Anarchism[edit]

Hi UnknownVolin,

I saw your work on articles related to anarchism and wanted to say hello, as I work in the topic area too. If you haven't already, you might want to watch our noticeboard for Wikipedia's coverage of anarchism, which is a great place to ask questions, collaborate, discuss style/structure precedent, and stay informed about content related to anarchism. Take a look for yourself!

And if you're looking for other juicy places to edit, consider expanding a stub, adopting a cleanup category, or participating in one of our current formal discussions.

Feel free to say hi on my talk page and let me know if these links were helpful (or at least interesting). Hope to see you around. czar 05:35, 9 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Czar Thank you very much. The project looks really exciting. UnknownVolin (talk) 06:07, 9 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Makhno[edit]

Hi @UnknownVolin, have you happened upon the article on Nestor Makhno recently? Wanted to reach out in case you haven't seen: @Grnrchst has been working for many months on Wikipedia's coverage of Makhno and the Makhnovshchina and has put the former up as a Good Article (GA) nominee, a kind of peer review. Since you share topical interest and it's rare that we get a subject-matter expert on-wiki, thought I'd reach out in case you'd be interested. GA reviews are straightforward in that the review is assessing against specific criteria and following some basic steps. Or if interested but need a less time-intensive alternative, it'd be great to hear even some brief comments/feedback on the article's talk page re: your take on the article, its breadth/scope, sourcing, structure, and generally where you think it can be improved. No pressure but thought I'd reach out. Happy editing, czar 18:56, 31 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Czar, I haven't looked extensively at the Makhno page, but I'd be more than happy to do a GA review. UnknownVolin (talk) 20:36, 31 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Nice! Looking forward to it and please reach out if I can help with anything. czar 20:40, 31 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you![edit]

The Good Article Reviewer's Medal of Merit
For your diligent efforts in reviewing the Nestor Makhno article for GA-status, in an incredibly in-depth and thorough breakdown, which has greatly helped in improving its quality. Thanks for everything! Grnrchst (talk) 07:26, 14 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Oh! Thank you very much. UnknownVolin (talk) 03:06, 15 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again[edit]

Hey! Thanks for catching the detail on Makhno's birth date, I'd not considered that the secondary sources may have been citing the baptismal date. I have encountered this before with other people from this period and it's always an annoying thing to trip up on. Hope you're well on your end, thanks again for the fix, it's always a pleasure. :) -- Grnrchst (talk) 22:12, 30 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hey! Good to hear from you. Yeah those dates are sneaky. I missed it as well the first time around. I saw the date discrepancy with the Ukrainian Makhno wiki entry and figured they might have it correct over there. UnknownVolin (talk) 22:37, 30 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nestor Makhno images[edit]

Hey, I'm in the process of submitting the article on Nestor Makhno for featured article status and I'm being asked about the copyright status of the images in the article. Of course I know the identity of the people in the images and where and when the images were taken, but I don't have any information about the identity of the photographer(s) or when/where the images were first published. I've tried looking through sources but haven't been able to find any further information on this front. Is this something you could possibly help me with? Regards. --Grnrchst (talk) 09:02, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! Good to hear from you. It is extremely hard to track down many of these photographs. I've never come across the name of the photographer of any of these photos. I do know where some of the originals come from. I published a number of these same Makhno photos and didn't encounter any copyright issues. As far as I understand they are in the public domain due to the time elapsed. Here is the info I have:
  1. Feature photo of "Makhno in 1921." International Institute of Social History. Amsterdam, Netherlands. Senya Flechine Papers. BG A8/730.
  2. "Nestor Makhno in 1906." Unknown. It is possible the original is/was held at the Huliaipole Local History Museum, which was recently damaged by Russian bombing.
  3. "Union of Poor Peasants." State Central Museum of Contemporary History of Russia. Moscow, Russia. 4921265. A copy was also held at the Huliaipole Museum.
  4. "Nestor Makhno in 1909." Unknown. I suspect the year is incorrect. The suit style suggests the late 1920s or early 30s. My best guess is that it was taken in 1928 as part of the Makhno feature article in Ogonek, no. 22.
  5. "Makhno in 1918." Unknown. Possibly a copy at the State Central Museum of Contemporary History of Russia.
  6. "Makhno and his lieutenants." I'm quite sure I remember seeing a copy at the State Central Museum of Contemporary History of Russia.
  7. "Makhno, with his wife Halyna Kuzmenko, surrounded by other Makhnovists in Poland, 1922". There is a copy in Poland's Central Military Archives and I believe another one at the International Institute of Social History in Amsterdam.
  8. "Nestor Makhno with Alexander Berkman in Paris, 1927." I believe a copy is held at the International Institute of Social History.
  9. "Nestor Makhno c. 1930." Unknown.
  10. "Makhno and his daughter Elena in Paris." Published in Ogonek, no. 22, 1928.
