Confusion in the previous message- WAM

Hello again, I believe the earlier message has created some confusion. If you have already submitted the details in the Google form, it has been accepted, you don't need to submit it again. The earlier reminder is for those who haven't yet submitted their Google form or if they any alternate way to provide their address. I apologize for creating the confusion. Thanks-Sailesh Patnaik

Kowloon Walled City in SL

I am not a frequent contributor to wikipedia, so forgive my ignorance of how this all works, but I am not sure what the objection to the mention of the Second Life Sim of the Kowloon Walled City was. If there is mention of this sim elsewhere, I haven't found it. My only desire is that awareness of this sim, which is what led me to learn more about the real Kowloon Walled City, seems something that belongs somewhere in Wikipedia.

Removing my addition to Sun Tzu page

Hi Underbar dk,

Yes I see why you did it. I was new to Wiki, but now it has been made clear to me that self-advertisement is not allowed.

The other part of your question, why the revision, I have detailed on my talk page.

So I gather I must now wait for someone to note my work unprompted. Is this correct? The reason I ask is that the local paper gave my book an enthusiastic review. See http://camdennewjournal.com/article/winning-words

If I asked them, they would add in a line about my Revision. Is this acceptable?

Cath Writer (talk) 11:08, 14 May 2018 (UTC)

Hi @Cath Writer:, thank you for your understanding and explanation. If possible, it would be best if an academic journal reviewed your book, since those in academia (preferably in the fields of military history or Asian studies) are better equipped to analyse the merits of your work, and whether it represents a significant contribution to the study of Sun Tzu. Please refer to Wikipedia's consensus on self-published and independent sources. Cheers, _dk (talk) 16:57, 14 May 2018 (UTC)

Hi Underbar dk,

I've been away for a while, but during that time Soldier Magazine has reviewed my book. See this link: http://viewer.zmags.com/publication/8c19e238#/8c19e238/64 Does this count as a qualifying review? You told me that it would be best in an academic journal. I know Soldier magazine is not quite that, but I am at a bit of a loss to think of an academic journal devoted to military matters in the UK. Can you help me here? Cheers. Cath Writer (talk) 10:42, 14 November 2018 (UTC)

@Cath Writer:: At this point I would not object to the blurb being readded in the The Art of War article, provided that the reviews from the Camden New Journal and Soldier Magazine are cited. Cheers. _dk (talk) 19:28, 14 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi Underbar dk,

Good news, but I am not clear what you mean by citation. Rather than put it in to page on Sun Tzu, and then have it taken out again, Can you tell me if the following is acceptable:

In 2018 The Revised Art of War by Keiran Proffer was published in the U.K. This is the first complete revision of Sun Tzu’s work in the English language. Reviewed in Camden New Journal [1] and Soldier Magazine[2].

Then under References: Proffer, Keiran (2018), The Revised Art of War, ISBN 978-1-9999642-0-7.

Cath Writer (talk) 14:31, 16 November 2018 (UTC)

@Cath Writer: The claim about being the "first complete revision of Sun Tzu’s work in the English language" will need to be cited to a new source, since the two sources you provided don't make this claim. Does the book say this? Also, I cannot guarantee that your addition will not get taken out again, since this is Wikipedia after all, and you really shouldn't be using Wikipedia to promote your book anyway. (See WP:PROMOTION). _dk (talk) 17:15, 16 November 2018 (UTC)

No source - except my book - says that it is the first revision of Sun Tzu in English. Soldier Mag just says it is a "revision". The fact remains that it is the first such revision in English, which is why I think it should be on Wiki. Cath Writer (talk) 15:01, 17 November 2018 (UTC)

@Cath Writer: Then you should provide the page number of the book that contains that claim. Cheers. _dk (talk) 02:07, 18 November 2018 (UTC)

References

On page 109 of my book I say, "As far as I have been able to ascertain, this book is the first complete revision of Sun Tzu’s work in the English language". Cath Writer (talk) 11:27, 21 November 2018 (UTC)

@Cath Writer: Please add the mention to the article you want to add it to, or continue this discussion in its talk page. _dk (talk) 11:40, 21 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi Underbar,

I am not clear what you are saying I should say. The original was: "This is the first complete revision of Sun Tzu’s work in the English language." Are you saying I should add a reference to my book, giving the page number to it?

This may be a bit cheeky, but would you be prepared to add it to the Sun Tzu page? Given you know more about it than I do.

