Bhopal[edit]

Thanking you in advance for any help you can give to the very substandard Bhopal Disaster article, with bulleted lists in the place of readable, fact-based text. There is going to be an uptick in page views now that it is back in the news with the conviction of Indian nationals June 2010. Good luck! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Garydave (talkcontribs) 20:21, 7 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Really what you should do is add references in the article using the references tag. I reccomend taking a look at Wikipedia:Citing sources, which should tell you everything you need to know about using references.WackyWace talk 14:29, 9 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You are now a Reviewer[edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

For the guideline on reviewing, see Wikipedia:Reviewing. Being granted reviewer rights doesn't change how you can edit articles even with pending changes. The general help page on pending changes can be found here, and the general policy for the trial can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. —DoRD (talk) 18:16, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

So far as I'm concerned there are only two outstanding issues to be addressed before this can be listed as a GA. The first is to clarify what "blind approach" means, and why it was blind, and the second is perhaps related to that. What time of the day or night did this accident happen? Was it in darkness? License tagging for File:UPSAirlinesFlight6crashsite.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:UPSAirlinesFlight6crashsite.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

Hi, I quite like the idea of adding a few more pictures to illustrate the artile. Perhaps cropping the Blair image you found might make it look ok. I'll have a look on Commons in the next day or so to see what else is available. In the meantime if you can help please feel free to add to the article. Cheers TheRetroGuy (talk) 22:15, 6 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Actually Blair's role in Northern Ireland is one thing I seem to have overlooked, I'll have a scout around to see if there's anything in the reviews I can use. Cheers TheRetroGuy (talk) 22:21, 6 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Good stuff. I agree it would be useful to have an image of Blair in the article, since it's his book and the article is rather empty when it comes to anything but text. I don't think that the image I added was particularly brilliant, though, since it was taken in 1998. Regards, WackyWace converse | contribs 15:33, 7 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

WikiNews?[edit]

Hi, we are wondering why you've deserted The Signpost, and continue to contribute to WikiNews, which simply paraphrases and summarises better-written and more authoritative sources in a context that no one seems to want, parading as a viable WMF project. Tony (talk) 01:04, 13 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fact is, since I hope to be a journalist when I'm older, I find Wikinews to provide excellent experience. I know you've had some difficulties with a few of the people over there, but I don't think its fair to describing it as something "parading as a viable WMF project." I'm someone who always like trying something new—I can't stand doing the same thing (in this case, writing for The Signpost) for months on end. Without a doubt I will continue contributing to The Signpost in the future—it is written by several of the best people on Wikipedia—but I'm not sure when that will be. Wackywace converse | contribs 15:37, 13 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Wackywace, OK, I'd guessed that was the reason. But pity a journalist's job where you have to write to deadline every day. Also, I fear the business model of broadsheets will have decayed almost completely when you get to being a journalist. Think of broadcast journalism, too; might be a better option. On The Signpost, my perception is that it's a more close-knit group, and copy-editing is done regularly on one's work. It is becoming more widely read in the WMF community, especially by foreigners. It's on a good trajectory. Feedback from readers is also more forthcoming. Tony (talk) 08:36, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I know what you mean. The Signpost is a fantastic publication, and indeed recently it has become much more prominent around not just Wikipedia, but also other WMF projects. There are lots of problems over at Wikinews right now, including the issue of the number of people working there—including me, it ammounts to about six. Broadsheets are in decline, yes, and much of the media is moving on to the web. But there isn't exactly an industry that hasn't suffered in the past ten years, whether it be the recession or the constant demand to make everything easier for the consumer. The problem is, wherever I apply for a job, it will be difficult to get. Wackywace converse | contribs 15:23, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Good work on the article. The only thing I would say at the moment is I'm not sure about the fair use picture. I did manage to get some pictures from the guy who has website, but for some reason I didn't get round to uploading them. I'll check my correspondence and see whether I have enough to meet the licensing requirements. Anyway, the point is that as the collapse was visible to the public and it wasn't that long ago, it is reasonably likely that a free picture could be found (particularly as the residents were dead against the supermarket so if it makes Tesco look bad they'd probably be happy to release it!) Please review the comment(s) below and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! SPhilbrickT 12:17, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

In MacArthur Airport disaster, the term "propeller" occurs a number of times, sometimes spelled that way, and sometimes spelled "propellor". I think the latter is just a typo, but just wanted to make sure.

