Thanks for Lady Meng Jiang

Thanks for looking over Lady Meng Jiang and moving the image. It does indeed make more sense to have her lovely self at the head of the article. But it would make even more sense to have one which is from a Chinese source. So if you have found one in your work on the Great Wall, would you think about getting it up on Wikimedia? I'll keep looking myself, of course, but so far I haven't had time or luck in finding one which is out of copyright.

By the way, I still have a little more material to add to the Meng article, esp. from the Waldron book, so it would be helpful if you looked it over in a while to see if it makes sense.

I'm trying to make the article useful both to users who just want to know the story but also to people who want more depth and complication. This is why I have separated the sections into "Legend" and then modern background.

If I recall correctly, Haiyan Lee's "Tears That Crumbled the Great Wall" has some illustrations from the ROC era, which should be out of copyright already. Hi Signedzzz, with respect, I really think the picture is very irrelevant (even forgetting that it's from 2010), why put a picture there under the "Impact" section if the picture shows no impact? Moreover, what does an image of people sitting at a mall exhibition sponsored by Sotherby's add to the understanding of the protests? The section talks about business. HK business is very high-value, as people are likely to forget. And the luxury sector has apparently not been hit. The pic illustrates this, with an aura of calmness and business-as-usual.

PAD incompatibility

Considering that PAD makes millions of dollars a day, has scores of millions of users who play several times a day, that the game isn't going to launch under Android 5.0 is a significant issue, and the article as presented is inaccurate. PAD does not play well with ART, relying upon Dalvik to parse properly. In short, once one allows the upgrade to 5.0, all those millions of PAD players are suddenly S.O.L. So... not only is the article inaccurate as you keep reverting it to, but for the sake of decency, people DESERVE to know that it's not going to run under 5.0. What's your problem with my edit? @Falc: Simple. At the very least, don't sign your edits as you would on a talk page (That means no tildes like this ~~~~). Then try to find a WP:reliable source that backs your statement, since the threshold for inclusion on Wikipedia is WP:verifiability, not truth. I'll probably start a consensus. I can see your reasoning for Eastern Wu, etc. but the flag image I put on the page for the Yuan dynasty actually is a popular and famous modern flag used for the Yuan dynasty. It wasn't some random person who made that Yuan flag. I've seen it used in popular culture. And also, if we ever come across some ancient drawing of a battle between sides and one side has a flag depicted, would it be reasonable to get a workshop user or anyone who could do it decently to draw one up on like gimp or something? And why do you always root for making pages ugly? It's not like I put pictures of Dynasty Warriors characters on pages. Would you know how to convert lunar months to any modern named months?

Isn't it possible by converting, per se, the Battle of Dongxing was fought in the 12 lunar month of 252. Can't this be converted to a date in the Julian calender and then that could be used to identify the month (if it would have been December, etc)? Eric - Contact me please. There are online converters that do this, like this one from the Academia Sinica. Seems to me the books were published in 1909. Since we don't know who the artist is and when/if he or she had died, and public domain requires that "all non-photographic works enter the public domain fifty years after the death of the creator", it's a grey area. _dk (talk) 21:48, 21 December 2014 (UTC)

Why do you two oppose everything I do?

Everything I do. I joined the project when I was like 11 and yeah I was immature and made fake citations every now and then and I understand why that made me look bad. But I'm 16 now and I have come to realize that you two don't want me to do anything.

When I made the three rebellions in Shouchun into separate articles, you two forced the page to be renamed into a new name that was grammatically incorrect.

You two revert almost every change I make. (excluding the last Red Cliffs image I truly just made a mistake)

And the picture on Dongxing? Don't we aim to improve each page? It's not like it isn't good. If you could do better than do it. Because I sit here contemplating whether or not I should retire from the project again all because I get the feeling I'm not wanted.

