GOCE drive newsletter[edit]

Invitation from the Guild of Copy Editors

The Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in their November 2011 Backlog elimination drive, a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on November 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on November 30 at 23:59 (UTC). We will be tracking the number of 2010 articles (and specifically will be targeting the oldest three months), as we want to copy edit as many of these as possible. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits more than 4,000 words, and special awards will be given to the top 5 in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words". We hope to see you there! – Your drive coordinators: Diannaa, Chaosdruid, The Utahraptor, Slon02, and SMasters.

Please see WP:OWN. You do not own the content posted on Wikipedia. Any article is open for editing by any editor. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 17:04, 1 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Didn't say I own the content, just that we were using our own material to populate the page and thus didn't infringe copyrights. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gaiavs (talkcontribs) 17:38, 1 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, you did assert ownership, as you very explicitly told me not to edit the page. The fact is that, while the text you copied is fine for the NIH website, where the NIH is interested in promoting its efforts and the value of its employees, such text (whether copyrighted or not) is inappropriate for a neutral encyclopedia article. Wikipedia has guidelines, and all articles must follow them. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 17:42, 1 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please keep Foser Natural Gas/Oil page[edit]

Please do not delete the page for Foster Natural/Gas Oil Report. It is a page for a reputable economic consultancy company called Foster Associates, Inc. It is a major natural gas and oil industry player in operation since 1956. They are a direct competitor of FERC and Platts. Platts has a wikipedia page and Foster should as well. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Katya Foster (talkcontribs) 19:57, 1 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I can find no indication that this particular company has significant impact in the industry. The oil/gas industry is replete with consultancies; not all of them are notable. FERC is an agency of the United States Government, and has a fair amount of inherent notability because of that. The Platts article is poorly sourced, but a Google search generates lots of hits. A Google news search on "Foster Natural Gas Report" shows no hits, while a global Google search on the same terms shows mainly primary sources (i.e. hits within the Foster site itself or business listings for Foster). If you can provide some sources indicating significant coverage in independent, reliable sources, you might be able to save the article from deletion.
If you believe the article is worth keeping, you are free to say so at the articles for deletion discussion. Unfortunately, your user name would indicate a close connection with the organization, which may reduce the credence given to your arguments in the matter. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 20:06, 1 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I know that my page was placed in the deleted section by you. Please remove this and confirm my page. It is a legitimate page for a well established company. You claim that Foster is unknown in the oil and natural gas business. What makes you say that? What are your credentials to be making such judgements? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Katya Foster (talkcontribs) 22:51, 1 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Your page was nominated for deletion by me. It has not yet been deleted. Once the nomination has been made, the notice cannot be removed from the article until the discussion has completed. A discussion will ensue at the location I have provided to you and consensus will be reached among several editors as to whether the article merits inclusion or not.
For the record, I did not claim that Foster is unknown in the oil and gas business; I have no basis of such knowledge. I said it is apparently unknown outside of that business, based on the lack of results when searching for the company in general Google or Google news. If you can prove otherwise, please do so. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 23:09, 1 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am not making pleas. You flagged a legitimate article which you had no right to flag. You yourself state that you know nothing about the oil industry and are making your judgements based on google. You say you didnt find our company on google? How carefully did you look? I need this page running tomorrow. Please help me. I understand that you cannot undo what you did, but please speak to other editors or get people to vote this page as ligitimate so that it can work and get the attention it deservs. If Platts can have a page on wikipedia so can Foster. Otherwise, its not fair. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Katya Foster (talkcontribs) 00:47, 2 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Why do you need this page running? That sounds kind of like you might be getting paid to write the page, which is strongly discouraged. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 11:29, 2 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ok I am really getting tired of this. You have no right to do this. I will fight you on this. Who gave you a right to decide who is and who is not a legitimate business. If you are so interested talk to every major oil company in the US and you will learn what Foster is. I am not getting paid to be making any pages. I simply feel that it is unfair that Platts has a page and Foster does not. However, the fact that you are fighting Foster so hard on trying to create a page makes me feel that you must work for Platts and are trying to make them a monopoly in the market. This goes against all the rules. Either keep the Foster page or you need to delete Platts as well. Or are they paying you personally to keep them? Katya_Foster — Preceding unsigned comment added by Katya Foster (talkcontribs) 15:56, 2 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm a software engineer working in the aerospace industry and really don't give a hoot about the oil and gas industry at all. I found your page as a new page patroller and ascertained by a Google search that there are not sufficient sources to verify the notability of this company. Because of this, I nominated the page for deletion. Deletion of the page is by no means certain -- the discussion is a process and many other editors can enter into the process. If you feel that the company is notable, please say so at the proper forum (to which you have been directed multiple times). However, just because Platts has a page, this does not mean that your company also deserves a page. (See WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS.) It doesn't really mean that Platts deserves a page -- that's a matter for a different discussion.
Since you appear to be taking a hostile turn toward me personally, I would ask you to refrain from further comment on my talk page. Please address your concerns about the article to the proper AFD discussion. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 16:17, 2 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I presume you are talking about the username warning I posted on your user talk page. You are discouraged about writing about people you know personally, because of the difficulty of maintaining a neutral point of view about such subjects. However, the real problem is that your name matches the name of the company that Koen Olthuis has created, and so it appears that you are editing on behalf of that company. This practice is not allowed. (See WP:ORGNAME.) WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 16:45, 9 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Bretby Art Pottery: Unreliable Source?[edit]

