Minnesota

Thanks for your research on Minnesota climate. Usually for internet refs the site is linked with the title of the page as the wikititle and "Accessed on " with a date is placed after it. Go ahead and try to update it if you like, otherwise I'll fix it tomarrow. I moved your question to the bottom of the talk age (standard location). Also dont forget to sign your name using 4 tildes (~~~~) If you have any questions feel free to ask. Also since you are ovbiously interested in minnesota you may want to join Wikipedia:WikiProject Minnesota. Thanks! -Ravedave (help name my baby) 19:11, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for being cool about the climate section. I left a note on Talk:Minnesota. -Ravedave (help name my baby) 03:40, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
After reading and copyediting your climate section I definiatly think Climate of Minnesota is a good idea for an article and I think your section is a good start. I will let you have the honor of creating the page since you wrote the much expanded weather section. -Ravedave (help name my baby) 04:09, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
I am hoping a good chunk of it will get used. Your code has more prose and less numbers, which makes it easier to read. If you don't create Climate of Minnesota I will, I was just letting you create it since you wrote most of the prose. I believe we have enough info to fill a full page in. There is enough material with your text and the text in the article. I'll cut and paste it all in there and then summarize the articles on the Minnesota page. Also you can use text from any wiki article in another. However the Climate of mlps page isn't very well reffed. -Ravedave (help name my baby) 15:44, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
Cool. also checkout my version of your weather section on Talk:Minnesota. I think its quite good. -Ravedave (help name my baby) 22:00, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
  • Does Texas have a panhandle? That statement strikes me as odd. Appraiser 06:31, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

Marching Band

Thanks for your edit to marching band. I've created a stub article for the University of Minnesota Marching Band that I would encourage you to expand (or help find someone suitable to expand it). Being a Marching Illini alum, I don't have all the background to make a great page for any other individual band, but I would like to see all of the Big Ten bands with excellent pages. Sports

FYI I am a Huskies fan :). So don't expect your Gophers POV to stand for long in the Minnesota article :) -Ravedave (help name my baby) 22:04, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

Climate

Nice. Go ahead and do what you want with the article it's not under review like Minnesota so changes aren't as big of a deal. User:Appraiser seems to be interested in it as well so you may want to leave him a message. Gimme a heads up when you are "done" with it and I will look it over for copy editing and fact checking. Thanks for your work, it is appreciated. -Ravedave (help name my baby) 21:44, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

I did a copyedit (mainly for style) and removed the tag. Not a bad article, if you have more info however, especially on the damage and results of the outbreak, please add it, as it is a bit shorter than most articles. Also, for future reference, <ref> tags go after punctuation. -Runningonbrains 22:33, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

reference citation

authorlink is the author's web site, if it exists. Most contemporary authors have them, but many web sites don't tell us the author's name.
I don't know the difference between work and title
publisher examples that I've seen are Knight-Ridder or National Geographic
date is creation date of your source
Format is usually pdf or html
doi - I have no idea
access date - the date you saw it (2006-10-11)
Paste this exactly, minus the "" and replace example with something of your choosing. (edit this page so you can see it.) Spaces and line breaks can be deleted at will. Good luck, and thanks!

Climate of MN

Climate of Minnesota looks awesome!! I have to say I am glad I had you split that section out. Have you considered nominating it for GA status? -Ravedave (help name my baby) 04:47, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia:What_is_a_good_article lists the criteria, which I think it meets, except the stability reqirement. So when you have it to a state you like, submit it. You can read more at WP:GA. HEres one that recently got promoted April_6-8,_2006_Tornado_Outbreak I guarantee it will pass. -Ravedave (help name my baby) 05:47, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
You are doing a good job, I don't see you making any major mistakes. I posted the Auto Peer review below to let you know about some of the minor formatting things that help an article. The only thing I would have you do is make sure not to link stand alone states like: 1988 or May. The reason grouped dates like October 15, 1988 are linked is because the wiki software will then display that differently based on your settings in preferences (try it out). You are doing a really good job with the references, though you may want to make a stop at the library if you try and get the article to WP:FA status. I'll try and take a good look at the article in the next week or so. -Ravedave (help name my baby) 05:48, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

