Catholic captain[edit]

Hi, and thanks for the quick fix to the Johnston article. The Lindsay Hassett one may need looking at as well. I would have changed then myself but I am loathe to remove cited information without discussion first.

While Armstrong was Catholic and a church goer and his mother and unmarried sisters were ultra-Catholic, he himself was not seen as a Catholic per se. Why this is, no one is quite sure as Melbourne in his time was quite sectarian with the Conscription referendum and Daniel Mannix etc.

It seems that as he attended a Protestant school and was a member of the establishment Melbourne Cricket Club, combined with not being seen as a "political" Catholic, that his Catholicism was overlooked. Of course, when he was appointed captain of Australia, the Board of Control did not have a lot of options. -- Mattinbgn\talk 00:03, 19 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A little more. Similar to the split in Bradman's day, but reversed, Armstrong was quite contemptous of the "lemonade drinkers" in his team when he was captain. The "Lemonade drinkers" tended to be the Methodists etc. -- Mattinbgn\talk 00:05, 19 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
YEah, this is all interesting stuff. Unfortunately my knowledge of AUstralian history isn't so good but the sectarian splits was not really something I was conscious of before I headr Tony Abbott taling about the old days when Catholics were never in the Liberal Party. Oh well. and when I read up about Bradman and Fingleton and O'Reilly I was surprised that Catholics were supposed to be happy-go-lcuker drinkers and Protestants were teetotallers. With the way celibacy is I would have thought that it would have been the other way around if there was any difference. Oh well, something interesting to learn about some day, Blnguyen (bananabucket) 08:25, 24 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Indo-Greeks (sources)[edit]

What was wrong with the Indo-Greeks (sources) article that you had to remove it from the DYK section? Gatoclass (talk) 06:35, 21 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A large part of it was a fork of Indo-Greek kingdom - if you look at the top half of the new article, it is a rearrangement of parts of the parent article (Use Ctrl-F), so in effect only 50% of the article is new, which corresponds to a 2X expansion in new content. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 06:37, 21 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'll take you word for it, but I think it was a bit excessive to remove it from the list just on that account. I spent considerable time arranging those entries so they would fit the front page perfectly, and it does bug me a bit that my efforts have gone to waste.
Even if it was part lifted from another article, it was a good article and no-one reading it would ever have known. I think a better course of action would have been to simply leave it there and just not award the editor in question with a DYK entry instead. Gatoclass (talk) 06:43, 21 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(Also posted on that page)

B. L. Nguyen: Didn't see this or the latter part of your previous post. You say, "As for India ..." in your first post. Where did I say anything about "India" in my original post that required you to respond with "As for India?" Also, where did you see me claiming on my userpage that I wrote anything in the India article other than the lead, the geography section, and the flora and fauna? Next, where did you see me claiming any credit for the Pakistan or Bangladesh articles? To my knowledge, I have never made any edits in either article. Lastly, since you brought it up, what is POV about the India article? Please be specific if you are making that claim. Best regards, Fowler&fowler«Talk» 22:12, 22 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I didn't say you did edit the Pakistan/Bangladesh articles at all, and I didn't say that you said anything about India in your original post either. I was just commenting on Pakistan and Bangladesh as well because I felt all the subcontinent country articles were a bit glossy. As far as India specifically, I thought it was unusual that there wasn't anything about caste/regional/religious tensions or separatist movements. Then again, perhaps its best to not bring anything up about that article.... Anyway, take it easy and enjoy your break, I'm not trying to get into your head. Re: Congratulations[edit]

Thanks for your support and your advice about formatting and transcluding the nomination. I am a little paranoid about hitting the wrong button at the moment until I understand the procedures etc. I see Keith Miller is the next Invincible collaboration. Plenty of sources there so there should be no issues with getting something up to speed quickly. I don't think the Armstrong article is far away from a GA nom either; it needs the lead rewritten, perhaps a graph similar to Image:Keith Miller graph.png (where can I get one by the way?) and a spell check and reference tidy. Hopefully it will be nominated by around Sunday. Thanks again, Mattinbgn\talk 12:31, 19 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I have incorporated most of the bulleted list as per your suggestion. It does make for a better read; especially in the Hardy-Weinberg Section. Generally to find "unusual topics", it's best to look for more historical things. Some things that are not so common in the modern era will naturally likely to grab a readers interest a lot more. Have a look at User:Blnguyen/DYK. Most of the unusual stuff was about olden day people I guess. There isn't really any secret actually. Check User Request - AL2TB / ARTISOL2345[edit]

Recommend that you re-examine this request, for the following reasons:
1 - AL2TB has caused disruption to the on-going Wikipedia:Suspected sock puppets/Artisol2345 case, by attempting to circumvent policy by replacing the PROD tag at the User:Artisol2345 page, thereby eliminating evidentiary content. This is a blatant disruption and violation of policy.
2 - Outside IP address tracing has resulted in the following findings:

IP Addresses attributable to AL2TB: 68.4.104.141 = [ ip68-4-104-141.oc.oc.cox.net ] Broadband-type cable
IP Addresses attributable to Artisol2345: 68.5.47.155 = [ ip68-5-47-155.oc.oc.cox.net ] Broadband-type cable
NOTE - This IP address range covers 68.4.0.0 - 68.5.255.255, and is assigned by the above provider.

