Creationism[edit]

[1] I'm not allowed to ridicule creationism on the main page, it has to come out somewhere. I did remove the Flying Spaghetti Monster additions three times in one day, even though I'm on the poster's side :) I'm guessing by your user page that you lean more towards the creationist (or at least religious bent). Should you be offended or merely think it is tacky, I will remove the 'nutter' comment. NPOV; bringing together creationists and evolutionists since... 2007 I guess. Look forward to your work on the page; I notice you are fairly new as a user, so I'd suggest giving your framework for the possible largish changes a couple of days, perhaps even posting messages on regular Creationism contributors' talk pages to let them have input on the changes. But, I think I evolved from a monkey, so what do I know? I jest, I really do look forward to your suggestions, do you know how to make sub-pages? WLU 20:49, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey wow, I'm a Wikipedian! I got a real, genuine post on my talk page! :) Thanks WLU! No, you don't need to remove 'nutter', I can sympathise (though I don't agree of course).
I'll get back to editing the page on Friday, since I should actually be studying at this point in time - Calculus, Project Management and Theoretical Cartography exams are all waiting for me... WolfieInu 06:31, 30 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Felicitations on now being a 'real' wikipedian. Gosh, they grow up so fast... You might be interested in WP:ADOPT if you want to speed up your learning curve.

There are 2 ways of responding on talk pages, and you did both. You can reply where the message appears, or you can reply on the other user's talk page. I prefer the latter because you are much more certain the other person knows about your comment, though the former allows discussion to remain unbroken. It's your preference, but some users will have a box at the top of their page to specify which they prefer.

I spare you from death... this time. Bum bum buuuuummmmmm. There is no good onomatopoeia for that. WLU 11:30, 30 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to the time-sucking monster that is Wikipedia. Wait until you decide to stop watching all the pages you edit. It's coming. Go study! I have work to do. WLU 12:37, 30 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Creationism: Disambiguation[edit]

Okay, so here's my proposal...

Pater Noster[edit]

Wolfie, since you have the Lord's Prayer in Gothic on your page, why not include a link to this site? Convent of Pater Noster. Just a thought. So Afrikaans is you native language, eh? Interesting to me that I can read Afrikaans more easily than Dutch, although I've never studied either enough to claim any level of proficiency. I guess it must be the German and English influence on the language...maybe? •Jim62sch• 19:28, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Pater Noster link - thanks, good idea ... even though I'm not Catholic :)
  • Influences on Afrikaans: yes definitely, English and German were contributors to Afrikaans, although some of the similarity can be attributed to convergent evolution ;) -- WolfieInu 19:51, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
PS. What do you read in Afrikaans? Langenhoven's poetry? Highly outdated SF like Fritz Deelman? Or...? -- WolfieInu 20:03, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Nah, nothing high-brow, just occasionally a newspaper on-line, and if something comes with instructions in many languages, Afrikaans is sometimes one of them, so I'll read it, see what I get out of it, and then see how close I was. Dutch is on my to-learn list (after I get done with Swedish), so then I can really start to figure out the diffs betwen Dutch and Afrikaans.
Basically, I'm a language geek, something that really paid off when the US decided to invade Iraq. I knew that our (American) press was not covering everything so I read articles from other countries in six languages to get the full story. Yep, I'm just a geek.  :) •Jim62sch• 20:24, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Being a language geek is a very good thing, that way you don't get bogged down in English/American cultural perceptions. At least not that easily. -- WolfieInu 20:30, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's what I've found -- It's very enlightening to read any news story from the perspectives of other nations/peoples. •Jim62sch• 22:57, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I also read instructions in other languages and try to guess what it says, but since I'm limited to languages that share German or English ancestry/influence, I usually don't get very far :)
What is interesting to read from time to time is Afrikaans SF. Not much of that around, but it usually has some quite unique elements, at least the older ones like "Die Oorlewendes" and "Fritz Deelman". A greater focus on nationalism than is common for SF, at least the kind I usually get into contact with.
I'm trying to write my own (English) SF novel. I did get to page 170 when it suddenly struck me that the story had degenerated into pointless rubbish. So I scrapped it and started anew. One element I'm trying to incorporate is a Germanic battle language of some kind, but how do I make it indescipherable to English readers? -- WolfieInu 12:57, 5 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've started a few books and only one is likely to get done -- a series of short stories poking fun at American customs, thought patterns, etc.
Did you really mean "indescipherable to English readers?" or did you mean understandable? I'm confused...but what else is new?  :) •Jim62sch• 10:51, 6 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I meant un-dis-non-understand-able. ;)
A series of short stories... yes, that's an idea. My problem with writing longer pieces is that I only have one central thing that I want to say. When I've said it, I'm lost as to what should happen next. -- WolfieInu 10:57, 6 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

blatjang[edit]

