Vårdklockans Church

Vårdklockans kyrka and The Iron

Fist "new" church "fixed". Not the very best weather today, but it's not likely to get better anytime soon so I took the pics: File:Vårdklockans kyrka Visby Gotland 1.jpg, File:Vårdklockans kyrka Visby Gotland 2.jpg, File:Vårdklockans kyrka Visby Gotland 3.jpg. The "unknown" church is called Vårdklockans kyrka, previously known as Missionskyrkan. It is in use. Look here and here. It is mentioned in this list sv:Lista över byggnadsminnen i Gotlands län (now there's a list for you^^) as "Metodistkyrkan (Visby Vårdklockan 1)" and it is described here as "Gotland kn, VISBY VÅRDKLOCKAN 1, KV VÅRDKLOCKAN 1 METODISTKYRKAN". There is also another pic of it in the Commons, File:Vårdklockan1 metodistkyrka visby.jpg. I know the name sounds funny, but one should not try to translate it, it is simply a name of that area. I'm sure there is more about it, but this is enough to raise it from 'unknown'.

Stairway to Heaven
  • Fun fact: If you look at the pic here to the right, you see a very narrow street between the church and the little yellow house (by locals called The Iron and is an excellent crêperie). The narrow steet starts some four blocks further up and is much wider there, so every year there are several cars who think that they can make it all the way (despite several warning signs that the street will be too narrow) and they simply get stuck with no way out. :) The crêperie is actually keeping a tally of how many cars get stuck each year. It is sort of an "alley of shame". Imagine breaking all traffic rules and get stuck until someone calls the tow truck! This is how it is usually reported in the local paper. Happy editing, w.carter-Talk 22:14, 14 October 2014 (UTC)
Thanks a lot! I'll make sure to add it, and, when I visit Visby the next time, to pay attention with the car! :) As usual, the pictures are very nice! Yakikaki (talk) 16:55, 15 October 2014 (UTC)

Hi again! We had a bit of luck today, an hour or so with sunshine, so I took the long way to work and managed to bag three churches: Terra Nova, Pingstkyrkan and Tjelvar. They are all in Category:Churches in Visby. But why, oh why, must all churches be aligned in such a way that the sun always is into the camera if one wants to photograph during normal waking hours?? On my way from the car to work I went by the Cathedral and saw that it is being painstakingly renovated. Got some cool pics like the one here, more in the Commons at Category:Visby domkyrka. Thanks for "leading me astray" from my usual path!^^ These pics are the only ones at Commons where the church looks like a project by Christo and Jeanne-Claude. The renovation is mentioned here. Might be fun, and a bit unusual, to include the wrapped up church on its page. What do you think? Always fun to do your pics, w.carter-Talk 21:42, 15 October 2014 (UTC)

Ha, the cathedral really looks like Christo and Jeanne-Claude had been at it! The stairway to heaven idea is not far from the original idea with these soaring towers, I think, but in this version perhaps more "practical" and less poetic?! :D Anyway, thank you so much for all of this! Considering you were having to work against the sun, you managed very well I must say! I will put them on the list! It may take a few days, as work is quite hectic again and I'm in the middle of moving, but I'll get there. Yakikaki (talk) 17:33, 16 October 2014 (UTC)
Moving? Poor thing! :( One of the things I really hate to do, but might be forced to quite soon. That is why I try to do as many photos as I can right now. Best, w.carter-Talk 17:48, 16 October 2014 (UTC)

Ahem

That was not quite what I meant by alt, Yakikaki. What I just meant that everything should be untouched except to the right, where the car should disappear, cropping exactly on a vertical line, just exactly some pix to the left, cropping out thre car, nothing else. ... Wish I could show with a line. Hafspajen (talk) 18:16, 16 October 2014 (UTC)

Hello Hafspajen! Sorry for the late answer. Yes, I understand your idea, and I tried it, but the result was even worse than the crop I did, in my own opinion. This was because the car actually is quite close to the house; removing it created a very unsymmetrical image. Unfortunately, I think we will have to live with the car. -Yakikaki (talk) 18:46, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

Oh, well- cars are nice too. Hafspajen (talk) 18:47, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