Cath Writer (talk) 11:40, 23 November 2018 (UTC)

Cath Writer, your express purpose so far at Wikipedia has been to promote your book and this is inappropriate. We are not a promotional platform. You have a conflict of interest and have been advised as such on your talk page by other editors. While we welcome academic edits about subjects, self promotion does not qualify. You need to cease immediately. If you believe that I am in error then you may post at the Conflict of interest noticeboard and ask for a review of the situation.

Should we migrate the "Chinese animation" page under the "Donghua" namespace ?

Hi there, I've noticed there are already articles like "Manhua", "Banhua","Lianhuanhua" on the site. It would be neat if this article about Donghua is actually under the "Donghua" tag in the same naming style. Sorry if I've caused any trouble, since I'm just a newbie here. Hope you can offer me advice. Thx. −−Aceus0shrifter (talk) 06:19, 21 December 2018 (UTC)

@Aceus0shrifter: Please follow the instructions in WP:MOVE and request a page move properly. I personally have no opinion about what the article should be titled (only that moves should not be done by cut and paste), but it would be a good idea to initiate a discussion on the talk page of the article. _dk (talk) 07:45, 21 December 2018 (UTC)

Vandalism to ancient dates

Hello, Underbar dk,

I've been spending hours reverting vandalism that a series of IP accounts (66.210.239.21-66.210.239.25) made over January and February. There are hundreds of edits primarily to year articles (like AD 82) and biographies of ancient figures (like Marcus Atius), where the editor altered the birth or death date by a year or so. This has resulted in several categories being deleted since it appeared that no one was born or died during certain years and the categories were empty when that was really not the case. Since not a lot of content was removed (often the edits are 0 bytes), these tiny edits are hard to detect and often were individually reverted by well-intentioned editors while the IP accounts' edit histories were not examined.

I'm writing to you because as I've been reverting this vandalism, I've seen your edits to these same types of articles. I'd like to ask you that if during your editing, you see this pattern of vandalism, if you could let me or another admin know so we can block these accounts. Needless to say that these edits took little time to do but involved much more time cleaning up. Thanks! Liz Read! Talk! 22:43, 5 February 2019 (UTC)

@Liz: I will be on the lookout, thanks for letting me know. Some birth dates for ancient Chinese biographies are especially hard to verify since East Asian age reckoning means many age calculations are off by one year, which makes detecting whether an edit is vandalism a bit more complicated. _dk (talk) 03:04, 6 February 2019 (UTC)

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for the calculation of the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. Tianjin Explosions

You ever considered the authenticity of the news coverage from outside of China?  — Preceding unsigned comment added by Guofenghao22 (talkcontribs) 09:36, 4 March 2019 (UTC)

@Guofenghao22: Have you ever considered Wikipedia's policies on WP:Reliable sources and WP:Consensus? I am not against presenting the Chinese refutation of Western reports, but that cannot be done simply by blanking the whole section. _dk (talk) 09:58, 4 March 2019 (UTC)
@Underbar dk: I did. If the article is to be neutral, please however include both Chinese and Western media sources. Otherwise, no mention is the best practice.
@Guofenghao22: You cannot force other people to write by blanking content until somebody writes something acceptable to you. "No mention is the best practice" is not how Wikipedia operates. _dk (talk) 11:04, 4 March 2019 (UTC)
@Underbar dk: Dear, you cannot force others to believe something that is totally counterintuitive and yielding conflicting reports, either, in which case, it is not the role Wikipedia serves.
@Guofenghao22: Wikipedia is not the place where you can talk to someone condescendingly either. And as such this is my final reply to you. I am sorry that your worldview does not align with Wikipedia's. _dk (talk) 18:08, 4 March 2019 (UTC)

Where does it state that other Wikipedia articles can't be used as a guideline?

Underbar dk, can you please use the Talk page when updating articles? You undid my last revision because it used a reference derived from a Wikipedia article, but did not. I don't recall specific ban by Wikipedia against using other Wikipedia articles as a citation, can you show me where it states that in the Wikipedia guidelines. While you shouldn't use the same Wikipedia article itself as a reference or a related Wikipedia article, I don't see the problem with using an unrelated Wikipedia article for simple uncontested facts. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.111.162.10 (talk) 20:07, 29 March 2019 (UTC)

@198.111.162.10: WP:CIRCULAR is the relevant policy. In this case just a wikilink to butt (unit) would suffice. _dk (talk) 20:32, 29 March 2019 (UTC)