Hi there. Does it have a strong smell? I think u are referring to belacan. ќמшמφטтгמtorque 14:55, 18 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ya sorry i cant help you. I dont think ive come across any fruity type of chutney in Malaysia, except the Indian types of chutneys. I thought u were referring to belacan because it seems to sound the same: belacan is pronounced something like "bɜlatʃan". Yes perhaps asking the Javanese (or other Indonesian ethnics) is the better way. From what i see online, blatjang seems definitely Indonesia/Javanese. ќמшמφטтгמtorque 16:04, 20 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Expanding Article on Hendrik Frensch Verwoerd[edit]

There appears to be a group of individuals who consistently impede any constructive additions to the article in question. Undoing and blocking all editions pertaining to users outside their nest of selections.

The editing recently done to this article has been referenced to credible sources, some already available on other related articles, regardless of the fact of the neutrality displayed in the additions manifested in the facts and phraseology in use.

It would be detrimental to Wikipedia if a consensus is not reached on this question pertaining to all articles not only this one. If the material being added is not significant it would be understandable, yet where the facts could be correct and the community interested in the subject at hand are in conflict with the manner of its publication, the rational and professional solution would be to offer an alternative to the edition being proposed. Simply deleting and blocking any attempt to contribute to this and any other article in a constructive manner can only be viewed as autocratic in the least and a hypocrisy of what the globally renowned Wikipedia stands for.Wsa1 (talk) 22:51, 13 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

South African Wikimedia Chapter[edit]

Hi there. The idea of setting up a local Wikimedia chapter has been discussed by South African Wikipedians (and those associated with other Wikimedia projects) for some time now, and we want to help turn this dream into a reality. There are currently over 25 chapters established around the world, and several more planned and being discussed, but so far, none in Africa. A South African chapter, should it become a reality, would be a continental first. If you're interested in being involved in the creation of a South African Wikimedia Chapter, could you please email me directly :). Thanks and have a great World Cup Opening day, Kaydee 68 (talk) 07:33, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

South African Wikimedia Chapter update and mailing list[edit]

Hi there. Local Wikipedians have set up a mailing list where we will be discussing the formation of a local Wikimedia Chapter in South Africa. Please join the mailing list at this url https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimediaza. There is also a page set up on Meta where you can add your name if you're interested to take this idea forward. Check out http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_South_Africa. Inviting you to WikiAfrica Incubator![edit]

Hey Wolfielnu,

WikiAfrica invites you to support the Africa Incubator.

WikiAfrica is pleased to invite you as a self-declared African Wikipedian to evaluate the Africa Incubator. WikiAfrica has created the Africa Incubator to support and assist new authors, as they create their first articles and learn the ins and outs of contributing to Wikipedia.

The Africa Incubator is a ‘soft landing’ for new authors to develop articles that relate to Africa. It assists them in becoming compliant and knowledgeable of Wikipedia principles and rules. Based within the Wikipedia framework, the Africa Incubator is fully interactive and enables feedback, assistance and forums.

This is where we need your help! For the Africa Incubator to be successful, it needs the intervention, interaction and experience of Incubator Mentors. We are looking for a pool of active experienced Wikipedians to consistently participate in ’owning’ the Africa Incubator. Incubator Mentors will assist new comers through the editing process. They will also help test and expand the Africa Incubator, and will play a vital role in encouraging newcomers to be Wikipedians for life

Please visit WikiAfrica Incubator to give us your honest feedback and evaluation. WikiAfrica is a ground-breaking project that is designed to Africanise Wikipedia by generating and expanding 30,000 articles over two years. Find out more about this project here WikiAfrica. Hello,

One in Cape Town at WikiAfrica, at the Africa Centre; and the other for WikiAfrica Cameroon in Douala, at doual’art. If you are interested, please contact either Marilyn [marilyn.doualabell@doualart.org] for the WikiAfrica Cameroon call or Isla [islahf@africacentre.net] for the WikiAfrica position in Cape Town.

If you are not interested in applying, I would be very grateful if you could spread this call far and wide among your networks to ensure that both projects get excellent candidates. Here is the link for the information page: http://www.wikiafrica.net/two-wikipedians-in-residence-for-africa/