Also, Wikipedia policy on the use of sockpuppets states that; "A time overlap is only one way to determine whether two accounts are alternate accounts. Consensus may determine that two accounts are alternate accounts even though they do not overlap in time and that only one account is active. For example, there may be a use connection between the two or more accounts that shows them in a constant state of succession as a line of alternative accounts. It is the actions of the editor, not the name of the account, that makes two or more accounts alternate accounts. (Sockpuppetry:What constitutes an alternate account) Edit Centric (talk) 07:07, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Quick CU request[edit]

Could you quickly run a CU on UnclePaco (talk · contribs) and 68.199.204.86 (talk · contribs)? UnclePaco was engaging in edit warring on Dominican Day Parade, and 68.199.204.86 came out of nowhere and made a revert. If UnclePaco made this revert, I may re-block the user for edit warring. Thanks, Nishkid64 (talk) 06:36, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A checkuser was already performed by admin B here [1]. I abide by the rules especially on controversial articles, http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Dominican_Day_Parade&action=history despite some of the personal attacks that I received as noted here [2]. My statement doesn't preclude you from doing another one. UnclePaco (talk) 06:46, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, it caught two other fellows who have sporadically teamed up with UnclePaco - Armyguy11 (talk · contribs) and YoSoyGuapo (talk · contribs). Direct hit. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 06:48, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. All accounts indefblocked. Nishkid64 (talk) 06:59, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Wait ... who is who in this? Alison said at Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Case/UnclePaco that the Hicksville IP range is not UnclePaco. Are you saying Armyguy11=YouSoyGuapo=UnclePaco or are you saying Armyguy11=YouSoyGuapo=68.x/67.x? A cursory glance at the talk edits of Armyguy11 and YoSoyGuapo reveals that they don't talk anything remotely like UnclePaco. The IP edits sound close at times, but there isn't enough to go on. (By the way, can we maybe move this to the RFCU page or the talk page and keep it in one place?) --B (talk) 07:00, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm? UP is not the IP that was originally nominated.... UP=AG=YSG /= 68.xx or 67.xx. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 07:04, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Feel free to make your own copy, but I prefer to keep a copy here as well. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 07:04, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
What's even stranger is that 64.131.205.111, UnclePaco's primary IP, was used by Mykungfu (talk · contribs). The IP identified itself as Mykungfu on April 11. Four days later, he reverted an edit here. UP=MKF=AG=YSG? I'll look into this matter. Nishkid64 (talk) 07:15, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok ... let me ask a couple of silly questions - (1) how certain is this? UnclePaco speaks in broken English and makes frequent typos. The others don't. I guess the broken English is just an act? (2) At User talk:YoSoyGuapo/WhenVandalFightingGotPersonal, it's pretty clear that YoSoyGuapo has a history of sockpuppetry. Why didn't Alison make this connection in my request? (Is it simply that I didn't ask?) --B (talk) 07:19, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's dead certain. UP has been stuck on the same IP for a long time, making 90+% of his edits from this IP, which is static and does not change. The only other accounts of this IP (all 12 digits) were YSG and AG, so it's not like it was a widely-shared static IP at all. It's a direct hit. Alison might have just gotten UP's stats and saw that they did not match your nominated stats, without then going on to check his computer, which would have revealed the co-habiting accounts. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 07:24, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have tagged more sockpuppets used by UnclePaco, as determined by previous CU requests (YoSoyGuapo and Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Case/64.131.205.111). They can be found here. Nishkid64 (talk) 07:35, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Marsh and skippers[edit]

I will have a look at Marsh now. I don't anticipate any problems. With the skippers, I am working on Collins at the moment and my mental worklist after him is Hill, Noble, Darling and Trumble. Bradman, Hassett and Johnson should all come up as part of the Invincibles project and the latter ones should draw interest from others. What a monumental featured topic that would be! -- Mattinbgn\talk 05:03, 28 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have just promoted Marsh - Well done again. I see an advertisement for an Australian captains featured topic. It is a huge job and may take a while, but sources will not be a problem. Cheers, Mattinbgn\talk 05:43, 28 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've done my reading for Noble and will be getting up to that over the weekend, so you probably needn't double up on Noble there. After that I will be mostly away in January, could you keep an eye on the three remaining GACs if someone asks for fixes. I don't want to withdraw and then have to queue up again when I come back again. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 06:47, 28 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Not a problem. Looking at the articles I don't anticipate any great difficulties. Off to the big smoke this evening, hopefully scan some photos and perhaps see if I can get a photo of Armstrong's shirt. -- Mattinbgn\talk 07:16, 28 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent. I have a passage on Noble from On top down under that I thought was interesting; "As a writer on the 1926 tour he saw Britain in the throes of a general strike and poverty resulting from unemployment. Hotel maids were working for ten shillings a week. Noble always ordered a full breakfast and told the maids to have it. On the way to the ground he had coffee at a snack-bar." All the best for the New Year. Cheers, Mattinbgn\talk 10:06, 31 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
