SPARS[edit]

While reviewing some of your edits of the article SPARS, I ran across the sentence "This newly developed and top-secret radio navigation system allowed stations in the continental U.S. to monitor ships at sea and calculate the positions of long-range aircraft." in the Assignments section of the article. This is not what LORAN does. What LORAN does is enable the vessel or aircraft that has the equipment to receive the signal from a pair of LORAN stations to locate the vessel's or aircraft's position for navigation purposes. The LORAN station does not monitor vessels or aircraft positions; they merely send out signals. The Wikipedia article LORAN does not help much with a simple explanation of what LORAN does and doesn't do. I will attempt to find a reference that includes an explanation and change the wording to the sentence and add a citation. I hope this won't interfere with your editing project. If it does, just let me know and I will hold off until you are finished. I realize that this is unrelated to what the main thrust of the article is, but it bothers me to see something in a article that is inaccurate. Cuprum17 (talk) 17:30, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Cuprum17 Great! Sounds good. Later (tomorrow?) I will look back at the old diffs (before I started) to also see what article previously said. I know I tried to consolidate a VERY long sentence (or two?) into one, since the article wasn't so much about LORAN, as about working at the station that used the tech. But your explanation makes sense: "LORAN stations send signals that assist ships and aircraft in navigation." Yes?
You are a GREAT help. I only sent the other talk message after I noticed I was prompted to an edit to an old page, as our double-/triple-checking crossed wires. (And I think I lost an edit? Who knows.) No big deal. I hope to finish up in the next day? two days? based on real life, and I'll let you (and all, via talk page) know when I'm done. (I'm nearly there!!) But thanks for checking.
Really, thanks. I can see you (and a group) have put a lot of time into this page, and others. Kudos. Just trying to do my bit. Hope you have time to look for my little errors when I'm done. Be well. —Yogabear2020 (N.B. NoviceEditor; Talk) 18:57, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Cuprum17 So perhaps (after "LORAN"): "This newly developed and top-secret radio navigation system allowed stations in the continental U.S. to assist in position location, and navigation, for ships at sea and long-range aircraft." Thoughts? —Yogabear2020 (N.B. NoviceEditor; Talk) 20:02, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I would go with something a little simpler: "This newly developed and top-secret radio navigation system allowed LORAN stations to assist ships and aircraft in finding their navigation location." Cuprum17 (talk) 11:36, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, good. I might add (for redundant clarity): "This ... radio navigation system allowed on-shore LORAN stations to assist ships and aircraft...." Perhaps? —Yogabear2020 (N.B. NoviceEditor; Talk) 12:15, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Works for me! Do it! Thanks...Cuprum17 (talk) 14:15, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Good enough. Will do. I'm also finishing up the rest, and should be posting as "DONE" by tonight (or tomorrow). Over-and-out. —Yogabear2020 (N.B. NoviceEditor; Talk) 14:22, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you![edit]

The Copyeditor's Barnstar
In more than a year here on Wikipedia, this is actually my first time to do a "WikiLove" (weird name). Because for me personally, this adds nothing, so that's why I did not share this with my wikifriends, but since you're a bit new and the effort you've put into the article is amazing (Besides copyediting, you've expanded the prose), So, you're an exception to that lol. Once again, thank you. Greenish Pickle! (🔔) 02:02, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