Saw your note about Melanie Paling's "Art Pottery, Accepting the Inevitable" suggested as an unreliable source. I know that around 1986 the author was in the course of graduating from Stourbridge College (an Art College) where she was studying glass sculpture. I imagine that it was part of her graduation work. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jimskea (talkcontribs)

Perhaps so, but if the work is not published and generally available (which does not necessarily mean available at EVERY library, but at least at SOME library), then it cannot be used to verify facts in the article. It's not like the author is going to welcome me walking up to her door and saying "Can I please see your Master's Thesis so I can verify that fact in the Wikipedia article?". And I'm the king of Saudi Arabia. Or am I? How would you know? How am I to know that you are the VP of your company? Just saying that you have the right to post the material is not sufficient. There is a process for donating copyrighted materials, but I wouldn't bother because, in addition to being a blatant copy of Core MSO's page, it is also blatantly promotional, which is not allowed. Griffin's Tower[edit]

Dear WikiDan61.

I'm a student. I participated in Wikipedia workshop at my university and wrote my first article "Griffin's tower" today. This cultural site is not really known but quite important as a city legend for Saint Petersburg citizens. However when I published my article few minutes later I found that it was proposed to delete. I find this proposal demotivating. As a new wikipedia user I don't feel welcomed here and I don't see how our knowledge can be shared if somebody think it's not significante enough. If you think my article is not well written then you as experienced user should give me some hints instead of proposing to delete the article.

I hope you will understand my disapointment. Best wishes, Ptizza. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ptizza (talkcontribs) 15:53, 6 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I do understand your disappointment, and you are free to remove the proposed deletion template if you desire. However, please understand that Wikipedia has criteria for what should and should not be included. You are encouraged to familiarize yourself with these guidelines, and with the various other guidance that Wikipedia offers. (I have added the standard new-user welcome message to your talk page -- it contains links to very useful guidelines on how to properly contribute to Wikipedia.)
In this particular case, Griffin's tower does not appear to meet the criteria for inclusion. It is a tower, of no particular special design or architecture -- a relic of a bygone industrial complex. If you can find references to the tower in reliable sources indicating that it has been the topic of significant coverage (not just local trivia), then please add such references to the article (for instructions, see WP:Citing sources). As it stands, the article provides no indication that this place merits inclusion.
I hope you can get past this disappointment and use the provided guidance to become a valuable contributor.