To reuse that ref: <ref name=YourName /> -Ravedave (help name my baby) 06:35, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
You might find Great_Hinckley_Fire, 1918_Cloquet_Fire and Cavity_Lake_Fire usefull. Something about Boundary_Waters-Canadian_Derecho might be cool too. I actually don't know much about northern MN weather as I am only up there 2-3 times a year. That and I only have 5 more days to get Minnesota ready before I submit to WP:FAC. Intros are hard, I just have User:Kablammo write them :) -Ravedave (help name my baby) 06:52, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
I did a review of Climate of Minnesota. It is a very good article. I made some suggestions on the talk page, but they are pretty much all minor. Once the intro is expanded (the biggest problem), and addtl citations are added for fall I think it is ready for WP:GAC. After that the article needs to be peer reviewed at WP:PR, and after that it can be nominated for WP:FA. I like your writing style, do you think you can spare some time and pitch in over at Minnesota? The climate section needs better wording and copy editing the whole article for flow would be helpful. -Ravedave (help name my baby) 06:57, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
Don;t worry about adding everything, those were just a few things I randomly picked out, you can use your discretion. Not sure about the page numbers. on Minnesota I used a named ref, and when I called it I put the page number in like <ref name=foo>Page23</ref> so the only place you see the pages is in the wikitext. You could poke around at WP:MOS if you want -Ravedave (help name my baby) 23:01, 25 November 2006 (UTC)
Should the derecho sentence go under wind? -Ravedave (help name my baby) 01:48, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
Good point, makes sense in its current spot. This might be cool for the wind section [1] -Ravedave (help name my baby) 02:27, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
This is interesting too: [2] -Ravedave (help name my baby) 02:30, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
Yeah now would be a good time to submit it for WP:GAC. If you nominate it I'll keep an eye on your talk page for any issues and get them resolved. -Ravedave (help name my baby) 03:05, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

Utility

Is there a utility that can spit out all of the words that are wiki linked in an article? Gopher backer 02:12, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

I don't know of one. The closest thing I can think of is WP:AWB which will list words linked more than once. However you need 500+ edits to use it. -Ravedave (help name my baby) 02:23, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

TOC

I am guessing that because the intro on that article is really short someone didn't like the gap and used the non-standard TOC template. You can check out any template's source by going to Template:templatename in this case Template:TOCleft. It looks like there are quite a few TOC templates Category:TOC_templates Help:Section#Table_of_contents_.28TOC.29 has some info about TOCs. Generally I don't change them from the standard. -Ravedave (help name my baby) 23:01, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

Minnesota Project

I noticed you asked Ravedave about ratings. I have rated quite a few using these guidelines Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Assessment. You can do that too, except that one can't grant GA or FA unless it's gone through the process. You may also add pertinent articles to the MN project as you wish. Just add {{WikiProject Minnesota}} on the talk page. Appraiser 05:00, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

I was just checking out 1965 Twin Cities tornado outbreak. Is that survivor story a personal account from User:Dalej? I think it should be cited somehow. Appraiser 00:51, 29 December 2006 (UTC)
What appraiser said (thanks appraiser!). I left a note on Climate of Minnesota, are you ready to nominate it? I would suggest nominating it when you have a week that is fairly open. Usually after a day or two the # of questions really pics up. -Ravedave (Adopt a State) 04:39, 14 January 2007 (UTC)
Oh, I forgot, I had two people with meteorology degrees peek at the page and though neither had time to really go in depth both of them gave it a thumbs up after a precursory read. "Seems like everything is right" -Ravedave (Adopt a State) 04:40, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

Important question

Is it pronounced "SKY-yoo-mah" or "SKEE-yoo-mah"? Wahkeenah 01:37, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

