Bismillah or Basmala[edit]

Somewhat. Actually, bismillah (Arabic: بسم الله bis-mil-laah) is not one word. It is actually 3 words: bi=with/in + ism=name + Allah=Allah/God. Whereas, basmalah (Arabic: بسملة bas-ma-lah) is one word. Bismillah is a portion of the verse Bismillah-ir-Rahman-ir-Rahim (usually translated as In the name of Allah the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful), whereas Basmalah is a name for this verse/phrase. I was just reading some Arabic articles on Basmala. I came to the conclusion that: Basmala is derived by condensing Bismillah-ir-Rahman-ir-Rahim (more like a Portmanteau). It either refers to the whole verse or the act of reciting or saying Bismillah-ir-Rahman-ir-Rahim.

What I meant to say (at the Talk page of Ayah) was that the way you added the inline translation does not make much sense. I believe that translation is not necessary at that place, moreover, Basmala does not itself mean "In the name of God", it refers to the verse "In the name of God". If we must, we can add a note there that briefly describes what Basmala is. Else, the word Basmala appears as a WikiLink there, one can navigate to the page Basmala and find out what Basmala is. --Wahj-asSaif (talk) 22:11, 20 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Basmala or Bismillah or whatever name they have, they all refer to the first verse of the Qur'an, verse 1:1, please edit Ayah so I can see what you mean.