Feedback[edit]

It is not hostile to defend my actions. I never said or implied I was superior to others, I simply said that I make calls on the page patrol. Users like you, who feel the need to continuously post on my wall these half story warnings are starting to make me hostile. I do not know exactly, what posts you are referring to as hostile, but I certainly feel like I have been the result of hostile posts. I will give an example, yesterday I was reported to the admins for vandalism because I removed comments from my talk page and asked the user kindly to stop warning me. The user responded by telling me I was out of line and reported me. I am getting tired of checking my boards every morning to find these unnecessary comments on my page about my behavior. I have been responding to these comments, many of which are ungrounded, and it is very annoying. If you have a problem with my behavior, report me. Otherwise, please go back to your work so I can go back to making wikipedia better. Zzaffuto118 (talk) 17:32, 7 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    • I now see you were referring to my subpage, I am not even going to justify that page. If you read a little carefully, I linked that page to multiple wikipedia policy pages and just tried to explain my views. Again, report me if I am out of line, but I really don't think that is the case. Zzaffuto118 (talk) 17:35, 7 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I will just ask you this ,rhetorical, question: Did you honestly read past the part where I called myself a "police officer", or did you just stop there...? I ask this because the rest of the article is exactly contradictory to what you say about me considering myself superior to anyone.Zzaffuto118 (talk) 18:59, 7 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, yes, I did read the entire page rather carefully, and I found the tone very aggressive. Use of the term "illegal" (even if placed in quotes) connotes your role as one of law enforcment. A better term might be "problematic" -- connoting that the articles are not at all illegal, but really only have problems with regards to Wikipedia policies. Similarly, the rest of the article, while relying on Wikipedia policy, just comes across as overly and unnecessarily hostile. That's just my read as a disinterested observer. You can take the feedback for what it's worth. I have no intention of reporting or complaining about the page; I'm just trying to give some friendly advice. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 13:25, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm really not sure what motivated you to post on my wall, but your "help" is not helpful, and to the contrary is actually very anti-productive. You are just playing semantics like "illegal" vs "problematic". It's not aggressive, my tone is clear. Anyone who takes offense at that tone of writing would probably start crying if they ever had to talk to a lawyer, or any professional. I know wikipedia is open to everybody, but sometimes its better to pick your battles. Note: I would not ever say "pick your battles" on a public page...because that is against the spirit of this wiki. Zzaffuto118 (talk) 23:11, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Last thing, look at the user box for the new page patrol... its a cop! Does that connote law enforcement too? I think writing in red and underlining "I am not an administrator" removes any remaining connotations of authority. Zzaffuto118 (talk) 23:14, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • "Criminal", even in quotes, is simply inappropriate. It's incorrect (there is no crime--it's a ridiculous notion on this website), it's not funny to contributors of new pages (if humor is what the quotes are supposed to mean), and it's bitey. Did you link to WP:BITE anywhere? Now, I think WikiDan and I have disagreed on some issues, but here we're in agreement. Between the two of us, we have over 120,000 edits on Wikipedia; you have less than 600, and less than 200 in article space. You could consider taking our advice. Change the wording. Thank you. Drmies (talk) 05:39, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

WinterIsComingOdran (talk) 14:12, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The fact that The Cork Youth Association is a member of a larger umbrella organization that may (or may not) be notable does not make this organization notable per se. Notability is not inherited. Since the article does not make any assertions of notability OTHER than this membership, I nominated for speedy deletion under the said criteria. (The choice of criteria defines my reason for nominating and really doesn't need any further clarification.) If you can show that the organization is notable, than please feel free to do so. The fact that they don't even have a working website yet indicates to me that the organization is probably quite new and has not yet accomplished anything. When they do accomplish anything notable, they may meet the criteria for inclusion. But that has not yet been demonstrated. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 14:17, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Save Guggul Movement[edit]

Respected Sir/Madam, I think that Save Guggul Movement is a conservation movement like the Green Belt Movement. It should not be merged into COmmiphora wightii. Commiphora wighrii weblink is allready provided in this page. Commiphora wighrii weblink page is focoused on the plant description, its botany and medicinal uses — Preceding unsigned comment added by NehaIndia (talkcontribs)

