GOCE request[edit]

Hi WikiHelper26. I've completed the copyedit you requested for 6th Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment. I took the liberty of adding additional bibliographic info for the two books being cited. I also replaced the transcription links from CivilWarArchive.com and IAGenWeb.org with direct scans from the Internet Archive. Let me know if you have any questions or feedback. – Lord Bolingbroke (talk) 20:51, 3 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding 6th Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment, I'm not sure how to improve the article. Is there any ways I can do so (sources, etc)? --WikiHelper26 (talk) 05:10, 22 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

There's something wrong with the sentence that you added This rapid movement caused rebels to withdraw rapidity, and the object the voyage was skilled without loss. It makes no sense. Adding quality sources is nearly always helpful but adding (unsourced) sentences that don't make sense is not. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 06:42, 22 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi[edit]

Hi, and thanks for editing Wikipedia. Please be sure to share an edit summary when you are editing. You made some considerable edits in a recent political bio, without summary. While it might seem miniscule during your editing – I know how easy it can be to start banging out edits without thinking much - it saves your fellow editors (like me :) ) time when we can read your edit summary and not have to compare differences in edits. Unless it is truly a minor edit, of course. Thanks so much - I'm glad you are here and helping to improve the world's largest encyclopedia. Missvain (talk) 04:23, 25 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

There's a gadget you can add to your preferences which will prompt you to leave an edit summary; I've found it very helpful . Have fun and all the best, Miniapolis 16:13, 1 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

About Peer Review[edit]

I'm not sure what is taking too long for people to respond to the Wikipedia:Peer review/Clinton Railroad Bridge/archive1 peer review. --WikiHelper26 (talk) 17:38, 6 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I first thought ".../archive1" would be an incorrect location, but it isn't. Nothing seems to be wrong with the request, as it does appear at Wikipedia:Peer review/List of unanswered reviews. Please be patient. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 17:58, 6 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I saw this link regarding the old Clinton Railroad Bridge. Is there anyway you find Clinton Herald archive articles such as "From: The Clinton Herald, July 7, 1865, P.2 (Transcribed by a Clinton County IaGenWeb volunteer.)" and "EARLY HISTORY OF C. & N. W., The Clinton Daily Herald, February 3, 1909, INTERESTING STATISTICS CONCERNING OPENING OF THE FIRST BRIDGE. PIONEER TRAINS." (link). --WikiHelper26 (talk) 05:38, 24 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The website that's linked to lists the Clinton Public Library and the Clinton Historical Society among its resources. I'd try contacting those. Or you could try to contact the Clinton Herald itself; it still seems to exist. Huon (talk) 09:55, 24 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Huon: I'm looking for them, but I'm curious if this sentence describes the original Clinton Railroad Bridge: "Clinton’s first, 1865, bridge remained in place, essentially in the same way, until 1909.". The sentence is found in this link. --WikiHelper26 (talk) 17:44, 24 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Why wouldn't it, given that it speaks of Clinton's first bridge? The dates are not an exact match but seem reconcilable. Huon (talk) 20:55, 24 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Huon: It mentions other railroads. I just wasn’t sure if that sentence is talking about the Clinton Railroad Bridge. —WikiHelper26 (talk) 22:59, 24 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I'm trying to find a reliable source regarding the 1958 Clinton Railroad Bridge fire, but I don't know which source would work. The only sources I could find it from are this one, this one, and the The Waterways Journal (which is supposed to be found on page 99). However, there is no preview for The Waterways Journal source at all. I have three questions: 1) Would any of those three sources work (in other words, which one of the three are more reliable)? 2) Would it work if I something like this: The Waterways Journal. United States, D. T. Wright, 1958.? 3) If not, is there any reliable sources that discusses the 1958 bridge fire? --WikiHelper26 (talk) 03:22, 27 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

This discussion should be taking place on Talk:Clinton Railroad Bridge.
The first link cites sources but not in a way that seems useful.
Your second link, IAGENWEB, identifies the Clinton Herald, with dates for articles, so - while you can't use it directly - you can use it to look up the transcribed articles in the Clinton Herald archives (perhaps on microfilm or one of the online newspaper archives - though not necessarily available online for free). There's also a possibility of asking someone at the Clinton Public Library if they have access to these archives, mentioned as a resource at the IAGENWEB site, or possibly one of the other organizations listed there. It's an opportunity to recruit a collaborator!
An inexact citation is better than no citation at all, but just barely. It brings into question how you got the information that you are presenting in the article.
This is the problem you face: taking your second link at face value, and manufacturing cites based on the transcriptions, means that you have not actually verified the source. You should not be citing a source that you have not read yourself. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 06:32, 27 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Close paraphrasing/plagiarism?[edit]

As part of my copyedit, I checked this source (which seems to be copyrighted). Substantial portions of Government Bridge#First bridge are copied word-for-word from the website or very closely paraphrased. Sourced material needs to be rewritten in your own words; please see WP:PLAG and WP:COPYPASTE. All the best, Miniapolis 23:31, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
