Page History Statistics Bug

Hi Soxred. Sorry again for for not using the bug report, but I don't want a google account. I get an "maximum execution time" error, when I set an end date. However, I'e noticed that here (line130) it says "endn" instead of "end". Maybe that already fixes the problem. Thanks for the great tool! --ACNiklas (talk) 16:40, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

The SVN is at an old version, so that is no longer in the code. It is happening for another reason. I'll look into this when I rewrite the tool. (X! · talk)  · @875  ·  20:00, 1 February 2011 (UTC)

The 45,000 edit cutoff

Hi, I asked you about this back in September.
At that time, I observed that:

There is now a restriction on detailed breakdowns for users in excess of 45,000 edits.
This was in order to "conserve resources".
But since no one actually ever uses this feature now (except me), isn't it perfectly safe to rescind that restriction?
Cheers, Varlaam (talk) 17:10, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

You expressed a different point of view:

No one's using it? It's had over a million hits since I implemented it. The hit count has been steady since long before I implemented the counter. Please do not make wild assumptions like that with nothing to back it up with. What more, it is more than just consuming my fair share, it is also to provide a faster response time. Parsing dozens of thousands of edits takes a LONG time in PHP. (X! · talk) · @855 · 19:31, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

I have full and absolute confidence that you know what you're doing, but since September, I have still seen maybe 3 users besides me using the detailed breakdown feature.
Anecdotal evidence, true, but engineers are accustomed to making observations, and reporting same.
I am always surprised when someone has enabled it.
My actual point:
I like your feature. (Obviously.)
For the past few months, I have been doing most of my work in frwiki and svwiki to avoid crossing the dreaded enwiki 45K threshold and shutting down my favourite feature.
So, is the threshold still active?
And if it is, that is simply the way it's gotta be, eh?
Varlaam (talk) 06:25, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

X! - the edit counter page says the cut-off is 75,000. Varlaam: I use this every so often. How do you monitor who is using the "detailed breakdown feature"? --Dweller (talk) 10:26, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

<bump> --Dweller (talk) 09:37, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
Dweller: Do you have a link to where it says that?
Varlaam: Running a SQL query on the database results 2099 users who have opted in on enwiki alone. There's no basis behind your claim that "no one uses this feature". (X! · talk)  · @879  ·  20:05, 1 February 2011 (UTC)

Ah... now I re-read it, what it says at Wikipedia:Editcounter#MediaWiki_features_and_extensions doesn't conflict. Very confusing for simple minds like mine. Where is the documentation on your edit counter? I looked and couldn't find it. --Dweller (talk) 11:06, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

Question for the clerk

Why have several parties at the SAQ ArbCom case been allowed to exceed the 1000 word limit? I worked very hard to live within the rules. Others seem to have been given extra space. And one [1], has posted a link on the evidence page to his "statement" of over 1600 words? Is this fair?

A side question - is this flaunting of the rules taken into consideration by the arbitrators in terms of editorial behavior? Smatprt (talk) 04:22, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

We have already emailed the people who have exceeded the limit, and are giving them a chance to cut them back. (X! · talk)  · @522  ·  11:32, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

Hi, could your bot clean the Wikipedia:Introduction as it does with the sandbox. This preferably has to be left editable so that users can see the edit button, to which the intro refers, but it's still edited quite often despite the editnotice which asks not to. If we use PC on it, we can prevent readers from seeing edits but editors still have to revert all those edits, so it would be great if a bot could 'reset' the intro. Cenarium (talk) 21:18, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

I turned it off because I was told it wasn't meant to be edited anymore. Apparently that's been revertted. (X! · talk)  · @873  ·  19:57, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
I think that before people were told they could edit below the intro, but now it's discouraged. So now it's not supposed to be edited, but semi-protection isn't desirable because users should see the edit button. So pending changes plus a bot to replace the intro should do fine. Could you switch it back on ? And also, is there some page where we can put the text to replace ? Cenarium (talk) 23:35, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

AGK gone for a few days, so..

