Hi Wally/Graham,

sorry, I seem to have missed your other two emails. Where did you send/post them? I'm not sure what you mean about my having removed my email address, because it was never there! To answer your point, many contributors to Wikipedia (possibly most of them) maintain a degree of privacy and anonymity by using a nickname, and an email address is not a necessary requirement. There can be quite heated arguments over editing policy and decisions at times, and I would imagine it is a great relief to be able to leave them within the Wikiworld at times, and not have them boiling over into your personal email inbox!

I imagine you wanted to contact me because I removed your first contributions to Green Man? Have you had a chance to read What Wikipedia is not yet (see link below)? You will find that linking to commercial websites is discouraged. Self-promotion is also frowned upon, as it is likely to break the NPOV (neutral point of view) guidelines (so I would suggest that you mark your first submission for deletion!).

Of course, you can submit articles, or add to them, in any areas where you have personal expertise or knowledge, so long as it is externally verifiable by an independent source. By the way, can you provide some third-party evidence for the historical Australian use of Green Man motifs mentioned in your latest edit? (I'm quite prepared to believe it, because builders of the Victorian era used similar pattern-books around the world, but the wiki-police do like their verifiable sources.) ;-)

Green Man Content[edit]

G'day Si,

Yeah sorry that I didn't understand the proccess. I assume you didn't get my two earlier messages...

so what I basically said was... That I thought it was funny that you removed my link because it was to a commercial website. This is funny because the amount of money I would make from stonecarving doesn't even pay for my materials let alone running a business. I will have to take some shots of some early Australian green men ...but the point I was alluding to was that the Green Men that i do are unique in that I use native Australian vegitation for my designs rather than European plants. I did not know how to upload pictures at that point so I couldn't add an example of my work...again this wasn't just blatant self promotion ..but an honest attempt at adding another chapter to the Green Man story. Thanks for replying to me in such a polite and level headed way... I was worried that I would be expelled from Wiki forever. I know what you mean about "commercial", as I trained as a fine artist myself, I can relate to that. Unfortunately it is the smaller, and probably less-profitable, enterprises that seem to fall foul of the Wikipedia ruling. Once an artist or enterprise, of whatever sort, becomes well-known, then they seem to also become worthy of a Wikipedia entry! Unfortunately few of us can compete on that level, particularly in the art world. It seems you have to be dead (Henry Moore, say) or notorious (Damien Hirst) to warrant a page, but there'll always be not-particularly-notable people (such as Pete Gilbert for example) who manage to sneak a page in under the radar... for a while!
