iMac problem

Hi Richard RJ, I seem to recall that you have stated to be a Mac user in some old posting. I need a new hard drive for my my iMac (SMART status is failing) and wonder if you can recommend a local Mac service provider - reliable / not too expensive - in Vienna. Current info gives cost estimates from €250 to a whopping €500 (the latter being 25% of the original price of the iMac). Greetings from Vienna to Vienna. I haven't yet gotten the hang of finding my way around Wikipedia in search of information about this film, and I just happened to bumble into the link that brought me to your page. I have tried off and on for years with no success to research this film, and was pleased to see your response to my inquiry. I had tried, probably incorrectly, to contact the original responder, and today I noticed again that you also remember it. Is your recollection of it similar to mine?

So it was Peter Ustinov! Do you have any ideas about why there seems to be no trace of it on the Internet? It was not a low-budget production, which makes the lack of information all the more puzzling.

Thanks for the explanation. I wondered why you deleted on obviously relevant content and, more importantly, something obviously missing (should had been the first answer!). You did what you had to do according to this policy, now just take the content I inserted (back) as coming from me (a legit user with no link whatsoever with whoever is the banned user) ;-). I will add my signature. Someone may also apply some sanction upon the rule breaker who shouldn't have put the content (even as good as it was), but that is none of my business or ref-deskers. Banned user socks on Refdesks (etc.)

Hi, Viennese Waltz. You may recognise me as a long-time (+15 years) IP user who regularly contributes on the Reference, Help and Teahouse desks (as well as more occasionally in Article and Talk page space).

I might mention that I can recognize and generally ignore obvious trolling, and I am inclined to give borderline cases, especially if from apparent non-EFL posters, the benefit of AGF and answer straightforwardly with references.

In a recent Misc RefDesk thread "Augustine's Oak", you commented that the IP querant was [a sock of] a banned user and their post should have been deleted on sight. I don't want to encouraged banned users, but I also have no particular interest in focussing most of my efforts on their detection and extirpation. In view of this, I would like to ask how users like myself can easily recognize "on sight" that a particular poster is actually a sock of a banned user?

The post in question had no hallmarks of trolling, but was a purely factual query about an obscure point of railway operations. I myself didn't happen to know the answer, but was interested to learn it from other responders and would have answered myself had I been able.

[Edited to add] I see you have added a duplicate of your remark to another post thread, "Time capsule" on the Humanities Refdesk, from a different IP. Again, the question itself is innocuous, I myself would have answered if others had already not done so, and the answers seem of possible interest to a wide readership. (I am an ex-professional editor and once worked on a railway-related periodical, so you will understand why both queries were somewhat on my wavelength!)

Hi, thanks for your message. The background to this user is at WP:LTA/VXFC, although that page could do with some updating. Basically this guy is a pest and I wish he would go away. He's been banned from using Wikipedia for life but because he uses a dynamic IP it's very hard to block him. As I wrote earlier today, WP policy is to delete his posts on sight, even if he asks interesting questions that could be of use or benefit to the wider readership. But if someone comes along and posts good faith replies before his post gets deleted, then we tend to leave the stuff up. Myself and a few other editors have become fairly adept at spotting his posts, which are easily recognisable once you know what you are looking for. Geolocating his IP address brings up various areas of north and east London, he has a pompous, self-regarding writing style and is obsessed with the minutiae of certain topics such as calendars and public transport. I wouldn't worry too much about recognizing and reverting his posts if I were you, others will normally take care of it. The IP who posted the "who is this historian" question was not from north-east London so it definitely wasn't the banned user. --Viennese Waltz 20:28, 10 August 2019 (UTC)

Are you sure? What about the posts gives you that sense? I have developed a pretty good sense, over the years, of reading into Vote X's writing style and the way she interacts with people. That IP address made a single post to the ref desks, and I don't see anything that would lead me to believe it. Maybe I missed something...
