motor paced cycle races[edit]

Will, I still don't understand how the motor paced cycle races work. Having watched a few, it seems like the guys on the dernys are just going whatever speed they want, and the cyclists keep up. Is that correct? If so, how is that a good race? Kellen ^T 10:00, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I got that the races were supposed to be exciting because of the speeds involved, but when I watched those races (in person at the 6-day race in Berlin) it seemed like a lot of the riders were pretty evenly matched, and that the winner was more dictated by how fast their derny was going... Gear ratios[edit]

You appear to have misunderstood my edit about gear ratios on fixed gear bikes. Please don't alter it again. A percentage change in gearing is not solely dependent on the number of sprocket teeth, it is also dependent on the number of chainring teeth. This is because a gear is a ratio, not an absolute. Consider a 16T sprocket and a 48T ring. The ratio is 3:1. A 17T sprocket and a 48T ring has a ratio of 2.82. The figures are different for a 50T ring. And the percentage change in gearing caused by an alteration in the number of sprocket teeth will therefore be different too. Try working it out. Yes, the gear ratios are different for a different sized chainring, but the difference between the two ratios is always the same for the same two sprockets with any size chainring.

Here's the math:

48T ring, 16T sprocket = 3:1, 48T ring, 17T sprocket = 2.82:1

% change = 6.25%

50T ring, 16T sprocket = 3.13:1, 50T ring, 17T sprocket = 2.94:1

% change = 6.25%

32T ring, 16T sprocket = 2:1, 32T ring, 17T sprocket = 1.88:1

% change = 6.25%

This is the formula I used to get % change in gear ratios:

%change = ((GearRatio1 -GearRatio2) / GearRatio2) * 100)

or

%change = (((ChaingRing1 / Sprocket1) - (ChainRing2 / Spocket2)) / (Chainring2 / Sprocket2) * 100

Since the two gear combinations we are comparing always have the same sized chainring (we can assume this because we are talking about a fixed gear bike with one chainring and a flip flop hub) we can effectively remove Chainring1 and Chainring2 from the equation since they are always equal. Giving us:

%Change = ((1/Sprocket1) - (1/Sprocket2)) / (1/Sprocket2) *100

I propose adding "for a constant sized chainring" to the end of the paragraph since perhaps this is where the confusion is arising? Will.law (talk) 07:01, 10 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