Gnisvärd and Kovik

Cow parking at Kovik

Sorry for littering your page again... Morning off, so down to Gnisvärd and Kovik. Unfortunately the rain caught up with me there, but I took the pics anyway, don't know when I'll be in their neighborhood again soon. Gnisvärd is a very nice place, I go there often for walks in the summer. Now totally desterted. Kovik is a really bleak and depressing place, just like out of an Ingmar Bergman film. Yikes. The only "excitement" were the cows in the parking lot. I don't like cows, they're tasty enough, but up close by my car they are big, drooly, stubborn and unpredictable, although not as sneaky as the sheep. Pics are at Category:Kovik fishing village (Gotland) and Category:Gnisvärd fishing village (Gotland). Good luck with the moving! :) w.carter-Talk 20:50, 16 October 2014 (UTC)

Oh, what beautiful places! They do seem very quiet and tranquil, though, and with the grey sea so nearby. Thank you very much! I would have liked to go down there, myself, to park among the cows and take a walk by the sea. Who knows, maybe I would find a chess companion there..? As always, I'm very grateful. :) -Yakikaki (talk) 18:49, 20 October 2014 (UTC)
Glad you like them. The sea is the best thing with this place. :) And there is a sort of zen-like quality to the deserted places this time of year. On another note: Not sure how much "cheating" is allowed in Featured pictures, but I just could not resist. If you want it, it's yours: File:Mõdriku mõisa peahoone-b.jpg Best, w.carter-Talk 19:35, 20 October 2014 (UTC)
You are a wonder, you are, and with such interesting skills! I appreciate it very much, but somehow by now I've grown a bit fond of that car. It's quite discreet and at the same time adds scale to the picture, which is needed - the house isn't as big as one would think from all those columns and pomp. But thank you for the offer, I'm very impressed by this vanishing act! :) Yakikaki (talk) 16:38, 21 October 2014 (UTC)
Ta dah! :) If you have some pic that needs fixing just ping me, I've helped others. I made a page about it. And for my next disappearing act, I will disappear to my sandbox to work on expanding an article. See ya'! w.carter-Talk 18:31, 21 October 2014 (UTC)

Cake!

Hello Yakikaki, I'm here to ask you if you can identify for me a cake that I had while I was in Tallinn. Here is a photo I took of it: [1]. I do not know if it was "just" a layered cake of sponge and caramel, or if it is a regional dessert that goes by a specific name in Estonia. Any ideas? Thank you! Julia\talk 01:29, 23 October 2014 (UTC)

Hello Julia! Mmm, that looks like a really nice and quite fancy version of a napoleoni kook, or Napoleon cake. They have something similar that goes under the same name also in Sweden, but not as nice as the Estonian one. Where did you get it? I think I know most of the cafés in Tallinn ;) Ciao (or tšau as the Estonians say), Yakikaki (talk) 19:34, 23 October 2014 (UTC)
Oh yes, that's it! Napoleon Cake! Only for some reason this was with layers of sponge instead of puff pastry. It was still delicious though!
You'll think I'm common, but the cake is from a supermarket, :( My boyfriend and I were on a budget and so after we had dinners out, we would pick a dessert from the Stockmann that was very near our hotel and then share it in our room. Cheaper than eating dessert in a restaurant and just as much fun! Julia\talk 03:27, 24 October 2014 (UTC)
Haha, no I wouldn't think you're being common if you buy your groceries at Stockmann's - if you would have used Rimi, maybe ;) I just thought it looked so professional, I thought it must be a café. And I agree, it's always nicer to be able to have your own place and make your own food, when abroad. I hope you had a nice time and will return! :) Ciao, Yakikaki (talk) 14:02, 24 October 2014 (UTC)
We had a fabulous time. We loved Tallinn. We are thinking of ways we can move there! Maybe I will get a postdoc there someday and my partner can do software engineering remotely, perhaps? We can dream! ;) Julia\talk 18:44, 24 October 2014 (UTC)

All present and accounted for, Sir!

Finally! All the pics are uploaded. So if you want to change, replace, add anything it is all in the Category:Visby stadsmur (Yes! The category is actually in the name you added to the box. :) ) When uploading the last ones I noticed for the first time that I had accidentally photographed the old well in the Östergravar outside the Well Gate: The well. I've never noticed it before. I always learn something new when working with you! :) Thanks! w.carter-Talk 19:49, 2 November 2014 (UTC)