With respect, the Save Guggul Movement is focused on conserving a single species, the commiphora wightii, while the Green Belt Movement is a much more widely focused effort to promote "environmental conservation, community development and capacity building". (Quoted from the Green Belt Movement page.) Since the Save Guggul Movement's aim is so sharply focused, and since the only reason one would want to save the plant is because of its medicinal uses, it makes great sense to include the information about the plant conservation movement on the page about the plant, rather than in a completely separate article.
Because the discussion of this merge requires broader community input, I am going to copy these comments onto the appropriate talk page, so they can become part of the broader discussion. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 21:10, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, wait for others' comments -- allow the discussion to progress for a time. When the time is right, I can help you merge the content if that is the community's decision.

SJC[edit]

I moved St. Joseph's College, Bandarawela to User:Webcrewsjc/St. Joseph's College, Bandarawela - see User talk:Webcrewsjc - while you were cleaning it up. I have moved your version to the same place for a tidy edit history. You can leave it there and make Webcrewsjc add the refs, add the refs yourself and move it back or even move it back without refs. I don't mind which. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 19:54, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The history was a bit messy. The school exists; that's about all I could find from my searches. The rest is clearly the creating of a loyal student. My cleanup attempted to address that, but without references, I think your userfication is probably for the best. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 20:52, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I revived the article, in articlespace with references. This may have been a case of WP:DNB, starting with an errant bot that claimed the original article copyvio'd itself (apparently the bot gets confused when an article title contains an apostrophe). -- P.T. Aufrette (talk) 03:51, 16 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Michael Jen (BJJ) deletion[edit]

I have referenced the page correctly that some of the information is copied from. Also, I own the site it is copied from. please Secondly, it said it was advertising,Please let me know how to get this page up. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JiuJitsuSanJose (talkcontribs) 02:55, 13 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Simply claiming ownership is not sufficient. Since accounts at Wikipedia are essentially anonymous, anyone could claim ownership to anything. There is a proper way to donate copyrighted materials, but in this case I wouldn't bother because the copyrighted material was intended to promote Jen's career and teaching studio, which is disallowed. If you can find evidence of significant coverage of Jen in reliable sources, you could rewrite his biography in your own words, citing those reliable sources, but otherwise, Jen may not merit an article at Wikipedia. Deirdre McNamer[edit]

Hi WikiDan,

Thanks for your edits to the Deirdre McNamer article. I returned the copy-paste template because it's still basically a copy paste from the url.--CaroleHenson (talk) 17:57, 16 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The information is valid, and there are few choices of how to present it. If you can find a wording that presents the same information without being a copy-paste, please do so. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 18:00, 16 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Probably the best way is for the original author to add more material - and word based upon the content. Another option is to at least attempt to reword - such as changing order, using some different words, etc. I'll update the author's talk page with these suggestions.--CaroleHenson (talk) 18:05, 16 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

adding links - problems[edit]

hello,

thanks for you message,

I am not sure I understand

I am an academic researcher...and am trying to clarify the concepts around 'job rotation'

there are however a number of common synonyms....as such the evidence base for the work will not come up if the terms are not linked.

I have tried to link within wikipedia to make the site more useful.

I have also linked to a key external website - with loads of research papers, reference lists etc.

This is not a commerical enterprise at all!

does this help?

trying to be helpful to you and searchers,

b.wishes Patrick rpi123 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rpi123 (talkcontribs) 16:45, 17 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Patrick, if you would like to clarify the concepts of job rotation, then edit the job rotation article. Creating lots of side articles that basically say the same thing makes the process of maintaining Wikipedia impossible. (If a fact changes, should we have to track down that fact in 10 or 12 different articles?) Also, referencing an "academic paper" that is only available on a private corporation's website is not terribly helpful. If Dr. Coyne's research is so valuable, it should be published in a legitimate journal where it can be peer-reviewed. Please stop adding links to this site into articles all over Wikipedia. Such activity is defined as "link spam" and it is a quick way to get yourself blocked from editing at all. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 16:49, 17 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

removal of contributions to job rotation page - help please[edit]

Hello I am new to wikipedia and do not understand very much about the system and communications as yet. Apologies if not communicating as per your rules....lots to learn.