I also see "maneuverer" in a quote. I don't have access to the source, so don't want to change it if it is a faithful replication of the quote. Could you check?

On the discussion page of List of bacon dishes you wrote that you planned to expand all the sections in an attempt to bring it to FL status, but almost a month later, the process has not yet been completed.

The article, as it stands, lacks continuity - not only with regard to the balance of information, but also because you've altered the size of the photos relating to your edits, making all the others too small for their boxes. Internet linguistics GA nomination[edit]

Hi there, thanks for helping out with the WP:GAN backlog by closing/quick failing Talk:Internet linguistics/GA2. The nominator seems to be fairly inexperienced though, and given that the first nomination was quicked failed for the reason that the peer review was still open, I checked the history of the talkpage. I believe that the nominator was under the impression that the peer review had been closed (with this edit). It might have been worth checking with the nominator to avoid them having to nominate again. No real harm done, but with such a long backlog, if the article had been in the queue for a while, I imagine it would have been frustrating for a new user for it to have been removed on a technicality, when most articles wait weeks to be reviewed anyway. This article has recently failed to be promoted to a Featured Article, and quick-failed one good article nomination. That's already a bit discouraging! Working out the intricacies of Wikipedia can take some time. Sometimes it's worth waiting the time it takes to drop a note to an editor to check that they understand what's gong on. I hope this doesn't sound too patronising! It's just that lots of potentially good editors get put off by bureaucracy before they really get to know how Wikipedia works. :)--BelovedFreak 12:04, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Review of the year[edit]

Did we have this last year? You do get very good ideas!

Not sure about reviewing featured content. Choosing the best? Let me talk about this with dabomb87.

Any ideas for humour? Some Signpost prizes for the most embarrassing wiki-moment, the biggest drama, lamest post/thread, biggest windbag, etc? Humour and "embarrassing incidents" need a wide net to catch. I wonder whether a few people could be emailed to cast the net? Best assembled off-wiki, of course. I could ask a few people myself, and if anything comes up, I'll pass to you or Mono. Tony (talk) 11:06, 21 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hey. You had weighed in at the first FAC for South Park (season 13), which got hung up largely because of the image. Now there is a second FAC discussion ongoing, where once again the image is dominating the conversation. At the FA delegate's suggestion, I am asking everyone who participated in the first FAC to weigh in once again, if it's not too much trouble, but please comment on the full set of FA criteria rather than just the image fair use rationale, so we can work toward a consensus on the overall FAC. Thanks! — Hunter Kahn 17:47, 21 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

DC-6[edit]

Hi Ww, the addition of the new external links was because there was an ongoing worldwide concern about the design of the aircraft and its systems, which inevitably led to a grounding of the type. The first of the problems surfaced with in-flight fires that were also related to the basic design of the aircraft. It was a somewhat ground-breaking type and that subsequently was reflected in fatal accidents and hull losses attributed to the design flaws, rather than the usual "pilot error." FWiW, check the last changes. Bzuk (talk) 17:50, 2 January 2011 (UTC).[reply]

I'm considering the latest move was a "hissy f#t" as the submissions made were in no way jeopardising the FA review. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 18:03, 2 January 2011 (UTC).[reply]
In considering the introduction of a type that had experienced issues with design faults that were amplified and punctuated by aircraft accidents. The 1955 disaster was another of the fatal events that could be attributed to Douglas aircraft technical problems. FWiW, a blog is not necessarily excluded as a source, especially if written or provided by an established source. Again, I see that this is a personal project and I can redo some of the revision to allay fears that they will be challenged in a FA review. Bzuk (talk) 18:29, 2 January 2011 (UTC).[reply]