Oh, nice! :) I will go through them with care and change in the list as you suggest. And I agree, I always learn a lot when working with you – through translating the descriptions of the various towers and gates, I'm slowly starting to develop an understanding of medieval warfare, for example. I would never have guessed I would end up learning stuff like this. :) Yakikaki (talk) 20:04, 2 November 2014 (UTC)
Hi, I made some tweaks after getting an answer at User talk:Philg88#Problem with a word. The word utrusta is apparently a bit tricky to translate and get right in certain contexts, so some of the sentences had to be re-written. w.carter-Talk 10:18, 3 November 2014 (UTC)
Great, it's coming along very nicely now, I think! :) Yakikaki (talk) 17:57, 3 November 2014 (UTC)
Nah... I just put the map "somewhere" to get it in the article. ;) It is really hard to place it, we need it, but it's in the way wherever one puts it. Maybe once all the text is there, we can find a suitable place for it. Perhaps on top of or after the list, I honestly don't know... Have a nice evening, I'm going to potter about with this and that. w.carter-Talk 19:08, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
Yes, you're right – with time, we'll find a solution. Have a nice evening, Yakikaki (talk) 19:09, 4 November 2014 (UTC)

I got an idea and executed "it" instead of doing ce on the text. Let's see if your job-screen can accept it now. It works on my big screen here at home. Otherwise, we'll just move it again! :) And... how could you ever think your thoughtful balloons were inappropriate after all crazy things I've put on you page. :) Looks like you will get your FA, wonderful, I'm so happy for you! w.carter-Talk 22:30, 4 November 2014 (UTC)

I like the solution! Very good indeed. I'll start adding some notes tonight for the towers and stuff that we don't have any text for, but that I have something about in my books. I'll see what I can come up with! And then there's the Tjelvar site, of course. Best, Yakikaki (talk) 20:02, 5 November 2014 (UTC)
I started with some ce, but I'll leave it alone for now so there will be no edit conflicts. I have other things to mess with in the meantime. :) There is also the Guteinfo and loads of other sites and books where you or I can find material for those. No problem! :) Happy editing! w.carter-Talk 20:16, 5 November 2014 (UTC)

A glass of Dricku for you!

A stout glass of Gotlandsdricka for you!
Congratulations on List of church ruins on Gotland being promoted to Featured List! w.carter-Talk 11:12, 6 November 2014 (UTC)

About Dricku

Dricku is the national beverage of Gotland. The rest of the world is (thankfully) spared. It symbolizes and embodies the rebellious nature of Gotlanders and the harsh island. The un-official and very secret recipe for dricku is this: Take one (1) fairly large juniper. Hack it into moderately large pieces and place in a jerrycan. Do not remove anything! Dirt cleanses your system and spiders and bugs add flavor and protein. Add water and whatever is left in your pantry. Ferment until strong. The alcohol content is always a mystery, do not measure it. Dricku is the only beverage which can be consumed by people who never drink alcohol (see aforementioned mystery). It is also exempt from all laws and regulations about the selling, drinking and handling beverages. Note: All of the above is only valid on Gotland. An annual Dricku-making World Championship is held on Gotland at some illustrious location with a population larger that 14, Ref [1], Ref [2]. - w.carter-Talk 11:57, 6 November 2014 (UTC)

Hahaha, this is the BEST appreciation "thing" I've received so far! I cannot even begin to imagine what this beverage tastes like. I will enjoy this stout class together with my sheep that I got earlier :) Yakikaki (talk) 16:39, 6 November 2014 (UTC)
It is simply V-I-L-E-! ...but it's traditional. ;) w.carter-Talk 16:42, 6 November 2014 (UTC)

Wow!

I see that you have done some splendid things with the Cathedral while I was out! :) Really nice work!! I'm sort of back now. Still a bit groggy, but the sailors cheered me up a lot. Thanks! Cheers, w.carter-Talk 21:52, 11 November 2014 (UTC)

I must also add a comment that I myself was given while I worked on John Bauer: Your language is so much better when you write with your own words than when you just translate someone else's text. When one translates, one tends to be bogged down by the original text, and Swedish texts are so full of useless, extra words and silly expressions. Ever since I got that advise, I always try to read the sentence I'm supposed to translate and them "tell it" in my own words. It sounds much better that way, but it took me a while to realize that. Best, w.carter-Talk 22:02, 11 November 2014 (UTC)

