Non notable autobiography[edit]

Unfortunately all this needs proving by meeting our requirements at WP:NOTABILITY, WP:BLP, WP:BIO, and WP:ACADEMIC - all supported by WP:RS:

Phyllis Zagano is Senior Research Associate-in-Residence at Hofstra UNiversity, Hempstead, NY, and author or editor of over 15 books in Catholic Studies. An expert on women and Catholicism, and in spirituality, she has lectured throughout the United States, Canada, and in Europe, epsecially on the growing debate about and interest in the ordination of women as deacons in the Roman Catholic Church. She is a former Fulbright Fellw (University of Limerick, Ireland) and has taught at Fordham, Boston, and Yale Universities. <ref> url=http://people.hofstra.edu/Phyllis_Zagano/</ref>

Please do not write an article about yourself, as you did at Phyllis Zagano. Creating an autobiography is strongly discouraged - see our guideline Writing autobiographies. If you create such an article, it may be deleted. If what you have done in life is genuinely notable and can be verified according to our policy for articles about living people, someone else will probably create an article about you sooner or later. (See Wikipedians with articles.) Please understand that this is an encyclopedia and not a personal web space or social networking site. If your article has already been deleted, please see Why was my page deleted?, and if you feel the deletion was an error, please discuss it with the deleting administrator. Thank you. Advice[edit]

As I often do, I feel like apologising because Wikipedia is so keen to encourage everyone to come and edit that we do not make it clear enough in advance what Wikipedia is not about, in particular that it is not a site like Myspace or LinkedIn for people to list themselves. In fact, writing about oneself or one's own concerns is strongly discouraged, for reasons explained at Wikipedia:Autobiography and Wikipedia:Conflict of interest, and Wikipedia is selective about article subjects, the general admission criterion being called WP:Notability and requiring references to show significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources, the particular standard for academics being at WP:PROF and for authors at WP:AUTHOR.

Another important difference from the other sites I mentioned is that if you write an article about yourself you will not be able to control it: no-one owns a Wikipedia article, others can and will edit it, and you may encounter Wikipedia's Law of Unintended Consequences.

Having said all that, writing about oneself is not forbidden, and if you want to go ahead, what you should do is:

Read WP:Your first article
Read WP:Best practices for editors with conflicts of interest
Make a draft article in your user space - see Help:Userspace draft for how to do that. Make sure that it is neutral in tone, explains how you meet the notability criteria, and that important claims are cited to reliable sources. Do not copy directly from other sources like websites - see Wikipedia:Copy-paste.
You can ask for comment on your draft at WP:Requests for feedback, disclosing your interest
When it is ready, propose your draft at WP:Articles for creation, again disclosing your interest, where either it will be accepted or you will be given more feedback.

John Zuhlsdorf[edit]

Several of your edits to the article John Zuhlsdorf were removed by another editor after they were challenged for citation. I'd much rather see them remain and be properly cited. Can you oblige? Zuhlsdorf is something of a shady figure and more information about his canonical status is definitely a good thing; you seem to be in the know. --Cantabwarrior 17:29, 16 February 2012 (UTC) I will try to edit again--Zuhlsdorf is a problem--does not seem to have proper canonical staus., etc.

Wikipedia and copyright[edit]

Hello Zagano, and welcome to Wikipedia. Your addition to Phyllis Zagano has had to be removed, as it appears to have added copyrighted material without permission from the copyright holder. While we appreciate your contributing to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from your sources to avoid copyright or plagiarism issues here.

You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and a cited source. If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. However, there are steps that must be taken to verify that license before you do. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
In very rare cases (that is, for sources that are public domain or compatibly licensed), it may be possible to include greater portions of a source text. However, please seek help at the help desk before adding such content to the article. 99.9% of sources may not be added in this way, so it is necessary to seek confirmation first. If you do confirm that a source is public domain or compatibly licensed, you will still need to provide full attribution; see Wikipedia:Plagiarism for the steps you need to follow.
Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you can, but please follow the steps in Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.
