Utterly![edit]

Consider two things: Wikipedia attracts a whole range of people, and Wikipedia doesn't like to 'censor' even the utterly juvenile exchanges. :-) (After all, in all that stuff is at least one definite opinion, that two instruments are actually one - a discounted opinion, but still a point to be thought about)

So... while we (including you) try hard to keep the "good stuff" on the article pages and the bad stuff off, if it isn't exactly 'poop' you'll see what people say on the talk pages. The unfortunate thing is when it is the same perennial questions/opinions/rumors. I look for the talk page archives (well, sometimes I look). Shenme (talk) 23:42, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

User Page[edit]

{{helpme}}When I use the 4-tilde signature, my name comes up in red, indicating it's not found in Wikipedia. How do I fix that? Virgil H. Soule (talk) 02:43, 5 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You want to create your userpage! NuclearWarfare contact meMy work 02:46, 5 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You need (or might want) to put something on your user page. Everybody has two pages associated with them, a user page and a talk page. The talk page (here) is where people come to ask questions, or maybe answer them! The user page is where the user can say something about themselves. A lot of people say entirely too much! :-) You could say what things you are interested in. Some people mention topics they know a lot about, in case other people might want to ask them questions.
You can get to your user page by simply clicking on the "user page" link at the top to the right of the wiki globe. Don't put anything you don't want people to know! (age, weight... I'll never tell!) Shenme (talk) 02:55, 5 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Banned from my talk page[edit]

You are banned from my talk page for making such personal, stalkerish requests as you did: here. You are free to contact me by email (see "email user" on the left hand side of my user page) but only to clarify the comments of such a decision. Further harassment will be reported to administrators. NuclearWarfare contact meMy work 20:46, 5 October 2008 (UTC) [reply]

Question and Response to your Email[edit]

Your email to me seems written using proper English grammatical sense and a fairly well-written argument. I have a question for you then. Was it you on irc with me yesterday? NuclearWarfare contact meMy work 00:24, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Also, I can you please respond here? It will be a lot easier than you emailing me and me having to respond here. NuclearWarfare contact meMy work 00:26, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No problem responding here. My only contacts with you have been the question on your Talk page and the email just sent. Don't know what irc is; I'm a newbie here. Virgil H. Soule (talk) 00:41, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That's very interesting. I got a message from someone with the username V.H.S yesterday saying demanding to know where I lived. It was kinda freaky...
So I assumed it was you. But I'm going to assume good faith and hope it wasn't you, and retract my earlier bannings. After I strike out those comments, I'll explain my philosophy on anonymous editing. NuclearWarfare contact meMy work 00:57, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My Wikipedia Philosophy on Anonymous Editing[edit]

So, I got your email, of course, and you laid out several points on why you believe anonymous editing, or even pseudonymous on Wikipedia should be forbidden. Allow me to summarize your points and my response:

  • Pseudonymous usernames allow people to attack others
    • Yes, but we can block these edits, so no harm done.
  • Pseudonymous usernames allow for, in some way, bad spelling and grammar.
    • So do identified accounts.
  • The news media does not allow anonymous sources, so why should Wikipedia.
    • Because we don't take people at their word. We follow a policy of only accepting information with reliable sources.
  • People who want to hide their real life identities do so for ulterior motives.
    • Not really. Minors, for instance, don't want to have crazy stalkers go after them for some slight they might say. Neither, do I imagine, do most adults.

Comments on my page[edit]

Hello Z. Appreciate your comments. This election will be close. I think you know there is plenty of blame to go around on the subprime, much of it Republican (deregulation). Compare the candidates on the issues and Obama wins hands-down. I hope you come to that conclusion. We must raise taxes, which McCain won't do. We must cut our military spending dramatically, which McCain won't do. Obama's health care plan will get all children covered and most adults. Obama has been a community organizer, State Senator, U.S. Senator, editor of the Harvard Law Review, etc. He's much closer to the people than McCain and realizes he must get us behind him to change Washington for real. It won't happen top-down. He would be older than 3 other Presidents when they took office at 47, while McCain is a 72 year old with a cancer history and would be the oldest ever elected. Do you really want a guy that age, with that background, with an zealot like Palin behind him? This is an easy choice if you compare them on issues.Farcaster (talk) 19:05, 11 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Math formatter is insane[edit]

I've been struggling with the math formatter. Things that work fine on one preview pass suddenly fail to parse or fail when I go to save the page. What do I do? Virgil H. Soule (talk) 00:56, 25 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
