Re: Vedaranyam March

Hi Vensatry, I'm afraid that the article is quite far from FAC-worthy at its stage. For starters there are several sentences and even paragraphs that are uncited. Second thing is I think more research needs to be done; the main sources seem to be Rajaji and Kamaraj biographies, which is fine for explaining the events of the march, but there is little retrospective analysis of the Satyagraha, whether it was successful, what did it achieve etc. Lastly more historical context needs to be there; for example neither the lead nor Background mentions that all this was happening as part of the Indian independence movement.—indopug (talk) 16:18, 21 January 2017 (UTC)

@Indopug: Thanks for the feedback. I'm in the process of expanding the article, so obviously I'm not in a hurry. Just needed a reviewer's overview. Once the polishing is done, I'll probably open up a PR and invite you. Btw, the Kamaraj book was written by a Wikipedian (who is now retired from en.wiki). Would it be a problem if we use it here? Vensatry (talk) 16:40, 21 January 2017 (UTC)
Ah ok, I got the idea that was a pre-FAC check and commented with that in mind. As for the Kamaraj bio, more than the author, what matters is whether the publisher (Concept) is reputed and scholarly enough, which I am not sure. By the way if you are a Chennai resident you should check out Anna Library; it will surely have a mountain of books on the subject, more so if you know Tamil as well.—indopug (talk) 05:40, 22 January 2017 (UTC)

Srirangam

Have you ever been to Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam? Is it a beautiful place/shrine? Can you let me know? Pavanjandhyala (talk) 18:00, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

Actually, I was born and raised in a nearby locality. :) And, I don't have a count. I cannot tell whether it's beautiful or not, but it's a huge one. The Commons has plenty of images. Vensatry (talk) 18:41, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
Does look good. I've been only to two of the 106 Divya Desams (107 and 108 are not counted by alive people :)) -- Thiruvengadam (you might know this) and Thiru Singavel Kundram (not sure you know this). Though the former is brilliant, i personally am fascinated with the latter. I celebrated January 1st of this year in this place; the first time in my life outside Hyderabad. Apart from Srirangam, i am also interested in Thirumohoor and Srimushnam. Only as a tourist, though :) Pavanjandhyala (talk) 03:41, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
Been to Tirupati multiple times. Others include, Parthasarathy Temple, Triplicane and Varadharaja Perumal Temple. Vensatry (talk) 05:49, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
Varadharaja Perumal Temple looks ethereal. Parthasarathy Temple is also brilliant, but it is rather strange to see Narasimha in a leading position on the main gopuram of a temple dedicated to Krishna. I mean about this pic. Anyways, thanks for the info about Srirangam and others. Pavanjandhyala (talk) 06:26, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
Yup, Narasimha is among the three icons of the shrine; Rama and Krishna being the other two. Vensatry (talk) 06:42, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

My two FLC's, here and here. Please do have a look at them. Thanks.  — Ssven2 Looking at you, kid 08:58, 20 February 2017 (UTC)

Except for Priyamanavale, others (post 2000 that is) have his role and director names. He appears as himself in Pandhayam and Rowdy Rathore. I checked the films he worked as child artist. None call his character name really, so, they are uncredited roles. As for the other ones, I really had difficulty in finding sources which only mention that he worked in those films, leave alone his character names. I really would like your/Kailash's help on this.  — Ssven2 Looking at you, kid 06:32, 2 March 2017 (UTC)

