Henri Maspero

Hello Zeus. What sort of footnote do you suggest? G.H.Langdell

The following quotation is from the Taoist Culture and Information Center web site [1] based in Hong Kong (my italics) : " Henri Maspero was the first who tried to have the academic discussion on the history and documents of Daoism in this era [early 20th century] and he was nearly the only master of it until the present. In 1971 the second volume was republished with another title 'Taoism and Chinese Religion'. The British Encyclopedia views it as the best and most authoritative work on Daoism in the west." This article by Chen Yaoting is contemporary. The main reason I put that interpolation in the wikipedia article is because it is something of a disgrace (as well as a tragedy) that this great work of scholarship is no longer available in the English language. Though you may disagree with me you are wrong to say Taoist studies are not suffering because of its absence. If you don't believe me you might want to send an email to Eva Wong, Mantak Chia or any serious Taoist scholar and ask them what they think. That having been said, if you ever stumble across a copy of Frank Kierman's translation drop me a line and i'll wire you the money to send it to me. The best thing would be if someone put Professor Kierman's translation online. That would be the most sensible thing wouldn't it? Best wishes with you studies. User:Langdell. 26th December 2006.

Moving pages

Hi! It looks like you're trying to move one or more pages. However, please stop doing that this way - the new name of the page might be good, but Wikipedia has another procedure for moving pages. Look at Help:Renaming (moving) a page: you need to use the move tab, and not cut and paste. Cut and paste moves don't take the edit history with them and thus violate the GDFL copyright terms. Also, in some cases, when the move might be controversial, you might first want to discuss the move on the article's talk page. Yes, you should wait for an admin. Don't be a judge in your own case; and it shouldn't take long for one to turn up. Frankly, how Hong moved it is less important than the fact of deep disagreement; the only reason to prefer established locations is that they are usually the agreement of multiple editors. I added a stub section for Neo-Confucianism at Taoic religion, per your suggestion. I switched the order of "Taoism and Confucianism" and "Interaction with Dharmic faiths" to better fit the flow with that new section. Take a look and let me know what you think. I completely understand. You should take a look at some of the silly things I've reverted. I agree it can be frustrating when you work hard on an article and someone comes in trying to take it in a completely differant direction or pushing a POV. Regardless, I appreciate the feedback you and others have given me. Anything that helps me catch thngs I may not have thought of, or helps improve the article, is quite welcome. Edit war/2RR at Chinaman (racial term)

Hi; saw your attempt to maintain POV at this page; I reverted to your text after the IP address user currently attacking the page made several; then he reverted again this morning, and I've used up two my my reversions of his changes. His Wikipedia account shows only edits on this page and no other; not Hong, but surely an enlistee. I'll be out for the rest of the day and would appreciate it if you kept an eye on the page, and maybe use up a couple of reverts; if he does one more I think that's 3RR on him, which will allow for a block request, even though he's just an IP address SPA. BTW although I don't know if you care, but I found another example of casual/official use (item No. 40, with caption "Houses built for Chinamen in Winter. 1200 such houses in all", which puts the lie to the notion that this word is/was always "offensive". The caption on this picture is in the BC Archives, it's part of a photographic display from the Kamloops Museum, and it would seem to be the caption the corporate photographer who took the picture used, which is why the text is what it is and hasn't been pc-ized; the same image is elsewhere no the Onderdonk's Way site on the Contract 61 page as "Chinese Community at Keefers", indicating the archivist adjusted the language to "modern sensibilities". The same image I've seen as "Chinatown, Keefer's" and so have accordingly added it to the BC section at List of Chinatowns. Other such examples of captioning, official use and so on which were not overtly derogatory are abundant and I'll be compiling more and trying to find a way to integrate them into the content of the main page, even though HGQ maintains what I've provided already means nothing; sure, if someone wants to find something offensive, they will; that doesn't mean it was used offensively, which is the cant that's been presented as though it were NPOV, when it's utterly POV in the extreme. Compare the rationalizations as to why the explicit derisive Gweilo is seen as now "OK" (courtesy of the Canadian Broadcast Standards Branch) and consider how much there's a double standard at play. Again, I doubt you share the same position as me on all this but I do note your efforts to maintain NPOV and hope you'll consider my request to keep monitoring this page; if HQG can enlist people, I guess so can I.....Skookum1 19:02, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