Eric, you don't seem familiar enough with the project to understand its rules and how it works, and you aren't very receptive when your mistakes are highlighted to you or even corrected for you in some instances. As dk said, we are not trying to force you out of the project, but some of your actions (e.g. edit warring on Gan Ning) are clearly going against the community's rules and norms. I understand how you two view things and the intent behind it now, but as of now it's not really a matter of taking sides rather more it is a matter of you two make decisions and that decision goes unless acted upon by multiple users which is yet to happen. The pictures are not fair game unless you can find the original photographer/illustrator. Looks to me that the owner of the website found those images elsewhere. About the template, if we do it that way, some articles would have two (or three) campaignboxes that has roughly the same content. I see. I was wondering because some of the photos are black and white and look like they are from the late 1800s to early 1900s. I guess I'll work on the campaignboxes in my userspace and test them in previews on the actual pages with saving to see how it looks. But I can do that some other time. And I found where the images like that Taishi Ci one are from. They're from the Zengxiang quantu Sanguo yanyi (增像全图.三国演义.上) edition of the Qing print and I believe the illustrator must have died more than 50 years ago; unless they drew the pictures in their teenager years. For instance, say the edition was released in 1912 when the Qing fell. Now lets say the illustrator was 20 at the time. If he lived to be 70 (which is around the time people start croaking I guess) he would have died in 1962. 50 years later it would be 2012. But the only date for a Qing dynasty edition would be 1906 (although I don't know if thats the Zengxiang quantu Sanguo yanyi? Maybe Mao Zonggang drew these in an earlier edition in the 1600s or 1700s?) and I doubt the person who drew these would have been as young as 20 in 1906. Eric - Contact me please. That's why I said it's a grey area. Sure common sense would say that copyright should have expired already, but it's not conclusive evidence. I've also seen them used in Moss Roberts's edition of the book although they did not have the same writing on it (the pictures were the same) and for instance, the one used in Sima Yi's article is one of them and that has been uploaded since 2006 and no has cared yet. So

What is your opinion about moving the three rebellions in Shouchun to Wang Ling's Rebellion, Guanqiu Jian and Wen Qin's Rebellion, and Zhuge Dan's Rebellion? If we go by most common usage when a definite name can not be determined aren't we suppose to go by that most common usage? I know the DW games are very BAD to use as references but they seem to be the most influential transmitter of the event.

A few years back when the RM was made (and when I was young and reckless, although I still am––just less now) an IP said that using Zhuge Dan Rebellion, for example, is what is preferred over possessive. Although understandable to fluent English speakers such as myself it is a faux pas in the English language. The actual preference is definitely possessive over noun adjunct. In fact, I only use attributive (I speak English as my first language and I take AP just sayin' haha) when saying things like soda can, garage sale, etc.

This still bares the question about the lower case or capital r/R. In my own opinion, not only is using a lower case r in a proper noun (because it is a historical event, such as Battle of the Bulge instead of Battle of the bulge) awkward–– but I also find it unreasonable because the most popular/frequent usage is capital. Although it shouldn't matter much because the term is collectively a proper noun.

I'm not trying to nag you into it but I just want you to consider my reasoning and tell me what you think.

Oh, and what a shame about the Yellow Turban Rebellion drawing. It's actually pretty good. If it does get taken down I'll probably end up working on doing one (that wasn't completed in 5 minutes just for the sole purpose of prettying up the Battle of Dongxing) over the course of the next few weeks or at least once my midterm exams are finished and I move onto my next semester of school.

Song dynasty painting

Thanks for the correction! Upon further inspection, especially the style of hats worn by the officials in that painting, I should have known better that it was a Song-dynasty painting and not a Yuan-dynasty one. Perhaps a future Government of the Song dynasty or Military of the Song dynasty modelling the seminal work you did a few years ago would be a good place for the painting! Conditionals.

My recent edit has been reverted. I am about to change it back, but not before providing some explanation. It is a question of grammar.

"Xunzi holds that man is naturally inclined towards selfishness, and that if this inclination is not curbed, human societies would devolve into chaos."

These verbs are incompatible. Both

"Xunzi holds that man is naturally inclined towards selfishness, and that if this inclination is not curbed, human societies devolve into chaos."

and

"Xunzi holds that man is naturally inclined towards selfishness, and that if this inclination were not curbed, human societies would devolve into chaos."

are correct, though not equivalent. The first emphasizes a presumed necessary implicature, and the second emphasizes that devolution into chaos is counterfactual to the observed reality. I think the first is better. At any rate, the sentence as I found it ("is not curbed… would devolve") is simply incorrect.