Try using YouTube links. I'm sure his late 90s films are available on the web. Vensatry (talk) 06:35, 2 March 2017 (UTC)
I'll resolve them either by tonight or tomorrow (get it up to something like in Rajinikanth filmography) and let you know if there's anything else.  — Ssven2 Looking at you, kid 08:33, 2 March 2017 (UTC)
I've posted youtube links for some of the films. I couldn't find a decent one (from well-used YouTube channels like Tamil Matinee and Cinema Junction) for his 1997 films and Priyamudan. Can you help me with that?  — Ssven2 Looking at you, kid 14:57, 4 March 2017 (UTC)
I'd suggest you to leave those cells for which you cannot find sources as blanks (or 'unknown'). Will take a look tomorrow. Vensatry (talk) 19:02, 5 March 2017 (UTC)
Done. As suggested.  — Ssven2 Looking at you, kid 14:47, 6 March 2017 (UTC)
Ugh! It looks so ugly to see those cells read "unknown", when his characters in those films were actually named. This is a perfect example of gaming the system. Ssven2, why don't you cite the film production company in the "publisher" field instead of the home video company? I think it is useful for films that are not lost, but still hard to find on home video. Kailash29792 (talk) 15:47, 6 March 2017 (UTC)
Kailash29792, going by your 'logic', this revert of Dianna too has to be WP:GAME, no? @Ssven2: Except for a couple of films, rest are uploaded in the YT by verified publishers. Not sure what's the difficulty here. Vensatry (talk) 07:31, 7 March 2017 (UTC)
Kadhalukku Mariyadhai has a full movie uploaded by Speed Audio and Video, which is not likely a well known YT channel. Nerukku Ner does not have a YT link at all (a shame). Once More doesn't have a full movie link, but its comedy sections are uploaded by AP International, which is another widely used YT channel like Cinema Junction. Kaalamellam Kaathiruppen doesn't have a proper full movie link. I'm not sure about Priyamudan, your call.  — Ssven2 Looking at you, kid 08:05, 7 March 2017 (UTC)
You could use this for Kadhalukku Mariyadhai. Kailash29792 (talk) 13:25, 7 March 2017 (UTC)

After realising you had already developed the article significantly, I left you to be the main nominator for its FLC while I be secondary. But sourcing each film proved such a tedious job, that I felt exhausted to continue. So as the main contributor can you please add sources to the lead, once Twofingered Typist finishes his GOCE work? Sources also have to be added to the "director, producer and writer" table, but I think I can handle that at a later time. Kailash29792 (talk) 15:12, 21 February 2017 (UTC)

(edit conflict) I'm a bit exhausted as well. Besides, this is a tedious process and this article needs a fair amount of work. But please advise your friend, U:Editor2050, not to add character names without sources as it's difficult to keep track of the unsourced ones. Vensatry (talk) 15:21, 21 February 2017 (UTC)
Indian news sources don't always keep track of character names. To compensate for this, I resort to citing the film itself, with or without a URL. Eg: in the same manner that films are cited in this recently-passed FL. But I'd always cite the production company, rather than the home video company, to comply with Template:Cite AV media. Kailash29792 (talk) 15:36, 21 February 2017 (UTC)
There are plenty of issues with respect to sourcing alone. Given their recent edits, I must say I'm not willing to work on the article anymore. You may nominate it without listing my name as a co-nom. Cheers, Vensatry (talk) 16:18, 21 February 2017 (UTC)
I posted a message on his talk page. I wonder if he read it. But while I gratefully accept your suggestion that I be the main nominator, me being so at your expense appears too selfish. But I'll be travelling for one week beginning tomorrow, so plans for a FLC will have to wait. Kailash29792 (talk) 16:29, 21 February 2017 (UTC)
I'm sure he doesn't understand but just tell him that the process doesn't work that way. WP:V is the core policy of the site. As someone who's written close to 50 FLs, I'm sure the reviewers will question the lack of citations (for the roles column). If I were to revert him every time the article will lose its stability, which again is only going to reduce the chances of it succeeding at the FLC. ATB! Vensatry (talk) 06:49, 22 February 2017 (UTC)

Vijay FLC refs

For Kaalamellam Kaathiruppen, can I use this as it is by a different publisher but the DVD belongs to Raj Video Vision Tamil, which is a subsidiary of Raj TV? I have referenced it like it is done for the tripod url of Kadhalukku Mariyathai.  — Ssven2 Looking at you, kid 16:13, 10 March 2017 (UTC)