The DYK project (nominate) 06:02, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

Hello Wackywace. Congratulations on your commendable efforts to expand the story of the Ghost Flight! I have done some copy-editing to add some extra polish to an excellent article. There is a small number of problems that I haven’t attempted to tackle:

  • crashed flying between Perth, Western Australia and the mining town of Leonora, Western Australia. No, it didn’t crash between Perth and Leonora. Misleading for most readers.
  • The registration VH-SKC is mentioned three times. The one under Background is probably redundant. The Accident Summary box calls it the tail number. American registrations contain a number but Australian registrations don’t. Australian registrations are never called tail number, especially as they are usually on the fuselage.
  • Nice photograph of CASA’s Headquarters in Woden Valley but it is of doubtful relevance to the article, especially as construction of the building did not commence until 2005 and CASA did not begin to occupy it until late 2006.

Once again, a great effort on your part. Keep it up. Dolphin (t) 05:59, 9 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

That's fantastic news. You've done a great job on it so congratulations. I'll have a read through it either tonight or tomorrow, but I reckon it could go for FAC. Peer reviews are useful to establish if there's anything else which needs to be added. I put it up for peer review when I was working on it and got some helpful advice, but I'll leave it up to you to decide whether you want to do that. Cheers an well done again. The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Central American Airways Flight 731 until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on good quality evidence, and our policies and guidelines.

The article 1973 DeKalb-Peachtree Airport Learjet 24 crash you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needed to be addressed. If these are fixed within seven days, the article will pass, otherwise it will fail. See Talk:1973 DeKalb-Peachtree Airport Learjet 24 crash for things which need to be addressed. Jappalang (talk) 03:31, 18 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The article 1973 DeKalb-Peachtree Airport Learjet 24 crash has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

A non-notable non-commercial aircraft accident with no sign that it is unusual or meets the general notability guidelines

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Invitation to the Bacon Challenge 2012[edit]

Hello! You have been invited to take part in the Bacon Challenge 2012. In case you don't know or need a refresher, the Bacon Challenge is an annual celebration of bacon on Wikipedia in which editors come together to help create, expand, and improve Wikipedia's coverage of bacon. The event lasts all the way through National Pig Day 2012, giving participants plenty of time to work at their pleasure. In addition to the Bacon Challenge is the Bacon WikiCup 2012, a side event to the Challenge in which all bacon-related contributions done by those participating in the Challenge are submitted and scored by the scorekeeper (me) based on the scoring chart. At the end of the Challenge, the user with the most points in the Bacon WikiCup will win a shiny trophy for their userpage. In addition, the users who score the highest in specific categories (not yet finalized, but the categories include most image uploads, most article creations, most DYK submissions, and more) will win barnstars. Finally, all participants will receive a medal. While the awards are nice, in the end, the important thing is to have fun and enjoy what we're all here for, which is improving Wikipedia.

If you decide to participate, great! You may add your name to the participants list at the main page of the Bacon Challenge 2012, and pick up the userbox for your userpage if you desire. Signing up for the Challenge will also automatically enter you into the Bacon WikiCup. If you don't wish to participate, that's fine too - maybe next year! In the meantime, if you know anyone who might also be interested in participating, feel free to invite them! The Challenge is open to anyone and accepts participants at any time, so feel free to let anyone who might be interested know.

Note that I, the scorekeeper of the Bacon WikiCup, will be on vacation starting on the 18th of June all the way up until the 5th of July. I will have limited access to the internet, so I may or may not be able to score users' contributions during this time. Sorry for any delay in scoring (but since the Challenge lasts for more than half a year, there's no rush, right? (= ).

I'm looking forward to another fun, successful year. Thanks! ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 00:47, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
