Use of the word America

Hello Uris Out of curiousity, is there any reason why the french, german and italian translations of American were original research, but the portraguese and icelandic were not? I plan to get a cite from a french-english dictionary when I get home for French, but I don't know any German or ItalianWilyD 12:57, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi there WilyD, the original research weren't actual translations... the translations in those languages for a U.S. citizen correspond directly to "American" (Américain is what you'll find in French). First I changed the terms to the correct ones for French and German, then I realized they don't belong in the dubious section "Common Alternatives to the Word American". The commonly used ones aren't alternatives at all... they are "American". I don't know Icelandic, so I gave it the benefit of the doubt, and I believe the translation was actually correct for Portuguese. Uris 12:59, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

Okay, that makes a lot of sense to me. Otherwisemost of your edits were pretty good, I was just a bit puzzled on that one. FWIW, I am planning to find a decent citation for Statesider and restore that - unlike the rest listed there, it actually has decent currency in English - but that may never happen.