Looks okay to me, but don't use the URL as it looks like a clear case of copyright infringement. Vensatry (talk) 16:30, 10 March 2017 (UTC)
I haven't. It's hidden like the tripod URL.  — Ssven2 Looking at you, kid 16:53, 10 March 2017 (UTC)
Actually, there's no need to include it in any form, if the link was published by a copyright violator. Vensatry (talk) 17:07, 10 March 2017 (UTC)
How about this ref then? The website is a part of the Network 18 group.  — Ssven2 Looking at you, kid 17:25, 10 March 2017 (UTC)

I believe it should be moved back to the original title per WP:PRIMARYTOPIC and WP:TWODABS. Since you were the one who moved it, are you for or against moving it back? On an unrelated note, is Dhanush filmography FLC still on the cards? Kailash29792 (talk) 06:50, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

Done and I hope you will comment there. I also don't feel the need for a "language" column in Dhanush filmography since he has only acted in 3 non-Tamil films. Those films' languages could be added to the "notes" column. Kailash29792 (talk) 09:03, 14 February 2017 (UTC)

The fact was ... that Dhanush played a character with bipolar disorder in 3, a 2012 Tamil film? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Dhanush filmography. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Dhanush filmography), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. March 2017 WikiCup newsletter

And so ends the first round of the competition, with 4 points required to qualify for round 2. It would have been 5 points, but when a late entrant was permitted to join the contest in February, a promise was made that his inclusion would not result in the exclusion of any other competitor. To achieve this, the six entrants that had the lowest positive score of 4 points have been added to the 64 people who otherwise would have qualified. As a result, some of the groups have nine contestants rather than eight. Our top four scorers in round 1 were:

  • Scotland Cas Liber, last year's winner, led the field with two featured articles on birds and a total score of 674.
  • European Union Iry-Hor, a WikiCup newcomer, came next with a featured article, a good article and a tally of 282 bonus points for a score of 517. All these points came from the article Nyuserre Ini, an Ancient Egyptian pharaoh,
  • Japan 1989, another WikiCup newcomer, was in joint third place at 240. 1989 has claimed points for two featured lists and one good article relating to anime and comedy series, all of which were awarded bonus points.
  • South Australia Peacemaker67 shared third place with five good articles and thirteen good article reviews, mostly on naval vessels. He is also new to the competition.

The largest number of DYKs have been submitted by Vivvt and The C of E, who each claimed for seven, and MBlaze Lightning achieved eight articles at ITN. Carbrera and Peacemaker67 each claimed for five GAs and Krishna Chaitanya Velaga was well out in front for GARs, having reviewed 32. No featured pictures, featured topics or good topics yet, but we have achieved three featured articles and a splendid total of fifty good articles.

So, on to the second round. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is a good article candidate, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Dhanush is Ragu in ENPT

I don't know how exactly this can be called WP:CRYSTAL, and I didn't obtain the info from a non-RS. The Indian Express source links the ENPT teaser (where Dhanush is called "Ragu" at around 0:32) to the production company Ondraga Entertainment's official YouTube channel, which has the "verified" sign. Thus, it is not a case of WP:FRUIT, wherein an otherwise RS becomes unusable if it traces back to a non-RS. But if I'm wrong anywhere, please tell me. --Kailash29792 (talk) 04:15, 19 April 2017 (UTC)

It's clearly a "future" event, so it does qualify WP:CRYSTAL. Vensatry (talk) 04:20, 19 April 2017 (UTC)

May 2017 WikiCup newsletter

The second round of the competition has now closed, with just under 100 points being required to qualify for round 3. YellowEvan just scraped into the next round with 98 points but we have to say goodbye to the thirty or so competitors who didn't achieve this threshold; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. Our top scorers in round 2 were:

  • Scotland Cas Liber, led the field with five featured articles, four on birds and one on astronomy, and a total score of 2049, half of which came from bonus points.
  • Japan 1989 was in second place with 826 points, 466 of which were bonus points. 1989 has claimed points mostly relating to anime and Japanese-related articles.
  • South Australia Peacemaker67 took third place with two FAs, one GA and seven GARs, mostly on naval vessels or military personnel, scoring 543 points.
  • Other contestants who scored over 400 points were Freikorp, Carbrera, and Czar. Of course all these points are now wiped out and the 32 remaining contestants start again from zero in round 3.

