Categories...

Could you please not put song articles into Category;Songs from musicals if they have a category for the musical for which they were written. It helps declutter the category, and makes songs easier to find. Gareth E Kegg 15:05, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

Yes, that's all right. The reason why I added the articles on show tunes to this category was in case they didn't have any category of songs from their shows. But I will bear that in mind in the future.

Song lyrics

Dear Yip, I think that the lyrics that you are removing from songs may be displayed under the "fair use" doctrine. They are not sold separately as poetry, and showing them here will not deprive the copyright holders of any income. Please let me know if you have any information to the contrary, but I think it is permissible and beneficial for Wikipedia to display them. I'm having difficulty with the above since apparently Yip isn't using edit summaries and Ssilvers hasn't provided any diffs or even links to articles. Please Yip, use edit summaries, always. Some Enchanted Evening

Hi Yip. In 2007, you added this info to the article: "According to the running commentary on the DVD release of South Pacific, this song provides an example of Hammerstein's use of verbs in a song. The DVD commentary mentions that Lehman Engel remembered how Oscar Hammerstein II wanted to write a song that used verbs, but waited ten years to do so before he wrote this song." Since there have been about half a dozen DVDs of South Pacific that contain audio commentaries, could you please let us know which DVD this refers to, and who on the commentary made the statement? (On the DVD listings on AllRovi, Lehman Engel is not listed as doing any commentary on any of the DVDs listed.) Thanks very much. Softlavender (talk) 04:02, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

I'm referring to the 2006 Fox DVD release of the 1958 film version of South Pacific with Gaynor and Brazzi. This is part of the running commentary of the film on the first disc by Ted Chapin and Gerard Alessondrini. Gerard Alessondrini mentions that Hammerstein told Lehman Engel that he wanted to write a "verb" lyric ten years before he wrote South Pacific. This is part of the 2006 Fox DVD release and also part of the recent 2008 Blu-Ray version of the film. Do feel free to update my comments. Yip1982 (talk) 07:12, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

Alessondrini: "Lehman Engel, the great conductor and teacher of musical theatre, used to tell his class that - you can confirm this or deny it - that Hammerstein had told him that for about ten years prior to writing the song, he was searching for a song that he wanted to write - a lyric that was a "verb" lyric that was all about seeing, hearing, doing, feeling - taking action, and then he finally found it with this character. And indeed if you listen to the lyric "...you may see a stranger...", "...you may hear her laughing..." and then take action and do it. And then Rodgers just scored it with the emphasis on the verbs. After reading your comments on the List of Christmas carols talk page ("Carols and Christmas songs" and "Multiple tunes for the same carol text"), I agree somewhat with your arguments. Perhaps you might create a "List Christmas novelty Songs" wiki article to help demarcate the difference between Christmas Carol and a Christmas Song and/or "List of Christmas Winter Carols" wiki article. Please don't be afraid to make constructive changes to the List of Christmas carols, User:Walter Görlitz is currently serving out a block due to his persistent edit warring with other editors on another article.