History of Chinese immigration to Canada

Just a follow-up to your latest post on Talk:Chinaman please see History of Chinese immigration to Canada and note my recent introduction of fact/cite templates and comments/deletions about POV material. This stuff is rife (HQG patrols this page, too....) and IMO should be merged with Chinese Canadian or something; all the Chinese-Canadian articles, even the Canadian Chinatown ones, mirror the content in other articles, and all are full of unsubstantiated POV myths, or in some cases POV myths that are repeatecd by newspaper reporters and so seem citable (like the nonsensical claim that "a Chinese died for every foot of the Fraser Canyon", which would mean over 100,000 dead....). Anyway, thought I'd give you a heads-up on that article, too. I see your interest in Chinese culture and, although you wouldn't think it from my attitude towards "adult children" like Hong and Uncle G, I'm one of those Westerners who spent a lot of his youth learning/exposing myself to other cultures. I daresay I've read more Lao Tzu and Chinese Buddhist writings than Hong has read Plato or Nietzsche, let's put it that way; multiculturalism is spposed to be a two-way street; all too often it's not, and the host culture finds itself buried beneath a multiple-lane one-way expressway to having its own history and culture swept aside by people who neither know nor care anything about it, or who in fact have cultivated negative/judgemental attitudes towards it as part of their own self-assertion (as with the nonsense about Chinaman being "always offensive"). Such is the way of colonialism/imperialism throughout history, of course....Skookum1 19:18, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

POV war

I wouldn't bet on it not being deleted; Falsedef and David Levy are highly regarded, and you can see the quality of Falsedef's thinking vs. you-know-who's. It's all going to boil down to who the arbitrating admin is; if the article survives then the fight over the merges is on; and I'll be fielding name-change/move proposals no Gweilo as alluded to; that he's not willing to allow other POVs on the page is proof of the "ownership" thing, and so this whole thing will wind up on WP/ANI because THAT is also against Wiki guidelines. I dread to look at those edits, because I'll be tempted to "fix" them - but the more the rest of us work on that page, the more it legitimizes it, and when the AFD comes to its term (Monday?) I'll have one more comment about how clearly the page is being sliced and diced to keep it at its preferred POV, and that it conflicts directly with NPOV and much more detailed content at chinaman and chink, so it's clear evidence it's NOT a consensually-driven article but one born in an edit war. What Wiki guidelines are going to land this on WP/ANI I don't know, but I know I'm not the only one who's not going to take this lying down. That said, where's my coffee? Article on Shen Kuo

Ok, I have indicated the names of the Needham volumes, added two more images, fixed many of the parentheses, and along with getting rid of some of the block quotes, provided more extensive prose to explain the ones I decided to keep. I also got rid of any random Wade-giles spelling, although the ones I have decided to keep are from direct quotations of Needham's books, and should not be reworded for sake of faithfulness to the actual quotations. I have begun editing Su Song and Zhang Heng to your specifications as well, and they will soon be improved greatly.--PericlesofAthens 03:33, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

Song Dynasty article

Edits to the Song Dynasty are not done, but I have just made a huge revision by rewriting the entire history section, and moving all the former contents into a new article as you requested: History of the Song Dynasty. I fixed the Needham references, and I'm sure I did something else you asked, I just can't remember it now. Lol. Thanks Zeus, I have changed the leads in both Song Dynasty and History of the Song Dynasty. Also, you got that backwards about the references for these two articles, as none of the references for the History article needed to be taken out, but the reference 'Tillman' needed to be taken out of the Song Dynasty article since there was no longer any citation from his work. "You should probably subdivide the history section in the Song Dynasty article to seperate in into Northern and Southern Song sections. Do this, and the article will pass". It looks like someone already beat me to the punch on that one, Zeus, as I went to the article just now and found that it was already divided this way. I think the main problem with the images was with the Guanyin statue (which has been fixed thanks to user:Iamunknown) and the Jun Ware stoneware planter going against the wiki standards of being decorative while not supporting what is evident in the text next to it. Therefore, with the latter, I will simply keep it in the Culture of Song Dynasty article, where it won't matter, since that article is all about art in the beginning anyway.--PericlesofAthens 03:01, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

Thanks Zeus! Wow, where did you find all of these? I haven't seen any of these on Google Images. The first few images looked very cool indeed, althoug the last one, I assure you, is not Shen Kuo, it is the 3rd century Prime Minister and warlord Cao Cao. Shen's Garden Estate Picture

Hey Zeus, I was wondering, since you know a bit of Chinese, if you could discern the copyright status of the thumbnail picture on this site here: [4] It is an awesome picture, one that is sorely needed for the new "Legacy" section of Shen Kuo's article. It is a picture of the inside of the exhibition hall at the Mengxi Gardens of Zhenjiang (Shen's former estate). The picture shows the statue of Shen Kuo, an armillary sphere, and the glass cabinets on all sides of the walls displaying different versions and copies of Shen's Dream Pool Essays throughout the centuries.