I left this question for AGK, but since he is gone for a few days, I have been advised by Bishonen to approach Brad and an arbitrator. Brad had recommended that if I had any procedural questions, I ask one of the clerks. Here is the link to my questions for AGK: [2]. Thanks for your time. Bishonen suggested I also email , so I did that as well. Smatprt (talk) 18:07, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

I'm also quite busy for the next few days, so I'll look at this when I get a chance. (X! · talk)  · @241  ·  04:46, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

Hi X! It looks like the tool at http://toolserver.org/~soxred93/rfap is no longer working. Every username I try returns "Invalid user!" 5 albert square RfA

I moved your comment, or copied it, to the RfA discussion page. As you've essentially said nothing, I don't think it belongs in the candidate's RfA. I responded as best as possible, which is not possible, because you've given no clue as to your confusion. While I don't think that the candidate is qualified for adminship based upon her answer to a particular question, she appears to be a solid editor in good standing with the community and does not deserve for her RfA to be sidetracked by off-topic commentaries directed to other editors. Please discuss there if necessary. --Kleopatra (talk) 01:09, 7 February 2011 (UTC)

Hi,

With regard to this revert, the template has been criticized (externally and on the GLAM email list) for using a url that can be shortened. I understand the policy of direct links being preferable on Wikipedia, but in the case of QR codes the recommended design approach is to use as short a url a possible (often generating special short-cut links) so that the 2D image is as simple and readable as possible for printing on a label. I would be happy to add some explanation to the template documentation to this effect. See wm-outreach and WP:GLAM/DER. Thanks (talk) 12:27, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

Until enwp.org becomes aquired by the WMF, I simply feel that it's better to use a longer URL than to have all of the generated QR codes break if the domain goes down. Bitrot happens. (X! · talk)  · @619  ·  13:51, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

Added template for SuggestBot

Hi,

Thanks for being one of SuggestBot's users! I hope you have found the bot's suggestions useful.

We are in the process of switching from our previous list-based signup process to using templates and userboxes, and I have therefore added the appropriate template to your user talk page. You should receive the first set of suggestions within a day, and since we'll be automating SuggestBot you will from then on continue to receive them regularly at the desired frequency.

We now also have a userbox that you can use to let others know you're using SuggestBot, and if you don't want to clutter your user talk page the bot can post to a sub-page in your userspace. More information about the userbox and usage of the template is available on User:SuggestBot/Getting Recommendations Regularly.

If there are any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me on my user talk page. Thanks again, Nettrom (talk) 16:12, 10 February 2011 (UTC)

Your tool "Edit counter" – feature request

Hi! Would it be possible to additionally display in your edit counter tool the number of reverted edits? There is a "revertedEdits" entry in the array that holds the counts all these user-specific numbers ...

Thank you very much for considering - and for your nice tools anyway! Troubled asset (talk) 12:48, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

There is no way to determine the reverted edits at this time. (X! · talk)  · @873  ·  19:57, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
Thank you for your answer and sorry for not getting back to you sooner.
Well, the german wikipedia (my "home" wiki) grants additional user rights (editor and reviewer group memberships) automatically upon fulfillment of certain criterias, one of them is the ratio between the total number of edits and the number of reverted edits. The code checks a variable revertedEdits in the array FRUserCounters in http://svn.wikimedia.org/viewvc/mediawiki/trunk/extensions/FlaggedRevs/FlaggedRevs.hooks.php?revision=81940&view=markup. So there should be such a possibility to check the number of reverted edits ...? Thank you, --Troubled asset (talk) 18:27, 12 February 2011 (UTC)
That's a different functionality entirely and not the "reverted" which you are thinking of. (I presume). Quite simply, there is no easy way to get "reverted" edits from the Toolserver. (X! · talk)  · @847  ·  19:20, 16 February 2011 (UTC)

suppressRedirect during rename feature

During the brief windows of 1.17 being up, I tried to fool around with passing "suppressRedirect=1" to a rename URL and it did not check the box. Is it because of the deployment issues or does it not accept input in that way? Can it? (see User talk:Amalthea#wpReason for a related issue where the problem was fixed in bugzilla:26851) –xenotalk 18:44, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

Amalthea diagnosed the problem, see comment at above-linked thread or bugzilla:23819. –xenotalk 15:31, 9 February 2011 (UTC)
  • Just tested the feature in a live-fire situation and other than the above issue, it works great. If we can solve the above, that would be even better. –xenotalk 13:54, 16 February 2011 (UTC)

Hi. About this - fine tool, thanks. But "View Source" link at the bottom leads to nothing. Could you please upload the source somewhere? I intended to install this counter for Russian Uncyclopedia (Absurdopedia). Thank you. ru.Media (talk) 14:33, 14 February 2011 (UTC)

The code you are trying to run will probably not work without significant modifications, as it runs from a specialized database on the Toolserver. Either way, it is broken right now, so I'll look at this when I get a chance. (X! · talk)  · @850  ·  19:23, 16 February 2011 (UTC)

A month of coding

Always take the maximum length you think you'll take, then double it. If there's any delays, you've budgeted it.