Thank you Captain! :) It was something I had wanted to do for a long time, but never got to doing until now, so it feels nice. And I completely agree, I feel much more comfortable writing in my own English words, too. One problem is that since Swedish Wikipedia basically lacks sources, I don't want to deviate too much from the original text, as I don't know if I'd be straying from the truth (and frankly, sometimes I wonder if Swedish Wikipedia is telling the whole truth). And while on the topic, I might as well add that in general, I think the lack of reliable sources are a bit of a problem on Wikipedia in general. But anyway, thanks a lot and I'm, happy you're feeling better! :) Yakikaki (talk) 16:46, 12 November 2014 (UTC)
PS. The wall is coming along really nicely! :) Yakikaki (talk) 17:18, 12 November 2014 (UTC)
Frankly, I think that the Swedish Wikipedia is a horror and should not be trusted at all!! I only use it as a guideline, but I always get my own books to find the facts. Thankfully the article about the wall seems to follow the books quite nicely. >Phew!< I made a trip to the library today and got hold of some of the books on the wall. Thought I could help a bit with the referencing. :) I like to use the Harv ref system when I have to quote a book many times since it's so easy to work with. Hope you don't mind. I'm just going to add some more refs and after that I'll move on to something else, like dinner. Cheers! w.carter-Talk 17:34, 12 November 2014 (UTC)
Hehe, yes. The Swedish Wikipedia still has a bit to go. Nice edits on the wall by the way! I actually prefer the Harvard reference system, but never quite got the hang of it, but the other day I spent some time sneak-peaking a guide at work, so I think I'll start using it, too. It looks better (and is a requirement for GA, no?). Catch you later, Yakikaki (talk) 18:12, 13 November 2014 (UTC)
No, it is not required for a GA or even a FA, but it is a very convenient way of doing refs. Just put the |ref=harv last in the cite book and then use the curly brackets to give author, year and pages. That's all. You can see how I have done it in the wall-article. When you have installed the new script I will post two other codes for scripts here. Small scripts, but useful, one of them alerts you if you you have made any mistakes in the Harv ref. See ya' - w.carter-Talk 18:30, 13 November 2014 (UTC)

I just remembered that some time ago I promised you some more scripts. This time it is that very effective one that help you correct all the small things to Wiki- standard. As you recall it should be handled with care, since it may (as you have seen) also correct things like links that should not be corrected. Like I did in this diff and the next. You can read more about the script here. If you copy the code below to your /commons.js page below the previous lines you will get a new small "brush" or "mop" up in the left corner of the toolbar in the editing area. I can see mine right between the B I and the small pencil and the link-icon. If you open a section, or an article in the editing area and click on the brush the script will instantly make the correction on all of the text open in the area. It happens faster than a blink! I usually scroll so that I have some section of the text that I know is formatted "wrong" like ==Heading== and use that as an indicator that it has worked by turning to == Heading ==. And after that I of course check all the links. That is usually easier after a save so that you get all the corrections in a "diff". All of this sounds much more complicated than it is. It took me just two tries to get it right and understand it the first time I used it. The best way is to install the script and then try it in the sandbox or at some small article you have created yourself and know how to fix if anything should happen.

Code:
mw.loader.load( '//de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Benutzer:TMg/autoFormatter.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript' );
  • ——This message will self-destruct in ten seconds. Good luck, Yaki!——————————————————— - w.carter-Talk 23:15, 12 November 2014 (UTC)
  • Hello Carter! Haha, thank you very much! :D I have been thinking of asking for this for a while, so thanks a lot! It seem really useful, I think. All those minor annoying things are really, well, annoying. So this tool seem awfully useful! Ciao, Yakikaki (talk) 18:09, 13 November 2014 (UTC)

Two more

You seem to handle the new script quite brilliantly. Not so dangerous as you thought? :) Here are two more. The first one makes red comments and markings if there are any mistakes made in the Harv refs on a page. When you have installed it, you can look at these pages to see what it looks like: East India Company & Ice hockey. Look at the Reference and Bibliography sections. You will soon find many other articles with these problems... :-/ Code:

importScript('User:Ucucha/HarvErrors.js');

The next script has nothing to do with editing, it has more to do with seeing who is who. It simply creates a little blue or cerise "aura" (depending on your browser) around the signatures of all users who are admins. It is quite useful since you instantly know who to look for if you need help or simply want to know who someone is. A harmless but sometimes useful toy. :) Code:

importScript('User:Amalthea/userhighlighter.js');

I'll be back! - w.carter-Talk 23:13, 13 November 2014 (UTC)

Thanks a lot! I'll try these, too! :) Yakikaki (talk) 20:18, 15 November 2014 (UTC)

The last ones

Into the Heart of Darkness...