Vivvt submitted the largest number of DYKs (30), and MBlaze Lightning achieved 13 articles at ITN. Carbrera claimed for 11 GAs and Argento Surfer performed the most GARs, having reviewed 11. So far we have achieved 38 featured articles and a splendid 132 good articles. Commendably, 279 GARs have been achieved so far, more than double the number of GAs.

So, on to the third round. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Hello! Your submission of Vidhu Vincent at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! As you once said, "the unwritten rule is that a nomination must have a minimum of three supports with no outstanding concerns". Trisha's filmography has received 2 supports (definitely no conflict of interest, both are unbiased reviews), would you like to conduct a review of it? --Kailash29792 (talk) 14:22, 22 May 2017 (UTC)

I don't quite understand the first part. Vensatry (talk) 14:25, 22 May 2017 (UTC)
I think you meant a FLC needs at least 3 supports to pass, to which Skr15081997 replied that one ongoing FLC has received only two supports, and Ssven revealed that one of his FLCs received 4 supports; he then offered you to comment there. Like Ssven, I offered you to comment on my FLC, which has received only two reviews (both ended as supports) since last month. --Kailash29792 (talk) 14:47, 22 May 2017 (UTC)
It has more to do with a user opening a second nomination while already having one on the queue. Vensatry (talk) 17:16, 22 May 2017 (UTC)

Where was the RfC?

Hi Vensatry, re: this, where was the RfC on this? I don't see that WT:ICTF was invited to the discussion. Thank you, Cyphoidbomb (talk) 14:36, 18 May 2017 (UTC)

Ah, never mind. I see it was here. Bummer. That's going to make it more difficult for non-Indians to find sources for Indian films. If I don't know what a film's script looks like, I can't search for and translate references written in the native tongue. EthicEthnic-warring promotes ignorance once again! Cyphoidbomb (talk) 14:40, 18 May 2017 (UTC)

Ethic? Or Ethnic? Anyway, I'm just as pleased as Cyphoidbomb is with the outcome of the RfC. Yet why do the fields "film name" and "native name" still exist, if Indic scripts are discouraged? Strangely, every other script is accepted (including Chinese, which has it's own infobox template). --Kailash29792 (talk) 15:03, 18 May 2017 (UTC)
@Cyphoidbomb: For native scripts, WP:ILL could be helpful. Kailash29792, the RfC is only applicable to articles that totally come under the scope of WP:INDIA. Infoboxes can have numerous parameters. It's not necessary that all fields need to be filled. Vensatry (talk) 16:09, 18 May 2017 (UTC)
Kailash caught my typo. (Fixed above) So Vensatry, with the diff above, does Kabali come totally under the scope of WP:INDIA? Given how rarely members of that WikiProject even participate at ICTF, I could see a solid argument a local consensus could be established if members of ICTF feel that it's warranted. I could see issues with Baahubali, where people might be pissy about including Tamil in the infobox or Hindi (apparently much of the money made has been from the Hindi dub as people have been noting at List of highest-grossing and elsewhere) but that seems more like the exception than the rule. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 01:58, 19 May 2017 (UTC)
It does; it was in fact directed and funded by Tamil filmmakers. I, personally, don't see a reason why native scripts be added to English Wikipedia articles. It's not just a case of Baahubali alone, but with articles like Rajinikanth as well. In fact, when I started around here, a guy was adamant to add Malayalam script to Kamal Haasan based on an emotional interview by the actor to a Malayalam media. If knowledge about scripts is important, as I said earlier, let them follow the inter-wiki links. I was able to find a few sources when I was working in this article. As for WP:ICTF, I really doubt its "existence". Vensatry (talk) 03:48, 19 May 2017 (UTC)