Seriously, tough, want to work together on the code? suspect the basic stuff'll take about a week, but I want to do a lot of optimazation and user friendliness stuff. =) Adam Cuerden (talk) 21:43, 16 February 2011 (UTC)

Sure, that'd be great. (X! · talk)  · @975  ·  22:24, 16 February 2011 (UTC)
My basic plan is to adapt the current featured pictures system, but using a slightly more complicated input. So, "Wikipedia:Today's Featured Whatever/2011-04-10" might look like one of the following:
|type=Sound |number=2 |filename=XXX.ogg |filename2=YYY.ogg |description=The Toccata and Fugue from blah blah...
|type=Sound |number=1 |title=Gershwin's "Blah Blah Blah" |filename=XXX.ogg |description=A single sound file by blah blah...
|type=List |image=XXX.png |imagesize=50px |description='''Featured list''' is a list of blah blah blah.
|type=Picture |filename=XXX.jpg |imagewidth=400px |description=Blaaaaaaaaah
|type=Panoramasuppress

This is a slightly eccentric way of doing it, but with a big advantage: One can use this as input in various templates, to quickly find out any sort of information you need to know. For instance, {{ReturnType|{{Wikipedia:Today's Featured Whatever/2011-04-10}}}} could check which type something is. This can be used to easily make an archive containing just the pictures, by using the code

{{#ifeq:{{ReturnType|{{Wikipedia:Today's Featured Whatever/2011-04-10}}}}|Sound|{{ShowTFW|{{Wikipedia:Today's Featured Whatever/2011-04-10}}}}| }}

OBVIOUSLY, it can be far better optimised than that, but that way's simpler to explain with, if you know #ifeq. =) Adam Cuerden (talk) 07:46, 17 February 2011 (UTC)

Hi X!, my have a source this tools? I need use for my wiki project (AcehPedia), thanks Fadli Idris (talk) 09:01, 17 February 2011 (UTC)

The code you are trying to run will probably not work without significant modifications, as it runs from a specialized database on the Toolserver, and it has multiple dependancies. Thank You!

The Featured Sound Main Page Proposal Voter Barnstar
I was truly humbled by the overwhelming community support for the recent proposal to place featured sounds on the main page. The proposal closed on Tuesday with 57 people in support and only 2 in opposition.

It should take a few weeks for everything to get coded and tested, and once that is done the community will be presented with a mock up to assess on aesthetic appeal.

Finally, I invite all of you to participate in the featured sounds process itself. Whether you're a performer, an uploader, or just come across a sound file you find top quality, and that meets the featured sound criteria, you can nominate it at Wikipedia:Featured sound candidates. Featured sounds is also looking for people to help assess candidates (also at Wikipedia:Featured sound candidates.)

Thanks again for such a strong showing of support, and I hope to see you at featured sounds in the future.

I've mainly just sketched out the interaction of components, and what needs to be done today. Didn't have enough continuous computer time to start assembling the codes, so I'll do it tomorrow. If you want to make a start, the first thing to do is probably to set up a mock mainpage, and duplicate the Today's Featured Picture templates to "Today's Featured Whatever", fixing all the internal links. Adam Cuerden (talk) 00:30, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

I did start the design at User:X!/Main Page FS Mockup a little while ago, so you may want to build off of that. (X! · talk)  · @069  ·  00:39, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

Hi!

Your tool is very useful.

I just wanted to suggest an enhancement to pages like this where it is displayed the text "Revisions that added specified text:". I think it would be good idea to change it to "Revisions that added the text [the specified text goes here]: ", so that it is displayed in the page itself (instead of only in the URL, which is difficult to read because of the encoding).