Here's a little something for you when you get back. Sometimes working with your articles is an adventure. This last trip really was a journey up the river!! I have been to places where no-one in their right mind would go. There is a reason that some of the Gotland churches have not been photographed before. ;) I have been waiting for such a long time to be able to bag the last pics now that the pesky leaves have fallen, but... Weeks of rain and no sunshine. And very soon the days will be too short to go and photograph the last six since they are far from where I live, and far between, making time a factor. So despite rain and bad light I made the trip today. I have to apologize for the bleak quality of the pics, but at least they are better than nothing. There are not many versions to choose from (I will upload some later), I was lucky to get one acceptable at each location due to the rain, cold and lack of light. (whine, whine, whine) I have taken the liberty of uploading those at the Churches on Gotland. See ya' later, w.carter-Talk 20:36, 20 November 2014 (UTC)

Hi Cartie! I've finally got my computer going again, after some struggle. Things are getting along nicely in the new flat :) Thanks for the Gotland churches photos, you really are a marvellous person! What a very nice surprise! :) And yes, the countryside in Sweden may seem quite abandoned and "noir" at times, but in this case, Sweden for once surely isn't number one. Just take a short trip across the Baltic Sea and I'll show you some cozy nice abandoned kolkhozes on Saaremaa... You should be lucky you have what you have, in this case. Communist heritage really gives everything a different... edge. Anyways cartie, here's a Christmas flower for you for being so patient and kind! I have some more boxes to unpack, but I hope to be able to get back to writing some nice articles for the churches you've supplied me with! All the best, Yakikaki (talk) 22:31, 28 November 2014 (UTC)
Hello, and welcome back! :) How nice to hear that things have gone well and that you are happy about your new flat. You are of course quite right. I have seen quite a bit of the rest of the world and I really do know just how privileged we are here in Sweden. It just does not feel that way when you are knee-deep in cold mud, but I know. Believe me. I think it's mostly the season that makes me a bit glum. I can never understand the hysteria for more "things" that descend upon people as Christmas approaches, I never celebrate it that way. I find it disgusting. Thank You for the lovely flower, so sweet! :) Btw, I like my new name. :) Best, Cartie-Talk 22:57, 28 November 2014 (UTC)

Update

Hello Yaki, it's been a while. Just wanted you to know that I haven't forgotten the Ryska kyrkan, it's just that my life outside the WP has/is a bit of a busy mess right now, the only free time I have is at nights. I will get the pictures as soon as the dust settles. Nice work on the Scania articles! :) Can't help you there though, me and Scania have never seen eye to eye for a number of reasons. And congrats on your pics barnstar, you so deserve it! Best, w.carter-Talk 12:27, 31 January 2015 (UTC)

Yeah, where did you two dissapear, you and W.carter ? Hafspajen (talk) 21:46, 2 February 2015 (UTC)
@Hafspajen: Well, I'm still here, but back on my old projects. Me and Yaki cooperated on articles about Gotland where our interests coincided. We were very efficient and once those projects were done we went on to other projects, like many editors do. It is quite possible that we will work together again, like many Wikisloths none of us have a "fixed" area of the WP, but move around as we please. I also know that Yaki is very busy in their life outside the WP and may be absent from time to time. w.carter-Talk 21:58, 2 February 2015 (UTC)

Hello you two! Sorry, I'm just very busy these days! It warms my heart that you sent me a thought :) I hope to be back in earnest as soon as possible. Carter, I haven't forgotten my part of the bargain either! I still have a few Gotland churches to do, and I will do them - perhaps I will even have time this weekend for one or two. The book is on the desk, opened at Silte Church, in any case. :) PS. The Swedish part of my family all come from Scania! :D They may seem a bit rough around the edges, but I hope you will one day meet a pleasant Scanian to give you a new perspective :) Ciao for now, friends! A thought

Hi Yaki! Since I have dabbled in a few GAs since last, I was thinking about maybe nominate the Visby city wall for it. I think it has a shot since it is one of the most complete descriptions of the wall that I've seen. What do you think? On another note, I was reminded of you when I was in the Gotlandic section of the library the other day. I found an entire bookcase with books on Gotland churches! Each church had it's own thick book. Whish I could have sent you all of them. :) Best w.carter-Talk 16:59, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi Carter! That's a great idea, I think you should do it - though as you probably understand I can't be of much help, as I can't find the time for Wikipedia any more at the time (but who knows what the future will bring). But go ahead and do it, I think it deserves it after all our work - especially yours, what with all the photographing and all! Stay well, Yakikaki (talk) 16:21, 27 February 2015 (UTC)
Ok. Stay well!! And give us a 'ping' when you do come back. :) All the best, w.carter-Talk 16:33, 27 February 2015 (UTC)
Will do! :) Yakikaki (talk) 19:08, 27 February 2015 (UTC)