I am a nurse working for the UK NHS - not for profit,

I have been working on job rotation research for over ten years...and have edited the job rotation site with resutls of research from extensive critial literature review, have put in key research (there is not that much about) - which has gone.

It seems as though you think I am advertising...not in any business and only keen to get the job rotation research out there - others (see website workrotation.com) and of course my own - which has been independently evaluated.

Poor use of job rotation is harmful to individuals, very wasteful, and thus some useful resesarch and models should help folk reduce waste and increase effective use - in public sector organisation and others.

Does this help?

The page could be v.v. useful to all sorts of folk internationally - I am only trying to beef it up.

Sarraino theory[edit]

Hello, I have removed your CSD-G4 on Sarraino theory, as although there has been a previous AfD discussion, that discussion is closed as speedy deletion. Thus, unless the new article also fits another CSD, we cannot G4 it. Thank you. ZZArch talk to me 22:06, 23 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I noticed that. I self-reverted my DB, but we must have edited simultaneously. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 22:07, 23 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation link notification[edit]

Hi. When you recently edited Catpac, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Scalar (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

The article author asked on my talk page for the article to be restored, because he added references after the delete !votes were made on 20 Jan. I have checked his edits after that point, and the only ones which might possibly affect the outcome are:

  • changing the link "Shore Kodaki"
from http://www.soundunwound.com/music/abdolreza-razmjoo/20547200 Soundunwound.com
to http://www.songtexte.com/artist/abdolreza-razmjoo-6bd0e6ca.html Songtexte
  • adding two sections:

Sources and Further reading
  • Weekly magazine Chelcheragh,iran(February 2002)
  • Nezafati,Iraj. "Kermanshah music", Kermanshah: Taq Bostan Publications, 1998. ISBN 964-5551-11

Would these changes have affected your delete opinion? Please reply below here - I will watch this page. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 22:34, 29 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

no, these changes would not have changed my vote. The change to SongTexte is no more reliable than SoundUnwound. And the sources for further reading are not accessible to me, so although they may denote notability, I would have no way of knowing. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 03:31, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy Deletion of Eteenz[edit]

You tagged the article Eteenz for speedy deletion. The subject seems notable to me. I commented on this on the article's talk page. Liam987 (talk) 13:43, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If you feel the article is not suitable for speedy deletion, you are free to remove the tag. When doing so, please try to provide a citation in a reliable source to indicate that this brand is something more than just another run of the mill clothing company. (Presence in one or two locations is not really notable. Presence in many locations and recognition as a major retail establishment in India would be notable.) WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 14:46, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I removed the speedy deletion tag, but I will tag this page as possibly not meeting Wikipedia's notability guidelines. I made this decision based on information on the companies website that seemed to indicate it is a fairly major brand in India. [2]. I also posted this explanation on the talk page of the article Liam987 (talk) 15:14, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

1990-91 NHL Hat Tricks[edit]

The article is now referenced and I believe it is notable. I can merge it with the 1990-91 NHL season for easier accessibility.

Best regards.Friedengeber (talk) 14:46, 2 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No, I wouldn't merge it -- it is too long a table to fit comfortably into an article. A link from the season article to the hat-trick article should suffice. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 14:51, 2 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry - I meant link it. Thanks! Friedengeber (talk) 15:03, 2 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

CCSH[edit]

Grazie Davide Polovineo. In this article there are historical live record... which are important for the history of music. I ask you please to remove the banner "article delete". Davide Polovineo — Preceding unsigned comment added by Polovineo (talkcontribs)

Since the article has been nominated for deletion, it will not actually be deleted until a proper discussion has taken place. You are free to add your opinion to this discussion by editing here. However, your own assertion that this series includes "historical live record" [sic] must be backed up with a reference from some reliable source.