Head's up on the Brewster photo

I also heavily work on USC articles and I know there's a chance that the official portrait photo you uploaded may be deleted since it's theoretically replaceable (I had the same fiasco over Pete Carroll, and I had scanned the B&W image from the media guide). I'm not in favor of this heavy-handed activity (and I'm certainly not going to remove it), but now I'm hoping to capture a free picture of Pete the next time I go to a game (I had a chance at a game but missed it). If you are tapped into the Gopher fans online, maybe you can see if anyone got a personal photo of the Press Conference or something similar (like an alumni event) to license to Wikipedia in some kind of CC or totally free license. --Bobak 23:59, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

Honestly, I would hope and assume so --but sometimes what should work in the real world doesn't work here because Wikipedia likes to stay extra-extra conservative on fair use so as not to provoke what they (somewhat understandably) fear as "the" lawsuit that brings things bad publicity and/or financial ruin. The CD you're talking about is similar digital version of the 2006 USC football media guide I scanned the photo from. I always say keep it up and make them give you a good reason to take it down. You can also do some extra work to make sure the image's page makes very clear why you think the photo is legit. Never hurts. If I can help defend it, let me know. Honestly, I think one of my classmates at the Law School ended up in Maturi's office, I wonder if he could ask them to okay a photo :-) (maybe not...) --Bobak 01:32, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

Fair use and Image:GopherM.png

Greetings! I've retagged Image:GopherM.png as {{univ-logo}}. I did this because this "block M" is trademarked by the University of Minnesota and they retain rights to the graphic representation of it. Please see [3]. I've removed this image from userboxes, including the one on your userpage. I have also tagged the image as orphaned and subject to deletion in seven days since it is not used in any main namespace articles. Our policy is that fair use images must be used in main namespace articles or they are subject to deletion. Further, the use of fair use images on non-main namespace pages is not permitted by Wikipedia:Fair use criteria item #9. Also in line with that policy, I have linkified a number of fair use images that you have uploaded and displayed at User:Gopher backer/Images. Lastly, as a suggestion you might consider using the "gallery" tag instead of a table structure on that page. Makes it easier to add images to the page as you go. For an example use, see User:Durin/Contributions#U.S._Navy_ships_.2842.29. if you have any questions about any of this, I'd be happy to answer. --Durin 16:11, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

The "In popular culture" looks like it's making progress so far. (I forgot about Grumpy Old Men.) I don't have any other major additions or anything else I can think of for that section. The only caution is that anything in there should be cited, although I'm not sure how we do citations for films. Is it original research to come up with a critical viewpoint for a film, like where Fargo paints a bleak picture of Minnesota's climate? I think that's kind of a gray area. I doubt that anyone who's seen the film would come up with a different conclusion, though. --Elkman - (Elkspeak) 16:39, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

Hurricane Iniki the FA for today is non-metric. I would say you would be safe flipping the values. I would leave a note on the talk page stating your reason (official records). -Ravedave 04:01, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

Southern Minnesota Tornado Outbreak of 1967

Hi Gopher backer, I've started a tornado outbreak article, Southern Minnesota tornado outbreak of 1967, which you might have some interest adding information too. Just thought I would pass along a note. RyguyMN 01:41, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

Climate of India

Looks like some people were partially inspired by Climate of Minnesota (see: [Wikipedia:Peer_review/Climate_of_India]) and the article is now up for FA here Wikipedia:Featured_article_candidates#Climate_of_India. I am sure they would appreciate your feedback! -Ravedave 03:31, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

...and it looks like the nominator is good at SVG maps, maybe we can ask him to make alberta clipper/panhandle hook diagrams once he is done with the India article. -Ravedave 03:42, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

Edit summaries

Hi, please use edit summaries. I almost tagged your edit to Air mass [4] as vandalism becuase it looked like a vandal deleting a section. Just a short summary helps alot to show that an edit is well intended. Thanks! Pax:Vobiscum 20:13, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
