December 2012[edit]

You have been blocked indefinitely from editing for making legal threats or taking legal action. If you think there are good reasons why you should be unblocked, you may appeal this block by adding below this notice the text {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}, but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first.

You are not allowed to edit Wikipedia while the threats stand or the legal action is unresolved.  Favonian (talk) 19:11, 20 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A path forward[edit]

I'm sorry you've been treated this way, Mr. Streiff. Unfortunately, we tend to panic whenever anything resembling a legal threat comes in, and block instinctively.

The facts of the matter are:

  • You're right, the article was being vandalized. The people vandalizing it have been blocked, and I've protected it so that only established editors can edit it for a while.
  • If you see someone is vandalizing it in the future, you can solve this by adding a notice to WP:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents or WP:Administrator intervention against vandalism.
  • Editing Wikipedia and issuing cease and desist letters don't really go hand in hand. Our policy is that you need to choose between editing, and taking legal action. This is explained in more detail on this page. Usually, problems like this can be handled quickly without resorting to legalese.
  • My preference would have been to notify you about this policy first, before blocking your account. But your account can be unblocked if you'll indicate here that you will make no further legal threats, or implied legal threats, on Wikipedia. You can still edit this page, and I'll try to keep an eye on it to watch for a response.
