why did you not give a chance for myself and others to CORRECT this? Is MAINSPACE so sacred? Is this how wikipedia started? Is this the spirit of wikipedia, if so, you have allowed it to become mean and you did not respect the reasonableness of the guidelines that I have read. Put it back for at least a couple of days, and assist me, now I have to know how to move it back to my own space with the latest edits, retrieve it, please assist me, I know you mean only to keep wikipedia clean, but I also did a reasonable first attempt here. Mikemahalo (talk) 14:35, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

I apologise if you felt personally attacked. I suppose I felt that too, you dismissed my hard work, and painful removal of so much that was really unsuitable, with your native sarcasm - your head aches? You proposed deletion Too Fast. ALL the information for newcomers says we have a few days to improve our sources, you decided not to follow that, and it seems you have the power, and powerful friends, to laugh at the sincere efforts I put in here. My reference sources are fine, you are applying stricter rules to this article because of previous problems with other contributors, who did not understand the rules, at least I got some understanding, I changed the article TO THE SPECIFICATIONS but you moved the goal posts with further rules that are not in the information for newcomers. So my references are not tuned to exact page numbers, but YOU did not check them or their quality nor allow anyone else. I got the message from feedback and decided, ok, it says we have a couple of days, others will surely join if I start, there is a lot of interest now. But now NOBODY can find my user original or the article. Nowhere does it say, oh, your text will disappear and nobody can find the final changes. Mikemahalo (talk) 15:20, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

thank you

hello ukexpat. thank you for getting in touch... i'm really confused and am hoping someone with some more wiki experience (like yourself) can help me get this article posted. i read thoroughly all the up-front rules and regulations on what is a valid post and what is not, and i believe the piece complies...

i've gotten a bit confused, though, with the actual process of posting it. is there anything you can do to help me get it live?

I have resolved several issues ...

Orphan: This page is no longer orphaned. It links to several other Wikipedia pages. Citations: Inline citations have been inserted where appropriate. Wikify: This page has been duly Wikified. Neutrality: The neutrality was posted as being problematic, but I don't see any specific messages on my talk page. I think solving these other issues should solve this issue also.

What's next? Please notify me of what else I need to do so the page appears in a clean format. Thank you. :> —Preceding unsigned comment added by Deadlinedd (talkcontribs) 07:55, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

Input citations, however ...

Under the References section, red ink suggest I haven't put in title names. I can fix that, but when I click on edit for that section, the actual references don't show up. What should I do to fix this aspect of the piece? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Deadlinedd (talkcontribs) 09:52, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

YFZ Ranch page

There are a number of what would seem to ME, to be Vandals on the YFZ Ranch page ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:YFZ_Ranch#Court_Rulings ) ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/YFZ_Ranch#Court_rulings ). To say they are difficult to negotiate with is an understatement. Behind the scenes in discussion I post my reasons for edits, wait, and then receive no reply. I post the edits which are (at least recently), copiously notated from links to court documents and exact quotes from them, and I am accused of bias.

Indeed I have a bias as we all do, but the three contributors removing the edits and complaining refuse to allow even the title of the court motions that have passed be used, stating that those wholly adopted motions themselves represent a "POV." The short form of the discussion is as follows. Evidence seized at the YFZ Ranch is subject to an ongoing dispute in the extant appeal of Raymond Jessop's conviction. It was initially ruled acceptable by the Judge in Raymond's criminal case, and by the Judge who signed the warrant for the raid. At present evidence flowing from that raid is considered acceptable in Texas court cases.

The evidence though, has been ruled inadmissible in Arizona using precisely the same arguments (modified to fit Arizona law) as were used in Texas. A motion was made 9/3/08 that was finally ruled on 2/5/10, in which the Court wholly adopted the 9/3/08 motion by assenting to the terms of a 2/4/10 stipulation of the defense and prosecution which simply stated that the motion of 9/3/08 be adopted. In both that stipulation, and in the original motion, the raid was termed "Unlawful," for Arizona purposes.

All of this was linked as footnotes to original court documents. Direct though short quotes were employed in those documents to make the entry appear as follows:

On February 5, 2010, Arizona Judge Steven F. Conn approved a Stipulation[57] from the previous day between Mohave County prosecutor Matt Smith and Warren Jeffs' defense attorney, Michael Piccarreta, that evidence seized from the YFZ Ranch in Texas would not be used in any manner in Warren Jeffs' two criminal trials in Arizona. [58] [59]Based on the agreement of the attorneys, Judge Conn issued an order granting the defense "Motion to Suppress Evidence Obtained in Unlawful Searches of FLDS Property" and canceled a hearing on the issue.[60]. Jeffs' first of two trials on charges of being an accomplice to sexual conduct with a minor is scheduled to begin November 2, 2010. [61]

This entry itself is a result of several revisions in which care was taken to attend to the complaints of "BlueSooner," "RonLawHouston," and "Hope4Kids." There is absolutely nothing untruthful about it whatsoever, and in fact it has as I said, been rewritten to more or less accommodate their complaints.

Edits have been made to complain that the sources were "improper" based on the name used for those sources, even though the source was a direct link to the Mohave County Arizona Court site, and the complete documents there.

None of the three will acknowledge that the raid was deemed "unlawful" and until recently have refused even to acknowledge (sometimes loudly on their own blogs) that the evidence was even suppressed in Arizona. There are few public references to this evidentiary challenge and eventual exclusion in Arizona, the sole reference being by Salt Lake Tribune reporter Brooke Adams. ( http://166.70.44.68/blogs/plurallife/2010/02/conn-grants-suppression-order/ ) This addition to the Wikipedia entry would make it accurate with regard to subsequent important court cases directly tied to the raid. Where is the Human Design Article by Mike Mahalo now?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Mikemahalo/Human_Design is blank - can the article be put back there now, or is it to be undeleted and restored to mainspace. Because "If it is likely that significant coverage in independent sources can be found for a topic, deletion due to lack of notability is inappropriate unless active effort has been made to find these sources. There is a huge difference between an article that meets the basic criteria to avoid speedy deletion but needs more work, and an "article" which clearly doesn't - that's why we have speedy deletion and why users are strongly encouraged to create drafts in userspace first. That was the case with this article - the user was advised by at least two other editors not to move it to mainspace because it was not ready, but he moved it anyway, and then got upset when it was deleted. I bend over backwards to help new editors make sure that their articles are ready for mainspace and to help clean them up when they get there, but if a new editor doesn't heed the advice they are given, that's not my fault. – ukexpat (talk) 21:09, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

Hi, I'm a bot and this is an automated message. Template:Creation/Sandbox is blank and you are its sole author. FrescoBot interpreted it as a deletion request and asked administrators to satisfy it per G7 criteria. Next time you can explicitly request the deletion by inserting the tag {{db-author}}. If you didn't want to remove the page, please consider a different way to store informations or put some content in it. Admins are able to recover deleted pages. Please do not contact the bot operator for issues not related with bot's behaviour. To opt out of these bot messages, add {{bots|deny=FrescoBot}} somewhere on your talk page. -- FrescoBot (talk) 11:06, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

thanx for cleaning up; I'm still struggling with the infobox. It's not as easy as I expected, which is probably a good thing. Dirk— Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.87.139.143 (talkcontribs)

Thanks!

Hey... Thanks for the feedback... Much appreciated.

Still an advert

I didn't see it as a blatant advertising. Would you like to nominate it for MFD? As a draft done by an indef-blocked user, it doesn't really seem worthy of keeping. Nyttend (talk) 01:53, 14 April 2010 (UTC)
